SudoDragon PC Creation Thread

Please review the Principles for Players on page 5 of the Cairn 2e Player’s Guide, then proceed to character generation on page 8. That is, work through Background, Name, Inventory, Attributes, Hit Protection, Traits, Bonds, and Age. If you end up being the youngest PC, determine an Omen as well.

Sounds good I just got the book delivered this weekend so I’ll give it a look and start rolling. A little tight on time today but I should be able to get to it tomorrow.

All good. Remember that I'm pretty tied up until next week, so you've got plenty of time.

Amazing, this guy is such an absolute mess - should be a joy to play.

Background: Marchguard

Attributes: Str 4 [!!], Dex 6 [!], Will 15; HP 3

Traits: Lanky, scarred skin, filthy hair, sharp face, booming speech, frayed clothing, merciful and aggressive (those should balance each other well).

Age: 22

Bond: You once freed a Naiad from a choked stream. In return, it gave you some Silver Moss (petty). Swallow it near water, and the creature will come, once, to repay its debt.

Okay, let's see about the Marchguard Oaths...

Rolls

Why did you take the Oath? - (1d6)

(4) = 4

What do you carry as proof of your Oath? - (1d6)

(2) = 2

Starting Gold - (3d6)

(641) = 11

Feb 18, 2025 7:36 pm
Why did you take the Oath? When your family lost everything, you took the Oath to avoid becoming a burden. Take extra Rations (3 uses) and a brace of Throwing Knives (d6).

What do you carry as proof of your Oath? Oath Compass - Points not towards North, but instead to the nearest member of the Guard. It also lets you know when they’re getting close.

Looking good! The reason is perfect - explains perfectly why this brainy kid who can't do anything physical would sign up. I'll think up a name and get some art in a bit.

This is Gann. Image has a tiny bit of color, let me know if it fits the style. One too many fingers too, oh well.

Tough stats for a Marchguard! Feel free to proceed as-is, but remember you can also swap two attribute scores if you want.
Feb 24, 2025 6:19 pm
Yeah I switched STR and WIL on the character sheet itself. At least he’ll have a fighting chance that way!

Just saw that!

A couple of questions on my gear:

I gather light sources are fairly important. Will I be able to use my long sword at all while holding the lantern? It isn’t clear to me whether bulky means it takes two hands or just that it weighs a lot and takes two slots that way.

And how does my brace of throwing knives work, I don’t think ammunition is tracked so can I just throw knives as long as I have them in hand, or will I expect to run out of them after a few throws?

Light sources are indeed important, but it’s not like every single party member needs to have one lit at the same time. Torches and lanterns need to be in a hand slot, or you just have to have a free hand slot. Bulky things take up two slots, but I apply some nuance to it:

Bulky Items are heavy, big, or both. They need to be in your hands if you don’t have a way to carry them — a pack or sack they fit into.

Bulky Armor takes Body or Pack slots.

Bulky Weapons, if they are to be used, take both hands. Bows, crossbows, great axes, etc.
A brace of throwing knives is usually three. I would just notate it thusly: Brace of Throwing Knives (3)

If you lose one, you’ll have two, etc.

Oh interesting. The entry said throwing knives (d6) - I thought that was the damage, is that the number of them instead? If so I guess I’ll roll for it, what damage do they do?
Feb 26, 2025 3:59 am
d6 is the damage for a dagger or knife, yep.

Where is the "brace of throwing knives" coming from in the book?

Looking at Gann's inventory, couple of comments:

I would simply write "Longsword (d10 dmg, Bulky)" and leave the notes field free for other things that might go down with the longsword.

The Helmet offers +1 Armor.

The Rations and the Oil are limited to (3) uses per slot. So to take (6) uses, that consumes two slots for each. A la:

Rations (3)
Rations (3)
Oil (3)
Oil (3)

Make sense?
Feb 26, 2025 7:24 am
Interesting, okay so I think I’ll have to just drop the throwing knives then. It seems weird that simply rolling the option that gives extra rations and the knives immediately maxes out your inventory, forcing something to be dropped, but so it is.
Feb 26, 2025 7:28 am
Ah, it looks like the oil can shows 6 uses in the marketplace. Are you sure that maxes as 3?
Feb 26, 2025 8:45 pm
Right you are, my bad on the oil. Basically, everything you see there has as many uses as listed and takes up one slot unless it’s marked as Bulky or Petty.
Feb 27, 2025 5:22 am
Awesome, I’ve combined the oils and added back the throwing knives. Thanks for clarifying!
Feb 27, 2025 5:43 am
You can also leave the '3' off the Throwing Knifes if you want Gant to have like a *lot* of throwing knives. :)

I see that it's not limited in the book, so it's meant to model him having lots of chuckable knives. It's the sort of thing in an OSR game where if you've thrown several already, I might make you roll a die of Fate (d6) to see if you have more. Or rolling a 1 for damage might mean you're out -- etc. We can be flexible with it.
