Coda lets out a wheezing laugh "What's the matter? It loOoOks like yoOoou've seen a ghoOoOoost." He tosses the tankard to the side "Did we remember to bring the brain extracting implements this time? I'd hate to have to dispose him like we had to that last guy. What? Do we have to? But that isn't any--Yes, Master."

Coda lets out a heavy sigh "It seems luck looks upon you cook, my Master wants us to do things the 'Ooold fashion way'. So I'll lay some rules down. Rule one: I follow one person, that person isn't you. I ask questions, you answer; easy. Rule two: My Master has limitation on their control on me, push those and you will regret it. If you so make a peep louder than I find pleasing, you will be the main dish for tonight--in fact I quite enjoy eating cooks, I find them to be a bit more potent in flavor, like they've been marinating themselves. Easy to follow, only two rules. How cool is that? Nod if we understand these rules and we'll be quiet."

The man's eyes frown. He does not yet nod, seemingly engrossed in parsing out the rules. However, realizing that he needs to supply an answer to something he doesn't quite understand, he begins to grow more panicked.

Finally, he vigorously nods.

"Wonderful." Coda lets out a small clap "Associate, if you are satisfied with his nod, you may release his mouth-hole. I'll start out easy so you can get a feel for how things are going to go... First question, what were you cooking?"
Dec 21, 2017 12:50 am
Maenor slowly lifts his hand from the man's mouth and rests his forearm across his throat instead, ready to act if the cook fails to comply.

The man's gaze continuously looks about for the source of the voice, despite knowing its general direction. "Um, supper," he says, slowly. He begins to turn his head to look behind him, when he feels the forearm upon his neck and freezes in place. "Beef stew," he croaks out.

"Mmmm, that does sound quite tasty. Though it does sound a bit peasanty, certainly not fit for the lion man in his palace-like room. Who is he and how come he lives extravagantly while the rest of you live in borderline squalor?"
Dec 21, 2017 3:55 pm
The man says, "He is The Master. This is his palace."
Dec 22, 2017 8:44 am
"That doesn't really answer my question, chef; his name is 'The Master'? Why do you serve him when he makes you sleep in trash even though he obviously has some semblance of a fortune?"
Dec 22, 2017 4:15 pm
The man swallows. "Um, he is The Master," he repeats nervously, instinctively flinching despite not seeing anything. "I serve him because he is my master, and I am his servant." His voice begins to rise in panic.
Dec 23, 2017 11:03 am
"Relax, these are the easy questions. Remember?

Coda whispers to Kalis "Brainwash? I'm thinking brainwash."

"But what is in it for you? 'The Master' gets free servicing and fancy living while you eek by in filth; seems like a horrible trade-off."
Dec 23, 2017 5:06 pm
"To serve is to live," says the man, gulping against Maenor's arm. "If I don't obey, I will become The Master's next meal, or torn apart by his jackalweres!"

Suddenly, his eyes grow wide. "The food! Please, I can't let the stew burn. Let me go!" He strains against Maenor's grasp.
OOC:
Maenor can make a Strength (Athletics) contest if he wants to maintain his grapple.

Kalis looks concerned, jackalweres? he thinks to himself, feeling sorry for this person.
Dec 27, 2017 1:07 pm
Maenor tightens his grip and calmly states, "The stew will be fine, you've only been gone a few minutes. How many people live here, other than your master? Do you have any prisoners?"

This questioning ends in an Elven curse as the man struggles free.

The man leaves Maenor's questions unanswered, and the room you are all in, hurrying back into the kitchen.
Dec 31, 2017 1:18 pm
Maenor follows quickly after, not making any hostile motion, but ready to act if the cook seems to do anything but cook.
Jan 2, 2018 6:41 pm
The man immediately heads to the fireplace and begins stirring the pot. He appears less frantic, now that he is in apparent control of the food.

He looks over his shoulder now, and seeing Maenor, gives the elf a once-over. He speaks quietly, "You don't look like a ghost."
Jan 4, 2018 10:20 am
Maenor smiles gently, "No, I'm quite real." He walks closer casually and, looking in the pot, asks, "Have you ever tried oregano?"

Meanwhile, he turns his keen hearing to focus on sounds of stirring from elsewhere in the complex.
Jan 4, 2018 4:36 pm
"Only got what's in the stores," says the man, flinching a bit at the approaching elf. He seems concerned about Maenor's proximity, obviously not fully trusting the stranger just yet. "Um... Whoever you are, you best get out before you're captured. And if they find you here, it'll be the end for both of us."

Maenor does not hear anything else from beyond the kitchen.
Jan 6, 2018 2:41 am
"Can't do that, I'm afraid," Kalis says, "We have things to take care of."
Jan 6, 2018 7:28 am
The man turns, pausing only briefly to assess the fact that there are now two individuals in the kitchen. He lifts the pot out of the fireplace and walks it over to the island to set it upon some tile. "Your loss, then," he says, his voice low. "Whatever you're going to do, do it away from here. If you're lucky, they'll just kill you quick."
