The fight seemed to be turning very quickly against the goblins' favor. Three of their numbers were down, another one has fled, and they've barely managed to injure the adventurers in return. It was very clear they weren't going to win this fight, and turning around and running away was the more prudent course of action. If only they could make sure they wouldn't be cut down when they tried to flee...
OOC:
Still waiting for the PCs actions for this round. So far, only Will has acted, slicing another goblin down with his sword.
The attack vs Nightshade was premature, because he acts first in the round. @nepets - you have a chance to kill the goblin attacking you before he has the chance to hurt you.

Rolls

Moral Check - (2d6)

(31) = 4

Attack vs Will - (1d20-1)

(11) - 1 = 10

Attack vs Nightshade - (1d20-1)

(19) - 1 = 18

Nightshade soliloquies: "By all that is green and growing, you shell defile the forest no more." He then fires an arrow at the goblin attacking him.
OOC:
I'm using the working assumption that I was about to maintain at least five feet between the goblins and myself as a result of taking a fighting withdrawal on the last turn. In other words, I moved backward 20 feet down the trail. I couldn't find a note of it in the rulebook, but switching weapons in combat usually requires a standard action, so if I have to draw a sword, that's my turn. My in-person group likes to turn the rules-lawyering discussions up to eleven, but I'll try to adapt if this group wants to take a more light-hearted approach to the rules.

Rolls

attack - (1d20+4)

(20) + 4 = 24

damage - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Anton held his side where he'd been slashed as he drew another dagger, "We've got them on the run, don't let them escape!" he then threw the dagger at one of the fleeing goblins.

Rolls

Dagger x5 - Atk. - (1d20+0)

(6) = 6

Dagger x5 - Dmg. - (1d4)

(3) = 3

Not advantage, I think I hit the wrong button.

Brother Yakov grits his teeth, holding back the pain from his wound. It looks like the battle has turned. He starts to swing his warhammer at the last goblin, but then thinks again. Perhaps a live goblin would be more useful than a dead one. "Yield!" he shouts, holding his hammer above his head ready to swing. "Yield or die!"
Dec 23, 2024 5:20 am
The goblin is unable to make sense of the words coming from Yakov's mouth. He had braced for the crushing impact of the hammer, but when it doesn’t come, and Yakov keeps the weapon raised, poised for another swing, a flicker of realization dawns. The goblin sinks to his knees, eyes wide with fear, and begins to beg for his life in a guttural, incomprehensible language.
OOC:
The fight is over. What do you do?
Dec 23, 2024 3:30 pm
First, I will check on the health and well-being of my fellow adventurers. "Yakov, are you okay? Do we need to fall back to the town so you can rest and recuperate?" Well, the party is discussing our next move. I'll take a moment to recover my arrows and search the fallen goblins to see what lootable items they're carrying. Maybe there's some clue that will help us understand this villainy.

"Does soneone have a rope to tie this goblin's hands?" Yakov asks, cursing himself for not bringing any himself.

In response to Nightshade's question: "It's a grievous wound," he says. "I can go on, and I will if we press forward, but I won't survive another injury like this."

Will pulls his javelin from the goblin’s body, and it slumps into the forest floor, its weight no longer supported by the tree trunk. Nightshade, in the meantime, inspects the rest of the bodies. They’re the most pitiful group of goblins he’s ever seen. Thin and nearly emaciated, their ribs jut out from their torsos, their cheeks hollowed, and their skin stretched tight over their bones. Their hair is matted with lice, and their bodies are covered in bruises that never fully healed. Their weapons are crude—either literally pointed sticks, or wooden shafts with sharp stones lashed to them by fraying rope. One of the goblins carries a rusted knife, likely a souvenir from a past raid. Apart from that, their belongings are hardly worth mentioning—unless you count feathers, necklaces of animal teeth, and dried leaves as ‘treasure.’

Yakov does manage to secure some rope and binds the last surviving goblin. The creature glances over its shoulder repeatedly, searching for an escape, but once fully tied, it abandons any hope of fleeing. Instead, it falls to the ground, groveling before Yakov, its dry, parched lips pressing against his feet in a desperate display of submission.

Once the goblin is tied up, Yakov does his best to staunch the bleeding and bind his wound.

"Do any if you speak goblin?" Yakov asks the group? "I had hoped we could get information from this one, but it didn't occur to me that he didn't speak the common tongue.

"If we can't get information in the field, we could take him back to town. Someome there might be able to communicate with him. But then we give up on the fresh trail."
Yakov looks at the blood on his hands, most of it his own. We're it not for his calling and his promises to the farmer, he'd definitely turn back now.

"On one hand that man's pigs are not long for this world given the emaciated state of that goblin" Anton said pointing a dagger at the goblins ribs. "On the other hand, neither are we if we are ambushed by goblins again."

Anton looked back to town, "I was also wounded and could use some rest, or does anyone know any restorative magics?"
Dec 23, 2024 8:54 pm
Will cuts off a length of rope and helps bind the goblin prisoner.
I do not speak goblin, sadly. Maybe try signing with him?
Dec 24, 2024 2:23 am
Since we have two injured adventurers, I think our best option is to return to town. Maybe there'll be someone in the town who can speak goblin, and we can interrogate the prisoner. It looks like our options for healing are a full day's rest for 1d3 or finding a healer who can cast cure light wounds. One additional question is, do we want to carry the goblin corpses back and try to collect the bounty?

The party trudged back along the forest path. The road to Farmer Pyotor's farm seemed longer than it should have been, and from there, it would be another couple of hours before they reached Threshold. The journey felt even more drawn out with the captured goblin in tow, forced to walk alongside them, its hands bound tightly. The sun was beginning to dip lower, casting long shadows over the road as they made their way heading south along the Windrush river.

As they neared the farmlands to the west of the town, familiar voices drifted on the wind. Hunter and Natasha, returning from a similar goblin hunt, were chatting and laughing as they made their way back to Threshold.

"Man, I would’ve been sooooooo embarrassed had I been killed by that goblin" Hunter said with a chuckle, his arm wrapped in a bandages. Several goblin bodies, their forms draped over the backs of their mules, swayed with the movement of the animals.

Natasha raised an eyebrow as she pointed out dryly: "You wouldn’t be alive to be embarrassed about it"
Dec 25, 2024 8:04 am
Hunter’s face flushed a bright shade of red. It took him a moment to recover, but when he did, he grinned sheepishly. "Right you are. I meant, I would be embarrassed once I reached the Crystal Halls. Telling everyone how I got done in by a goblin."

As the two adventurers continued down the road, they finally noticed the party up ahead. Hunter gave a quick wave, ready to shout a farewell, but his greeting turned into a look of utter shock when he caught sight of the party's prize: a live goblin, tied up and stumbling behind them.

"The Limbo is that? Is that…a LIVE goblin?!" Hunter’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets in disbelief. He stopped in his tracks, staring at the bound creature. "What are you planning to do with that bugger? It’ll stab you in the back the first chance it gets!"
Dec 25, 2024 2:43 pm
The feeling was that we’d find a translator and interrogate the creature for important information. Who in your wonderful town speaks Goblin, good sir?
Dec 25, 2024 3:09 pm
"It's a gob-lin!" Hunter said, as if Will hasn't noticed "What information could it possibly have? They're all liars, thieves and murderers" the big man stepped sideways, to check whether any of them suffered serious head injury "They'll never let you take it inside Threshold. Not in a million years!!! Better put it out of its misery now. Save you a whole lot of trouble"
