"It was a good wagon." Mariel says pulling her hood back and allowing a cascade of crimson curls to escape. She looks at Dedge and shrugs the bells woven into her hair jingling somewhat, "To be fair I don't think a mend spell is going to fix that and we already sold it so I'm not sure how it's our problem."

Her head twists a bit to the side looking embarrassed, "Besides, I don't actually have a mend spell."

"I suppose you're right," says Dedge. "Brutus' gold was as good as anybody's. I just hate to see something useful go to waste.

"I understand that the people who stole the wagon had a pretty wild night. They got drunk, punched some priests from the Order of Light, wrecked Brutus' wagon, and wound up with one of Clerebold's donkeys.

Actually, I bet the inept city guard would probably love to get their hands on the miscreants. I haven't seen a reward posted for their arrest, but it could be worth looking into."

"Yeah, maybe it would be better to find out about this Dedge. The owner of the tattoo shop was friendly with us before everything happened, I hope he still is. Let's leave this big guy here and head into the shop. I don't think he'll cause any more trouble in the condition he's in after his injuries."

After that I turn to both Wormwick and Dedz and say
"Gods, I'm ashamed of being knocked out so early in the fight, sorry for the trouble guys. Let's go to the shop"

Dezd follows the witch into the tattoo shop.

"We could talk to the guard." Mariel says nodding in the general direction of their headquarters, "Perhaps Brutus would be interested in a little civic justice."

Dezd, Delvane, and Wormwick turn to enter the tattoo shop and notice that the donkey has gone missing. The shop owner is standing in front of the shop now, and is talking to a few guardsmen. There is also a tall figure wearing a red cloak, who looks to be half human, half wolf.

As the guards question the shop owner, the wolf-man approaches Dezd, Delvane, and Wormwick.

"I am Clerebold," he says. "I seek a donkey. And not just any donkey--I donkey that I lost, and that is capable of casting magic spells.

Have you seen it?"

Meanwhile, Dedge and Mariel speak to the guards in the market square, near the wagon crash. Apparently, Brutus never spoke to the authorities regarding the wagon's theft. However, Dedge and Mariel find out that there's a reward of 400 GP offered for finding Clerebold's donkey.

"Really, magic spells? That's truly amazing Master Clerebold. There was a donkey here in the street just a short time ago, that might have been yours.

Might I ask, if we happen to stumble across said beast and attempt to retrieve it for you, however did you teach the donkey to cast and what spells does it know?"

"The creature's magic abilities came about after I ran some experiments upon it," explains Clerebold. "I have yet to discover the full extent of its powers.

"It is docile, unless it begins to feel threatened. When it senses danger, it can cast offensive conjuration spells--things like fire bolt and magic missile. Additionally, I think I managed to get it to teleport at least once.

"As I say, these powers, and it's potential to become more powerful, make it extremely valuable to me. It must be recovered."

"So not invisibility, which is encouraging, I had the strange idea that it might be listening to us right now. How intelligent is it?"

Dezd inhales. Even if it were unseen, it would still smell like a donkey which is an odd smell inside a shop.

If it were indeed gone, it would be a difficult job to track unless it revealed itself. If it really just wanted to be a donkey, then it might have wandered to a livery stable or the like. If, however, its intelligence had increased with its magical ability, it might want more of a partnership, rather than to be treated like an experimental subject in which case it might want an . . . agent.

Once the conversation is over, Dezd checks outside the shop for tracks which might explain where the donkey, which had been right there when they moved the unconscious man, might have headed.

It helps to have more arrows than one in your quiver.

Dezd easily locates the hoofprints of the donkey. They don't lead anywhere; they stop at the post where the donkey was hitched outside the tattoo shop, and then they end. This leads you to believe that the donkey must have teleported away from this place.

Also, the rope used to tie the donkey is gone. Very curious...

"We should probably look for that donkey." Mariel says to Dedge, "I mean I don't know about you but four-thousand gold sounds rather nice to me right about now."

Dedge agrees, but reminds you that the reward was for 400 GP. Not 4,000.

"A girl can dream Dedge," Mariel sighs, "a girl can dream."
