Ext. Suburbs - Civil Twilight, Miami 1995

Perhaps one would have expected a more lavish accomodation, something palatial, with well tended topiaries, collumns and pylasters of fine Parian marble. Black granite walkways, in a gated community. Dr. Justice Connel-Gulbane had none of that. For one of the richest individuals his living space was humble. A duplex nestled in a cozy corner in the suburbs. Wholly unremarkable save the enormous water tower adjacent to the property.

Four vehicles were parked in neat order. A 1989 BMW 750iL with wood paneling and silver paint, a 1977 Jeep Wrangler CW in Silver paint, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala, and a brand new Ford Ranger XL in silver. Four garages were open, inviting guests to park in safety and comfort. A charcoal grilling pit was set, already burning, with a rather large, muscle bound man with reddish brown hair cut into a mullet. He was working a bellows in the charcoal pit. He wore a bright orange welder's apron, a faded pink shirt that had a rooster stenciled on it, a pair of Tommy Hilfiger basketball shorts, and what appeared to be suede mocassins.

Immediately behind him was a well appointed plywood table, with a rather generous selection of sausages, and cheeses, several rib eye steaks, and unlabeled brown glass bottles in a steel bucket full of ice. A brandnew Behringer Boombox was playing the newest release from the band "Death" Perennial Quest. Justice Connel-Gulbane was headbanging to the intense riffs of the guitarist, polyrythmic drumming, and grating vocals of the singer.
OOC:
Let us begin play as if you have been invited to dinner to discuss something, if you are in the military you might already have some inkling of Dr. Connel-Gulbane's military contracts. As of the moment the word Stargate is unknown.

Because things just seem to work this way in my life, you all show up at almost the exact same time. This will be a Method Acting exercise. Allowing you to showcase your characterization, and become more familiar with your role as an actor.

The smell of sizzling meat and burning charcoal hit Veronica Rodriguez the moment she stepped into the backyard. The boombox blared some death metal, its aggressive riffs cutting through the Florida humidity.

She approached with the measured steps of someone who understood the weight of entering unknown territory. She was dressed in civilian clothes—a neatly pressed white button-up, dark jeans, and black boots that gave her a practical edge. But despite the casual attire, her no-nonsense military bearing was impossible to miss. Her sharp gaze swept over the scene, cataloging the exits, the unusual group of guests scattered around the yard, and the layout of the space. A subtle tic in her jaw betrayed her annoyance at the mystery surrounding this meeting.

Rodriguez wasn’t used to games, and this had the air of one. Dr. Justice Connel-Gulbane wasn’t a man to host casual barbecues without purpose, and his extensive military contracts weren’t given out on whims. The invitation had been vague, delivered by an intermediary with little to no detail. It had mentioned "opportunity" and "career advancement," but she didn’t like vague. Vague got people killed in her line of work. With a deep breath she moved forward, now scanning her surroundings for a bottle of beer.

A pea-green Datsun rolls down the road and stops in front of the duplex. After a moment a loud bang echoes through the neighborhood as it backfires. The man behind the wheel turns off the engine and throws it into park.

He opens the door and steps out, brushing a lock a scraggly mousy brown hair out of his bespectacled face. He turns and slams the door to his car hard. He starts to walk towards the duplex's door and then doubles back and gives the door another good hard push.

"Stay.", he mutters good with good nature and then walks towards the smell of delicious meats with a bright smile on his face.

Asher carefully reverses to park his car inside one of the open garages. Worst case scenario, he could reverse and rev forward as hard as possible to break through the door if he was trapped inside. Or it would be tempting to hotwire the Chevy Impala and have a bit of a joy ride while escaping for his life...

He shakes his head a little as the vehicle comes to a stop. He needed to stop playing out crazy scenarios in his head and focus on the task at hand. His commanding officer had ordered him to get in contact with Dr. Justice Connel-Gulbane to assist in a potentially important and probable future security risk project. No matter how crazy the doctor was, he did not want the project to continue any further without some type of military surveillance.

Asher's shoulders relaxed a little as he considered he probably wasn't the only military personnel attending this impromptu barbecue. His personal objective today was to enjoy a relaxing time with civilians while doing the bare minimum he was ordered to do. He was quite aware this mission was a "punishment" for his lack of willingness to work overtime and he was ready to be away from his own mini surveillance.

Asher gives a curt nod to fellow party attendants and grabs a plate to serve himself some of the sausages and cheeses while the ribeyes cook. He then wanders over to the apron-clad man and smiles a little.

"Dr. Connel-Gulbane I assume? Engineer Sergeant Major Asher Donahue. Nice set-up here. I have some experience with bellows, do you need a hand?"

Veronica, beer in hand now, kept her stance relaxed but purposeful, leaning lightly against the table as her eyes flicked between the two new arrivals. The man from the pea-green Datsun was the first to catch her attention, and not in a good way. His haphazard parking job, the rattletrap car, and the way he shoved the door like it owed him money set off her internal radar. She sized him up as he approached, noting his wiry frame, the nervous energy in his movements, and that bright smile that screamed either genuine good nature—or someone used to masking something.

"Civilian," she thought, "and probably not a threat, but definitely eccentric. Too comfortable for someone who’s just walked into this ...whatever this was." The way he wandered straight into the group without a hint of hesitation was almost enviable. Still, she wasn’t about to let her guard down around anyone just yet.

Her gaze shifted when the other car smoothly reversed into the garage. Now that was a man she understood—a fellow soldier, if she had to guess. His movements were efficient, deliberate, and precise, all hallmarks of someone with training. Her lips tightened slightly as she watched him scan the area, lingering on the Impala before shaking his head. Sizing up the escape routes. Smart. A little paranoid, maybe, but smart.

When he entered the yard and introduced himself to Connel-Gulbane, Veronica felt the faintest twinge of relief. If this was a mission, at least she wasn’t the only professional here. Sergeant Major Asher Donahue, she noted. The name didn’t ring any immediate bells, but his demeanor confirmed her instincts: he was here on business, just like her.

"Hey! Nice spread.", Elias said eyeing the various meats and cheeses. As Sergeant Major Donahue finished introducing himself to Connel-Gulbane. The Sergeant moved towards the cheeses leaving Elias alone with Dr. Connel-Gulbane.

Elias holds out his hand to his host and says, "Dr. Elias Duclair. Thanks for the invitation, Dr. Connel-Gulbane. Although, I got to say it’s a bit of a surprise. I was bound to leave for Brazil tomorrow, but your letter was convincing enough for the University to postpone my trip."

Asher moves out of the way and grabs another delicious Babybel cheese to munch on while other guests check in with their host. He furtively looks over the guest who comes after him, noticing the slightly untidy hair and more relaxed bearing. Most likely a civilian, but hard to tell anything more unless he eavesdropped. He contemplates whether eavesdropping on the conversation is part of the mission, but is distracted by the delicious cheese he is enjoying.

He takes a quick peek at the other guest in eyesight, a female with a neutral look on her face as she enjoys her drink, but the sharp eyes that meet his and the slight tic in her jaw make it clear she has military experience as well and is just as anxious as he to learn about the project the good doctor had invited them to.

It had turned out to be quite a party. Twenty One guests in total, various experts in their fields, physicists, doctors, special operators, engineers, linguists, historians.

The festive atmosphere carried on for about an hour. Meat, cheese, beer, music, new comers. Coversation built and lulled. Eventually there was a silence. Justice cracked another beer, his tenth - yet he had not yet flushed and seemed clear headed and level. "Thank you all for attending." He began and gestured to the fence between his apartment and the water tower. "Please, follow me, and hold your questions until the end. We have a lot of ground to cover and many things that will be inexplicable."

Dr. Connel-Gulbane approached a gate and removed a magnetized keycard, sliding it into a reader and opening the chain link gate. Pretty heavy security for a water tower. "Many of your cultural backgrounds have a common thread, a story that tells of otherworldly entities that came to our world while our species was young. And through the work of magic elevated us to greatness." He spoke as he leads the group to a large concrete shack, containing a large freight elevator. "I am a man of science, and a deeply spiritual man as well. I also do believe there to be at least some truth to these myths." Justice flipped a knife switch and a series of high pressure sodium lamps began to illuminate. They proceeded down by relays, in a concrete tunnel, deep into the bowels of the Earth.

"A reminder that you all are sworn to secrecy, anything you see from this point on, is not to be discussed outside of this site." Stepping onto the elevator he beckons his new colleagues to join him. "Welcome to Alpha Site."
Jan 5, 2025 10:38 pm
Elias follows the man into the elevator. He is very familiar with the gray area between myth and science. Most of his life, at least professional life, has been pursuing it. He puts himself against a wall towards the back of the elevator to allow room for everyone else.

"Alpha site? Sounds suler secret.", he thinks.
Jan 6, 2025 12:27 am
Asher shares a quick look with the people he has identified as military, shaking his head a little at their new employer's fascination with myths, but dutifully follows along. He does not plan to betray their leader's trust, but he is curious how much secrecy has been prepared by Dr. Connel-Gulbane. He floats to the back as he tests if his portable radio works so far down.

So is there a beta site?

In her head Veronica starts to count. She wants to get a feel for the layout of this site. How long is the corridor, how many persons do they meet on their way. Are they armed? Are they of known rank? How many floors? How far down are they going? Rather than asking, she remains silent and concentrated. The doctor's chitchat means little to her. She is eager to know what this is really about and what kind of work is expected of her.

As the elevator rolled slowly into the depths of the Earth. Red retroreflective paint on the ceiling of the shaft indicated "SL1."

"Sublevel 1, Fluidics and Geothermal. One of the benefits of building Alpha Site in a swamp was the abundance of natural gases and water which is used to power all of the integrated systems in the lower levels." The sole features one could see from the elevator was a set of massive blast doors, 20ft*15ft marked with hazard tape, an enormous pink intake pipe that emerged from deeper down the corridor and disappeared into the wall next to the blast door. And a blue pipe with retroreflective yellow paint indicating it was a radiation hazard. The loud hum of machinery was muffled from behind the blast door.

At SL2 the elevator stopped and the corridor opened into a large cavern. The scent of lush greenery and humidity gave the sublevel an rainforest scent. "Sublevel two is the atrium, living quarters, and soon to be home to a movie theater." As above the pink pipe continued deeper into the complex, though a branch broke off at this level. The blue pipe had disappeared into the bedrock.

The well lit room had a great deal of LED lighting and hydroponics, a wealth of foodstuffs appeared to be growing in shelved along the walls, and glass floors showed the flow of purified water pumping slowly through the floor. It was high tech and clearly made to give a sense of "awesome and powerful" while still being understated.

A woman in a well cut suit, red hair, green blouse and pencil skirt wearing a name tag that said Franziska approached boarded, said something to Dr. Connel-Gulbane and produced a set of keys which she relinquished to Justice. "I am Franziska Edwards, CIO and Head of Hospitality. I sign the paychecks and want to welcome you to Alpha Site. You will see me later for housing assignments and we can make better acquaintance there. Trust me, you are in for something special. So I will leave you too it." The two made an unlikely pair, everything about Franziska said business, professional, she was half Justice's size with a kind of rare but timid beauty. Contrasting sharply to Dr. Connel-Gulbane who looked like the poster child for the Daytona 500, redneck.

"Thanks Frannie. See you later." He said and turned to put the keys into the control board as "Frannie" walked back into the atrium disappearing in the beautiful garden.

"Sublevel 3 is restricted, and only accessible by myself, Frannie, and Chief of Security Andrew Lauman. It is where we will spend the majority of our time working. And now if you would please look, and witness the first of many artifacts you will find in this Site." As the elevator came to a stop at a single large opening in the bedrock, with engraved petroglyphs surrounding the entrance. Approximately 150m below the surface of the Earth. Justice directed the group to the sole feature.

Elias’s eyes widen as he sees the stonework around the portal. "How old is this?", he whispers examining from far the finely detailed petroglyphs.

As each sublevel was revealed, Asher's radio was quickly put away as he gaped at the engineering and technology laid before them.

So this is what civilians are capable of now...

Upon seeing the amazing living quarters, Asher's eyes widen and he already starts categorizing in his head the plants being grown that he can see.

Much more comfortable than base...

Once they reach the petroglyphs, Asher nods along with the civilian's awe, using his height to look over people's heads to try and see what lies behind the petroglyphs.

So they are expected to live and work here. What do they need her for? Rodriguez isn't the sciency type, she has her high school diploma - true - but she is neither a technician, nor an archeologist.

"So we're her to protect the government's artefacts?" She includes herself and the other military type. The third, the civilian kinda looked as if he already belonged here.

The acoustics in the chamber were odd, as if the passage ahead was swallowing the sound. The cavewalls, which had obviously been carved showed a level of intent and understanding difficult to achieve with modern architecture and engineering.

Justice shared the gleam of awe in Elias' eyes as he took in the artwork. "How old? We were hoping you could tell us. Though, there are quite similar styles of art in France. We are still trying to find a way to date the stone. Reminds me of Magdalenian cave art, but there are some radical differences."

Justice nodded in affirmative to Veronica. "Protect, obtain, explore, and ecavate. These caves are quite hazardous. Every see an Indiana Jones movie? A lot like that." He grinned at the notion clearly excited to get the work.

A flashlight announced the presence of a person approaching. A man, slightly heavier in build, but so similar in likeness he might have been a twin to Justice. Stepping from the rocks he presented a laminated plastic sheet to Dr. Connel-Gulbane and introduced himself. "Hi, Andrew Lauman, C-Sec. Listen Up I need Donahue, Duclair, Messer, Kowalski, and Rodriguez. Follow me!" He stood for a moment and looked at each person in the face, he already knew them.

Justice reviewed the laminate page and grimaced. "I had intended on giving you all the tour, but that will have to wait.
Please find your accomodations on your own, Franziska will help you."
Pulling his keys from the lift controls Justice broke for the cutaway still regarding the laminate sheet. He looked like he knew where he was going. "Looks like the work won't wait. Lieutenant Rodriguez, and Master Sergeant Donahue, looks like we will be spelunking, Mister Duclair, ever done any cave diving?" He was walking and talking in obvious agitation. Leaning against the entry way he pulled the waterproof marker free and signed the form.

Chief of security Andrew Lauman smirked, with a single huff that was similar to a laugh and opened up a duffel bag full of lighting equipment, head lamps, flashlights and chemical glowlightz indicating they should take them. "There's plenty." He said as if implying the others should feel free. If he was any indication, carrying dozens of the chemical glowlights was a smart choice.

The sound of the elevator, and the murmurs of the excited crowd of 15 returning to the second sublevel was rapidly vanishing as they left the others. Before the others had equipped themselves with lights, the massive freight elevator's sound had disappeared into a quiet rush of air in the cavern.

"No, but I’ve used the climbing wall at the gym before.", Elias says as he keeps pace with Justice. Soon, he finds himself putting on spelunking gear despite himself.
"What’s going on?", he says to Lauman.

"Nothin' perilous. The diggers just found a new chamber, n'took some casualties. Nothin' major. We gonna help 'em though." Andrew had an bright look in his eyes, at a glance anyone knew some mania possessed him, it was in his eyes. Unwavering hazel eye contact, a fierce intensity and ruthless cunning marked on his face, a hard bulbous nose and copper greying beard, which was larger than his own head. "Don'chu worry. I gotcha."

Andrew was 38, but looked in his early 30's is 5'11" 252lbs, built like atlas, there were olympic weightlifters with a less developed physique. His voice a gravelly bass impossibly deep, yet soft spoken. He wore Mjlonir, Thor's hammer, on a gold chain around his neck, and three gold rings on his left hand, as well as a copper and onyx prayer mala, and a silver eagle armring. Carries a Ruger P95a with a massive blue laser integrated into the barrel. The laser was currently off.

Lieutenant Veronica Rodriguez tightens the strap of her gear as the descent begins. The air grows colder the farther they go.

"What kind of casualties are we talking about?" Veronica asks in a steady and professional voice. She isn't one for games and Lauman's manic grin doesn't sit well with her. "Are there any environmental hazards we need to know about? - gas pockets, unstable rock formations? Anything alive down there?"

"A broken leg, n' a bad contusion. Nothin' life threatenin' but they ain't gonna be able to swim out without help." Lauman said as he ushers the group along a left hand path that lead down past the thermocline, it had been getting colder, but the air grew more humid, and warmer now. And the steep grade carried them ever deeper. "There probably are hazards, but nothing I have seen or heard of. No gas or nothin' like that so far either. Keep an eye out for 'gators we're in the Everglades. For now, I am callin' this a'one off situation."
