[Open] Bluebeard: The Sunless Sea

The Sunless Sea. No-one knows where it came from, and why, but it did. It overflowed the cities, the farms, the fields, and soon only the mountaintops were land. And now, the islands that were mountaintops are the place where people live, or more precisely, survive. A lot of people say it's not living, just existing.

Some braver or unusually follish people decided to travel the Sunless Sea. That is a great risk, there are strange phenomena and strange creatures everywhere, and lots of ships disappear. However, this is the only means of news and goods spreading, so those that can survive the journey are welcome at the place where they arrive. Food, materials, skilled craftsmen can only arrive this way, so folks are always helpful with adventurous travelers.

And, a few of these people, the PCs, have stumbled upon something weird even in this world: a ship that has a personality, has goals, talks, pouts, has emotions and people skills. Also, very good at navigation and maneuvering, which is very handy. It calls itself Bluebeard. It considers itself the captain, and the crew as land-crew and healers for its 'body'.

Once you get that kind of equipment, you'll be able to assist Bluebeard in navigation and maneuvering, but at the beginning, you are maintenance and land crew.

I don't have a plot in mind. You can have character goals, and pursue them. If the players can agree on a course of action in a relatively short time, Bluebeard will do that (go where the team wants it to go). If not, I'll make a decision as Bluebeard and it'll take you somewhere.

Obviously, I'll need characters who are desperate or uncaring or whatever enough to stick with Bluebeard and its weirdness.

SWADE - Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
I'll be using Ironsworn oracles, Mythic GME tables and Apprentice Decks a lot, in addition to my imagination.

I'm looking for four players. Each player can have up to two characters, the ship can accomodate that many.

This is not set in the same setting as the Sunless Sea game, I'm guessing? If not, I might consider joining... which Savage Worlds handbook will you be using?

Hi,

No, it's a homebrew world, steampunk and takes its aesthetics from Sunless Sea, but it's our own setting.

SWADE is my version.

not sure what you require for an application other than interest... which I have lots of... have been watching One Piece anime for 100+ episodes and have a lot of inspiration for creating a character with pirate overtones/leanings... Have company showing up soon so no time to flesh something out now but can this evening.

I like the concept and is interested.
What is the sunless sea? Water? Clouds? What happens if one descends the mountains where people now lives?

Even if the concept reminds me of Lady Blackbird the steampunk rpg

This is the Sunless Sea, the main inspiration for this game.

Did the sun disappear or something, for it to be called the *sunless* sea?
Dec 28, 2024 4:06 pm
Yeah, it did. There's a strange pattern in the otherwise dark sky, a vague texture as if it was alive.

Will the campaign involve any gods or demons?
Dec 28, 2024 6:20 pm
Only magic and weird science are in it, so people don't get abilities from such patrons. But some may think and say they are.

And there will be weird creatures, which people may also call demons.

I'm not planning on involving gods/angels/demons directly.

May I ask why you ask?

OOC:
May I ask why you ask?
Because I prefer to avoid such things for religious reasons (Christian).

I'm interested in playing. I want to ask for more details about the setting, such as a little history, factions, country names if "countries" still exist, what cultures are there and what real-life cultures inspire them, maybe some place names... I'm not asking for exhaustive lists, just some info so I can come up with a character concept.

Oh, and for the same reason, what are Bluebeard's views on piracy? I would prefer to play a character that desires to hunt pirates rather than one that engages in piracy, but if the idea is being pirates, I can work with that too.

I'm still interested, but I am struggeling to understand the world you are setting up. Is there some clouds that have covered the earth and just some some mountains that are sticking up?
I get that the world before with it cities and fields are under the clouds (or what ever have covered them)

If I understood, the Sunless Sea is salt water, being sunless due to a darkened sky, and the setting has no connection to the Lady Blackbird one. Moldy, is the ship Bluebird or Bluebeard? You have written it both ways in this tread...

I'm going to go ahead and state my interest, but it is pending on more info on the setting, as Runekyndig and Gentleman requested.

Definitely Bluebeard. I'm going to correct it soon.

The Sunless Sea is water, a real sea, which somehow covered this world. It's not necessarily salty, but it isn't drinkable as it is. Distillation works, and there's regular rain which is still fresh water and compatible with human physiology.

Steam power, basic electricity and weird science are part of life, and generally speaking, the Revolution Age is the default for everyone. However, this refers to all cultures, so players can be Scandinavian in origin and familiar with stream + electricity + weird science. There are no countries left. The islands are so disparate, and travel is so infrequent between clusters, that any kind of military force is very much local.

I don't want to exactly copy place names (though might do with some), but they are going to be like the ones in the wiki. Players can choose any nation on Earth as their base culture, and be whatever they want. A tribal African, steampowered Chinese monk, Japanese weird scientist, Portugese sailor who lost their ship, and so on.

Bluebeard has no problem with piracy, but I won't force it. It's definitely an option for the players as a team.

There is one thing I'd like to state clearly now -- after re-watching the Steam promo video -- that cannibalism is not going to be part of the game. That's something I'm not ok with, and I suppose it isn't allowed by site policy either.

Thank you for the clarification.
So to understand the world we will be sailing in:
1. Take our known earth as a basis
2. Raise the water level
3. Give it thick cloud cover so sunlight doesn't reach the sea level, but it is still warm enough so we are not looking at a nuclear winter situation
4. Magic is real and known
5. There are no biblical creatures like angels or devils, but Lovecraftian creatures dwell in the deep
6. We will be sailing on the sentient ship Bluebeard
7. Steampunk tech level

Is this roughly what we are looking at?

Very concise summary.

discover lost cities
consort with pirates
lose your mind
realize things mortals were not meant to know
support or thwart power groups
make it back alive

Will you/can we make use of the Steamscapes books? (There's more than the one I linked).
Dec 30, 2024 7:22 pm
In general, yes, but I would like details about what options you use, because I don't have these books.
Dec 30, 2024 9:42 pm
It seems those books are currently available for free, for some reason. In order to download them you would need to make a DriveThruRPG account, which is free and allows you to download free stuff for free, and buy the paid stuff if you have money and interest.
