Alpha Site: 0555hrs

Each of you had been here for the week. An eventful week at that. Though the tragedy at the dig had cast a shadow upon it, work had quickened in pace since. Literally everyone was abuzz at the discovery of the coverstone. After three days of excavation the stone had been safely extracted revealing a metal ring covered in symbols.

The military presence had been summoned because of the nature of radiation emanating from the object. No one had any clue as to what the purpose of the ring could have been. But, working tirelessly Duclair and Dr. Connel-Gulbane had interpreted it to be some kind of "portal."

Progress went rapidly, when a call from Beta Site revealed a set of symbols that corresponded to the markings on the portal. Only last night had the first set been tested. The result was a burst of energy from the portal that had stabilized into what the eggheads called an "Einstein-Rosen Bridge."

A robot outfitted with cameras and sensors had been sent through. After arriving at its destination it revealed a grassy plane, mountains, forests, and a skyline with two suns.

The klaxon of the site wide intercom buzzed twice, jarring those who may have been asleep to full wakefulness. At Alpha site it took the laziest person the better part of a day to realize, life and death happened due to how a person responded to the intercom.

"Kowalsky, Messer, Rodriguez, Donahue, and Duclair. Assemble at Sub-Level 3 for assignment." Came Watch Officer Gennady Rochenkin's monotone voice over the intercom.

Veronica was already awake, hunched over a datapad at the edge of her cot, scribbling notes into the margins of an engineering blueprint. The sharp buzz of the intercom jarred the room, making her jump slightly. She tossed the datapad aside, running a hand through her dark, tousled hair, and listened intently as her name was called.

"Kowalsky, Messer, Rodriguez, Donahue, and Duclair. Assemble at Sub-Level 3 for assignment."

Her jaw tensed. Another day, another test, she thought, tying her boots with practiced efficiency. The words Einstein-Rosen Bridge lingered in her mind, and despite herself, she felt a pang of excitement. The last test had been promising. But the exhilaration was tempered by caution.

Veronica swung her jacket over her shoulder, moving with purpose through the narrow corridors of the Alpha Site. Others scurried in various states of disarray, some muttering under their breath about the early-morning summons, others still groggy. Veronica didn’t bother with small talk, weaving through the crowd with practiced detachment, her mind already spinning through the possibilities.

Elias was arranging his notes on the outer symbols of the ancient portal trying to find some commonality between know ancient languages and the one on the ring of stones. He looks up as the intercom sprang to life.

"Kowalsky, Messer, Rodriguez, Donahue, and Duclair. Assemble at Sub-Level 3 for assignment."

His nerves feel like electricity as excitement shines in his eyes. Quickly he closes his laptop and grabs his coat.

As he exits his room, Veronica passes him as she purposefully moves through the crowd.

He follows her trying to catch up, "Hey! Wait up! Do you think we’re going through today?" His computer bag swings at his side as he jogs through the crowd.

Asher is in a deep sleep. He dreams of rappelling down the caves once more, symbols like the ones on the portal littering the stone walls. Suddenly, he feels a strange tug on the line and then he is falling into the darkness, landing in a coffin like O'Malley was laid to rest in.

He wakes up in a cold sweat and jumps when the intercom buzzes and crackles to life.

"Kowalsky, Messer, Rodriguez, Donahue, and Duclair. Assemble at Sub-Level 3 for assignment."

He quickly moves to the sink to wash his face and the sweat away. He combs back his hair and heads out the door, ready to be active again and take his mind off his fears.

He rubs his eyes a little as Rodriguez passes by and Duclair calls after her. He straightens up and follows after them, feeling more at ease that the two are part of the upcoming mission.

2nd Lieutenant Kowalsky looked his usual self, beyond tired, the Gulf War had taken a toll on his mental state but he was recovering well. He shared his thoughts on the state of Iraq with anyone who was curious. He had been an Operator in Delta Force.

Messer had been an infectious disease specialist for Doctor's Without Borders since 1989, and had recently left after the Zulu Ebola outbreak. He was an odd one, having a doctorates in general medicine, a PhD in Virology, and a Master's Degree in Eastern medicine. It turns out he knew Connel-Gulbane and Chief Lauman from their childhood. He referred to them as "The Twins" even though they weren't biologically related. A jab at how alike the duo were in mannerism and appearance.

They met on the lift, with Franziska Edwards already present. She had her normal composure, and the perperually pissed look that made her look scary despite her diminutive stature. She was sipping coffee from a steel insulated travel mug. Nearby a parcel labelled "Elias DuClair" right next to her. Upon seeing the Doctor she beckoned him. "Here's your orser Elias. You can always pick them up at the distribution facility on sublevel 1 if you can't wait. Good work keeping your cool last week, that was a tough situation by any standard."

After directing Elias to his order she took a separate box, a smaller sized from inside her suit coat. A charcoal silk suit, with emerald green accents that matches her blouse. Wearing a pencil skirt and somehow managing stillettos despite the utilitarian construction of the lift. "And a gift from the Brass for all of you. Matching patches! Now you all look official." a glue on set of velcro patches.

"Alright! Thanks.", Elias says taking his order and his patch. He slaps it on the left shoulder of his canvas coat. It looked good, felt good.

He then opens his parcel.

Asher grins at the new patch and gives a friendly roll of the eyes, but attaches it to his sleeve nonetheless. He tries to nonchalantly see what is in the parcel Elias has ordered, curious about what the facility could not provide.

Veronica follows suit much more interested in their next challenge than the contents of Elias' parcel.

Travelling to the gate was a much simpler task now that the water level had been lowered by sumps pumping the cave water into the power station in Sublevel 1. The rudimentary bridge of plastic floats and wire was suitable for foot traffic. Not glamorous but functional and industrious.

Justice was already set to go at the gateroom sitting on the motorized unmanned vehicle holding most of the expeditions equipment, he was strumming on a banjo practicing scales - dressed in khaki and tiger stripe camouflage, with a tan colored poncho. He looked quite cozy as he strummed idly and hummed along. His own equipment was fairly light, and pretty much what one would expect for their mission. The mission parameter was to travel through the gate and ascertain a means for a return trip. The expedition had been outfitted for one month stay beyond the gate. Whereupon Alpha Site would dial back for the return trip.

After everyone assembled for readiness the gate began to dial. A pool of shimmering water exploded between the ring. Promising a new frontier, untouched it seemed by humans.

"The reading from the probe indicated it gets quite cold during transit, which lasts for just a little over one quarter second." Justice briefed and started to stride to the debarkation ramp. "But its temperate, even at night on the other side. We have a busy day ahead campers, so lets get to it." He stopped in awe of the pool, it was written on his face as he observed the seemingly magical portal before him. Justice just grinned, shook his head and chuckled as he walked into the event horizon. The Unmanned vehicle slowly made its way to the shimmering pool. Neither he nor the automaton even slowed as they traversed into the liminal bridge.

Transit through the gate is obviously a shock to the system. Roll Fighting Ability, if you fail you'll likely just be embarrassed, but if AA succeeds you will suffer badly enough in transit to take a hit.

Asher watches in awe as the gate "dials" and a shimmer appears inside the ring.

What a technological marvel! How old is this or how new is it?

He wished he could stop and do more analysis on it, but shakes his head and prepares to gear up. He picks up his assigned equipment and anything else it looks like needs to be brought through the portal. Even though he saw Justice step through almost nonchalantly, he holds his breath right before following.

Rodriguez stood at the base of the ramp, her expression unreadable behind the stoic professionalism she had mastered over years of service. The event horizon shimmered in front of her, a liquid wall of unknown physics that defied every instinct drilled into her since boot camp.

Her grip tightened around the rail of her rifle, fingers steady despite the faint tension in her jaw. She had read the reports, studied the briefings, and watched the footage—but none of that replicated the sheer presence of the gate itself.

Her boots hit the metal of the ramp with a measured cadence, each movement deliberate. She was aware of the others watching—her team, the base personnel, and the unknown beyond the threshold. She adjusted her pack, checked the sling on her weapon, and kept her breathing steady.

Transit will be cold, approximately point-two-five seconds. Maintain forward momentum, she reminded herself under her breath.

Then, without hesitation—because hesitation had no place in her world—she stepped through.

For a fraction of a heartbeat, ice surged through her veins, her skin prickling with something beyond cold. Her vision blurred into a swirl of light and motion, her equilibrium thrown into a momentary freefall. Then, just as quickly, it was over.

Cold had been an understatement. Transit was also not quite accurate to what transpired. The event horizon, felt exactly like freezing cold water. But had acted like a buffer, analyzing the matter which entered the pool. A sixth sense told the human mind it had been known, upon touching the pool in the deepest and most complete sense the gate had known you. This was the shortest part of transit. Fortunately whatever had converted your matter to pure energy did it in an instant, else you mind - still fully conscious - would have felt as it tore your mass apart.

That quarter second might have been an eternity in transit. The sensation of movement certainly existed in the liminal space, however distance and time lost coherence. Therefore, it was directionless, and eternal. An immediate knowing, this was where consciousness lay. And at the knowing, transit ended. A sudden splash into ice water, without wet. And you arrived, pushed through the gate by inertia. The first interplanetary travellers of the age.

The body, and more importantly the mind, on reflex wanted to take a deep breath upon completion of transit. Donahue, who had a lungful of air learned with only a minimum of pain, exhaling before transit was the best choice. He would be fine, but as his diagphragm spasmed he learned. It was painful, but every instinct told him it could have been much worse.

The gate had deposited the team ahead of the MALP, somehow giving priority to living creatures. The air here was sweet, mentholated. It felt quite pleasant. Narcosis was mild, pleasant, but did not induce euphoria only heightened clarity.

Far to the north the naked eye could make out a drop before the horizon was swallowed into water. To the east grasslands. To the south the grassland terminated at what appeared to be a treeline. The west increased in elevation, into a mountain range. Ambient occlusion was higher, distance skewed by the second sun, doubling shadows created a halo effect arround reflected surfaces. But this world was beautiful. It even smelled like heaven, sweet and spicy grass in abundance were instinctively mouthwatering.

Responding to the explosion of gate transit. A flock of birds took flight shrieking in panic flying northward. Landing several hundred yards distant.
Feb 27, 2025 7:14 pm
Veronica Rodriguez stumbled forward, knees flexing instinctively to absorb the sudden deceleration from the gate's transit. She snapped her weapon into a low-ready stance, pivoting in place to scan the immediate surroundings.

To the north, a flock of birds burst skyward, their cries splitting the otherwise serene atmosphere. Veronica turned toward the disturbance, tracking them with her rifle out of habit before quickly dismissing them as no immediate threat. Just wildlife reacting to their arrival. Still, she silently logged the information: the presence of birds meant no big predator had disturbed this area recently.

Open terrain, good sightlines.

To the west, the land rose into rugged mountains, while the south presented a treeline—possible cover, possible danger.

She took a knee near the MALP, running her gloved fingers lightly over its casing. "MALP's here. Systems booting. No damage."
The world around her was still settling—air pressure equalizing, local fauna adapting to their presence. Rodriguez straightened and keyed her radio again. "Perimeter check. No hostiles visible." The air’s... weird. She didn’t mention the heightened clarity. Not yet. No need to put a name to something that might just be her body adjusting.

She took a few cautious steps forward, boots pressing into the soft grass. "Command, this is Rodriguez. Team's through, MALP is operational. No immediate threats. Proceeding with orientation and perimeter security."

The strange sensation of movement and feeling of eternity, along with the poor choice of holding his breath, results in some very painful hiccups when Asher arrives on the other side of the gate. He should have been taking more notes on the transit and how to smooth the process, but he was just going to have to try again on the way back. He unceremoniously collapses onto the ground once he is through and is afraid he is seeing double before he looks up and sees the two suns. He quickly barrel rolls out of the way for Rodriguez to come through and gulps in air to try and stop the hiccuping. The sweetness of the air compared to the underground base on Earth seems to quickly calm his diaphragm and he is able to stand with no further issue.

Extremely lucky. Hopefully I didn't spend all my luck just now. Rodriguez looks like she has security under control.

He gives a quick nod to Rodriguez and checks Elias has arrived without injury. He then looks around for Justice for next orders and helps to prepare the way for the MALP.

Windswept grasses had an all too predictable effect on humans. It was as if there was something built into our species that told us collectively to look and listen. And when it happened, the silence had to be broken.

"Huh, looks like Oklahoma." Justice muttured and considered the scene. "Water to the north, some kind of lake." He rose a setof binoculars and scanned the shore. "Good as place as any to set up camp. No shelter though." He turns to Veronica and Kowalsky. "Thoughts?"
Mar 1, 2025 1:48 pm
Elias stares at the windswept grasses and adjusts his pack. "A new world with two suns…", he thinks. The twin suns warmth a nice reprieve from the gate’s cold touch.

Veronica reads her equipment to see if the measuring instruments show any sign of possible chemical or biological factors in the air that would explain the scent and heightened clarity in that moment. "First we should check the MALP for atmospheric composition, radiation levels, electromagnetic activity and such." She nods in the direction of the more sciency inclined team members.

"Donahue and I will check the perimeter while maintaining line of sight and see if we can't find any defensive formation closeby." Any cover or concealement options might be vital in the near future. "I vote for checking south first. We should head for the tree line for initial recon and maintain a defensive formation. The trees offer some cover, possible food and material sources and could serve as a good defensive position without being too exposed. There could be unknown threats, of course, but I'd rather know what's lurking."

Veronica waits to see what the others think, then says: "First, we need to check communications." She tries out the functionality of her radio. Being able to talk to the others from some distance is essential.
OOC:
What do you guys think? Who can read the MALP displays and measurements to see if we breathe any funny stuff?

Can we communicate with the base on earth? Were we given a mission other than to explore? Is Justice the big cheese in the team? thx
