The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford

Wren smiles at Ingrid and replies, "Well, if she’s friendly, we’d ask if she can help us with the dragon, as well as a missing Brother. But my question for you is… What’s he like?" Wren smirks mischievously and gestures out the window toward the blacksmith’s shop.

Cedric shrugs at Rowan's question. "It depends who you believe. When the pigs and goats started going missing--no one believed the farmers and herders at first. It seemed impossible that a dragon was to blame, but there were enough eyewitness accounts that it really does seem that the black wyrm of old is back, or some offspring of it I suppose."

Looking through the thick, imperfect glass of his window, the merchant gestures with his eyes towards the woods surrounding Brandonsford before he continues.

"And once everyone began sheltering within the walls overnight, and retreating back from the forest even during the day... the woodcutters, mushroom gathers, trappers and other outdoorsfolk all agree. These woods have changed. They're greener now, and thicker. Some says they've seen fairie rings, and others lurking goblins and silent fae hounds. Rodduk the hunter, rest his poor soul, swore he saw some ten foot giant crashing through the woods here, felling trees near this cleaning."

The man's finger lands on the map, in between the points that mark the witch of the woods and the barrow mound.

Ingrid is offering Gann a difficult-to-read, perhaps distant expression when Wren mentions the smith again. That burns the shop-owner's cheeks red, and she has to work at a response before one comes.

"I-I-I'm sure I don't know. H-he keeps to himself. We've never spoken, n-not really. Well, that's not entirely true. He says hello in the m-morning and the evening, but we've never... I've never..."

Glancing out the window, Ingrid's eyes land on the man as hammer-falls ring and he gets to work. Her blush moves to her throat, to her chest. "He's very strong. Protective. But gentle, I think."

"Oh right, I am Nessa, the tough lass is called Wren, the one with the pup is Sable and the two rough looking fellows are Rowan and Gann." Nessa explains. "Maybe we will get the chance to add a few more pairs of hands to the party. It would not go amiss, I think. In either case, I suppose I ought to find the others and discuss such matters with them. If you'd excuse me..."

She turns to leave and link up with everyone else.

Wren smirks and elbows Gann, drawing his attention to the obviously smitten herbalist pining over the blacksmith. Then she suddenly reacts with surprise and asks, "wait, what? You’ve never spoken? He works right across the way! Oooh, do you want me to talk to him for you? Oh!! Or better, I’ll talk to him but I won’t mention you directly. Instead, I’ll just ask about his interests and see if he fancies you, yeah? He will have no idea you and I spoke! Oh this is gonna be so fun!" she claps her hands with excitement and heads toward the door.

"Good to know what to watch out for. It sounds like the Warwick the Blacksmith is one to stop by before we head out."

After Rowan finishes looking at the map as well, Sable rolls it up and prepares to leave. He looks towards Rowan to see if he wants to ask anything else or purchase anything.

"Thanks for that. Giants, fae, goblins, dragon, I don't blame the locals for coming into town at night." Rowan nods to Cedric and says to Sable, "Yes, let's go find the others." and follows him to the door.

"Whoa, that's no small offer," Gann nods, considering, before encouraging Ingrid. "Wren is quite the matchmaker, I'd take her offer seriously. You should have seen her wooing the Fox girl last night, Rosalind was it? 'T'was a sight to behold." He tries to poke fun at Wren's drunken flirtations, while also trying to sell it.

And now it is Wren's turn to blush. She smiles, embarrassed, and mutters quietly, "Ugh, another drunken customer hitting on the wait staff. I was being so gross..." Then, she smiles and speaks up to Ingrid, saying, "I promise there be no mention of you. I want to go visit him for business anyway. So to be clear, though, he has no idea you fancy him, right?"

When Wren continues to call attention to Ingrid’s pinings, and then actually says she’ll go talk to the smith, the lean woman’s eyes bug in her head and she rushes to block the exit of her shop. Her voice brims with panic.

"W-what?! No! Please, don’t!"

The nervous woman’s hummingbird heartbeat eases some when Wren reveals more of her plan, and after biting her lip and thinking for a moment, Ingrid nods slightly, almost imperceptibly. "You — you won’t tell him?"

Gann vouches for his friend’s matchmaking skills, but that only causes Ingrid to turn red again. Glancing out her window, across the way, the woman wrinkles her brow in thought before saying, "Okay. Okay! J-just — just check on him, p-please. He’s been b-behaving strangely lately, hanging things hither and thither all over his shop. I-I see concern on his face, but no cause for it!"

Wren seals the deal when she mentions having other business with the smith, and promises to not mention the shopkeeper.

"Thank you," Ingrid says, stepping away from the door. "His name is Warwick. And no. He has… no idea."

Let’s bring Rowan, Nessa, and Sable into the scene when Wren and Gann go to visit Warwick. Feel free to make your intros after their next posts.

Wren smiles and reassures Ingrid once more before turning to Gann, saying, " I’m headed across the way to visit Warwick! The beefy blacksmith. You’re cordially invited! In my home village, they used to call me matchmaker Wren! Or was it… troublemaker… I forget. No matter!"

"Absolutely not!" Ingrid says quietly but somehow fiercely, absolutely terrified by the notion.

The Blacksmith's
Warwick the Smith
As Wren exits Ingrid's shop, with Gann trailing behind her, she has only to cross the not-very-busy main street in town (the only one partly cobbled) before she finds herself at the smithy.

"Morning," calls out the man at the covered forge, pausing his hammering when he sees potential patrons arriving. His shop smells of hot metal, and quite a number of tools, hinges, spikes and other iron hardware is scattered around in barrels, racks, and hanging on the wall.

Also on the walls, and the man's door, Wren and Gann see... charms? Good luck tokens, everywhere. Horseshoes, dangling rabbit's feet, four-leaf clovers, St. John's Wort, tiny iron bells--the man appears to have decked out his workspace with every lucky charm possible.
OOC:
Everyone should feel free to enter / join the scene. You can talk amongst yourselves and share what you've learned, engage with Warwick, etc.

Wren walks in, looking at all the weird charms, at the iron hardware, but also at the smith himself. She smiles and says, "Hi! We're new in town, adventurers who plan to head out into the wilds soon to see what's what. I thought I'd stop by and see what weapons and armor you might have. But first I have a question; may I ask why you have so many charms for luck? Are you...hoping to win something?"
Apr 22, 2025 6:42 pm
Nessa drops by the smithy. "Ahh, there you are." She gives the blacksmith a friendly nod. "Good morning to you as well."

She looks around, inspecting the charms, then turns to Wren. "Did you manage to procure a horse or something?" She asks with a cheeky grin.
Apr 22, 2025 8:33 pm
Gann crosses the street and mostly mills about, waving to his companions as he spots them to help gather up the group.

He gives Nessa a short bow of respect as she passes him, then idly inspects the charms adorning the outside of the shop.
OOC:
Gann has seen some superstition in his travels, does he know anything in particular about these charms?
Apr 22, 2025 9:52 pm
Sable gives a curt nod back to Gann and joins in step with the group.

"Ready to set out, but Cedric the Merchant recommended we stop by Warwick the Blacksmith if we think we'll be encountering the dragon."

He looks over the many charms around the man's workplace and presumably home. He takes note that the man is superstitious and to be thoughtful of that during the conversation. It seems Wren already has questions in mind so he stays slouching in the back of the group.
