"I wonder what we should bring to trade. What kind of good would a faun care for?" Nessa wonders aloud, clearly posing it as a question for Vivian.

"A very good question!" Vivian answers with some enthusiasm. She pauses then, looking to her visitors one after the other, then adds, "Well, it's not like I've had a lot of dealings with satyrs and fauns! Or the fey generally -- until recently, these woods were quite mundane, for the most part!"

Then, turning towards a shelf that sags with the weight of old books packed into its length, the old woman mutters to herself for a moment before picking one out, and drawing it from the shelf. Blowing dust from its worn leather cover, she presents the volume to Neesa. It is an ancient book with brass clasps, filled with what look like thick, rough, vellum pages. It looks as though it must have changed hands a hundred times, but still it holds together.

"You, dear, may borrow this. I'm afraid the author's name is lost, but it is a history of the faeries in our world. The answer to your question might lie within. Please return it when you are done with it."

The title is on the cover is in flowing script: Of the Fae and Their Secret Ways

Inside, the pages are hand-written and accompanied by marginalia capturing later notes from -- the author? Other readers? It is illustrated throughout, as well, and quite beautifully.

"Thank you. And if not perhaps we can ask the two hiding in your pond, though they’re just as like to lead us astray."

Gann leans over, craning to try and get a better look at the book.

"Oh I noticed something glinting in your pond, probably something the faerie convinced someone to part with. Do you mind if we go fishing for it before we go? Might be a weapon or something useful to us, given how they tried to trick ourselves."

OOC:
Does someone else mind carrying this tap? I’m short on space?

Also who ended up taking the glowy orb we got from Ingrid? I figured Wren the most likely recipient.

Nessa carefully examines the book, she slowly turns some pages while taking the utmost care not to damage the tome. "What a wonderful book, really..." She mumbles, instantly absorbed in its contents. She continues to flip through a few more pages, then she starts to read... something. Her initial question has already slipped her mind.

OOC:
Ingrid gave the glowing gem to Wren, yes, so she has it.
Wren smiles and thanks Vivian, saying, "Oh, excellent, Vivian! We will travel to this ancient tree and use its sleep-inducing sap to somehow put this crawling dragon to sleep. Hopefully it will be more manageable in that state! Now, we just have to figure out how to get the sap into its mouth! And oh, that book looks interesting! I wonder if it contains any songs of the fae? If so, I should like to read them. And Vivian, I shall send your regards to Ingrid. Thank you!"

Sable gives three gentle taps to the back of Kitt's head and he dutifully jumps off of the man's lap.

Sable then gets up and tries to stretch out his back as much as he can, which isn't much with the short roof and crowded space.

"Well, thank you Vivian for all of your advice and the loaning of tools. As my nephew requests, perhaps we can check the pond before we leave? Since we are doing so much for the people of Brandonsford, is there a favor you would like in return as well?"
OOC:
Sable is full up as well unless someone else wants to hold the big bag of silver from Warwick the Blacksmith and then Sable can take the tap for the sap instead. :P

Vivian smiles graciously as her guests prepare to leave, collecting their mugs, patting their arms, and wishing them luck. When there's talk of the pond, she sighs.

"Oh, those bad nixies! You're welcome to whatever you can find in that pond, and don't let them say otherwise! I don't imagine there's much more in there than rusted scraps, but you're welcome to them!"

"Wait we are going already? Mhe... fine... " Nessa grumbles. She is about to add the book to her pack when she pauses to look at it again.

"I feel a bit bad just borrowing something like this." She says, kind of sheepishly. "Especially since there is no guarantee that we will be able to return it intact. Maybe even we will not return at all. You never know."
She produces a small book and hands it to Vivian. It is crudely bound in leather and cheaply made, the paper quality is questionable. It also looks like it has spent a lot of time being tumbled around in a backpack. "Please accept this as collateral. It's a bunch of stories I wrote down over the years. I don't even know why, I know them all by heart anyways. Guess you could call it a hobby. But maybe you will find them interesting. If you can get past my handwriting that is."

She continues a after a short pause: "Also if we really do not return, I would feel a bit better leaving it with you, I guess..."

Wren smiles at Nessa's thoughtfulness and suddenly wishes she had sung another song as a thank you. But the road calls, so she takes her leave and heads outside to see about these Nixies.

Nessa lingers behind when her companions begin to take their leave. Vivian, who was just scratching Kittridge behind the ears to thank him for not peeing inside, raises her eyebrows and gives the young woman a mild, warm look as the slim blonde makes conversation, and an offering of her own.

"Well now, what’s this?" the witch says regarding the book Nessa hands over. The elfin girl sees that Vivian’s hands are old and gnarled, but strong and deft as she opens the book and leafs through it a bit. "Hm! Are you a poet? Oh no, I see… a storyteller! Wonderful!"

Reading while she talks, the wisened woman goes on, slightly distracted by the words on the page. "Your handwriting… is gorgeous. You’ve just given a lonely old woman company for cold nights by the warm fire! And don’t you worry about that book of Fae — the thing will find its way back to me, one way or another."

When Nessa’s words and mood turn a bit glum, Vivian closes the book and rubs the storyteller on the arm reassuringly. "Now dear — you’ll be alright. You’re smarter than any overgrown lizard, and your friends are experienced hunters and soldiers. Take care and I’ll see you back here again… we can discuss some of what you — what you find in that book."

Nessa is last to leave, and when she is about to also make for the door, Vivian holds up one finger and squints one eye. She then proceeds to root around on one of her overflowing workbenches, making a satisfied sound when she finds what she was looking for: a twisting piece of slender, pale wood. A wand!

"This, my dear, is the Briar Wand of Whispered Bloom. Take it! It may aid you on this dangerous quest. Have it in your hand when you… explore what you find in the book."
OOC:
Exploring the Fae book, looking for info on the fauns or anything else, takes a full watch. (Each day has three watches in Cairn, Morning, Afternoon, and Night.)
Jun 6, 2025 5:51 pm
Nessa nods with gratitude as she takes the wand. "Thank you, I will make sure to do just that."

She casts one last glimpse back at the witch before rushing to catch up with her companions.

Out front of Vivian’s cottage, Gann, Sable and Wren have gathered near the pool. There is no sign of the creatures that the witch called nixies; the waters are still but quite reflective, making it difficult to see exactly what treasures they hide. Certainly there are interesting things in the pool… along with what look like heavily corroded blades and axe heads, objects glimmer slightly in the sunlight. Coins? Jewels? Hard to say.
OOC:
What’s the plan? Nessa, feel free to join here after a post or two.
Jun 7, 2025 3:37 am
Wren says, "Never in my life on the river have been afraid to enter the water. I won’t start now." She removes her armor, sets aside her weapon and pack, and jumps in, swimming down to search the bottom.
Jun 7, 2025 11:31 am
Gann also doffs his gear, except for the brace of throwing knives that he keeps tied around his upper arm. He then wades in but stays near the edge, watching Wren’s progress and standing by to support as needed.
Jun 7, 2025 1:10 pm
Sable will take out the tarp with the spike and cord to try and cobble together a make-shift net to grab what he can at the bottom and haul it up. He will depend on Wren and Gann to grab the finer items.

By the time Nessa exists the house and rejoins her companions by the pool, Wren, Gann and Sable have stripped to their skivvies and are entering the pool. The Marchguard and the prowler are more wary in their approach than the rill runner -- who just jumps in!

As the cool waters close over Wren's head, she immediately sees that the pool is deeper than it appeared. A trick of the light or some disorienting Fae magic... it is almost ten feet deep. But it is clear, and the woman sees quite a collection of objects. Indeed, old and rusted weapons and armor, the results surely of nixie shenanigans. When she swims down closer, the tattooed woman spies some things of value: a good number of golden, shimmering coins... a set of silver bangles set with stones of some sort, and a gilded scabbard set with carnelians arranged like blossoming flowers.
OOC:
Holding your breath, Wren. Take one Fatigue, please. (Tick the box in an inventory slot that is currently available.)

Are Sable and Gann going in? Gann, there *is* a shallower bit on the side so your original plan is fine.
