Chapter 3: High Noon on Walston

Jan 4, 2025 7:09 pm
The final hour of the jump crackled with tension. Four weeks ago, Fallon and Seally had shared a chilling vision aboard the Florian ship: Salvor Dreks, the vile pirate who once claimed the Wayward Wind as his own, was coming back to Walston to take "his" ship - the Wayward Wind, a cutting-edge Harrier-class starship with one of the fastest manoeuvre drives in the Third Imperium. This storied vessel was never really his—it had been stolen from Seally’s noble house, and Dreks’ depraved actions had tarnished the ship's name. Reclaiming the ship’s honour was Seally’s mission, and her handpicked crew had proven to be a resourceful team.
[ +- ] The Crew!
Yet, Dreks and his ruthless gang seemed to haunt the ship’s every move. As long as the pirate remained at large, the Wayward Wind could never escape its shadowed past. Justice for Dreks was not just a goal—it was a necessity. And now, Dreks was threatening Walston, a backwater planet where the crew had made many friends, and were celebrated as heroes.
[ +- ] Salvor Dreks
The crew had wasted no time after receiving the ominous vision. Using the proceeds from selling data on their extraordinary encounter with the elusive Alo’hei, they readied the Wayward Wind for battle. Microfractures in the hull were sealed, and a gleaming new pulse laser turret bristled from the ship’s dorsal hardpoint.

Their ranks were bolstered, too, by three Florian warriors—One, Four, and Nine—known as Feskals. Towering figures from a distant world, the Feskals were bred for servitude but had won their freedom aboard the Wayward Wind. Now, they lived as free men, their spartan camp nestled in the cargo hold as they dreamed of a world where they could explore their humanity in peace.
[ +- ] Feskal Warriors
The crew gathered in the ship's lounge, the weight of their mission heavy in the air. Ahead lay the Walston system, and with it, the chance to confront Dreks once and for all. Were they ready to face a band of hardened pirates and murderers? Analyzing the mood, Goldie decides to be helpful and chooses a song from their ancient Earth music repository. Zuzu's ears perk up as the song begins to play.

OOC:
Welcome back to the Wayward Wind, everyone! We're starting just before we arrive in the Walston system, right before the action begins. Let's role-play a bit to get back into character before we start blasting space pirates. What have your characters been up to, and how are they feeling and what are they doing before entering potentially hostile space?
Jan 4, 2025 10:19 pm
Seally's eyes check the navigation beacons and compare them with her own astrogation plots with her mobile comm. She's checked them twice, already, and about to start a third she instead pushes the device to the side and lifts her drink, gripping it with both hands. "Travel takes so long but when we get there we'll wish we had more time to prepare." She slowly rotates the drink in her hands.

They had spent too much cred on liquor station but somehow that just made it feel more like home. She was used to certain luxuries universally offered at the expense of efficiency and conservative management of resources. She felt her companions felt the same way. Certainly Fallon must.

"Think they remember us at that beach?" She snickers remembering the bold way they had talked themselves into committing what must have been a violation of a half dozen of Walston's decency laws.
Jan 4, 2025 11:07 pm
"Hey now don't get me started on that beach, ladies. Piloting a ship is a great responsibility. No distractions please," he says, fighting a smile.

"Your coordinates are good, Seally. Everything jives with what I'm seeing here." Zuni's brow tightens though as he scans his readouts. "The trajectories all line up. I just wish we weren't on a course to meet Dreks and his thugs too."

"They won’t know what hit them!" Alerio starts up, rubbing sweat from her brow.

She wipes her hands and then lets herself fall into her chair with a thud!

"Last time they saw this bird, well… it didn’t have some of the hardware it has now! They’ll be expecting a pissing contest and we’ll shoot them out of the sky!" she sneers, relishing the idea of ridding themselves and Walston of this gang.
Jan 5, 2025 4:34 pm
"True. That pulse laser is kick-ass. But don't underestimate the bastard. He probably has an idea we would have made improvements on The Wayward Wind."
Jan 5, 2025 6:33 pm
"News travels slow, so even if he has paid informants at the station, maybe he hasn't heard about the upgrades yet. Yet, so we don't have all the time in the world."

She looks fondly at Zuzu. "Especially chief woofer Zuzu!"

Goldie
Goldie's calm, pleasant voice chimes in through comms. "It is prudent to review combat roles and battle stations for each crew member, in the event of an armed confrontation in space."

"Dame Seally, you are the Captain of the Wayward Wind and have elected to route Sensors Operations to your command chair on the bridge."

"Alerio, you are the ship's Engineer and will be stationed on the first deck for damage control. In addition, you will be operating the Wayward Wind's countermeasures suite for conducting Electronic Warfare, also located on first deck."

"Fallon, you are the Wayward Wind's only qualified Gunner and acting Medical Officer. You have assigned to the bridge to operate the Missile Turret and Pulse Laser Turret from weapon systems console."

"Khazuni, you are the Wayward Wind's Pilot and will be stationed on the bridge, at the helm."

"One, Four, and Nine are assigned to the role of Marines to conduct boarding actions, and defend against such. They are stationed on the first deck, near the main airlock."

"I have updated Zuzu's roll to Chief Woofer, who is no doubt in charge of crew morale and belly rubs. Where would you like to station Chief Woofer Zuzu during combat?"

"Lastly, it is customary for personel to don vacc suits when called to their battle stations, in the event of hull breach and decompression, and as defense against directed radiation weapons."
OOC:
The underlined roles have specific jobs in space combat! I decided to split the Sensor Operator between Captain and Engineer because we only have 4 players and it gives those players a bit more action. If Alerio gets called away to fix damage, Seally might need to run down to the first deck to operate the Countermeasures Suite.

Weapons are primed and ready to blast. Like me after this is over with, I hope," she grins, dusting her hands theatrically since nothing she did had gotten her hands dirty. "And did I hear Zuzu got a promotion? I mean, well earned and all, but let's not forget the rest of us, yeah? The title 'Chief Master Blaster' has a nice ring to it, dontcha think? Anyway, how long till we arrive?"
Jan 6, 2025 3:10 pm
"Hear that Zuzu? You've been promoted. Give me a high five!" Zuni had somehow managed to train the dog to do that trick whenever he had the opportunity.

"We should station Zuzu in a secure, confined space for his protection during combat. Some kind of harness apparatus we could probably jury-rig. Any ideas Goldie?"

Zuni chuckles at Fallon. "I'd be happy to address you as Chief Master Blaster if it will make you happy."
Jan 6, 2025 5:41 pm
Seally laughs that Goldie took her seriously although in retrospect isn't surprised. "Let's make sure Zuzu has access to a comm unit so his woofs can be broadcast to any dastardly miscreants and malcontents we come across!"

She drops finger guns to Fallon and nods with a big smile at her title.
Jan 7, 2025 12:55 am
At that moment, the Wayward Wind lurches, the sound of the bonded superdense hull bending and flexing under force. The artificial gravity mostly compensates to dampen the effect, but you still fill the shudders through the ship.

Goldie
Goldie's calmly explains "I have traced the source of this disturbance to the Jump Drive. The terminus of jump space is currently being calculated, but the jump field is destabilizing prematurely."

Ever since you've taken possession of the Wayward Wind, the Jump Drive has been a little ... wayward. But fixing it has always been a lower priority. If you exit early from jump space, the carefully calculated terminus point might not materialize where Seally would have plotted it. Rather than a safe location, you might end up too deep inside a gravity well and be sucked into a star, or far outside the system, requiring days of travel to reach Walston.
Jan 7, 2025 3:14 am
"Damn! I knew we should have fixed that Jump Drive. Remind me again why we didn't fix it?" Zuni fights with the ship, trying to stabilize it.

"We're letting her live up to her name right now. Any damage to report, Alerio?"
Jan 7, 2025 6:23 am
OOC:
Alerio can get a damage report from a console to confirm that there has been no structural damage to the ship. If she wants, she can head down to the J-Drive to run diagnostics, and try to stabilize the jump field to avoid a bad re-entry into normal space.

To do this, Alerio can make an Engineering: J-Drive check (INT or EDU). Roll 2d6 and add your Engineering: J-Drive skill and your choice of INT or EDU modifier, and try to get an 8 or higher.
Jan 7, 2025 6:30 am
"Do we have a vacc su…" Alerio says, joining in the banter over Zuzu before she’s thrown a little off balance by all the shuddering the ship is undergoing.

She groans, and curses as the fault is found to be in the J-Drive.

"Chief J-Drive Pummeler, reporting for duty!" she says, harkening back to all her threats to batter the damned thing with a wrench at any and all opportunities.

"I’ll go take a look!" she says with a sigh, before taking off down the Wayward Wind.
OOC:
Both stats are zero, but J-Drive is 1!

Looking at Zuni, We agreed the hull was the priority since it's the most integral part keeping us fleshy and supple meatbags from becoming hardened ice popsicles in the vastness of space. But the J-Drive is definitely next on the list for repairs. Plus I shudder to think how expensive it will be if a major problem is found. Engines aren't usually the cheapest parts of the ship."

Fallon bends down to give Zuzu some pets. "Comms for the pup sounds like a wonderful idea."
Jan 7, 2025 7:28 pm
"I know Fallon. I wish we didn't have to prioritize that way, and who you calling a meatbag? I take pride in my supple, lithe body, you know."

Secretly, Zuni was a little concerned about what problems might be uncovered, but he figured giving voice to those concerns might be tempting fate.

"Come in suit up, play it safe ladies."

She hits the comm. "One, Four, Nine, put on enviro suits right away. Just in case things get a little dicey."

She grabs one from the bridge locker and begins to yank it on.

Seally Llewyn says:
She hits the comm. "One, Four, Nine, put on enviro suits right away. Just in case things get a little dicey."
The Feskals respond immediately in unison: "Yes, Dame Seally." It had taken some amount of convincing to get them to stop referring to the crew as "Keepers of The Word" and "Witnesses of the Children."

Adapting to life outside their indentured servitude to the Barnai Florians was slowly taking shape. Although they hung onto their individual number, they had ditched their unit code and had taken to calling themselves the "Heretic Squad" after a comment that Seally had made when they first met you. Once a day, you might catch a glimmer of their beautiful song, a prayer to the Alo'hei, a privlidge that precious few citizens of the Third Imperium have ever experienced.

Alerio makes her way down to first deck, where the J-Drive is located. She passes the Heretic Squad as they are donning vacc suits, and enters the J-Drive chamber.

https://i.imgur.com/ZI8FES1.png

Giving it a good thwack with her spanner, Alerio hears the rattle of a loose power coupling. Opening up the access panel reveals a burnt out coupling - a grave danger. It takes a tense 20 minutes, but she manages to hot-swap it while the J-Drive is still formulating the Jump field, setting up a triple bypass circuit to accomplish the task.
OOC:
Congrats, Alerio, you succeed, though barely!
Now that the J-drive is stable, the Jump field begins safely collapsing. As per Imperial custom, the interior lights across the ship are dimmed almost to black*. You make your final preparations, such as wiring Zuzu's collar for comms, and wait as the Wayward Wind enter normal space. Before the shutters** on your windows can be raised, your comms station lights up: a Priority/1 distress signal.

"This is the Free Trader Beowulf, calling anyone… Mayday, Mayday… We are under attack!"
* - A leftover practice from ancient star mariners, from the days when starships needed to conserve every joule of energy while passing in or out of Jump space. No longer necessary, but a good luck charm practised by all space-fearing crews across the Imperium.

** - you always close shutters on Starship windows when entering Jump space, because looking into Jump space drives sophonts mad.

Fallon, now wearing her vacc suit as well, throws up her hands in disbelief. Oh come on! Really? I had just hyped myself up for this showdown with Dreks! I'm going to get fight-or-flight blue balls! Blue adrenal glands! Shit...Should we answer it?" She looks to Seally who is their de facto leader.

Seally is all business over the comm with her partners. "Zuni, plot an intercept course but don't engage yet. Fallon, Alerio, Zuni we decide this together. I vote we go. Report."
Jan 8, 2025 4:20 pm
The windows shutters raise, letting in natural light into the Wayward Wind for the first time in a week. You've entered normal space quite close to Walston, no doubt a testament to Alerio's quick J-Drive repairs, the system's reddish star cresting behind it.

Your advanced sensor suite begins pulling in data as the distress call continues: "We are under attack ... main drive is gone ... turret number one not responding ... losing cabin pressure fast ... calling anyone ... please help ... this is Free Trader Beowulf ... mayday!"

You get a visual of the Beowulf listing in Walston's orbit, confirming their dire situation.

Then, sensors pick up the cause of the Beowulf's distress. A 400 dTon* Nishemani corsair is bearing down on her. It bristles with weapons, including 2 pulse laser triple turrets and a triple missile turret.

The Nishemani-class corsair's transponder indicates it is of Sword World origin, and designated Calibandr, which sparks a memory from weeks ago.

"Oh, shit on multiple levels."

Zuni plots the intercept course and blows through his lips. "Remember The Drunken Droid on Elixabeth?"
Jan 9, 2025 1:20 am
Seally shivers. On the comms she says, "A narrow window of victory only. If we strike, we must hit it hard and fast, and hope to do enough damage that it cannot fight back effectively."

She puts her hand on Zuni's shoulder. "Are you up for this, my friend?"
Jan 9, 2025 1:39 am
"I am up for this, but is The Wayward Wind? I mean their ship is loaded! And they hate us. If we don't sneak in and kill them dead, we will be dead. You aren't kidding about a narrow window. It's razor thin."

Zuni shudders at what could lie ahead if they fail.

"Sword Worlders!" she says, through gritted teeth. She gets ready to move to her station.

"I like those odds!" she says, about the razor thin margin they were working with! "Lets let em have it!!"
Jan 9, 2025 7:55 am
"Calibandr? Wasn't that the name of that smug Sword Worlder shit we met a few weeks ago? Was basically fellating Dreks and his battle prowess? Ugh I did not expect to run into them again. I'm in, but so help me if I die during this I will haunt any of you survivors."
Jan 9, 2025 4:08 pm
"Yes, the very same. I doubt they will show mercy."

Zuni would have made some kind of wise-ass remark in response to Fallon's surprising potty mouth remark, but they were probably a few seconds away from dying.
Jan 9, 2025 11:36 pm
Goldie puts the transmission from the Calibrandr on the main view screen. The image flickered to life, and before you sat the captain of the Calibrandr, a grotesque amalgamation of man and machine. Tubes pulsed rhythmically, carrying fluids through his ravaged body, while gears hissed and clicked in a discordant symphony of life sustained by cold, unfeeling technology.

But it was his face that commanded your gaze—a grim Sword Worlder funeral mask, its hollow eyes staring back with an eerie, unblinking intensity. The mask’s polished surface gleamed like bone, and its carved features, both austere and cruel, seemed to sneer at you from across the void.

https://i.imgur.com/AFu7F0A.jpeg

"The Wayward Wind..." intoned the captain, his voice a resonant blend of flesh and machine, twisted with malice. "Ah, the cowards who dared strike me down — shot me through the chest and cast me to rot upon cursed Elixabeth. Did you think death would claim me so easily? Nay, I rose, my veins aflame with vengeance, my blade hungering for the taste of your blood!"

His eyes burned like twin embers as he stepped forward, the dim light gleaming off his jagged armor.

"Dreks foretold your return, to this insignificant speck of sand, though even he could not predict such pitiful haste. And lo, you come stumbling into the jaws of ruin ere the slaughter has truly begun. How considerate of you... to present yourselves for the reckoning."
Jan 10, 2025 12:32 am
"What did I tell you ladies?" Zuni hisses under his breath.

"Were fucked. If we try to run, we're dead. If we stay, we're fucked. Ideas?
Jan 10, 2025 12:34 am
In response, she smiles at Zuni, but says to the man on the screen, "Hi, good to see you! I see our gunshot hasn't improved your looks. Hold on right there while we finish wrapping your present."

She muted the main comm. On a side channel, she informs the crew, "Prepare for combat. Fallon, break their defenses open. Alerio, get ready with those extinguishers. Heretic Squad, prepare to repel boarders. And Zuni? Let's get close enough for missiles."

Secretly, she's terrified. They've been in combat before but the size of that thing! And Sword Worlders, they seem like they know what they're doing.

On Bridge of the Calibrandr

The Sword Worlder pilot of the Calibrandr wrenched the controls, skillfully bringing the hulking corsair around to bear. But his confidence faltered as his quarry darted through the void with impossible grace. The Wayward Wind danced like a phantom!

"By the stars, but she’s fast!" the young warrior bellowed, his voice tinged with disbelief, even as the ship's klaxons blared a deafening call to battlestations.

"Fast?" The captain’s voice thundered over the din, his fury sharp enough to cut steel. "Of course she’s fast! That’s Drek’s ship! The scourge of District 268!" He rose from his command chair, a twisted figure radiating venomous authority. "But fear not!" he snarled, his words dripping with contempt. "We outgun them three to one! And their crew? Nothing but a pack of craven women!"

The pilot’s hands tightened on the controls as he swallowed hard, the tension in the air thicker than the smoke of distant battles. The Calibrandr surged forward, engines screaming in pursuit, but doubt lingered like a shadow in the pilot’s mind.

On the Bridge of the Beowulf
Lights flared red across every console, the wail of alarms cutting through the chaos as the ship disintegrated around them. Captain Falkirk floated in zero gravity, propelling himself grimly down the darkened lift shaft, his hand clenched tight around his lucky rabbit’s foot. His jaw was set, his breaths sharp and measured. Engineering was his destination, on his way to help the chief to jump-start the failing J-Drive. His odds were dwindling fast, but he couldn't give up.

Through the static-laden comms, he heard their officer’s voice repeating the distress signal like a grim mantra. "Mayday... mayday... this is Free Trader Beowulf..." Falkrik cursed under his breath, his thoughts a storm. Damn it all, I should’ve stayed retired.

The ship shuddered under a new barrage of pulse laser fire, but then, as abruptly as it began, the onslaught stopped. The silence that followed was deafening, and far more sinister. Falkirk froze mid-motion, dread clawing up his spine. They’re boarding us, the thought came, cold and sharp. His grip tightened on the edge of the lift. Was it better to meet death in the cold, indifferent vacuum of space when the reactor went critical? Or to endure the slow agony of a Trexalon slave mine?

His hand drifted to his sidearm, fingers brushing the snub pistol in its holster. The weight of the weapon was a bitter comfort as he considered saving that last bullet.

Then, the intercom crackled to life, and a new voice cut through the darkness.

"Captain!" the sensor operator’s tone was sharp, urgent. "Another ship has arrived! The pirates—they’re turning away to face it!"

Falkirk paused, his breath catching. His grip on the rabbit’s foot eased slightly as a glimmer of hope sparked in his chest. Maybe, just maybe, the old spacer wasn’t out of luck after all.

Round 1
INITIATIVE ORDER:

1. Wayward Wind
2. Calbrandr
3. Beowulf

Manoeuvre Step > Attack Step > Actions Step
Pilots: Spend thrust points to increase or decrease range between ships, aid gunners of laser turrets, or dock with an adjacent enemy. Unused thrust points can be reserved later for evasive manoeuvres. Zuni can spend up to 6 thrust points.

Currently, the Wayward Wind is 30 thrust points from the Calibrandr and 35 from the Beowulf.

Captains: [Optional!] If you wish to take charge and guide your crew, make a Leadership (SOC) check. The effect indicates the number of Boons you can hand during this round. If the effective is negative, however, these will instead be Banes that the enemy can apply to your rolls!

Goldie brings up a concise tactical analysis for Zuni in the holographic controls as he takes the reins of the lightning-fast starship.
OOC:
You're currently 30 thrust away. If both the Calibrandr and the Wayward Wind move at their maximum speed, you'll be 21 thrust apart, so no matter what, lasers will still be out of range when we get to the Attack Step. Missiles fired this round will still take 2-3 rounds to reach their targets. So. there is not much use for evasive actions or aid gunners this round, and you can push the engines as hard as you need.
Jan 10, 2025 6:16 pm
OOC:
Do the Calibandr's guns have the same maximum range as ours?

What should our tactic be given that they outgun us 3 to 1? Thoughts from the crew?

Len

Jan 10, 2025 10:36 pm
OOC:
Yes, the Calibrandr's guns have the same range.

Although they have more firepower, the Wayward Wind has more potential to stack bonuses for accuracy. For example, getting a sensor lock is pretty easy for your more advanced ship, but much harder for them. Plus, you can break that lock pretty easily with your sweet countermeasures suite.

If you hang back, you can fling missiles at each other without worrying about pulse lasers, but the further away you are, the longer it takes for those missiles to hit, and the more chances the enemy has to disable them. The Wayward Wind can disable missiles pretty handily, and you only have 12 missiles so it's wise to make them count.

Seally's plan is solid.

Engineer & Countermeasures: Since nothing is on fire, Alerio has nothing to fix. From the Countermeasures suite, she can either jam communications so the Calibrandr can't send messages, break / prevent sensor locks to make it harder for the Calibrandr to hit you, or disable incoming missiles. Since no missiles have been detected yet, you can only do either 1 or 2.

Alerio gets a +6 to either action (in addtion to skill bonuses) because of the state-of-the-art countermeasures suite that is at your disposal.

Meanwhile, the comm crackled to life, and every pair of eyes on the Calbrandr's bridge snapped to the screen. Slowly, the shadowed figure of Salvor Dreks emerged, his presence more oppressive than the static-filled silence preceding him. His voice cut through the tension, smooth yet sharp, like a blade drawn in the dark.

"Excellent news," he purred, the faintest hint of menace curling at the edge of his words. His gaze locked onto the Sword World captain, cold and unrelenting. "Remember," he continued, leaning forward as if to reach through the screen itself, "I want my ship intact. No disintegration."

The final word came like a dagger, each syllable deliberately placed, echoing with a quiet promise of consequences should his command be ignored. The room seemed to hold its breath as Dreks' image lingered, a chilling reminder of the power he wielded—and the dread he inspired.

On the Beowulf, chaos reigned as the crew fought to wrench their ship back from the brink. Sparks flew from overloaded consoles, and the acrid tang of burning circuits thickened the air. Frantic voices called out statuses and failures, but one command echoed above all else: Get the jump drive online. It was their only shot at escaping the relentless barrage of the Calibrandr's triple pulse lasers and missile turrets that had chewed up their hull.

A sudden, high-pitched whine filled the bridge, rising like a prayer answered. The J-Drive was back online. For a fleeting moment, the crew erupted in cheers, relief breaking through their terror. But the celebration was short-lived.

"Life support’s still down!" someone shouted, their voice cracking with desperation. The room fell deathly silent as the grim truth settled over them. Without life support, they'd suffocate mid-jump.

Sweat dripped from every brow as power levels flickered on the main display. Not enough for both systems. A grim choice loomed over them like the Calibrandr itself.

"Not out of the water yet," the captain growled, wiping the sweat from his brow as he floated in zero-g in the engine room. "And we’re damn close to drowning."

The Calibrandr barrels forward as the captain rises to address his ship. His sharp gaze swept over the crew, each one frozen under the weight of his presence. "Listen up!" he barked, his voice a whip crack that demanded absolute attention. "The Wayward Wind thinks they can outrun us, outsmart us, and leave us licking our wounds in their wake. His lips curled into a predatory grin, a dark fire flickering in his eyes. "I don't care what Dreks says! I don’t want their surrender. I don’t want their retreat. I want their complete and utter annihilation. This isn’t just a mission; it’s a reckoning. They’ve made their choice, and now, they’ll pay the price—every last one of them."

He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a chilling growl. "Push harder. Work faster. Bleed if you have to. The Calibrandr will be their end, and I will hear them scream before the void swallows their wreckage. Are you with me?"

The crew's efforts have managed to allow the Wayward Wind to go toe-to-toe with the more heavily armed corsair. Of course, having one of the most advanced starships on the frontier in their hands doesn't hurt.

As the ships hurtle towards each other, they each release another volley of missiles - the Calibrandr firing three for every one that the Wayward Wind fires, but what the Wayward Wind lacked in quantity it made up in accuracy. If only it could get a salvo passed their defences!

The Calibrandr’s sensor operator stiffened, their voice cutting through the tense hum of the bridge. "Captain! The Beowulf - it’s got a sensor lock on us!"

The bridge fell silent for a heartbeat before the captain’s laughter filled the corsair's bridge, sharp and manic. It echoed across the room, sending a chill down even the most hardened crew members' spines. "Those fleas dare interfere?" he bellowed, rising to his full height. His eyes burned with fury beneath his death mask as he thrust a finger toward the viewport. "Turn us about! We’ll put an end to their meddling once and for all!"

The crew scrambled to obey, the tension thick as the ship groaned into motion. The captain’s laughter died into a low growl, his gaze fixed on the distant stars where his enemies lurked. He understood the danger - two ships closing in, the odds turning against him. But the thought of revenge ignited a fire in his chest, more potent than fear or reason. Salvage be damned; nothing would stand between him and the destruction of the Wayward Wind.

"Prepare the weapons," he barked, his voice cold and ruthless. "Today, we bury them all!"

Calibrandr
The Calibrandr shudders as fire rips through its spine. Once a predator of the void, she now drifts wounded, its weapons mangled beyond recognition. The Wayward Wind’s missile strike has struck true.

He stands rigid at the center of the bridge, his eyes flickering with raw, seething fury from behind his death mask. His remaining organic hand clenches into a trembling fist, while the steel fingers of the other curl against his palm, servo motors whining with the force of his rage. His revenge was so close—he had them, helpless before his ship's mighty guns. And now, those guns are gone.

The crew is silent, too afraid to speak, too afraid to acknowledge the truth pressing down on them like a weight: they must flee. The captain does not give the order right away. His breathing is harsh, mechanical, like the damaged ship itself. He turns toward the main viewscreen, where the Wayward Wind is on a direct intercept course.

His fury roils through the ship like a living thing. The Calibrandr feels it, in the way his cybernetic implants interface with its systems, feeding his thoughts directly into its wounded circuits. If there were even a single functioning weapon left, the ship knows he would fire it, consequences be damned. But there is nothing. No missiles. No laser cannons. Only the broken husk of a warship bleeding sparks into the void.

A crew member dares to speak. "Sir, we need to withdraw before they..."

The captain turns on them so quickly that they shrink back, eyes wide. His voice is a growl, each syllable edged with distortion from his damaged vocal modulator. "I know that."

The order comes, spat like venom: "Get us out of here."

This is not over. He will see them broken. He will see them burn. And the Calibrandr will carry his vengeance until the stars themselves are nothing but cinders...

"Glad we pulled through! Should we call up the Beowulf and invite them for cocktails?" she adds. They needed the assist, but that was hidden within all the celebratory chatter!
Feb 5, 2025 1:15 am
Seally laughs, the tension released. "They're still hanging on by a razors edge. Let's see if we can help them stabilize."

She first signals Alerio. "Alerio, everything okay down there? I want to offer the Beowulf our, your, assistance."

Zuni practically dances in his chair when the corsair is blown to smithereens.

"Damn, we did it! Now let's go save the Beowolf."

"All good down here! I didn’t have much to do… thankfully!" she says, and means it. That doesn’t mean the next few hours wouldn’t be hectic.

They were a long way from being done!

Captain Falkirk’s weathered voice crackles over the radio - audio only. Even though he's a gritty old spacer who’s seen his share of close calls, the sound of relief is clear. "Wayward Wind, I’ll be damned. Your plan actually worked. That was some damn fine flying and sharp shooting. We owe you, no question. If you're still feeling generous and you’ve got an extra engineer or a medic to spare, we could sure use the help. Life support’s shot, so if you’re coming aboard, bring vacc suits."

Salvor Dreks
You also see there is a transmission incoming from the Walston starport. Salvor Dreks appears on your screen.
The comm crackles to life, and a voice slithers through the speakers like oil over rusted metal.

"At last, we speak face to face. I am Salvor Dreks, rightful captain of the fine vessel you so rudely stole from me. I was worried I’d have to hunt you across the stars, but instead, you’ve saved me the trouble by bringing my ship right back to me."

A low, amused chuckle drifts through the transmission, full of malice.

"I must say, you handled the Calibrandr well. Hardly a scratch on my ship. That’s good. Returning my property to me in better shape than I left it does put me in a rare good mood. Let’s talk business, shall we?"

The amusement vanishes, his voice turning cold, sharp as a blade.

"You see, I have the Walston starport under my thumb right now, along with the shitty little town beside it. Good, hardworking folk, scared and waiting. I told them you'd be smart enough to see reason. Because if you’re not, well…"

A distant sound filters through—the unmistakable muffled sobs of terrified people. Then a sharp cry, cut off abruptly.

"I don’t think I need to spell it out for you."
Feb 6, 2025 8:11 am
Fallon replies to the Beowulf. "I'm no doctor but I am the closest thing our ship has to a medic. I can come over and give you a hand." Then Dreks interrupts and Fallon has to bite her tongue to keep back a volley of vicious invective. The Wayward Wind is technically Seally's ship and she is their leader so she begins to suit up in her vacc suit while waiting for Seally's response.

Zuni can't help but be proud of the compliment from Beowulf's Captain. But the happy feeling didn't last long when their nemesis appeared on the screen.

Bastard! Zuni had gone from ebullient to seething in the span of a few seconds. They were caught in a very sticky situation with a ruthless amoral man. Zuni looks wide-eyed to Sealy for inspiration.
Feb 6, 2025 7:18 pm
Seally thinks a moment and then answers Dreks. "Hi baby, did you have a good nap? Your friends are no more, unfortunately. I was hoping to salvage some gear off the Calibrandr, but unfortunately she just fell apart at the slightest jostle. Nothing remains of them. Now, if you could just send us your exact coordinates, we'll resolve this quickly. If your other friends are listening, tell them they should take a few steps away."[/f] She waves sweetly and cuts the channel.

To Zuni she says, "Ahead to the Beowolf, Mr. Zuni, and get us into docking range. I want one of the Heretic Squad to accompany each of Alerio and Fallon. They might need their strength to move girders and so forth."
Feb 6, 2025 11:52 pm
"Aye aye captain. Oh wait, that's at sea isn't it? Yes sir, captain sir, I mean ma'am." Zuni reminds himself once again of all the years he wasted watching ancient movies from earth.

"I'm on it."

The excited and excitable pilot tries to deftly maneuver the ship into docking range.

Alerio makes her way up to the others as Seally pokes at Dreks! This is why she likes to be in the mix! If she had Dreks within arms reach, she could throttle him before he could harm any of the people Alerio had met before…

From this distance… She doesn’t share Seally’s bravado. But they are committed and they’d know the outcome by end of day!

"On my way." she offers to the captain of the Beowulf over comms!

Salvor Dreks
The comm blinks to life again, indicating Dreks has sent you another message after you cut the channel. If you choose to view it, you hear Salvor Dreks’ cold, controlled, voice dripping with barely contained fury.

"Oh, how sweet you are, Captain... Did your little joke bring you some small sense of victory? Congratulations. Meanwhile, down here, I’m entertaining our guests. They’ve been such gracious hosts, letting me borrow their homes, their precious little marketplace... and their lives."

"You want my coordinates, do you? Hmm. If you truly intend to resolve this quickly, you don’t need them. Just land my Wayward Wind at the downport. I’ll see you in person, where you can hand over my ship. And if you try anything funny, or if you come in guns blazing, well... let’s just say these good people of Startown will suffer the consequences."

"Now, you did me a favour, taking out the Calibrandr. I’ll admit, you must have gotten lucky, or maybe those Sword Worlders crew werer far less competent without me. Either way, if you believe your luck hasn’t run out, by all means, test it. Refuse me, and I’ll start making examples of these folks who so kindly provided me hospitality."

"So, one last time: land the ship at the downport. Hand it over. Or the good people of Walston will be the ones to suffer. I’m sure your capable pilot can navigate the final approach on your own. You have 1 hour to make your decision."

"Tick tock, darling."

Zuni brings the Wayward Wind up to the drifting Beowulf, the ship listing, hull scorched and leaving a trail of sparks. It's barely space worthy, but intact for now. If you could get the life support back up and manoeuvre drive up running, it could land for more extensive repairs.

As you make your way to the docking bridge, you find Heretic Squad is all suited up and ready to go.

"These Sword Worlders were no match for you," praises One as they fall in line with Alerio and Fallon. Though there is no outward emotion on the Feskal's serene face, you can hear the subtle pride in his voice. "Congratulations on your victory."

Each one of the broad-shouldered men are ready to accompany the crew as needed.
OOC:
Who's going over? Just Alerio and Fallon? Feel free to jump over at any time
When you cross the docking bridge and into the Beowulf, you immediately fall into zero-g, which is always disorienting for those untrained to operate in this manner. The air is thinning, but there's still enough atmosphere to hear warning sirens blaring, and the halls are bathed in flashing emergency lights that cut through a thick haze of smoke.

Comms are open with Seally and Zuni, who can hear everything that Fallon and Alerio can hear, and vice versa.

Captain Falkirk is there to greet you, and fills you in on the situation as he guides you through his cramped ship. "You couldn't have better timing. The Calibrandr just started shooting up Walston," he recalls. "Took out Central's defences and barracks, while pirates stormed the downport. We were trying to get away but the Calibrandr caught us. Come, our medical officer is wounded and on the bridge. And Engineering is through that portal, if you can lend a hand."

Moving in zero G is tricky, but fortunately, ships are designed with hand-holds along the corridors in the event of life support shutdown, and you make your way.

At the bridge, Fallon finds the medical officer badly burned from an explosion. You'll have to bring him back to the Wayward Wind to treat him as the air is too thin to remove their Vacc Suit, clearly put on him after sustaining the burns. Your Feskal is ready to help haul them.

In Engineering, Alerio finds the chief engineer working frantically to seal the microfractures in the hull and jump-start the atmosphere generators. He tosses you a data pad, which floats through the zero G gracefully, and brings you up to speed. There's not much time for thanks, but he does manage to interject: "Our bacon would be cooked if it weren't for you and your crew." He gestures to the Feskal: "Big fella, you mind holding this light?"
OOC:
Feel free to give us an Engineering and Medical check with a little in-character narration of what's going on, KCC and Nezz! The medical officer has serious burns and he's going to die without intervention, but you can cryofreeze him in a low berth if things don't go well. It'll be risky to thaw him, but maybe you can get some help with that. KCC, for your engineering check, you can roll with a Boon as you are working with help.

60 minutes until Dreks starts killing folks!
Feb 9, 2025 2:27 am
"You weren't kidding about just in time," Fallon says while looking at their medical officer. She tries to keep a blank face but she can't keep a wince out as she gives him a quick lookover. "He's badly burned. We can't treat him here; we'll have to move him to our ship immediately, but very gently. I'll inject him with some pain killers and saline for dehydration now. Ready?" She looks to her former Heretic Squad member for confirmation. "Ok, let's do it."

Beowulf looks worse than Zuni had anticipated but their crew was smart and resourceful. He hoped they could get the ship's drive and life support systems up and running. In the meantime, he'd hold The Wayward Wind steady as they approached and docked. He'd follow the action on the comms.

"Our victory!" Alerio reminds the newest members of their crew! They had done only slightly less than she in defense of the Wayward and the Beowulf! It was only right that they got to put a notch in their belt for the victory!

Fallon and One race the injured man back to the ship, slipping through the corridor as emergency lights flicker overhead. Painkillers and saline flood into his veins the moment they set him down, taking the edge off his agony. One, the Feskal Warrior, peels away the ruined vacc suit with utmost calm, and Fallon dives into a quick triage, gloved hands moving fast. The next ten minutes are tense—each breath the man takes rattles in his chest—but Fallon’s skill and steady focus pull him back from the brink. His vitals stabilize, no longer thrashing wildly, though he’s still in danger. They’ll need better equipment soon, but for now, he’s alive, thanks to Fallon’s quick thinking.

Meanwhile, Alerio locks herself onto the battered TL 12 life support system, rummaging through half-burned wiring bundles and outdated processors. She splices in a repurposed plasma manifold and overrides the corroded quantum servo-lubricators, forcing the antiquated gravity stabilizers to hum back to life. Deck plating shivers as gravitational pull returns, and a low hiss signals the oxygen processors spinning up. It’s a rough fix—telltale sparks jump from the improvised coupling harness—but it’ll keep the atmosphere cycling until the Beowulf can reach a proper starport.

The only hitch? The Walston downport is under pirate occupation, making a standard landing all but impossible. Regardless, their chief engineer claps Alerio on the back, eyes wide with admiration: "Where’d you learn to jury-rig a coupling harness like that?"
OOC:
50 minutes left until the Dreks' deadline! It'll take 10 minutes to arrive if you plan to fly down.
Feb 11, 2025 6:29 am
"I’m just as surprised as you are!" Alerio says at the praise. In truth, she wasn’t sure the stuff would hold all that long!

"You’re going to want to get this whole thing looked at… just as soon as we kick those losers out of the starport down there! You’ll limp along until then!

Just don’t go annoying any Sword Worlders that come flying by!"
Feb 11, 2025 8:03 am
"Well, Fallon says, taking off her gloves and washing up in the medbay sink. "One saved for now, thousands more in jeopardy down on Walston. What do you think, One? How would you deal with this asshole terrorist?"

In response to Fallon's question, the leader of the Heretic Squad is a bit surprised. He's used to taking orders from BInar masters, not sharing his insights. He gives it thought.

"All warfare is based on deception. By masking your true intentions, perhaps you can outmanoeuvre the enemy."
Feb 13, 2025 3:52 am
"Okay ladies, we've got a few moves. We made some good contacts here last time. Let's get on the waves and find out what we can. Zuni, as soon as the airlock is sealed get us clear and plot a course for Walston. We needed to find a place to land, but let's not waste time getting there."

Seally uses the comms herself to reach out to Alan Greener who holds, held, multiple portfolios including Fisheries, Transportation, and Sanitation.
Feb 13, 2025 8:21 am
Fallon nods her head. "It worked well taking out the Calibrandr, right? Pretend to acquiesce and offer up the ship, but bam! Surprise matronfornicator! It's an ambush!" Fallon grins. "But he may be expecting that. We will need a second layer of subterfuge, I think. Perhaps some Heretic Squad members who don't like freedom as much as they thought and wish to return to their squad?" she asks with a raised eyebrow, hoping he picks up on her suggestion.
Feb 13, 2025 11:39 am
"Risky! He doesn’t sound like the type to accept apologies! He could take care of them as soon as they show their faces!" Alerio says with a grimace!

"We either think of something really damn convincing, or we just face him head on!"

Maybe we could inspire an uprising, or call for back up…

Alan Greener returns your hail immediately. He comes on screen, looking bruised and dirty.

"Dame Seally, you and your crew have a knack for timely arrivals! Here's the situation - Dreks arrived last night in the Calibrandr and shot up Central pretty bad. Took us completely by surprise and neutralized our surface-to-air missiles, blew up our motor pool, and demolished our train system. The Palace got hit pretty hard, too."

"Since they hit our motor pool, we don't have much in the way of vehicles left. We've been warned that if we come within 5 miles of Startown, they'll start putting bullets in people. We have a team at the edge of that radius ready to respond, just ambulances with medical personnel."

"We have contact with Simi, the curator of the sand museum, on the inside in Startown. She counts at least 10 pirates, including Dreks. She and most of the hostages are being held in Hanky's, the local bar. The pirates seem to rotate in and out of Hanky's, so they must be holed up elsewhere, too."

"We've been working on a plan to use Horace Symon's old farming submarines to come into the town off the water, but we've only managed to get two working craft in range. Each can carry 4 people."

Seally passes that on to the others, copying the conversation into the logs for their review. "We've seven of us. We didn't come expecting to fight in a guerrilla action, but we're not unarmed. The two submarines would get us there and into their midst unexpectedly. If we can sneak up to Hanky's, perhaps we can ambush them. I wish we had a few canisters of sleep gas. I also wish someone would invent sleep gas."
Feb 14, 2025 6:22 pm
"It would be good to know where the other pirates are going when they leave the Hanky Panky. Maybe their guards will be down as they sleep or relax from their hostage-watching shift."

Chewing on a lip, deep in thought he adds, "Do the pirates know about the subs? How many hostages are being held? Any that can fight?"

"Sleeping gas? Our old friend Gino might be able to dig up a stun grenade. And hey, the Museum of Sand has an old Imperial sandcaster turret in it. We use it during Sand Days to make rainbow displays, so I'm sure it's in working order. It's meant to be mounted on a starship, but if you could find a way to pull the trigger, it could do some serious damage*"

"I don't think the pirates know about the subs, Horace operates them from an island out in the sea, there's little chance they've seen them. Ling Standard Model B farming subs."

He sends a photo your way to see what you're working with.

https://i.imgur.com/c8TAGRU.jpeg
*Sandcasters are meant to create clouds of sand in space combat that dissipate laser fire. Mostly a defensive thing; they'd barely scratch the paint of a starship. But when pointed at a ground-scale target, they do d6x10 damage, like a giant shotgun.
Feb 15, 2025 4:26 am
"Mr. Greener, we have the workings of a plan. We've got... Forty five minutes before we need to meet Dreks. If you can make arrangements for the two subs, we'll land as close to the water as we can."

After disconnecting, she passes that plan onto the others. "How does that sound? Who wants to do what?"
Feb 15, 2025 4:43 am
"My biggest worry is the hostages. Unless we take all of them at once they may start executing after the surprise. It might be best to divide them. If a few of us, or even one, land in Starpoint as Dreks asks, he will have to come out to claim the ship, probably bringing at least a few pirates with him. Then the rest of us take the sub to get to Hanky Panky's and surprise any pirates that are left. When Dreks realizes the ruse, he will be separated and pincered between the ship and his hideout. What do you all think?"
Feb 15, 2025 10:33 am
"I can do that!" Alerio offers immediately! She hadn’t seen much action in the air, and she felt more comfortable on the ground.

"I can draw them down into the port and punch them in the nose! Just don’t take too long getting linked up with me!"
Feb 15, 2025 3:39 pm
"I can land the bird in Starpoint. I hope. I mean without dying before I set her down, Zuni suggests with a meek smile that doesn't reach his eyes.

"But if it's just me, how will I fight off Dreks and his pirates?"

Alan Greener

Greener considers your plan. He's liking what he's hearing, and you can tell from the hopefulness in his voice. But he has one reservation.

"Only one problem - they have control of the Downport, so once you hit atmosphere they can track your movement. If you make a stop, they'll know you're up to something. I'm worried that will ruin the surprise, and they'll take that out on the hostages. You got any other options for getting down here? A landing craft or something?"
Feb 15, 2025 7:37 pm
Seally passes that onto the discussion. "So that's probably a no go on the subs. We'd need a landing craft and we don't even have a vehicle bay for that. Dreks will track us as soon as we hit atmo."

Feb 17, 2025 5:54 am
Alerio looks at the five meaning to board the Beowulf. They were all about descend into a fire fight at best, and a bloodbath at worst!

She hoped it wasn’t the last time she’d see all of those faces, but she couldn’t say the words! Speaking it into existence would be bad…

The crew splits up! Alerio and Zuni stay on the Wayward Wind, determined to land and engage with Dreks directly as Seally, Fallon, and the Heretic Squad head to the surface in the Beowulf to rendezvous with Horace Symon's coastal farming operation. There, the group will take the two subs and sneak up on Startown, and try to free the hostages!

Seally, Fallon, and the Heretic Squad depart. The Beowulf smells of burnt plastic and ozone, and everywhere there is damage. She's barely spaceworthy, and they could use a hand getting the ship into atmosphere without exploding!

The Beowulf already has an engineer and pilot, and they can make the necessary rolls. If you can suggest something that your skillset might do to improve their odds, go ahead and roleplay it, and it could contribute as a positive DM to the roll.
Meanwhile, Alerio and Zuni wait for the Beowulf to descend first. They try to buy as much time for the rescue mission as possible, but they keep a close watch on the deadline Dreks has set for when he will start terminating hostages if they don't deliver the Wayward Wind. As they descend, a pirate with a thick Solomani accent contacts the Wayward Wind and gives you a flight plan to the downport.

"Just play it nice and cool. We want them to think we’re cooperating!" Alerio says, though she wonders if the pirates anticipate something of the crew’s rebellious nature. To play it too safe would arouse suspicion.

"Copy, dorks!" she calls over the comms, hoping to rile them up only a little!
Feb 27, 2025 2:57 pm
"Yeah. Cool and so cooperative, which is going against every instinct I have now." Zuni was clenching his jaw to the point that it started to hurt as he watched the Beowulf descend.

"Let me know what the sensors are telling you while I guide this puppy in. We should probably be prepared for this whole thing to go sideways, so be ready."

For comic relief, Zuni makes fun of the pirate's thick accent, doing a terrible but amusing rendition of the man's flight plan instructions.

The Beowulf's engineer dives into the M-Drive chamber as the pilot tries to get things on the way. Seally helps by rerouting subsystems after being granted access by Captain Falkirk. The computer is much less sophisticated than Goldie. There is no holo-interface or avatar to work with; instead, she labours through voice command and screen output. The Beowulf has an archaic and basic personality.

You appear to be rerouting subsystems. Would you like to run the Subsystems Wizard?

After hastily declining the computer's generic help options, she bypasses several damaged computer relays in the Beowulf's neural processing network, which gives the Engineer some slack to work with.
OOC:
Seally has granted the engineering check a +1 DM!
Meanwhile, Fallon keeps her eyes on the jury-rigging that is keeping fleshbag life support going. The crew heeds her warning and dons their vacc suit helmets once more, re-pressurizing in case of sudden hull breach.
OOC:
Fallon has convinced the spacers to keep their space suits on in case of emergency.
And it turns it that was for good measure! Half-way through re-entry into Walston's atmosphere, the M-Drive starts to cut in and out, making manoeuvering difficult for the pilot! The comms are filled with the engineer's cursing as another plasma coil burns out on the grav plates.
OOC:
Whoops! That's going to make the piloting check 1 step more difficult, 10+
"Buckle up, everyone, this ride is about to get bumpy!" the pilot calls out on the intercomm as grav thrusters cut out. The whole ship begins to shake as gravity and extreme heat test the ship's hull integrity. Despite the turbulence, the pilot stays calm and brings the old rust bucket into a shallow, spiraling descent path, gliding towards Horace's underwater farming operation.

The Beowulf touches down in Walston's shallow ocean with an impressive splash. After a few moments, the ship comes to a rest, floating gently on the near-waveless surface. The sputtering drive pushes you close to a floating platform with a big rusty sign: "H2Orace Harvests" On the platform's top deck, you see the old cyborg waving you in to dock. The pilot obliges as Captain Falkirk leads you to the top hatch.

"Thanks for flying Beowulf Air. Never a dull moment."

In contrast, Zuni brings the Wayward Wind gracefully into Walston's atmosphere. The pirates grumble at Zuni and Alerio's flippant attitudes, but there's not much they can do - the boss wants their ship, and the last thing they want to do is blow it. So, the Wayward Wind descends in radio silence.

Alerio attempts a sensor sweep, seeing what she can see of the pirates' positions.

Fallon claps the pilot on shoulder.

"A dull life isn't a life worth living. If we survive this next part you all should join us at the beach. I promise it won't be dull," she says with a wink.

Without waiting for a response she heads out of the ship and onto the platform to meet Horace.
Mar 2, 2025 12:09 pm
"Nice and slow…" Alerio says, more to herself as she hammers away at her console to make sure she has eyes on everything as they approach!

"Reading data now!" she says, preparing to share her findings!

Rolls

Roll - (2d6+8)

(42) + 8 = 14

Mar 2, 2025 6:51 pm
Seally pries her finger from the arms of her station chair as the Beowulf bobs in the water. With Fallon's quip she is brought back out of her life-or-death flash-before-your-eyes-ing. She jumps up.

"Maybe they've even relaxed their rules about beach activities since we were here!" She shakes Falkirk's hand. "You're a good man. Thanks for the ride down. Now, we've got to see a pirate about some hostages."

She rounds up the heretic squad, helping them check their armor and guns. "One, Four, Nine, are you ready to show them what we're made of?"
Mar 4, 2025 2:11 am
"Whadya got Alerio? Tell me they all had heart attacks and dropped dead."

Zuni continues to ease the craft in, repeating a phrase he heard in an ancient movie, "slow and steady winds the race, slow and steady wins the race..."

THE WAYWARD WIND

Alerio is getting a good handle on the Wayward Wind's powerful sensor suite, and manages to pinpoint a number of lifeforms with weapon signatures within Startown (shown as red dots on the map). In addition, she counts thirty-seven unarmed lifeforms in Hanky's pub. She streams the data to Seally and Fallon.

"You seeing this? They’ve got that square licked down tight! We’ll need to give them a reason to come our way! Draw them off the bar!" she says, hoping Zuni has some ideas for what they could do.

Fake a malfunction, maybe?… Idle on the port and run down the clock?…
Mar 4, 2025 2:48 pm
"Yeah. Looks like 37 unarmed. Potential allies? How many with weapons? We could fake drive trouble or make a leak, something to distract and try to peel away potential help in our direction. Do we have any spare armaments? I know we can't arm them all but I'm thinking out loud here."
Mar 4, 2025 4:17 pm
H20RAACE HARVESTS
As usual, One speaks for Heretic Squad, confirming his unit's readiness in his usual laconic style. Before leaving Forine, they chose armaments suitable to their training:
[ +- ] One's Weapon: Gauss Rifle
[ +- ] Four's Weapon: Monofilament Blade
[ +- ] Nine's weapon: Gauss Sniper Rifle
Horace Symon greets you as you clamber out of the top hatch of the Beowulf and climb up to the platform.

"Greener has informed me of the plan. Please, be careful with my subs! I just got them up and working last week!" Despite his nervousness, he doesn't hesitate to give you the ignition code. He knows what's at stake here.

"You know how to drive these, right?" Well, maybe there's a little hestitation.
OOC:
There are two subs with room for 4, including a pilot. They aren't fast, but they'll get you there. The seas of Walston are quite shallow, and may require navigating around rocky outcrops and other terrain.
[ +- ] Farming Sub
Mar 5, 2025 1:48 am
Seally skates Horace's hand, and introduces him to Fallon and the Feskals.

"They're beauties all right. I've driven something similar back in the core. I won't say I'm going to do fancy tricks, but I'll bring them back in one piece. At least one, anyway."
Mar 5, 2025 6:55 am
"Just what I’ve got on me! How well can you land this thing?" Alerio asks, drumming up a plan in her mind.
Mar 5, 2025 2:04 pm
Fallon claps Horace on the back. "Not at all! But thankfully I won't be the one piloting them. I'm sure someone here does though, right?" She looks around at the others.
Mar 7, 2025 7:30 am
"Im thinking we have a busted landing! Something that looks convincing enough that they’ll come make sure the ship isn’t in danger. Any ideas?"
Mar 7, 2025 2:13 pm
"I could make a hard landing. But it won't be easy to put her down like that. You know what I mean? Hard yet not with so mucn force we end up with an unfixable problem".

Zuni makes a series of quick calculations, all of which scream wrong, but that's what they should do.

"Ok, hold onto your hat!"

Zuni starts the hard landing descent.
Mar 8, 2025 11:39 pm
The Feskals look at Fallon with a blank look as Horace leads you to the dock where the subs are tethered. "We were not taught to drive vehicles of any kind," One explains. "We are Infantry."

Horace frowns as talk of piloting the subs reveals your inexperience. "Are you telling me none of you know how to pilot these? I think I'm going to be sick..."
OOC:
The skill to pilot the submarines safely and stealthily to the Startown beach will require a routine (6+) Seafarer (Submarine) check (DEX). Nobody has this skill, so you will be a -3 to this roll (plus your DEX modifier). The subs are too primitive to have any computer autopilot software.

There is an extra seat, so if you could persuade Horace to come along, he could pilot one of them. But, somebody will still have to pilot the other. Average (8+) Persuasion check (SOC) will do the trick, although a convincing argument could bring down the task difficulty to routine (6+) or even easy (4+).
Mar 9, 2025 2:16 am
OOC:
Come on...

Rolls

Pilot Dex - (2d6+3)

(22) + 3 = 7

Mar 9, 2025 2:53 am
Fallon shrugs easily, as if this were no big problem. "I can't be both beautiful and good at everything. And submarines aren't the most common mode of transportation in the universe. But you can pilot one, can't you Horace? You don't have to come ashore with us, it will be perfectly safe for you. And anyone else who can pilot the others. I'm sure there has to be another pilot among us who is...good with their hands?" she arches an eyebrow seductively as she gazes at potential pilots.
OOC:
Geez why is my SOC so low for a journalist?? Haha I will have to find ways to bump that sucker up!

Rolls

Persuade - (2d6+1)

(25) + 1 = 8

Mar 9, 2025 11:26 pm
OOC:
Seally has Dex +0 so she's not a great choice.
Mar 10, 2025 1:39 am
"You sure you know what you’re doing?" Alerio asks, as something just feels off with the way they were approaching the star port. Not off how she expected, but off off…
Mar 10, 2025 2:46 am
"Shit, I'm doing the best I can. Give a man a break. I didn't train for semi-crash ladings, you know."

Sweat had started dripping into Zuni's eyes. She was right to doubt him now.

Whose dumb idea was this anyway?
Mar 10, 2025 11:57 pm
THE WAYWARD WIND
Klaxons sound off all through the ship as Zuni stalls the M-Drive to give the stunt an air of realism. Unfortunately, he finds it a lot harder to get the engines to turn back on! Goldie sounds off as the ship hurtles toward the ground: "CRITICAL DESCENT ALERT: Velocity exceeding safe limits. Immediate course correction required to avoid planetary impact."

Zuni does manage to get the M-Drive back online, but a little too late! The ship's hull groans as he pulls up on the stick as hard as he can, but there isn't enough time to slow the ship's descent. Goldie calmly announces: "BRACE FOR IMPACT."

There is a jarring smash and a deafening bang as the ship's belly scrapes against the landing pad of the downport. The impact is somewhat absorbed by the artificial gravity, but it still causes quite the upheaval within the ship. It skids off the landing pad and tears straight through the perimeter fence, continuing on into the desert sand, sending up a kaleidoscope of colours into the air. It comes to a stop, nose half-buried.
OOC:
Windy, go ahead and roll 2D damage to the ship for crash-landing it! If you roll 8 or higher, roll 2D and we'll consult the critical hit location table for systems damage beyond the hull.
Mar 11, 2025 12:08 am
H20RAACE HARVESTS
Horace is unwilling to get into the sub under these conditions. "Look ... I'm terrible under pressure, with lives hanging in the balance! I'll most likely put the mission in jeopardy. No, I am sure you are the right people for the job.

He hands you the ignition fobs and steps away.

The subs are old and smelly, but definitely watertight, and they do start without issue as you hit the ignition switch. Running lights all around fire up, illuminating the shallow sea, which, unlike the surface, is absolutely teaming with plant life.

Looking at the control panel, you figure it can't be that bad. Rudder, ballast, and pressurized thrust ... pretty simple, right?
OOC:
The Feskals have DEX +1, for a total of -2 on a Seafarer (Submarine) check. If you'd like one of them to drive, they will do so without hesitation and try their best. We will need to rolls, one for each sub.
Mar 11, 2025 12:27 am
"Fuck! Zuni exclaims while cringing at the sound of the underbelly scraping the pad, followed by the soft whoosh of sand pushing against the hull..

Rolls

Damage to Ship - (2d6)

(63) = 9

Systems Damage - (2d6)

(46) = 10

Mar 11, 2025 6:55 am
"You made that really convincing!" Alerio says, once she’s has stopped being thrown about by the force of the crash landing.

"Shit! We were only suppose to fake it!" she complains, rubbing something sore out of her back.
Mar 12, 2025 1:28 pm
Fallon shrugs. "Have it your way, they're your subs. Just don't blame us if things go wrong, we warned you about our driving abilities." She turns to the Feskals. "All right, well there's two subs and two of you, so I'll take that as a sign from the universe. Now that's decided, let's go!"

Rolls

Feskal One - (2d6-2)

(44) - 2 = 6

Feskal Two - (2d6-2)

(45) - 2 = 7

Mar 12, 2025 3:08 pm
"Come on, Alerio. Like I said before, I'm trained to land properly, not badly.

Zuni's forehead creases into an annoyed frown.

"Look at it this way. It was convincing!"
Mar 13, 2025 9:42 am
"You can say that again! Goldie, did they buy it?" Alerio asks the ship as she works the console to see if she can get a read on some bio-signatures moving in on the ship’s crash site!
Mar 17, 2025 4:22 am
THE WAYWARD WIND
As you silence the alarms, Goldie informs you the impact has caused damage to the Jump Drive. Alerio quickly confirms; the main Jump Field Emitter and the Hydrogen Inlet Manifold endured the brunt of the damage, which may compromise the ship’s ability to generate a stable Jump Field. Power and data logs additionally show circuit interruptions on the superconductor lattice responsible for shaping the projected bubble of hydrogen around the ship.
OOC:
You'll have DM -2 to future jump checks, until you can get this serviced at a decent class starport.
Salvor Dreks
Comms begin flashing ... Dreks comes through. "Seems like you were not as successful in your battle with the Calibradr as you let on. No matter. Leave the ship immediately. Once we have taken possession of The Wayward Wind and inspected it, we will be on our way, and leave the nice people of Walston unharmed."

Sensors show that the pirates from the downport terminal are converging on the crashed ship. A pair of pirates have come away from their posts guarding the dive bar and have brought two hostages with them.
OOC:
This information continues to stream to Seally and Fallon's devices.

UNDERWATER SUBS
One and Four look at each other with some skepticism as you elect them to pilot the subs. However, the Heretic Squad has utmost confidence in Seally and Fallon, and take their seats at the helm as the subs pressurize.
OOC:
How are we split up here? One of you in each sub? Or both in one? There's five of you and only room for 4, so you can split up or stay in the same sub.
The journey underwater is quite spectacular. Unlike the vast, empty plains of sand and rock on the surface, Horace’s submerged fields burst with vibrant life. As the subs glide beneath the surface, bright, darting fish swirl around your subs in a glittering, kaleidoscopic display. It’s a striking contrast to the endless plains of sand and rock above, and every new sight inspires a sense of wonder as you power through the depths.

The Feskals do what they can, but the seas are shallow, and both time and space are tight. They try to stay below the waves, but it becomes dangerous the closer to shore you get. A minefield of shoals and rocky outcrops threaten to capsize the ships, and as hard as they try, the Feskals are struggling to keep clear of them. Suddenly, the subs shudder and scrape against unseen rock, jolting everyone inside as they push through a treacherously narrow channel!
OOC:
For each sub, roll 2D damage for the sub. For each multiple of 4, roll 2D for structural critical damage to systems. Ex: if you roll 1-3, no crits. If you roll 4-7, 1 crit, if you roll 8-11, 2 crits. And god forbid, if you roll 12, that's 3 crits!
Mar 17, 2025 6:54 am
OOC:
I think best to split up to prevent any poesible away team tpks lol. I'll be in sub 1. Rolling damage. Lol I'm a high roller, I should never roll damage.

Sub 2 - (2d6)

(65) = 11

Mar 17, 2025 7:35 am
Alerio mutters to Zuni, as Dreks speaks over the comms:

"They’re about to be all over us! You ready to punch these goons in the nose! Use the ship for cover. They won’t want to damage it!"

Make them pay a dear price… she thinks, as she checks her weapon.

UNDERWATER SUBS
Fallon watches as her sub's indicator lights start flashing. It's old tech, but she can tell the sonar and computer systems have been damaged, but are still mostly operational. Perhaps more disconcerting is that water is leaking into the cab from the side of the impact!
OOC:
Nezz rolled up damage to Systems, which is onboard sensors, comms, and computers. Should roll 2D per crit to determine locations, so I'll roll another, and it turns out it's Amour. The subs basically have none, so we'll consider it hull damage - you've sprung a leak!

I'll go ahead and roll for Seally's sub. 9 damage = 2 crits, locations are Armor and Cargo.
On Seally's sub, the collision dislodges a whole slew of finishing nets and traps from a concealed container, which sink to the ocean floor. Water begins to spray into the sub's interior from a damaged seam in the hull.
OOC:
Propulsion is fine for the subs so you can keep on motoring onward to shore, provided you can deal with those leaks! Feel free to propose a solution.

Rolls

Crit #2 - (2d6)

(15) = 6

Seally's sub: collision damage - (2d6)

(36) = 9

Seally's sub: crits - (2d6, 2d6)

2d6 : (44) = 8

2d6 : (15) = 6

"As ready as I'll ever be," Zuni replies, dry-mouthed, doing his best to hide his nerves. "That's our ace in the hole. They won't want to harm the ship."
Mar 18, 2025 6:37 am
Which means we need to be willing to harm it… Alerio thinks, in the event that things turn really bad and the whole crew gets wiped out. The last sting in the tail they might have is to deny the ship to this pirate bastard.
Mar 22, 2025 12:46 am
Fallon curses. "Not directed at you, One!" she says quietly. "Accidents happen to the best of us! I'll see about patching us up."

Fallon races to find the leak. Her mind races, thinking of what could be used to repair a leak. Like a giant patch, but with metal and a rivet gun. Or a welding torch.
Mar 22, 2025 9:26 am
Alerio puts a hand to the console that would lower the ramp, and thus start the shooting.

"Are you in position?" she asks the submarine team through the comms.
Mar 22, 2025 4:53 pm
"We're all doing things beyond our training. Let's just get to the op, anyway we can. Lives are riding on us getting there in time."
Mar 22, 2025 11:12 pm
Fallon has to take a minute to think about how to answer Alerio's question.

"We're in a position! We might've had a teeny tiny setback that will take a few minutes to plug up. Quite busy, will contact again when finished!"
