Episode 1: The Salvaged Job

The door at the end of the hallway (L5) is made of wooden planks banded with iron or some type of metal. There is a simple handle to pull the door open, and the hinges look worn but otherwise serviceable.

Carved into the wood is something resembling Elvish. However, while standard Elvish features a fine, controlled script, these carvings look crude and jagged. It is as though the writer gave little care for penmanship and opted to use the sharp end of a fireplace poker.

Daniel is unable to read the script, but everyone else recognizes the words, "Meeting Room." Maenor and Kalis, both of whom possessive of an academic mind, note that the words are very archaic and never used in contemporary times, while Coda's familiarity with language and lore enable him to deduce the same.

The door does not appear to be locked.

The door does not appear to be trapped.

The door creaks open as the hinges complain about their work. Beyond the threshold is a chamber, pitch black for a brief moment before your torchlight spills in and your darkvision adjusts. The walls of this room are rough-hewn as though chiseled with primitive tools and lack the refinement of the rest of the sepulcher, almost like a different hand was responsible.

In the middle of the chamber are four chairs, each in the cardinal directions and facing inward. They appear to have metal frames with wooden backs and seats, and look frail with age.

Surrounded by the chairs is a single candle, sitting in the center of the room in a small metal tin. The wax runs along the sides and has filled a thin layer inside the tin, and the wick is charred. However tall this candle was when it was first used is unknown, but a decent 6 inches remains.

Maenor and Kalis notice a discoloration on the floor. Careful to remain outside and not touch it, they manage to discern a faint circle centered on the candle, whose circumference is just outside the hind legs of the chairs to enclose all four pieces of furniture. As the two gaze upon the floor, they manage to pick out glyphs, lines, and smaller circles that form patterns. Each recognizes a theme of binding, though who or what would be bound is undetermined.

Maenor's keen eyes notice that the circle is broken, with heavy scratches on the floor interrupting some of the lines.

Kalis notices that even though the candle was used, it hasn't been for centuries.

Maenor frowns with anger as he says, "They summoned something they could not control...and now have released it upon the world."
Jul 26, 2017 12:24 pm
"It does appear that way," Kalis agrees, "Let's check down the hall. See if there's any clue as to what it was."

Maenor nods in agreement and sets off down the hall.

OOC:
Are you heading past the secret door and further down the hallway?
Jul 27, 2017 3:59 pm
OOC:
Coda is too exhausted to deal with secret doors and their puzzles so yes, for me, further down the hallway.
Jul 28, 2017 9:56 am
Frustrated by his earlier failure, Maenor takes another look at the door as they pass.

Coda waits near the corner, awaiting further instructions.

While they do not see anything outward in the hallway to indicate a means of opening the secret door, both Kalis and Maenor notice something peculiar. Despite the section of wall being flush with the ground and the ceiling, there are no scratches or gouges in either to indicate it ever opened into the corridor.

Buoyed by this discovery, Maenor pushes the door and finds that without much effort, the entire section glides forward. With a rumbling of stone against stone, the panel depresses into the wall. Maenor keeps pushing, and finally there is a break in the 24-inch wall. The door slides further into a hidden chamber until it stops against something and goes no further. It does manage to clear enough space from the wall to allow a person through, one at a time.

The room is fairly large, but plain. The walls are roughly chiseled and unplastered, casting a speckled pattern of shadow as your torchlight grazes over its imperfections. Set at the base of the wall are four chests made of stone, each one 3-feet wide and 2-feet tall, with a depth of 2 feet.

Kalis steps cautiously into the room, looking all around to make sure that there are no traps or anything that will be triggered simply through his movement.

Kalis sees nothing that catches his eye as being potentially dangerous or lethal. In fact, it looks like no one has been in this room for a very long time.

Maenor joins Kalis in the room and takes a closer look at one of the chests, opening his senses to the tone of the room.
