Ext. Suburbs - Civil Twilight, Miami 1995

Perhaps one would have expected a more lavish accomodation, something palatial, with well tended topiaries, collumns and pylasters of fine Parian marble. Black granite walkways, in a gated community. Dr. Justice Connel-Gulbane had none of that. For one of the richest individuals his living space was humble. A duplex nestled in a cozy corner in the suburbs. Wholly unremarkable save the enormous water tower adjacent to the property.

Four vehicles were parked in neat order. A 1989 BMW 750iL with wood paneling and silver paint, a 1977 Jeep Wrangler CW in Silver paint, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala, and a brand new Ford Ranger XL in silver. Four garages were open, inviting guests to park in safety and comfort. A charcoal grilling pit was set, already burning, with a rather large, muscle bound man with reddish brown hair cut into a mullet. He was working a bellows in the charcoal pit. He wore a bright orange welder's apron, a faded pink shirt that had a rooster stenciled on it, a pair of Tommy Hilfiger basketball shorts, and what appeared to be suede mocassins.

Immediately behind him was a well appointed plywood table, with a rather generous selection of sausages, and cheeses, several rib eye steaks, and unlabeled brown glass bottles in a steel bucket full of ice. A brandnew Behringer Boombox was playing the newest release from the band "Death" Perennial Quest. Justice Connel-Gulbane was headbanging to the intense riffs of the guitarist, polyrythmic drumming, and grating vocals of the singer.
OOC:
Let us begin play as if you have been invited to dinner to discuss something, if you are in the military you might already have some inkling of Dr. Connel-Gulbane's military contracts. As of the moment the word Stargate is unknown.

Because things just seem to work this way in my life, you all show up at almost the exact same time. This will be a Method Acting exercise. Allowing you to showcase your characterization, and become more familiar with your role as an actor.

The smell of sizzling meat and burning charcoal hit Veronica Rodriguez the moment she stepped into the backyard. The boombox blared some death metal, its aggressive riffs cutting through the Florida humidity.

She approached with the measured steps of someone who understood the weight of entering unknown territory. She was dressed in civilian clothes—a neatly pressed white button-up, dark jeans, and black boots that gave her a practical edge. But despite the casual attire, her no-nonsense military bearing was impossible to miss. Her sharp gaze swept over the scene, cataloging the exits, the unusual group of guests scattered around the yard, and the layout of the space. A subtle tic in her jaw betrayed her annoyance at the mystery surrounding this meeting.

Rodriguez wasn’t used to games, and this had the air of one. Dr. Justice Connel-Gulbane wasn’t a man to host casual barbecues without purpose, and his extensive military contracts weren’t given out on whims. The invitation had been vague, delivered by an intermediary with little to no detail. It had mentioned "opportunity" and "career advancement," but she didn’t like vague. Vague got people killed in her line of work. With a deep breath she moved forward, now scanning her surroundings for a bottle of beer.

A pea-green Datsun rolls down the road and stops in front of the duplex. After a moment a loud bang echoes through the neighborhood as it backfires. The man behind the wheel turns off the engine and throws it into park.

He opens the door and steps out, brushing a lock a scraggly mousy brown hair out of his bespectacled face. He turns and slams the door to his car hard. He starts to walk towards the duplex's door and then doubles back and gives the door another good hard push.

"Stay.", he mutters good with good nature and then walks towards the smell of delicious meats with a bright smile on his face.

Asher carefully reverses to park his car inside one of the open garages. Worst case scenario, he could reverse and rev forward as hard as possible to break through the door if he was trapped inside. Or it would be tempting to hotwire the Chevy Impala and have a bit of a joy ride while escaping for his life...

He shakes his head a little as the vehicle comes to a stop. He needed to stop playing out crazy scenarios in his head and focus on the task at hand. His commanding officer had ordered him to get in contact with Dr. Justice Connel-Gulbane to assist in a potentially important and probable future security risk project. No matter how crazy the doctor was, he did not want the project to continue any further without some type of military surveillance.

Asher's shoulders relaxed a little as he considered he probably wasn't the only military personnel attending this impromptu barbecue. His personal objective today was to enjoy a relaxing time with civilians while doing the bare minimum he was ordered to do. He was quite aware this mission was a "punishment" for his lack of willingness to work overtime and he was ready to be away from his own mini surveillance.

Asher gives a curt nod to fellow party attendants and grabs a plate to serve himself some of the sausages and cheeses while the ribeyes cook. He then wanders over to the apron-clad man and smiles a little.

"Dr. Connel-Gulbane I assume? Engineer Sergeant Major Asher Donahue. Nice set-up here. I have some experience with bellows, do you need a hand?"

Veronica, beer in hand now, kept her stance relaxed but purposeful, leaning lightly against the table as her eyes flicked between the two new arrivals. The man from the pea-green Datsun was the first to catch her attention, and not in a good way. His haphazard parking job, the rattletrap car, and the way he shoved the door like it owed him money set off her internal radar. She sized him up as he approached, noting his wiry frame, the nervous energy in his movements, and that bright smile that screamed either genuine good nature—or someone used to masking something.

"Civilian," she thought, "and probably not a threat, but definitely eccentric. Too comfortable for someone who’s just walked into this ...whatever this was." The way he wandered straight into the group without a hint of hesitation was almost enviable. Still, she wasn’t about to let her guard down around anyone just yet.

Her gaze shifted when the other car smoothly reversed into the garage. Now that was a man she understood—a fellow soldier, if she had to guess. His movements were efficient, deliberate, and precise, all hallmarks of someone with training. Her lips tightened slightly as she watched him scan the area, lingering on the Impala before shaking his head. Sizing up the escape routes. Smart. A little paranoid, maybe, but smart.

When he entered the yard and introduced himself to Connel-Gulbane, Veronica felt the faintest twinge of relief. If this was a mission, at least she wasn’t the only professional here. Sergeant Major Asher Donahue, she noted. The name didn’t ring any immediate bells, but his demeanor confirmed her instincts: he was here on business, just like her.

"Hey! Nice spread.", Elias said eyeing the various meats and cheeses. As Sergeant Major Donahue finished introducing himself to Connel-Gulbane. The Sergeant moved towards the cheeses leaving Elias alone with Dr. Connel-Gulbane.

Elias holds out his hand to his host and says, "Dr. Elias Duclair. Thanks for the invitation, Dr. Connel-Gulbane. Although, I got to say it’s a bit of a surprise. I was bound to leave for Brazil tomorrow, but your letter was convincing enough for the University to postpone my trip."

Asher moves out of the way and grabs another delicious Babybel cheese to munch on while other guests check in with their host. He furtively looks over the guest who comes after him, noticing the slightly untidy hair and more relaxed bearing. Most likely a civilian, but hard to tell anything more unless he eavesdropped. He contemplates whether eavesdropping on the conversation is part of the mission, but is distracted by the delicious cheese he is enjoying.

He takes a quick peek at the other guest in eyesight, a female with a neutral look on her face as she enjoys her drink, but the sharp eyes that meet his and the slight tic in her jaw make it clear she has military experience as well and is just as anxious as he to learn about the project the good doctor had invited them to.

It had turned out to be quite a party. Twenty One guests in total, various experts in their fields, physicists, doctors, special operators, engineers, linguists, historians.

The festive atmosphere carried on for about an hour. Meat, cheese, beer, music, new comers. Coversation built and lulled. Eventually there was a silence. Justice cracked another beer, his tenth - yet he had not yet flushed and seemed clear headed and level. "Thank you all for attending." He began and gestured to the fence between his apartment and the water tower. "Please, follow me, and hold your questions until the end. We have a lot of ground to cover and many things that will be inexplicable."

Dr. Connel-Gulbane approached a gate and removed a magnetized keycard, sliding it into a reader and opening the chain link gate. Pretty heavy security for a water tower. "Many of your cultural backgrounds have a common thread, a story that tells of otherworldly entities that came to our world while our species was young. And through the work of magic elevated us to greatness." He spoke as he leads the group to a large concrete shack, containing a large freight elevator. "I am a man of science, and a deeply spiritual man as well. I also do believe there to be at least some truth to these myths." Justice flipped a knife switch and a series of high pressure sodium lamps began to illuminate. They proceeded down by relays, in a concrete tunnel, deep into the bowels of the Earth.

"A reminder that you all are sworn to secrecy, anything you see from this point on, is not to be discussed outside of this site." Stepping onto the elevator he beckons his new colleagues to join him. "Welcome to Alpha Site."
Jan 5, 2025 10:38 pm
Elias follows the man into the elevator. He is very familiar with the gray area between myth and science. Most of his life, at least professional life, has been pursuing it. He puts himself against a wall towards the back of the elevator to allow room for everyone else.

"Alpha site? Sounds suler secret.", he thinks.
Jan 6, 2025 12:27 am
Asher shares a quick look with the people he has identified as military, shaking his head a little at their new employer's fascination with myths, but dutifully follows along. He does not plan to betray their leader's trust, but he is curious how much secrecy has been prepared by Dr. Connel-Gulbane. He floats to the back as he tests if his portable radio works so far down.

So is there a beta site?

In her head Veronica starts to count. She wants to get a feel for the layout of this site. How long is the corridor, how many persons do they meet on their way. Are they armed? Are they of known rank? How many floors? How far down are they going? Rather than asking, she remains silent and concentrated. The doctor's chitchat means little to her. She is eager to know what this is really about and what kind of work is expected of her.

As the elevator rolled slowly into the depths of the Earth. Red retroreflective paint on the ceiling of the shaft indicated "SL1."

"Sublevel 1, Fluidics and Geothermal. One of the benefits of building Alpha Site in a swamp was the abundance of natural gases and water which is used to power all of the integrated systems in the lower levels." The sole features one could see from the elevator was a set of massive blast doors, 20ft*15ft marked with hazard tape, an enormous pink intake pipe that emerged from deeper down the corridor and disappeared into the wall next to the blast door. And a blue pipe with retroreflective yellow paint indicating it was a radiation hazard. The loud hum of machinery was muffled from behind the blast door.

At SL2 the elevator stopped and the corridor opened into a large cavern. The scent of lush greenery and humidity gave the sublevel an rainforest scent. "Sublevel two is the atrium, living quarters, and soon to be home to a movie theater." As above the pink pipe continued deeper into the complex, though a branch broke off at this level. The blue pipe had disappeared into the bedrock.

The well lit room had a great deal of LED lighting and hydroponics, a wealth of foodstuffs appeared to be growing in shelved along the walls, and glass floors showed the flow of purified water pumping slowly through the floor. It was high tech and clearly made to give a sense of "awesome and powerful" while still being understated.

A woman in a well cut suit, red hair, green blouse and pencil skirt wearing a name tag that said Franziska approached boarded, said something to Dr. Connel-Gulbane and produced a set of keys which she relinquished to Justice. "I am Franziska Edwards, CIO and Head of Hospitality. I sign the paychecks and want to welcome you to Alpha Site. You will see me later for housing assignments and we can make better acquaintance there. Trust me, you are in for something special. So I will leave you too it." The two made an unlikely pair, everything about Franziska said business, professional, she was half Justice's size with a kind of rare but timid beauty. Contrasting sharply to Dr. Connel-Gulbane who looked like the poster child for the Daytona 500, redneck.

"Thanks Frannie. See you later." He said and turned to put the keys into the control board as "Frannie" walked back into the atrium disappearing in the beautiful garden.

"Sublevel 3 is restricted, and only accessible by myself, Frannie, and Chief of Security Andrew Lauman. It is where we will spend the majority of our time working. And now if you would please look, and witness the first of many artifacts you will find in this Site." As the elevator came to a stop at a single large opening in the bedrock, with engraved petroglyphs surrounding the entrance. Approximately 150m below the surface of the Earth. Justice directed the group to the sole feature.

As each sublevel was revealed, Asher's radio was quickly put away as he gaped at the engineering and technology laid before them.

So this is what civilians are capable of now...

Upon seeing the amazing living quarters, Asher's eyes widen and he already starts categorizing in his head the plants being grown that he can see.

Much more comfortable than base...

Once they reach the petroglyphs, Asher nods along with the civilian's awe, using his height to look over people's heads to try and see what lies behind the petroglyphs.

So they are expected to live and work here. What do they need her for? Rodriguez isn't the sciency type, she has her high school diploma - true - but she is neither a technician, nor an archeologist.

"So we're her to protect the government's artefacts?" She includes herself and the other military type. The third, the civilian kinda looked as if he already belonged here.

The acoustics in the chamber were odd, as if the passage ahead was swallowing the sound. The cavewalls, which had obviously been carved showed a level of intent and understanding difficult to achieve with modern architecture and engineering.

Justice shared the gleam of awe in Elias' eyes as he took in the artwork. "How old? We were hoping you could tell us. Though, there are quite similar styles of art in France. We are still trying to find a way to date the stone. Reminds me of Magdalenian cave art, but there are some radical differences."

Justice nodded in affirmative to Veronica. "Protect, obtain, explore, and ecavate. These caves are quite hazardous. Every see an Indiana Jones movie? A lot like that." He grinned at the notion clearly excited to get the work.

A flashlight announced the presence of a person approaching. A man, slightly heavier in build, but so similar in likeness he might have been a twin to Justice. Stepping from the rocks he presented a laminated plastic sheet to Dr. Connel-Gulbane and introduced himself. "Hi, Andrew Lauman, C-Sec. Listen Up I need Donahue, Duclair, Messer, Kowalski, and Rodriguez. Follow me!" He stood for a moment and looked at each person in the face, he already knew them.

Justice reviewed the laminate page and grimaced. "I had intended on giving you all the tour, but that will have to wait.
Please find your accomodations on your own, Franziska will help you."
Pulling his keys from the lift controls Justice broke for the cutaway still regarding the laminate sheet. He looked like he knew where he was going. "Looks like the work won't wait. Lieutenant Rodriguez, and Master Sergeant Donahue, looks like we will be spelunking, Mister Duclair, ever done any cave diving?" He was walking and talking in obvious agitation. Leaning against the entry way he pulled the waterproof marker free and signed the form.

Chief of security Andrew Lauman smirked, with a single huff that was similar to a laugh and opened up a duffel bag full of lighting equipment, head lamps, flashlights and chemical glowlightz indicating they should take them. "There's plenty." He said as if implying the others should feel free. If he was any indication, carrying dozens of the chemical glowlights was a smart choice.

The sound of the elevator, and the murmurs of the excited crowd of 15 returning to the second sublevel was rapidly vanishing as they left the others. Before the others had equipped themselves with lights, the massive freight elevator's sound had disappeared into a quiet rush of air in the cavern.

"Nothin' perilous. The diggers just found a new chamber, n'took some casualties. Nothin' major. We gonna help 'em though." Andrew had an bright look in his eyes, at a glance anyone knew some mania possessed him, it was in his eyes. Unwavering hazel eye contact, a fierce intensity and ruthless cunning marked on his face, a hard bulbous nose and copper greying beard, which was larger than his own head. "Don'chu worry. I gotcha."

Andrew was 38, but looked in his early 30's is 5'11" 252lbs, built like atlas, there were olympic weightlifters with a less developed physique. His voice a gravelly bass impossibly deep, yet soft spoken. He wore Mjlonir, Thor's hammer, on a gold chain around his neck, and three gold rings on his left hand, as well as a copper and onyx prayer mala, and a silver eagle armring. Carries a Ruger P95a with a massive blue laser integrated into the barrel. The laser was currently off.

Lieutenant Veronica Rodriguez tightens the strap of her gear as the descent begins. The air grows colder the farther they go.

"What kind of casualties are we talking about?" Veronica asks in a steady and professional voice. She isn't one for games and Lauman's manic grin doesn't sit well with her. "Are there any environmental hazards we need to know about? - gas pockets, unstable rock formations? Anything alive down there?"

"A broken leg, n' a bad contusion. Nothin' life threatenin' but they ain't gonna be able to swim out without help." Lauman said as he ushers the group along a left hand path that lead down past the thermocline, it had been getting colder, but the air grew more humid, and warmer now. And the steep grade carried them ever deeper. "There probably are hazards, but nothing I have seen or heard of. No gas or nothin' like that so far either. Keep an eye out for 'gators we're in the Everglades. For now, I am callin' this a'one off situation."
Jan 13, 2025 5:27 pm
Asher stands a little straighter and starts marching after Lauman as he explains the situation to the group. He is no stranger to following orders, but the lack of preparation and human life at risk still makes his blood pressure go up. He moves over to the equipment and begins to gear up to be one of the first to go down into the unknown.

"Understood. I see you have something to fight off the gators, but do we have a first aid kit and a rescue basket to bring the civilian up?"
Jan 13, 2025 9:54 pm
"Don't got a stretcher, maybe you can rig up a travois. But if it's just a broken leg I can carry 'em out in the worst case. As far as gators go, never needed to use Rita. They don't like goin' this deep." Lauman patted his handgun affectionately and pointed to a set of ropes leading into the dark, a cyan colored glowstick was already at the bottom, it looked to be about 20ft down again. The air was now hot, about 82 degrees farenheit.

Someone was moving down there, you could see the silohuette wave. It was most probably Justice.

Oh whoops I had intended roll under. Lets go with that, my brain is a little off still since I stopped drinking alcohol 60 days now. So rolling over your attribute is a fail. No need to add anything. And since the AA roll failed there is no consequence for failure.

How I would interpert Duclair's 2 is that he found descent surprisingly easy.

Donahue's 10 is some kind of minor struggle. On a fail with an AA success it would be catastrophic failure. In this case maybe he gets tangled in the rope with no damage but his pride.

The descent wasn't too difficult, now near 500ft below the surface of the earth it was now quite warm approaching hot. The humidity was stifling, Justice waited at the base of the deadfall and continued steadily downhill. Into the depths of the earth. "About fifteen minutes at a hustle down, watch your step." Justice cautioned and he stayed to the lefthand side of the stream. "Careful of cave water it can carry disease." The man seemed quite familiar with the tunnel. His familiar step carried him surely. "We will need to swim though." The water level was rising as the passage narrowed, soon they were ankle deep, then knee deep in water. A single furrow of light cut through into the subterranean grotto. A bend in the tunnel quickly vanquished the moonlight.

The tunnel narrowed, it was now cramped Justice had stopped and began to crack glowsticks. He was tying them off at intervals on fishing line, every ten feet or so. "Alright buddy system now. Follow the lights, do not deviate, there are hundreds of miles of tunnel down here. This is the worst leg of it. There's no air for one hundred fifty feet, or about one minute at a good pace. I will mark it with red glowsticks so it doesn't ruin your night vision." After tying off fifteen lengths of his fishing line Justice hung the line from a old rusted piton just over the mouth of a tunnel that lead into the water. He turned on his headlamp, and a handheld flashlight. "Questions?"

The water was warm, not yet body temperature but enough that it didn't cause a shock when immersing in it. It smelled mildly alkaline, clean though. And whike it appeared murky from above, under the surface it was crystal clear.

Traversal though not easy went rather smoothly. Donahue managed to get a clear indication of depth as he caught many glittering geometric shapes at the base of the fissure. He could see stress fractures, in concentric octagonal protrusions from the rock. Some immense force had split a vein through the rock which created the channel they were diving in. He wasn't far from the bottom and could easily grab one of the glittering triangles from the recess.

Rodriguez had no difficulty in the dive. Training and discipline served her well, following the string of glowlights to their end brought her up into a fissure, and a high vaulted limestone recess in the rock. The air in the recess was sweet, and she could feel a current, it was still hot, now uncomfortably hot. She could see Justice at the far end of the recess. And behind Andrew looked at his dive watch. Donahue emerged, followed by Kowalsky. Messer came up last clipping the line as he did, breaking the strand free.

Tense seconds passed and there was still no sign of Elias...

"Lost one, I'll get 'im." Andrew dived before anyone could respond.

Elias had a tough time of it, when he followed the line his hand brushed the thin filament, and he felt it go slack. The string drifted in the water, neutrally bouyant it curled in on itself. The way forward was no longer clear. Elias's lungs began to burn as he ran low on air. The vein had many branches running off. It was a labyrinth. He could feel something heavy disturb the water as his sense of time became distorted. Just before he committed to a path Andrew's flashlight near blinded him. A powerful hand on his shoulder set his bearing correct and he could feel himself being pulled. Tense seconds past, another minute. Elias' lungs felt like they were on fire, his blood burned like battery acid. That first breath as Andrew and Elias broke the surface was the sweetest of his life.

Justice whistled for everyone's attention. "Feel alive yet?" Andrew whooped in response and guided Elias to the wall waiting for him to catch his breath. Messer swam to Elias and checked him briefly.

"You'll be alright, just catch your breath." Messer reassured Elias, the Doctor's Without Border's patch on his soaked utilities adding some credence to his diagnosis.

Veronica stands and nods back. She watches Elias gulp down air like it is salvation. Possibly a close call. She wipes the water from her face, her eyes never leaving Elias as he leans heavily against the slick rock wall, chest heaving. The dim, flickering glowsticks cast eerie shadows across the limestone recess, and the humid air presses against her skin like a damp blanket.

Rodriguez rolls her shoulders, shifting the weight of her gear, and eyes the way ahead. "Shall we?" she asked, her tone clipped but steady. She isn’t one for theatrics, and right now, they have a job to do. "Are you ready to continue?" she asks Elias in a kind voice. She has worked with civillians before. For him to be part of their team, he has to have useful skills or vital knowledge. Veronica supposes they will have to keep him safe in order to do their jobs properly.

The remainder of the dive proceeded without incident, with plenty of gaps in the stone for which to take a breath progreas was slow but steady.

At the end it opened to a chamber dimly lit, with the excavation team huddled around two people, one with a clearly broken leg, the other bleeding heavily from a deep gash in their arm.

Justice panned the room with the flashlight and stopped, staring transfixed at what lay beyond a collapsed false wall. An engraved coverstone. It was 30ft square, and the meticulous detail implied it held great significance.

Upon seeing the wounded Kowalsky and Messer immediately began diagnosis.

Everyone roll Non-Fighting ability

As before roll under your attribute.

If you succeed feel free to narrarate what you did to help in either treatment or securing transport for the wounded. Maybe even calming down the uninjured diggers.

Get creative.

Or let me narrarate.

In the event that everyone fails we may burn a trait or a flaw, for a flashback. We will burn that bridge when we come to it.

"Thanks all, yeah. I’m ok.", he says grateful for the kindness. Once he gets his bearings his eyes lock onto the engraved cornerstone. He steps forward as Kowaski and Messer jump to action. He’s brought back to reality and looks towards the scared miners. He goes towards the man with the broken leg. "What can I do to help?", he says.

As Justice's light focused on the engraving, Asher is momentarily mesmerized as well. The groans of the wounded snap him back to reality and he moves to assist Kowalsky and Messer, attempting to jimmy together a travois as recommended by Lauman before.

result mitigated failure

Consequence:

Elias, the stress is getting to you, you take your first of 3 hits. Don't worry, a bit of R&R is coming. Don't think of this as if you are experiencing a catastrophic break. More along the lines of the cinematic trope "getting to old for this shit." Sometimes the stress relief of a cigarette and taking some time to think is better for health than dwelling on our setbacks.

Asher, there's nothing worse than trying your hardest and not being able to make a dent of it. You can take the flaw Mild Actychiphobia or hit 1/3. Actychiphobia is the fear of failure. Mild Actychiphobia manifests as procrastination and unrealistic expectations, we all have it to an extent Donahue is just experiencing it a bit harder right now.

Rodriguez, you succeeded, probably well enough to salvage the silver lining out of a shit situation. All in all you get to be the heroine because in a raw deal, the person who succeeds first tends to be the person who saves the lives of everyone. Bask in it, it really is your moment.
"This is real bad. He's lost alot of blood." Messer was suturing the wound closed, pink arterial blood had already started to congeal on the stones. The culprit was the same stone from the false wall that had broken the femur of the other digger. Patrick O'Malley was ashen white, and getting worse by the second. Messer was working hard to save the man's life, but it was too little too late. O'Malley died of bloodloss - maybe if the team had moved a little quicker, but there was no time to consider alternatives.

"Shit, he was a civilian too." Justice groaned and held O'Malley's face staring into the dead man's eyes. Memorizing the details of it, he closed the bodies eyes and grimaced. Shaking his head he moved over to help rig a travois with Donahue, though with only duct tape and aged roots this deep the end result was only slightly better than nothing.

As Messer was busy with O'Malley, Kowalsky was working on the injured leg. He had worked Johnson, the injured man's belt, between his teeth. Grabbing Duclair's hand's he placed them on Johnson's hip. "Hold him steady. I have to set this before we move him." Kowalsky ordered, he was firm but not guff in his manner realizing Elias was not his subordinate. Johnson was unconscious, luckily for him, as setting the compound fracture was a two step process.

Kowalsky made sure Elias was braced before yanking hard at Johnson's knee. The visceral pop caused Elias' stomach to churn and he involuntarily released Johnson's hip, he was feeling quite nauseous. Being in contact with Johnson, he had felt the vibration through him it had awakened a primal aversion but he had managed to hold his dinner. Kowalsky pushed the femur back together, it was a pulpy sound as the vacuum in the body was suddenly filled.

Lauman helped load Johnson onto the stretcher. He waved the group to his light. "Any of you have experience wit' CASEVAC?"

Messer was recording time of death in a logbook. Cause of death, and moving over to resuscitate Johnson.

Justice pulled an emergency blanket over O'Malley's body and looked around the group. "I'll need someone to help recover O'Malley with me. Not you four, you should swim back now." He motioned to the four diggers who were obviously exhausted from the ordeal. They departed forthwith. Leaving the seven to decide how to proceed.

Rodriguez crouches next to Johnson’s stretcher, eyes scanning the field-expedient rig with a critical, practiced gaze. It isn’t pretty, but it will hold—barely. Her hands move efficiently, securing the last strips of tape with a sharp tug. She takes a deep breath, tasting the stale, metallic tang of blood in the cavern air, and then speaks with the kind of steadiness that only comes from years of training.

"We’re not gonna feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got one man down, and another who still needs to get out of here in one piece. So let's do what we can—adapt and execute." Rodriguez glances at the blanket and imagines O'malley's still form underneath for a second. She doesn't dwell on it. Mourning comes later.

She turns to Lauman, eyes sharp. "You asked about CASEVAC? Yeah, I’ve done a few. Here’s the deal—we stabilize Johnson as best we can, keep him horizontal, and move him slow. We swim him out using a buoyant drag technique. Minimal movement, maximum control."

Without considering her position within the group too much Rodriguez already mentally calculates logistics: "Donahue, Kowalsky - we need one to take point and two to keep Johnson steady during the swim. Messer, we'll need you close if he crashes on the way. Elias?" She meets his gaze trying to emanate a sense of calm efficiency. "It is important someone carries whatever Messer needs. It is vital you stick close, alright?"

Once more looking at each of them, Rodriguez says: ""We do this by the numbers, and we do it smart. Nobody overextends, nobody takes risks. We stick to the plan, we get out in one piece. Understood?" O'Malley - they will have to secure him and move him last. First priority is the living.

"Yes", Elias says forcing back the sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. "Absolutley, on it. Messer, what do I need to carry?", he says as he composes himself focuses on Rodriguez’s orders.

Probably not great for Donahue, but I think the flaw sounds exactly like something he would have so going with mild actychiphobia.
Asher goes through the motions to finish building the travois, but his eyes are irresistibly drawn to O'Malley and the staggering amount of blood. He stops breathing for a few moments, the world seems to fade to a pinhole and all he can hear is his drill instructor and his father, shouting how his failures, his mistakes will lead to deaths. When Rodriguez calls his name and makes eye contact, he slowly starts to come back to reality and now stands ramrod straight as he listens to her direction.

"Yes ma'am, I'll help with stabilizing the civilian."

Hopefully being part of a team will help make up for any further failures that inevitably come for him.

Result: Mitigated Failure

Donahue and Duclair both take a hit.

Donahue is at 1/3
Duclair is at 2/3

Reminder this represents stress and fatigue not necessarily injury. A highly demanding job will take its toll.

Once more Rodriguez capitalizing on success finds herself pulling the squad forward and saving the day.
Messer grimaces as whatever he injected into Johnson hadn't worked as desired. He pulled apart his bag and preemptively intubated Johnson, then lashed a quick splint with duct tape and a bit of plastic rod he had kept for just this circumstance. He hands an O2 Bag and Mask to Duclair. Looking at the water in the cave and wincing. "Hold these, look at the tubes, prepare to attach the bag as soon as we get him to the other side. He is going to drown on the way there. That means he will seize. Can you restrain him?" He looked to Lauman who immediately nodded then over to Donahue as well looking for confirmation.

Justice had tied up O'Malley's body in the emergency blanket and moved it over to the water's edge. Seeing that Veronica had taken things well in charge he shouldered O'Malley and started to make for the water, quickly sinking to his shoulders. "I will make sure the lights are secured as I move ahead." He said and began to swim ahead into the gloom of the cave. Kowalsky followed immediately behind him. They traded.who carried the body at the very edge of the light. Just before the dive, then, diving they vanished.

The hard part came when Johnson was in the water, as long as his head was kept above the surface progress was easy. Three people carrying made the weight manageable. Johnson was stable for now. They came to the shelf. The only way through was to dive. Messer was clearly distressed but what else could be done? "He is going to flail, keep him on the stretcher." He was giving advice mostly to himself at this point. He took a deep breath and counted down from three on his left hand. At count zero he pulled the travois down and began to swim hard into the depth.

Bubbles poured from Johnson's mouth and nose as they descended. And almost as soon as they stopped Johnson took a lungful of water. His nervous system, in panic began to thrash. His arms and legs flailed as he actively fought against rescue the subconscious desperate to live impeded the life saving efforts. As his mind's aggression limiters were unconscious the bodies strength was amplified. He kept breaking free of their holds.

During the traversal, one of Johnson's kicks slipped past Donahue's block and caught him right in the diaphragm, precious air was forced out, but there was no turning back. Grit alone carried Donahue forward. His lungs burning, limbs felt like lead, and his blood burned, but Donahue pushed on.

Duclair in an agitated state was likewise burning through oxygen at an increased rate. His experience only a few minutes before near drowning on the way in was fresh in his mind. It was all he could do to not panic. At the end Veronica leading the way, they pulled Johnson and each other from the water. Her effort to lead saving more than one life.

Messer didn't even allow himself to catch his breath rolling Johnson on his side. "Get the bag attached." He panted, and began to strike Johnson hard between the shoulder blades. "Soon as you do, pump once every three seconds."

Elias found it easy to attach the bag to the two tubes in the IT tube. Johnson wasn't clearing the water on his own. So when he first compressed the bag, the fluid was pushed free. It squirt out Johnson's nose, snot and cave water squirted free. And Johnson immediately sucked in a lungful of air. Shock and adrenaline rousing him. Johnson's eyes snapped to full wakefulness, he clung to Elias, the worst of the shock fading quickly. Elias sensed that he had just saved this man.

Moments later Justice and Kowalsky lowered two additional ropes from above, the day was won.

Mission Accomplished

Feel free to roleplay after this point exiting the cave system.

Anyone who succeeded a roll this mission(all of you) may make an NFA roll and requisition a piece of equipment.

It is also a good time to decide your readiness. Do you want to jump back into the action tomorrow? Or wait a week for some well desrved R&R?

"You’re alright. We got you.", Elias smiles at the nearly drowned man and pats him on the shoulder. He runs a slightly trembling hand through wet hair and steps back to let Messer secure him to the ropes.

He reaches into his breast pocket for his pack of lucky strikes and pulls out a soggy mess. "$&@&, don’t need them anyway.", he says putting them back into his pocket.
OOC:
Alright! We didn’t drown or lose anyone despite all of Elias being in over his head. Do hits reset after a nights sleep or do they linger? If the reset after a long rest, I’d like to jump back into action tomorrow.
Also, I have a question about the hit points. Is it 2 out of 3 total hits or are we doing a harm pool and a trauma pool? For instance is that 2 points in trauma and 3 in harm? If so how many per pool can we endure? I’m trying to organize my sheet.

HIts are for both mental and physical trauma, you will get the back after 1 week of R&R, or at the beginning of a mission you can roll NFA to restore 1 hit. Common sense prevails, you may find drugs or relief to restore them.

They don't represent the death tally, you as the main character can only die if it makes sense in the narrative. Running out of hits means you are incapacitated in some way. And maybe dying but not dead.

As they finally ascend out of the caves, Donahue collapses on all fours onto the cold floor and takes a deep breath before being called back to the situation.

"Donahue! Ropes!"

Donahue snaps up and starts helping haul up the ropes to bring up Johnson and the rest of the group. Having a task he can focus on helps to ground him. He puts out a helping hand to bring Elias up and he does what he can to support Rodriguez's excellent leadership.

As a creative exercise, how about a paragraph or two at what you all do at O'Malley's wake. Just picture food and booze and a celebration of life.

In the industry we would call this unscripted hash. A way to establish traits, flaws, and motivations for the audience. Make love to the camera.

Take your time for your health!
Back on the surface, Asher feels like he can breathe fully again. However, his breath catches when he sees O'Malley's coffin and again when he sees the family and friends left behind. If only he had been better at keeping his head under pressure. Perhaps this was why his CO had assigned him to the mission: to get back into the field and gain more experience.

As a loved one talks about O'Malley's full life, a beer is placed in his hand. A toast is called for and he holds up his beer in honor of a fallen colleague. He is reminded about part of the reason he joined the military: to serve and dedicate his life to something greater. He takes a large swig and resolves to work hard on the mission O'Malley has given his life for.

He glances at the others who tried to save O'Malley: Duclair, Rodriguez, Justice, Kowalsky, Messer.

Then he looks over at Johnson, the one they were able to save.

Despite the mixed results, everyone had made their best efforts under difficult circumstances. If only they could continue with the same enthusiasm with better results for whatever was coming their way in the future...

Veronica Rodriguez stood near the cooler, scanning the somber crowd. It was impossible to ignore the weight in the air—the grief, the guilt, the unspoken questions. She had her own share of them, but tonight wasn’t the time to let them take over.

Her gaze landed on Asher Donahue, standing a little apart from the others. He looked like he was still holding his breath, like he was bracing for another wave to hit him. She recognized that feeling all too well. Picking up a cold beer from the cooler, she crossed the room. Just in time for the next toast, Veronica pressed the bottle into his hand. He looked a million miles away.

Veronica lifted her beer alongside the others, her grip tightening around the bottle. She didn’t look at the coffin—not directly. It was too soon. Donahue glanced around, his eyes moving over the team: Duclair, Justice, Kowalsky, Messer... and then her. When his gaze shifted to Johnson, Veronica’s chest tightened. She’d done everything she could in the field, just like the others. They’d saved one, but not the other. The math didn’t feel fair. It never did.

She took a drink. They’d all done their best, she reminded herself. And if O’Malley had been standing here instead of lying in that box, he’d probably have told them to knock off the self-pity and focus on the mission ahead.

Veronica lowered her bottle and turned her attention back to the group. For her team and for the next fight waiting for them, she resolved to do just that.

Elias sits in a wooden chair of to the side nursing a bear. He smiles distractedly as loved ones raise their glasses to O’Malley.

He raises his lukewarm beer.

He knows he tried, bit still an overwhelming feeling of quilt fills his soul. He should have tried harder. Maybe if he wasn’t so damn incompetent things would have gone differently.

He gives assurances and comfort to the family, and that makes him feel even more oit of place. A man died, very clearly a good man.

He tries not to let his own quilt and sorrow show on his face the night progresses. It’s not fair to the family. It’s not fair to O’Malley.

OOC:
very good!

Everyone come up with a trait, the purpose of traits is to be burned and succeed before a dice roll fails. You may use a trait to trigger a flashback and declare how something from your past helped you succeed against adversity, at any time.

A good example might be:
Dr. Daniel Jackson in his years of studying ancient histories learned the importance of rituals to all cultures and introduces a ritual he learned to win over the heart of Shaa're in front of her father.

The purpose of a flaw is to be burned and fail forward. You may burn a flaw when everyone has failed, to trigger a flashback. In such a case something that happened in your character's past might have caused them to fail, but in such a way that the loss isn't catastrophic.

A good example might be:
Dr. Daniel Jackson was sickly and when the SG team was hiding from the Horus Guards on Abydos, he sneezed, and was captured, but this spared the lives of the soldiers and preserved their cover. It also lead to him learning about Ra and the threat he posed to humanity.

This is not Levelling Up, perse, but because Attributes are powerful it represents advancement and character growth. So congrats for surviving to level 2!
Feb 10, 2025 6:06 pm
OOC:
Glad you're back :)

as for traits:
Veronica has an unyielding resolve that shines brightest in the face of adversity. When the stakes are high and others falter, her determination fuels her creativity and focus. She digs deep, finding inspiration in the challenges she’s faced and overcome in the past, using those lessons to rise above the current obstacle.

I am thinking some kind of bonus when the sh*t hits the fan

for flaws:
Veronica’s unyielding determination sometimes blinds her to the reality that a situation is beyond saving. She struggles to let go, pouring herself into lost causes even when it puts herself and others at risk. Her inability to step back or accept defeat can turn a bad situation into a worse one.

She is like a dog with a bone and struggles with any kind of retreat :)

Hope these fit your concepts!
Feb 11, 2025 2:49 pm
OOC:
Ditto!

Let's see, for trait/flaw, maybe we could go with Asher's reliance on doing things by the book? This can be a helpful trait to make sure nothing is missed, but can also be a flaw if he cannot be flexible for the situation.
