Dorian, impressed with either the impersonation of Zix, or their transformation, leads her to a side room.

"Oh, what's this?" He reaches into his jacket.
OOC:
I imagine that's a failed roll.
"Never mind."

Rolls

Illusio (Deceive) - (1d4, 1d6)

1d4 : (3) = 3

1d6 : (2) = 2

Well... In this game, your characters are the protagonists, which means they automatically succeed at what they attempt, unless there’s meaningful opposition.

Opposition can come from another PC actively resisting (by rolling against you). If they succeed, we describe how awesome they are, not how your PC failed.

Or opposition can come from a risky situation where failure would lead to an interesting result (which is when I would roll). If I succeed, I would describe how interesting, complex and complicated things got, not how your PC botched it.

If there’s no opposition, you don’t need to roll—the action just happens. Since you rolled, I assume you expected some challenge, but if you’re now giving up before seeing any opposition, that makes the roll unnecessary and you should have... Told us what happened, not a "never mind" =)

So, I am confused. Let’s clarify what you’re trying to do and whether there’s any actual resistance to your Illusio before moving forward. =)

Now in the side room, Lyandra glances at Dorian's hand, then back at his face, and smirks. "Fooled me there for a second: I thought you would really produce a strawberry. But I guess we'll have to do without."

Well... So the "nevermind" is now part of the story and was on purpose all along. That was a neat solution, vicky_molokh, thanks!

OOC I think the intent was to produce a tiara illusion, but this way if there's a tiara illusion, the response still makes sense.

OOC:
If the intent was to create an illusion of a tiara for Zix, then this is exactly the kind of situation where we roll because there’s meaningful opposition. The outcome isn’t about making one character look foolish or incompetent—it’s about highlighting how awesome they are. If Zix sees through the illusion, it’s because he’s sharp and perceptive. If he doesn’t, it’s because Dorian’s magic is truly flawless. That’s how we frame things in this game: success makes your character shine, and failure makes the opposition look just as interesting or impressive.

I’m posting this explanation because we’re in the ‘tutorial’ threads, and not all games or GMs handle things this way. Different tables might frame rolls and results differently.

OOC:
Yes that was intent, however he's new to magic so in my head it makes sense that it' doesn't perform flawlessly.

The purpose was, however, to demonstrate the sorts of powers they have together when they work together.

Well, whether you keep the post as is, or edit it to a successful show of a tiara, doesn't really change the reply, so may as well go ahead and reply.

Dorian sighs. "Indeed, a strawberry would have been perfect. Just the sort of whimsy that would have let all of the tension out of the conversation. You have a storyteller's ear for pace and tone, know doubt there."

He flaps his jacket coat and then pulls out a feathered tiara, brilliant with hundreds of tiny, iridescent feathers mounted to a twisted band of silver and gold crescent shaped as tiara's are. "Perhaps I traded it for this old thing."

"Well," Lyandra smiles, "I bet your ace up the sleeve is less real than mine, or else you would've traded it for prolonging the luxurious lifestyle a bit more."
OOC:
I'm comparing this roll against Dorian's roll outcome.
"I wonder if you'd be able to taste your own illusion. Or is that bound to fail much like trying to tickle yourself? Do you know the answer? Or would you try anyway even despite knowing?"

Rolls

Notice or theoretically know about flaws of illusions (Mental+Observation or Lore) - (1d8+1d6)

(4) + (4) = 8

Dorian can't even feel the tiara in his hand, and says, "It is only as real as you believe. Giving it a taste would require more than my humble arts are worth. I'm not sure that I know what feathered tiara's taste like! Still, at a distance, it looks like the real thing."

"Well, I wasn't thinking of an illusory tiara when I asked that."

If this was meant as a joke, it didn't seem to work, judging by a lack of reaction. Then the 'warrior' looked aroud to make sure nobody was eavesdropping.

"So, what now?"

He stashes the 'tiara' away and says, "Tomorrow, we arrive at Misthaven, and let the world open before us."

"That's tomorrow," 'Lyandra' tilted her head to the side and grimaced slightly.

"I'm talking about now. We could go back and improvise some more for the amusement of our spectators. We could leave them behind and continue for our own sakes. We could end the act and call it a night. What do you say?"
