Chapter 1

Nov 22, 2024 5:28 pm
Last night was a wild night, but that's pretty much all you can remember.

Your head is aching. Your vision is blurry, at first, but things slowly come into focus. You realize that you must have fallen asleep outside, and not very far from one of the roads that run through town.

As you look around, you see a few others starting to wake up nearby. Any faces you recognize look different somehow. There are strange new tattoos, inexplicable articles of clothing, and a donkey on a leash that no one remembers buying.

What happened last night? Surely you're not the only person asking yourself that question.
Nov 22, 2024 6:25 pm
I wake up with my head shaking and feeling like I’m going to throw up. While I’m slowly regaining consciousness, I try to remember what happened. As far as I know, I was walking, looking for a place to eat after a difficult day searching for a job that suits a warlock. The last thing I remember is entering a place to get something to eat.

As I try to stand up to look around, I’m surprised to see a donkey trying to eat my clothes. HEY, I’M NOT FOOD!! I shout. After that, I try speaking to the people around me, Does anyone know what happened? I can’t remember clearly.
Nov 22, 2024 11:54 pm
When asking I also try to remember what happened.

Delvane, your memory of last night is hazy, but a few details are coming back to you.

You made your way to an inn last night. You think it was called The Stumbling Boar. A satyr was buying everyone drinks of their choice. Other patrons of the inn seemed to be getting very, very, very drunk. You can't recall how much you drank, though.

The other revelers start to slowly disperse.

The donkey's rope is tied to a goblin's wrist. The goblin takes a look at the donkey's saddle, and suddenly looks rather startled. The goblin quickly removes the rope from his wrist and says, "I'm gettin' outta here!" He takes off running.

The donkey doesn't seem to mind. It stays by Delvane's side. In fact, it seems to like you, Delvane.
Nov 23, 2024 1:38 pm
After a flash of memories comes to my mind, I put my hand on my face in a disappointed way. "Gods, I'll never drink again." Looking at the scene of the goblin running away and the donkey staying by my side, I say, "So, what do we do now, little donkey?" Thinking that the goblin might have some information, I try to run in his direction to catch him. "I have some questions for you! Stop running!" I try to cast Unseen Servant near him to make him stop or fall, giving me time to reach him and ask questions.
[ +- ] Unseen Servant (Cha)
Nov 23, 2024 2:36 pm
The goblin runs into the Unseen Servant at full speed. He topples over and falls to the ground. You easily catch up to him as he writhes on the ground in pain.

"Oh...agh....what was that?"

The donkey follows you over. The Unseen Servant's presence remains. You can sense its magic nearby.

The goblin looks up at you, holding a hand out as if to stop you from coming any closer. "Listen! Whatever it is, I swear I didn't do it! I was not involved!"
Nov 23, 2024 3:30 pm
"Hey I just want to know what happened" I walk slowly trying to not scare him, I stop in a good distance and start petting the donkey's mane and say to the goblin "Tell me what happened and everything you know, If you weren't involved, you have nothing to fear right? I just want to know what this mess is"

The goblin looks you over with a wary eye. He slowly gets up and rubs his wrists.

"You...you don't own that donkey, do you? Did you read the saddle? It says PROPERTY OF CLEREBOLD THE WIZARD. If you're smart, you'll steer clear of that guy. He's not known for kindness.

"By the way, was that magic you used a moment ago? You gotta be careful with that. Most of us can't use magic. People might get upset with you. Or they might try to hire you, which could be just as bad, if you ask me."
Nov 23, 2024 4:22 pm
"See? doesn't hurt to talk a little." I look at the donkey still petting him and say "Then we steal you or something like that little donkey?" Then I turn back to the goblin "So, if you are tied with the donkey you are also involved with this right? If not, why are you here then? But anyway, why don't you come with me? Maybe we can return the donkey to his owner and he give us some reward? I don't even know If I stole him. As far as I know I'm innocent and you are the one tied with him." After this I stretch out my hand to greet him and says "And thanks for the tips about using magic, I'm new in these lands."

The goblin frowns and crosses his arms.

"Lady, magic or not, I don't help people who I just met. This town is dangerous enough for goblins as it is. Now, unless you can give me some very monetary reasons to help you, I'm leaving. And don't try to stop me with your magic this time!"

The goblin starts walking away. The donkey and Delvane's Unseen Servant stay put.
Nov 24, 2024 4:54 pm
"Then what about this? If we find out what happened with this donkey, we can try to return him to his owner, this Clerebold man. Surely, he’ll give us a good amount of coins as a reward." While I'm speaking, I try to command the unseen servant to make him stumble and slow him down without him noticing. "What do you think?"

"Lady, I'm warning you! Leave me be, or else!"
Nov 24, 2024 5:11 pm
"Okay, okay, you win. If you had wanted to come with me, maybe I could have given you some cool magical things as thanks for your help. Well then, more gold for me." I say this slowly, turning back with the donkey, trying one last time to convince the goblin.

The goblin looks at you for a moment. He sheathes his blade.

"I'll stick around out of curiosity. The idea of a reward seems unlikely, but I suppose there is a chance. If we have any trouble, though, don't be surprised if I run away! No one in this kingdom offers health insurance for goblins.

Lead the way, whatever-your-name-is."
Nov 24, 2024 6:48 pm
"Haha, I knew you would come, we are together in this. My name is Delvane, my pleasure, and what's yours? I hope we can get along well" I say this trying to shake his hand, and during this I look at the donkey and ask, "what do you think we should do now? maybe we can get some clues around here."

The goblin doesn't shake hands with you, but he does tell you that his name is Wormwick.

He suggests making inquiries at The Stumbling Boar. Being there and having a drink are the last things he can remember doing.
Nov 24, 2024 7:10 pm
I keep my hand in position for a few seconds until I notice that he will not shake my hand and say "Maybe you don't like physical contact", then I take the donkey leash and speak to him "Nice to meet you Wormwick, and the last thing I remember was to go to that Inn too, and a suspicious Satyr buying drinks for everyone, lets go back to this place, maybe we can get some useful information."
Nov 25, 2024 12:32 am
Wormwick reluctantly follows Delvane. The donkey and Delvane's Unseen Servant follow, too.

Your party makes its way back to The Stumbling Boar. As you walk, a few people stop when they see you to call out things such as:

"Hey! It's the priest-punchers!"

"Oi! Bishop-beater! Hahaha!"

This is puzzling to you, as you're not sure what you did to earn such nicknames.

You enter The Stumbling Boar. You see the telltale signs of what must have been a riotous party. The barkeeper, a burly female dwarf, is tidying things up. She turns a bit pale when you come in, and looks as if she might start wielding the broom in her hands as a weapon.

"Hold it right there! I'm not sure I want your business, after last night's shenanigans!"
Nov 25, 2024 1:02 pm
"Hey, I don't know what you're talking about. I don't want to cause any trouble, this is a misunderstanding. I just want to know what happened here last night."

I say this in a calm voice, trying to tranquilize her a bit, though I am really confused with this situation.

"Can you tell us what happened?"
Nov 25, 2024 3:10 pm
The barkeeper's expression turns from cranky to amused. She gives a hearty laugh.

"Hoho! You don't even remember what happened last night, do ye? By the gods, you were sloshed.

"Tell you one thing, though. There was a group of folks who decided to get new tattoos, after an uncouth number of drinks. I can't remember perfectly, but methinks you were part of the group that went along with them.

"You lot went to the tattoo shop on the north side of town, if I'm not mistaken."
Nov 25, 2024 7:27 pm
"Oh my gods what did we do??" I put my hand on my face, trying to remember something. After that I start to search in my body to see If I have any strange tattos and ask Wormwick "Do you remember something about this? Or have any new tatto? haha"
Nov 25, 2024 10:02 pm
Delvane's search reveals no new tattoos on her person.

Wormwick's eyes widen. He wears hand wraps on each hand; he starts to remove the wrap from his right hand. Once it's off, he rolls up his right sleeve.

He sees a new tattoo on his forearm, depicting a naked angel. Startled, he blurts out, "blah!" He points at it, then looks at you, then looks at the barkeeper, who laughs even more.
Nov 25, 2024 10:24 pm
After seeing this scene, I try hard to stifle my laughter, pressing both hands against my mouth. "Oh my, I hope this wasn’t expensive." Then, I glance at the barkeep and say, "Thank you for your help, and sorry for whatever we did here last night."
"And do you have some food for travel that we can buy?" I say after noticing I'm very hungry, maybe it's because of last night.

I turn to Wormwick, still trying not to laugh. "I... I... think it’s a good idea to visit that tattoo shop."

The barkeeper finishes tidying up, and then lays out a fine lunch for you and for Wormwick. You get a biscuit, a bowl of soup, a turkey leg, a nob of cheese flecked with almonds, a crisp apple, and a flagon of something that the barkeeper calls "owl-beer," as well as a sweetroll. It costs you a gold piece, but Wormwick agrees to pay his half, which amounts to five pieces of silver.

Having eaten well, you make your way to the tattoo shop. Again, certain passersby take time to holler strange things at you.

When you arrive at the tattoo shop, you see once again that the events of last night have left the place in shambles. There are broken chairs, busted windows, and a few tattoo needles sticking out of the walls.

The shop owner is a half-elf covered from head to toe in colorful tattoos, his ears adorned with several earrings each. He greets you both with a warm hug, despite Wormwick's nonverbal protests.

"Friends, you saved me a lot of trouble last night. Those creeps from The Order of Light are always preaching virtue and acceptance, but they became hostile once they found out I was a member of Grogglekin. But you! You guys gave them a sound thrashing!"

You have heard of both of these factions, The Order of Light and Grogglekin.

The Order of Light is a large church with a powerful clergy; some of them call upon benevolent gods to cast powerful, righteous spells.

The Grogglekin, on the other hand, are part of a cult which seeks to undermine civilization and bring back the old times, when giants ruled over all sentient beings (or at least, all the sentient beings who weren't allied with the dragons).
Nov 26, 2024 12:57 am
"Helloo" I talk in a awkward voice trying to remember if I know this person "I'm glad we aren't the one's who did this mess"
"Actually we got some problems remembering what happened last night, do you know something about it? Everything I remember was that we come here with some folks to make tattos"

The half-elf explains, "some people from The Order of Light tried to convince me I'm doing something wrong. I told them they're crazy, and that one day all people will serve the giants. They were upset by that. They started casting spells at me and trying to break every tattoo needle I have.

"That's when you guys decided to intervene. You were great!" The half-elf gestures toward Delvane. "You punched one of the bishops square in the face! He lost a tooth! It was awesome. Then they started blasting at you with magic, and you went on shooting spells right back at 'em!

"You know, if you guys wanted to join Grogglekin, I could definitely put in a good word for you."
Nov 26, 2024 9:16 am
"That... That’s true? I did that? I must have drunk a lot to be able to do that. I’m not usually so violent," I say, shocked, knowing I’d normally think three times before trying to punch someone, especially a bishop. "But I’m glad everything went well, and thank you for the offer, haha," I add, trying to be polite while wondering what my patron would say about me joining a cult.

"I have more questions for you, but before that, do you have any stories about the tattoo on my friend’s arm?" I ask, pointing to the tattoo on Wormwick’s arm.
Nov 26, 2024 1:31 pm
The half-elf opens his mouth to explain, but as he does, a ridiculously muscular humanoid barges into the tattoo shop. He appears to be half man, half chameleon. He is about a foot taller than the half-elf.

Here's an image for reference. I can't figure out how to make this visible in the post...

He lunges toward Wormwick, grabs the goblin by the collar, and with one hand, hurls him through a window. The window shatters, sending Wormwick and many shards of glass into the street.

The chameleon-man steps out into the street and says in a Cockney accent, "you's da one what stole my carriage last night! I'm gonna grind you into goblin paste!"

Delvane, it looks like Wormwick is in trouble. The donkey and your Unseen Servant are standing by, watching this scene unfold, without any sort of strong reaction.

Meanwhile, down the street, an onlooker notices Wormwick's plight. A man wearing clothes that seem better suited to the desert than the streets of this town. A man who is heavily armed and who knows how to handle himself in a scrap.

Delvane and Dezd, roll for initiative!

Dezd has come to this rich kingdom looking for more than the scraps that are all that's left of the once great empire of what is now the wastelands. He has his weapons, his book of poetry, and a willingness to do whatever is necessary to earn his way.

In the streets of this incredibly rich, incredibly filthy city, he sees a man attack a goblin. Fair enough, that's what you should do to the little sneaking menaces. The goblin's owner, a robed woman, seems upset by this attack. Dezd didn't know what price goblins fetched in this part of the world but a slave owning woman must have money.

Striding up to the fight, Dezd commanded the man:

"Stop! Do not hurt this woman's servant. I'm sure this issue can be settled without harming the vexing beast. Now tell me what happened, then we will let this lady tell her side, and I'm sure we can come to an equitable agreement."

He does not want to be jailed again for what, a goblin and a petty dispute that he already regrets getting involved in.

Nonetheless, the code of survival demands much. He draws his shamsir and his talwar, flips them once to settle them in his grip, and awaits the rush of the ring fighter. He will not start this fight.

As-salamu alaykum, peace be with you, Dezd makes a short bow to the rising woman.

I saw this man attack your servant, Dezd glances at the goblin, and was able to come to your assistance. My name is Dezd, a wanderer from the Great Wastes newly come to these lands. I am a stranger to all here, hopefully I might be of further assistance to you and your household.

This creature,
indicating the fallen brute, is not dead, only fallen. What do you wish me to do with him?
Nov 29, 2024 2:31 pm
After listening Dezd I get a little confused about what he is saying, I try to clean the dust from my clothes and take a bow with my hat as respect to him. "Nice to meet you, my name is Delvane and thank for your help." I point to Wormwick "And this is Wormwick, he is not a servant, we're more like friends."

Then I look at the creature on the floor and say to Dedz "I don't know this guy, we're talking with the owner of this tatto shop and he showed up attacking Wormwick saying that we stole his carriage".

"Actually were in a mission to know what to do with this donkey," I say patting the donkey "we wake up this morning with him tied to us, and apparently he is from a rich place, then if we can return him to his owner maybe we will get rewarded with a good amount, you can come with us if you want."
Nov 29, 2024 4:02 pm
Further penniless people, not a rich woman. Ah well.

As you desire, lady. As for you, Wormwick, consider it probation. Your people have a long and ugly history but I will give you a clean slate with me starting now.

Wormwick scowls at Dezd, but he does help move Brutus out of the street.

The collective efforts of Dezd, Delvane, Wormwick, and the Unseen Servant are enough to move Brutus into an alleyway. He's a heavy fellow, though. It feels as though he weighs almost 300 pounds, and there's not an ounce of fat on him.

Sneepy sent a note to badbaron
Meanwhile, on a nearby street, Mariel is with her old friend, Dedge the Exile. The two of them are gazing at a horse-drawn carriage that they sold to someone last night. It's now completely destroyed. Apparently, last night someone stole the carriage from the buyer, and took the carriage out for a drunken joyride. It was then crashed into a melon stand near the market square.

Dedge and Mariel watch as some unlucky guardsmen collect what's left of the wagon, removing bits of melon from the wreckage.

"Unbelievable," says Dedge to Mariel, his arms crossed in front of him. "We sell that guy a wagon, and it's wrecked in the street, not even a day later."
Nov 30, 2024 3:00 pm
"Now I would suggest making ourselves scarce before he wakes up. It seems this carriage he thinks you stole was bought from Dedge the Exile. If we want to clear your little friend's name and avoid further unpleasantness, it would seem that is the next person to speak to. Maybe your wine shop knows where we could find this person."

After his comment to the goblin, Dezd speaks only to Delvane and addresses no further words to Wormwick for weal or woe. He replaces the tooth and the bill of sale where he found them and rises from the body which he lays in the sedge next to the wine shop. Dezd assumes the wine shop owner watched the altercation, after all, the goblin had been thrown through his window. But after the big brawler's disorderly behavior, he wouldn't bring him back inside unless asked by the shop keeper.

OOC:
Just for clarification, it's a tattoo shop. Alternatively called a tattoo parlor. People go there to get tattooed.

"It was a good wagon." Mariel says pulling her hood back and allowing a cascade of crimson curls to escape. She looks at Dedge and shrugs the bells woven into her hair jingling somewhat, "To be fair I don't think a mend spell is going to fix that and we already sold it so I'm not sure how it's our problem."

Her head twists a bit to the side looking embarrassed, "Besides, I don't actually have a mend spell."

"I suppose you're right," says Dedge. "Brutus' gold was as good as anybody's. I just hate to see something useful go to waste.

"I understand that the people who stole the wagon had a pretty wild night. They got drunk, punched some priests from the Order of Light, wrecked Brutus' wagon, and wound up with one of Clerebold's donkeys.

Actually, I bet the inept city guard would probably love to get their hands on the miscreants. I haven't seen a reward posted for their arrest, but it could be worth looking into."

"Yeah, maybe it would be better to find out about this Dedge. The owner of the tattoo shop was friendly with us before everything happened, I hope he still is. Let's leave this big guy here and head into the shop. I don't think he'll cause any more trouble in the condition he's in after his injuries."

After that I turn to both Wormwick and Dedz and say
"Gods, I'm ashamed of being knocked out so early in the fight, sorry for the trouble guys. Let's go to the shop"

Dezd follows the witch into the tattoo shop.

"We could talk to the guard." Mariel says nodding in the general direction of their headquarters, "Perhaps Brutus would be interested in a little civic justice."

Dezd, Delvane, and Wormwick turn to enter the tattoo shop and notice that the donkey has gone missing. The shop owner is standing in front of the shop now, and is talking to a few guardsmen. There is also a tall figure wearing a red cloak, who looks to be half human, half wolf.

As the guards question the shop owner, the wolf-man approaches Dezd, Delvane, and Wormwick.

"I am Clerebold," he says. "I seek a donkey. And not just any donkey--I donkey that I lost, and that is capable of casting magic spells.

Have you seen it?"

Meanwhile, Dedge and Mariel speak to the guards in the market square, near the wagon crash. Apparently, Brutus never spoke to the authorities regarding the wagon's theft. However, Dedge and Mariel find out that there's a reward of 400 GP offered for finding Clerebold's donkey.

"Really, magic spells? That's truly amazing Master Clerebold. There was a donkey here in the street just a short time ago, that might have been yours.

Might I ask, if we happen to stumble across said beast and attempt to retrieve it for you, however did you teach the donkey to cast and what spells does it know?"

"The creature's magic abilities came about after I ran some experiments upon it," explains Clerebold. "I have yet to discover the full extent of its powers.

"It is docile, unless it begins to feel threatened. When it senses danger, it can cast offensive conjuration spells--things like fire bolt and magic missile. Additionally, I think I managed to get it to teleport at least once.

"As I say, these powers, and it's potential to become more powerful, make it extremely valuable to me. It must be recovered."

"So not invisibility, which is encouraging, I had the strange idea that it might be listening to us right now. How intelligent is it?"

Dezd inhales. Even if it were unseen, it would still smell like a donkey which is an odd smell inside a shop.

If it were indeed gone, it would be a difficult job to track unless it revealed itself. If it really just wanted to be a donkey, then it might have wandered to a livery stable or the like. If, however, its intelligence had increased with its magical ability, it might want more of a partnership, rather than to be treated like an experimental subject in which case it might want an . . . agent.

Once the conversation is over, Dezd checks outside the shop for tracks which might explain where the donkey, which had been right there when they moved the unconscious man, might have headed.

It helps to have more arrows than one in your quiver.

Dezd easily locates the hoofprints of the donkey. They don't lead anywhere; they stop at the post where the donkey was hitched outside the tattoo shop, and then they end. This leads you to believe that the donkey must have teleported away from this place.

Also, the rope used to tie the donkey is gone. Very curious...

"We should probably look for that donkey." Mariel says to Dedge, "I mean I don't know about you but four-thousand gold sounds rather nice to me right about now."

Dedge agrees, but reminds you that the reward was for 400 GP. Not 4,000.

"A girl can dream Dedge," Mariel sighs, "a girl can dream."
