A Birthday for Gertrude
Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.
Gertrude narrows her eyes behind her mask. "Sus," she declares...
"Alright, listen up!" Parish croaks, puffing up his chest. "First, thank you all for volunteering to help plan Gertrude’s surprise birthday party. Of course, the most important part of a surprise party is the element of...well, of surprise. So, nobody mention anything to Gertrude about this!
"We must act swiftly and resolutely to get everything prepared. Once we have chosen a party venue, we will decorate it and make space for plenty of snacks and refreshments. While I work on the cake, you’ll want to go about acquiring and wrapping your gifts for her. And when everything is prepared, the party shall commence! Good luck. Gertrude is counting on us. Let’s not let her down!"
"Ah, the old piano room! I almost forgot this place exists, even though it's totally been her the whole time!" Sal says. "Yeah, it's been a minute since I tickled the ol' ivories. Well, it might need some dusting, but it's a good space. Let's get crackin'!" He cracks his knuckles for emphasis.
"I can dig it, baby," Alex drawls, smirking as he places her head back on his shoulders and adjusts it. "A surprise party for Gertrude." She pauses, then continues, "Now who's Gertrude and waddathey like? We can fire up my bike if we need to hit the road to snag the perfect gift. Ain’t a highway I can’t handle. And ain't a birthday party I care to miss." She flips his keys around her finger, then looks around. "And nobody, but nobody, better burn that cake! That’s my job."
"Ooo, a surprise party, will it be?" Yola hums, her voice slow and smooth like honey over warm biscuits. "Well, I can’t think of a better excuse to pour a warm cuppa and celebrate a life well lived. Everyone needs a day to get properly fussed about."
Yola chuckles, then turns to the room. "What shall we do first? Gift gathering? Cake battering? Decor smattering?"
As it works, it also ponders inexplicably on what gift it might manifest for the victim of the birthday surprise. A low humming can be faintly heard by anyone that passes it by.
The fairy smiles broadly, eyes twinkling like silver stars. "As for myself, I have just the gift in mind for our dear, sweet Gertrude..."
They quietly wrap their gifts and quietly decorate. As for the guest they invited…
"Hey! Wow! What a shindig! This might be the wildest party I’ve been to, as long as we only count parties appropriate for minors!" They turn to Hey Kid, and add, "By which I mean, the lack of alcoholic beverages will keep this party exactly at the right level of wild, know what I mean? Of course ya don’t, and you don’t wanna know! I don’t wanna know either, so let’s change the topic!"
They salute Parish since he’s old and bossy and good at being old and bossy.
"Gert can count on me, and so can you, gramps!" Since Alex volunteered for cake lighting, Wren says, "Okay… if we got a biker on cake, then a pilot must answer to a higher calling, altitudinally speaking. —by decorating the ceiling! HAAA!"
⚡️ Laugh at my own joke.
"Ah! The perfect place for the sun!"
Wren sticks the yellow cardboard sun on the giant floating rock.
They ask Ptisilith, "Is that sunshine in your pocket, or are you just happy—" They glance at Hey Kid, then quickly change course as all great pilots do. "—because who wouldn’t be happy to have a pocket fulla sunshine! HAAAAA!!"

They then inform him, "What is going on is a celebration of Gertrude’s birth. Like all holidays, it comes but once a year—"
The frog hops off to the other side of the kitchen, leaving Robin to his own devices (for better or worse)!
"My friend… I know it’s early in the party, but you have already won the award for Best Costume!"
Wren pins a "gold medal" onto the cardboard sun.
"HA!"
He tosses her keys in the air and catches them with ease. "Me? I’m heading out to grab my gift. I’ll be back before you can say ‘surprise,’ and trust me, it’ll be worth the wait." Alex strides toward the door, pausing to glance back at Mel and the cerberus puppy. "Keep the excitement alive, Mel. The party needs your kind of energy."
"I think I’ll have a word with Lady Sherry about some floral touches. She always knows how to make a room feel special. And if I happen to find a Cuban cigar to celebrate with, well, who could blame me?" Yola begins shuffling toward the back porch, humming a jaunty tune.
As she passes the Moon Prince, she pats him on the arm with a gnarled branch and winks. "Don’t overthink it, darling. Just pick something for the girl that makes you smile. She’ll love it because it’s from you."

She begins to wander through the B&B, trying to figure out what's going on. She makes her way into the kitchen, where she sees Robin mixing up batter for what looks like will be a very large cake. Hmm..
"Hey there, Robin. What'cha working on there? Is there some sort of... special occasion happening?" she asks slyly, trying to pump the huge elemental for information.
The fairy then waits. And waits... And waits...
Monday sighs. This is taking longer than usual. They look for something to occupy their time. And that's when they spot the Moon Prince, apparently out of his depth. Monday smiles as they sidle up beside the lunar scion. "If you really can't think of something to get our dear, sweet Gertrude, I can acquire a gift on your behalf. I'll make sure it's precisely the sort of thing the young girl will enjoy. And all I simply ask for in return is the knowledge of your name. Your true name. Surely, 'the Moon Prince' is but a moniker. What is it you are really called? I simply must know!"

At the next town, Alex stops at a craft store and browses the aisles. his eyes light up when she spots an unfinished wooden box with a glass top. "Perfect," he mutters. She imagines painting it in shades of midnight blue with silver stars, lining it with velvet, and leaving room for Gertrude to store wishes and secrets.
"This’ll be one-of-a-kind," Alex decides, grabbing paint, brushes, and the box before heading back to the Bed & Breakfast.

She’s not going to get any answers here. She steps out of the kitchen and onto the back porch, where she sees Yola Oleander gathering flowers. Maybe the old shrub will spill some tea.

Could be anything, really—a wedding, an anniversary…" She waves a leafy branch vaguely. "Find me a day that ends with "y" and I'll find you a reason to celebrate."
Yola's wooden fingers pluck at her basket’s handle. "As for these flowers," she says, holding one up to inspect it dramatically, "Aren't they perfect for a bit of cheer? A little color for the season, don’t you think? Keeps things lively."
Her eyes twinkle with a sly glint as she adds, "But if I do hear of a party happening, you’ll be the first to know. Cross my roots and hope to wilt!"

Probably Mr. Boggs and Lady Sherry—oh, they’d make such a lovely couple, don’t you think?"
Yola sighs wistfully, clutching her basket of flowers. "Ah, loverly love. So sweet, so fleeting. And if it’s not Mr. Boggs and Sherry, well… I have heard whispers about Robin having a soft spot for the Moon Prince. Can you imagine?"
She chuckles and straightens up. "But who’s to say? This old shrub could just be imagining things. It’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s just the breeze these days."

"Now that mask o’ yours reminds me of the time I ran outta fuel while passing over the peak of an uncharted island. There was this tribe of ladies who wore red panda masks, pink flamingo masks, green dragon masks, and one wore the mask of a bearded man that looked so real, it might have once been a Viking’s face!
"—or clay and dried grass. Hard to say!"
They whisper to one of the skeletons, "Definitely a real face. You weren’t a viking once, were you?"
They go on, "Anyway, Gert, the masked ladies wanted me to be their Head Honcho. I just needed to wear a sharp necktie. Like, really sharp, especially on the inside. Dangerously sharp. I wore it over my scarf, and when the lady in the viking mask—or Bearded Lady, if you prefer—went to tighten my tie…"
Wren loosens their scarf. There’s a flaw in the fabric. A slight tear about a quarter-inch long.
"…she went and ripped my scarf, which is made from the steel wool of a steel sheep. I said now hold the phone, madame! This tie clashes with my scarf in a way that forces me to choose one. And I choose you, steel wool scarf!
"It goes without saying I had no choice but to resign from my position of Head Honcho."
With a look of remorse, Wren adjusts their scarf so the flaw (if anyone even noticed it) no longer shows.
"Can’t go back." They sigh. "I mean ‘can’t’ as in it’s impossible. The island’s uncharted. Maybe if I had a talking map like Dora, it could tell me how to return."

Before she can regain her composure, she spots Rag-and-Bones scuttling through a hallway. In her frustration, she can’t help making a flippant remark:

Yola immediately claps a leafy hand over her mouth, realizing she’s just blurted out that she’s aware of Rag-and-Bones’ plan—knowledge no one expected her to have. She forces a wobbly smile, turning back to her ruined petals.

The Bed & Breakfast's other residents are all here, along with a gaggle of guests. The piano room is fully decorated and Robin's cake sits proudly on the central table. Gertrude blanches behind her mask. She's too late.
"Oh, a surprise party for me? You shouldn't have. You really shouldn't have..."
"Would you like to open it?"
They offer Gertrude their gift.
Maybe this party will manage to be tolerable after all...
They hold out their gift for Gert!
"Um. Thanks, Wren. I can tell you put a lot of work into this," Gertrude says to the adventurer. Her tone is one of gentle ambivalence.
"Aw, but I don’t wanna bore ya. A rock from each of the seven continents and the five oceans. They’re, uh… labeled." Wren lifts a rock and there’s a sticker with "SA" printed on it. "Salvadore, Brazil for the South America rock," they mumble. "Yup."
The pilot says that, then stares blankly at Ptisilith with its sunbright glow. "Well, after eating my words, I got no room for cake. Ha."
Wren fires their grappler gun at a tree to swing away from the party and escape. The grappler gun slowly reels a broken branch into the open window. Wren decides to just use the door and the stairs to exit, butt-waving to whoever they pass on the way out.
While waiting for the other guests to approach her with presents, somebody hands her a slice of Robin's cake. She lifts the bottom of her mask slightly to take a bite. It's sweet and fluffy and tastes somewhat of... anchovies...
"Mmm," Gertrude says as she politely puts the cake down and slowly steps away from it.
"My friend Merv and I got this for you! Hope you like it!" she says. Then she remembers the confetti she made and throws a handful of shredded rainbow paper into the air, shouting "Happy Birthday!"
She wolfs down her piece of the birthday cake and goes back for another, entranced by the tangy, savory taste it has.
A necklace made of spun gold with a lantern pendant
Her cheeks flush behind her mask. This is the first piece of jewelry she's ever owned. She slips the necklace over her head and touches the pendant as it settles in over her chest. It feels nice.
Monday presses the scroll into Gertrude's hand and gently "boops" the nose of her mask with a long, purple finger. "Enjoy the rest of your party, dearie. We will speak soon."
They turn to leave, but they pause as they pass by the Moon Prince. The fairy lowers their voice and whispers to the Prince. "I know you took something from my gift shop. Around here, when you take something from a shop without paying for it, it is called theft. You are new to Earth and the concept of money, so I will forgive your crime this one time. But you will owe me a favor as payment for the glitter you took. A favor I shall collect at a later date."
Monday smiles, adjusts their jacket, and flutters away.
"Hey, kid," he says quietly, running a thumb over the smooth varnish. "I, uh, know we don't know each other so well - but I hope you like this. It’s a keepsake box. For your… well, your keepsakes, I guess." She lifts the lid, revealing a plush velvet lining and a faint, ghostly shimmer along the inside edges.
"Took me more tries than I’ll admit to get the stars right," Alex continues, "but…I hear you're the kind of person who deserves something a little special, you know? Seems you’ve got dreams big enough to fill a whole sky."
With that, he steps back, trying to hide the fact she’s actually quite nervous.
