OOC

Nov 22, 2024 5:32 pm
Here is a place for people to talk out of character (OOC).

Our adventure starts in a way similar to the movie, The Hangover. Player characters wake up outside near a street in the town. No one can remember last night's antics very well, and there may be some rather mysterious problems that need to be resolved.

At the beginning of Chapter 1, describe what unusual things have happened to your character. We'll work together to decide on some suitable plot hooks and minor quests.
Nov 22, 2024 7:47 pm
Hello, When I'm trying to get information for someone I need to make a roll?
Nov 22, 2024 11:11 pm
That depends. If it's information pertaining to your backstory, you might not need to make a roll. Otherwise, I might call for a ln Intelligence check of some kind. What kind of information do you seek?
Nov 22, 2024 11:16 pm
It's in a situation like in the chapter 1, where my character is asking if someone know what happened
Nov 22, 2024 11:40 pm
If you want to roll to see what you remember, roll a History check with disadvantage. You can also roll an Investigation check to gather clues based on your surroundings. I'll get started on a response post soon.
Nov 22, 2024 11:51 pm
Okaay, thanks
Nov 23, 2024 12:07 pm
By the way, are you drawing your character? It looks good!
Nov 23, 2024 1:40 pm
Thank you!! I'm practicing some simple drawings, and I thought it would be cool to try drawing this character haha!
Nov 23, 2024 3:56 pm
Welcome, Corvuska. Once you get your character set up, let's discuss how we're going to introduce your character into the story.
Nov 23, 2024 4:23 pm
Hello, welcome Corvuska!!!
Nov 24, 2024 4:55 pm
Gods, Delvane is not good at persuading people haha
Nov 24, 2024 4:56 pm
2 rolls with a 4
Nov 24, 2024 6:57 pm
Hah! Yeah, those first two rolls were tragic.

In the future, let's not bother with dice rolls during RP, unless the circumstances are exceptional. Sometimes it's best to reserve dice for combat, thievery, etc.
Nov 24, 2024 7:03 pm
Ohh okay I'll keep that in mind, the last time I played the GM asked for rolls in every action, then I kept this in my head haha
Nov 25, 2024 8:35 pm
Do you have a preference as to which form for character sheet we use? I didn't notice a preference as to our point distribution but I'm driving and at work. I assume the standard 16, 14, 13, 12, or what ever it is because that seems to be the one most people use.
Nov 25, 2024 9:15 pm
When creating mine I used the distribuition from the free rules on the DnD beyond 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
Nov 25, 2024 10:05 pm
Use whichever character sheet you prefer. The standard 5E character sheet is fine, for our purposes. For stats, you can take the standard array, or do point buy. Either one works.
Nov 25, 2024 11:36 pm
Level 1 yes?

Indeed!

I love this Dezd character that Badbaron has put together. You have clearly done your homework, my friend.

I will have Dezd enter the fray during our first combat encounter (I think it's coming soon 😁).
Nov 26, 2024 5:09 am
Thanks for posting that, I was about to post but it's less awkward if I wasn't drinking with them the night before. ;-)
Nov 26, 2024 9:19 am
Hello!! So many new people here now, haha!
Do we have any rules about posting? Like an order for players to post or something?
This is my first time doing this, so I don’t know much about how to play.

Ohh gods, worried about my donkey and the goblin friend that don't like me XD

So, unless we're in the middle of combat, there is no turn order. You can post as much as you like, and in any order.

Once we get into a combat encounter, we will roll for initiative, and at that point we will start taking turns.

I can't guarantee the safety of Wormwick or the donkey, but I have a tradition of not killing off player characters unless it's time for them to go out in a blaze of glory!

Each individual turn or you roll once for the opposition and everyone who beats it posts, then the opps, then all the party, then all the opps again?

And I loved the chameleon reference haha
Nov 26, 2024 3:26 pm
Now on round 2, I need to roll initiative again? or we will remain the initial roll?

I rolled a nat 1 on the first turn, I'll go last right?
Nov 26, 2024 3:35 pm
We'll keep the initial roll and just keep taking turns in that order. Unless Dezd can beat an 11, Wormwick will be going first.

How about them low rolls? 😄
Nov 26, 2024 3:37 pm
Ohh Okay, thanks. Still learning, sorry for those questions haha
Nov 26, 2024 3:38 pm
And gods, Delvane is a unlucky one, only rollyng 4, 5 and now 1 haha
Nov 26, 2024 4:00 pm
I like that Dezd is determined not to start this fight. I would grant him Heroic Inspiration, but since he's a human, I think he already has it, according to the new rules. Let me know if I'm wrong.
Nov 26, 2024 4:09 pm
He does have one, yes.

So our initiative order is:

Dezd
Wormwick
Delvane
Brutus

Delvane is up next.
Nov 26, 2024 4:17 pm
Something that could be important in the future. As I read the rules (and one reason I didn't attack first), you can only draw or stow a single weapon in an action; drawing two takes the entire action. I could have drawn one and attacked but that wouldn't be as cool looking and I'm looking to make an impression.

However, the goblin also sheathed a weapon then drew another. That should be a full action; his firing a stone from his sling should be a second action. Obviously as an archer, I would love this to be the case but as I read the rules, I don't think it is. Can you clarify the draw/sheath rules as you want to use them?
Nov 26, 2024 5:29 pm
Good god ya'll are chatty. Lol.

I need to pick spells still. I ran out of steam last night.
Nov 26, 2024 5:30 pm
Badbaron, that's a fair point. I have been studying the new rules a bit. Honestly, I'm not sure I care what gets stowed/drawn in a turn. We'll have to experiment; I don't think we're at a point where letting people stow/draw at will is going to break the game.

So for now, don't worry about the stow/draw rules, unless we find something that is truly game-breaking.

No worries! We'll make sure you get a chance to hop in and do cool stuff, too.
Nov 26, 2024 7:29 pm
I think Chill Touch has a range now. Maybe I was looking at something else last night.
Nov 26, 2024 7:42 pm
Nope, Elin got it right. It had a range in the old rules, they changed it to a touch spell (which makes sense with the spell's name).

Quick advice then, don't take melee cantrips unless you plan to be a melee mage. They let you swap one out each time you go up a level. Get a nice range, at least 60' (acid splash, mind sliver, ray of frost, toll the dead), 120 (fire bolt) if you are really a scaredy cat, then stay away from nasty people carrying sharp objects (other than your friends of course). The only touch damage cantrip worth carrying is shocking grasp because you can use it then run if they do close on you and it keeps them from attacking you as you run away. But it's situational, better to stay at least 35 feet away since normal move is 30.

If you are a melee mage (haven't played one), then great! I'll stay away and shoot arrows while you run up and get beat on. :-)
Nov 26, 2024 9:26 pm
I got it thank you!!!
I'm trying a rogue style warlock, I don't know if its a good choice of spells or not, just picked the ones I found fun with what I'm trying to do

for cantrips Chill toutch, True strike and acid splash.
Ohh and for eldritch invocations I got mage armor too.
Nov 26, 2024 10:07 pm
Warlock go with Eldritch Blast and never look back. It becomes obscene quite quickly.
Nov 26, 2024 10:25 pm
Great. Did you get agonizing and repelling blast? You can use them with any cantrip in the new rules including the 3 you mention so they get extra damage and knock opponents back. Fun!

So many great invocations now, hard to choose.

I will say that since you are melee, that makes us more interesting and versatile . . . assuming Emberskyes doesn't go all squishy, lol.

I read these now on the rules and they sound good for what I'm trying to do. I like the Repelling Blast one because it lets you push an enemy. Maybe when I reach level 2, I can pick one of them to use.
Nov 26, 2024 10:50 pm
Ohh I got unconscious XD
Nov 26, 2024 11:08 pm
@Sneepy Can you give a description of Wormwick's appearance? I loved this guy.
Nov 26, 2024 11:30 pm
Haha, glad you like him! I'm kind of enjoying him, too.

He's short, but no shorter than most goblins. He wears ragged gray clothing, but he does have a nice black vest he took from a dead guy in an alley, one time. He has no hair, and his skin is a pale green. His nose and ears are long (again, pretty common for his race), and his eyes are dark brown.

He tries to conceal his weapons beneath his clothing whenever possible. He collects a lot of other odd trinkets and keepsakes, too.

His experience in this city has been that most people despise goblins. He's very slow to trust anyone, but he has learned how to survive in the big city.
Nov 26, 2024 11:52 pm
You could get both (and you really want agonizing as it's a nice damage boost). You get 2 more invocations at level 2. And, you could retrain the mage armor one to the weapon pact or chain familiar or whatever you want as your 3rd one since you can retrain 1/level as well. Since you can already wear studded leather, it's only a difference of 1 on armor class and, as I said, there are so many great invocations.

I'm wondering for my character if I made a mistake going dex fighter rather than rogue. I think fighter is a little more combat effective but I really have nothing to do with my bonus action. May go with 2 shortswords rather than a scimiar and use my bonus for the 2nd attack to gain another vex.
Nov 26, 2024 11:54 pm
To be fair, we despise goblins outside of the city too.

Well shit... I can't submit a character because the game only allows that one specific character sheet. That's awkward.
Nov 27, 2024 6:55 am
I'll try to figure out a way to accept other character sheets in addition to what's already allowed.

What kind of character sheet did you make?

I just used one of the custom sheets.

There's probably a toggle or something somewhere in the game creation page.
Nov 27, 2024 3:06 pm
Yeah, you have to go back into the "Games" drop down then pick "My Games" and then go into this game then click the "Edit" function near the top.

Allowed Character Sheets - Dungeons & Dragons 5th <- Change this to Custom

I think this allows every character sheet option.
Nov 27, 2024 5:19 pm
Cool. I found the control panel and made it so that Custom sheets are permissible. Emberskyes, you should be able to submit your character now.
Nov 28, 2024 10:58 pm
Don't know if you guys are celebrating today, but whatever you're doing, I hope you have an awesome day.

Also, Badbaron, you're turn is next in combat. Let us know what you'd like to do.
Nov 29, 2024 12:36 am
Thanks, sorry, missed my cue.
Nov 29, 2024 1:47 am
No worries!

Wow, three misses in a row. This is not the monsters' day.
Nov 29, 2024 1:49 am
He deserves it >:)
Nov 29, 2024 2:19 am
Dang, he's got to fall eventually. Dezd would have been out a long time ago from that much.
Nov 29, 2024 3:42 am
Well done, guys. Emberskyes, I'm going to try to work your character into the story, now that the combat encounter has ended. Let me know if you have any suggestions on how we might do that.
Nov 29, 2024 4:09 pm
I didn't check with you on languages, Sneepy. Does each region have its own language or do you use the standard racial based versions? And if each state has its own, does the Badlands have one or multiple? Also, could Dezd take Thieves Cant as his third language based on his background even though he is not a rogue?

If we are using common and racial languages, I certainly recommend getting Common Sign to everyone in the group so we can communicate non-verbally if needed. Maybe have one of us, Dezd would do it, teach the others in the evenings around the fire. I don't know if we can add languages once playing but if you take it as an initial language, the learning could assume we have whatever simple concept we wish to communicate when needed as we learn more. Like ASL when you know the alphabet and common expressions and can spell out ideas you don't know how to say.
Nov 30, 2024 2:31 pm
badbaron says:

We'll just use the standard languages described in the game rules, for now. I'll try to figure out what other languages might be applicable, and how long it should take for player characters to learn new languages.
Nov 30, 2024 2:39 pm
Emberskyes, I'm going to tie you into the story by describing an NPC who apparently is an old friend of yours.

Dedge the Exile is a dwarven artificer. He's over three centuries old. His hair and his long beard are white as snow. He was exiled from his clan a few decades ago, but he's never told you exactly how that happened. He's also a tinkerer who loves sending adventurers off to test his new contraptions. Mariel and Dedge have worked together before--I will let Emberskyes describe those adventures, if necessary.
Dec 2, 2024 3:47 pm
I started a new chapter. We'll continue the story there.
Dec 2, 2024 8:04 pm
"A girl can dream." 🤣🤣 That's an awesome way to end that chapter, too.
Dec 4, 2024 12:07 am
I loved this line haha
Dec 4, 2024 12:09 am
And sorry friends I was overloaded with work yesterday so I couldn't do much reading.
Dec 4, 2024 1:33 pm
No worries! You're good.
Dec 6, 2024 3:12 am
These are some interesting developments in our story. Badbaron, how do you feel about sending Dezd on a solo adventure? That could be Chapter 3.
Dec 6, 2024 3:35 am
I have a lot more fun with others but willing to do it, sure.
Dec 6, 2024 3:55 am
OK. I'm just trying to figure out what we're going to have Dezd do. He's not necessarily moving in the same direction as the rest of the party. But, we can wait a moment and see how things turn out.
Dec 6, 2024 11:52 am
I understand. If the halfling doesn't give in, he is walking out and I don't know if any will follow him. On the other hand, his argument makes a ton of sense to anyone who was planning to seriously try to achieve both goals. The halfling seems either bargaining or like a person who will at best make a half hearted effort once her reward has been given to her from her comments.
