OOC:
Yes, you're in the small room. Thomas found the chest hidden from sight. It is located in the centre of the room, among the piles of treasures.
Mar 15, 2025 9:47 am
As Robert touches the heavy stone lid of the chest, the sounds of crashing from the antechamber stop, and the footsteps begin again. Getting closer...
OOC:
Give me a Strength check, Robert.

OOC:

Got it. Thanks for clearifying.
Knifesedgegames says:
[ooc]Yes, you're in the small room. Thomas found the chest hidden from sight.
"Oh my god. What is that?, Eugen responds to the sudden appearance of the chest.
Mar 15, 2025 1:46 pm
Robert gritted his teeth and tried to lift open the lid, whispering, "This thing is heavy."

As everyone gathers round, Robert lifts off the stone lid revealing five jars carved from limestone, four are topped with an animal head, a falcon, a crocodile, an ibis, and a wolf. The fifth has a carved inverted ankh jutting from its lid.
OOC:
Knowledge of these requires and Archaeology test, which Eugen has already passed with an extreme success.

The sound of the heavy footsteps is getting closer. You suspect the creature has re-entered the burial chamber and is moving faster.

Over that sound you hear a steady beat coming from the jars

Thomas is not a scholar. He spent no time in fancy schools, nor has he read the great works. Thomas might have gotten a better education, if it weren't for his family's common station, and the war. But the war was it's own kind of education. A cruel and brutal one. People look at Thomas and often mistake his stare as vacant, and empty, instead of what it is. They ignore that Thomas survived one of the deadliest fronts of the Great War. They ignore that to survive what he had Thomas was three things, lucky, cunning, and willing to act. He looks down and sees five jars. Four have animal heads, and one is different. Quick as a cat Thomas snatches the lid off the jar that didn't fit the others and peers inside. His knife is held high, and ready to strike what his gut tells him is inside.

Opening the jar, Thomas reveals a living, beating heart!
OOC:
Sanity checks everyone! (1/1d3)

Lady Bishop turns to Eugen and whispers, "Mr. Chornyi, perhaps you could..."

But before she can say anymore, she sees Thomas and Robert hovering over a chest they've pulled out. With great effort, Robert lifts the lid. Though it is probably faint, a steady loud beating sound resounds in her ears, emanating from the jars inside the chest! She is drawn forward and gets a sickly feeling as her eyes fall upon the jar with the inverted ankh.

Thomas, ever a military man, is quicker than the others and grabs the horrid jar, snatching its lid off. He lowers it a little, prepared to do what he must. She peeks inside and her eyes become as big as saucers, seeing for the first time a living, beating human heart!

Good roll, but you still lose 1 sanity, Clara
Mar 16, 2025 12:31 am
Thomas sees the bloody pulsing muscle in the jar and without thought or hesitation plunges his knife deep into it's center.
OOC:
Thomas succeeds his sanity roll, having seen far worse things in combat, but it still takes a minor mental toll. I have removed 1 sanity.

Robert was astonished to find a living beating heart! He knew that the canopic jars held the organs of the mummified subject but those should have degenerated by now. To witness such horrific unreality, he gasped when Thomas took it out. "What the…."

Just waiting on Eugen's roll before I resolve Thomas's action. @tergolap
Mar 16, 2025 1:43 pm
After his comrades lifted the chest and opened it, Eugen immediately saw, that something was odd. The Canopic jars! The numbers were not right, and their lids even more so.

He tries to explain to the others, to answer Lady Bishop's request for explanation.
But as Thomas opened the jar with the inverted Ankh-symbol, Eugen once again felt the panic crawling into his head.

"The Ankh …. It's not meant to be here. And it's inverted! Ankh means life and ..."

Eugen shivers, as Thomas thrusts his knife into the beating heart. The candlelight trembles, as the fear rises.
OOC:
I was lucky with my roll this time. Just 1 point loss of sanity.
One more point and Eugen goes completely nuts.
Sanity was 34, is now 33.

Thomas plunges his blade into the beating heart and there's suddenly a howl of pain, something animalistic , followed by a heavy thud as something hits the floor in the room behind you.

Dust begins to fall from the ceiling...
Mar 16, 2025 7:23 pm
OOC:
The dust from the ceiling is just a result of the beast hitting the floor?
Or does it more feel like we finally get help?
Or like the whole structure is going g to collapse?

OOC:
The last one certainly feels likely

Robert is mesmerized as well as horrified by what was going in front of him. He witnessed more than a thousand-year-old heart still beating that was just impaled. It probably belonged to the creature that was stalking them in the confined tomb halls who gave that animalistic howl. And now the walls started to collapse! "Oh Lord! This will be my grave!" His legs shaking, he was unable to decide what to do.
Mar 17, 2025 6:14 am
Thomas flings the filthy old heart away and leaps to his feet.

"Quickly! To the treasure room. I'm going to try and blow the door. This whole bloody thing is coming down!" he shouts as he takes off. As he's running he wipes his knife on his pant leg before slamming it securely into his sheath.
