The thumping noise pauses momentarily after the whistle, which is enough to wake anyone that's asleep in the camp. Then it resumes, and Coda notices that it is a pace quicker this time, and definitely approaching.

Maenor leaps to his feet, mace and shield in hand. He looks to Coda to see where the threat is coming from.

Kalis groans softly as he awakens, legs still sore from their travels, "What's going on?" he asks groggily, though he is coherent enough to keep his voice down as he climbs to his feet.

"Well that's just great…" Daniel rises to his feet and retrieves his cane. "What's going down?"
Nov 2, 2016 2:55 am
"Sorry, I really wanted to test my whistle out." Coda shakes his head and whispers to himself "No, Coda, not the time for jokes." Instead of pointing like a normal person, Coda unnecessarily thrust with his lute in the direction of the noise "Over there, something big wants to join our slumber party."

"Right then, let's get this over with." Daniel unties his blindfold and wraps it around his arm, revealing a gold coin sewn into one side. "How far would you say this was?"

OOC:
Do I know roughly how far away it is?

In the quiet night air, the thump-thump sounds roughly 160 feet away now, and closing. Despite the steady pacing of the sound, you can tell that it is approaching rather quickly.

"See for yourself, it's coming from over there." Coda does more unnecessary thrusts with his lute until he realize who was asking the question. "Oh...uh, it's about 160 feet and depleting. You're facing the wrong way though, turn around."

Maenor positions himself between the sound and his comrades with his back to the fire, and tries to peer into the night to see if he can spot the source of the disturbance.

The fire emits a warm light around your camp for approximately 20 feet, although shadows from lumpy bedrolls, packs, and standing party members limit the amount of illumination. Unfortunately, the thing that approaches is still beyond the range of Maenor's keen eyes.

"…Right then." Daniel takes his place behind Maenor and taps his armband a few times, mumbling something in some archaic language.

As the sounds continues, it becomes a bit louder. It definitely calls to mind heavy footfalls of something large. You estimate it is now 120 feet away.

Geno awakens groggily, despite the urgency of Coda's whistle. When he sees the rest of the rebels standing at attention, he jolts up and draws his short sword. Hearing the heavy footfalls, he whispers to the others.

"What is that? Is it of the Empire?"

"I think it is only coming from one source and, therefore, too large to be the empire. I also don't see why they would be coming from the wilds." With the heavy footfall getting closer, Coda looks over to Daniel to see what he is doing.

Daniel is holding his cane with both hands, but the incantation he used doesn't seem to have had any obvious effect. "I don't suppose you all are ready for a fight?"
Nov 2, 2016 10:34 pm
Kalis double checks to make sure he has his component pouch and grabs his staff, ready to test out his magic against his first real foe. He takes a deep breath to steady himself, "Ready!"

Maenor and Geno are the first to see the creature, thanks to their darkvision. Standing 9 feet tall, a pot-bellied giant of a humanoid strides purposefully toward the campsite. Thick ropy muscles shift under a layer of fat, and a large head sits upon a tree trunk of a neck with tusks and crooked teeth visible from a slack and open jaw. It is dressed in animal hide covering only its immense girth and stumpy legs, and it hoists a bulging sack over its bare shoulder.

The others, without benefit of being able to see in the dark, can feel the earth vibrate with each step as it approaches. And then the footsteps halt, 60 feet away. There is a snuffling sound, like congested sniffing, then a grunt. Maenor and Geno see that the creature has indeed stopped its progress and simply stands there, squinting towards the fire and those gathered around.

With the footsteps stopping very close by, Coda figures it is a good time to end his joke and turns Daniel to face the correct way.
Nov 2, 2016 11:32 pm
Maenor peers into the darkness, trying to see if he recognizes the creature. Otherwise, he stays perfectly still.
