The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford

"If we're all so keen, maybe we do two up here and two down below. Two watches ought to do it, so someone will be awake both sides until dawn."

Gann then looks to Quinn with a disapproving look, but doesn't pile on to what the others have already said so clearly.
OOC:
This chair with crumbs, is it near the trapdoor, or down in the cellar? I'm confused about what we've been inspecting.

OOC:
The kitchen is not overly large. There’s a back door that’s locked with a large deadbolt, a larder, a pantry, cabinets and crate, a counter — but no windows. The trap door is set into the floor near a wall that is one edge of the building, and the wooden chair is kind of scooted out of the way so as not to be underfoot.

The crumbs are unlikely to be from vermin, as they are too tasty for rodents and such to leave behind: cheese, bread, perhaps pie crust.
Innkeeper Quinn
"Do you want to see the cellar?!" Quinn asks, fetching the lock’s key from around his neck. He has the padlock open quickly, then is lifting the heavy trap door wide. "Oil lamps keep it lit so you won’t be climbing down into the dark!"

Indeed, there appears to be light in the cellar, which can be reached by descending a rickety-looking ladder. The place looks both expansive and packed with crates, furniture, and supples. On one side of the room, anyone who pokes their head down can see barrels of wine, casks of ale and jugs of beer. It does not look like a comfortable place to spend the night…

Wren shrugs and says, "I'll sit up here, I guess. Just holler if you need us to come down." She finds a spot on the floor near the cellar entrance and looks at Quinn. She says, "Hey, least you can do is provide a blanket at pillow, yeah?"

Innkeeper Quinn
"I can get some bedding, some blankets!" Quinn says to Wren excitedly. The man is about to head out of the kitchen, then stops.

"Say! Say now! If you all just spread all over, won't the thief -- I'm sure it's Bentley or someone he's put up to it, by the way -- won't the thief just call off the caper for the night? And return when you're all gone?!"
Mar 20, 2025 4:30 am
Wren stops, too, and realizes the man has a point. "Yeah I guess that makes sense. You have a pantry or cupboard I can rest comfortably in, something out of sight? Maybe under a table with a tablecloth hiding me?"
Mar 20, 2025 7:30 am
Gann heads down, not surprised that it looks like an awful place to sleep. He finds a spot not easily visible from the trap door and settles in.

"Ill take first watch, you get some rest."
OOC:
Speaking to whomever comes down with him, presumably Sable and the pup.
Mar 20, 2025 12:28 pm
Kittridge lazily sniffed about, but didn't find anything of interest and crawls back into Sable's arms. He yawns, still sleepy from his belly full of treats from the Clumsy Fox. At least he wouldn't be making trouble during the night. He nods at the others, letting them decide the best plan above.

Sable gathers Kittridge up and sweeps his frumpy cloak around him as he looks for the darkest corner in the cellar. Even leaning would be fine, he is used to it. This is why he has a big frumpy cloak to rest on and blend into the darkness. The man gives an appraising look over Gann considering his flush of drink from earlier, but the thief probably would came later in the night anyway.

"Tap out the signal when we are ready to switch then."

"So instead of paying in gold you pay in promises of stale ale. Normally I would consider this to be fraud, but since the mystery is rather intriguing, I will forgive you for now." Nessa Announces with some semblance of gravitas.

"I suppose I will hide up here with Wren. Intriguing or not, no mystery is worth lingering in that damp hole."

OOC:
Looks like the plan is taking shape. @squid , what do you plan on having Rowan do?
Mar 21, 2025 1:27 pm
Considering Quinn's point about being conspicuous, Rowan tries to think of other ways to be useful in this stakeout without overcrowding the area where Wren and Nessa are setting up their lookout.

"Quinn, is there somewhere outside that would give a good vantage point on the building but still be out of site? I'm wondering if the person who's doing this is coming from the outside, I may be able to see who it is and where they're coming from. If they go in, then I could be on the outside to block their exit if they run."

Outraged Innkeeper Quinn
Quinn looks wounded by Nessa's words as Sable and his nephew climb down into the downright chilly, damp cellar. It's a big space with a lots of crates and supplies and junk. There are plenty of places to hide, and few to sleep or rest comfortably.

"Fraud!? Fraud! Oh, oh girl with acid tongue! With flames for breath! Don't say such a thing! My ale is stale because I have none left on account of that rat across the way!"

Innkeeper Quinn
When Rowan asks about keeping watch outside, the innkeeper recovers from the dagger to his heart.

"Well -- yes! Great idea, provided you also stay out of sight! The front porch overlooks the street and we could drape a blanket over two chairs that you could hide beneath! Or -- or! Out back, there's the privy! It's a double, so plenty of room and you could keep watch on the rear of the place!"
Mar 22, 2025 1:10 am
Rowan wrinkles his nose at the idea of the privy, however, thieves probably don't walk in the front door, so he decides to check the privy.
OOC:
Rowan will survey the area and if there's a hidden place which isn't inside the privy, he'll take that position instead.
Mar 22, 2025 2:54 am
With some semblance of a plan, the troupe hunkers down for the night. Nessa and Wren in the kitchen once Quinn provides some blankets, Sable, Kittridge and Gann in the basement, and Rowan out back. The innkeeper expresses his thanks again and lets everyone know there will be a delicious breakfast in the morning.
OOC:
Okay!

Wren and Nessa, are you both planning to hide / be out of sight in the kitchen? It's not easy -- there are really two decent hiding places: in the pantry (which has a door that closes), and under the table which you could equip with a long tablecloth. You can split up or both go to one location. Wren, if you try to stay away, give me a Willpower Save, please. (All that drink!)

Sable and his pup are in a dark, out of the way corner in the cellar -- which you lock from upstairs? Gann, are you out in the open down there or also hiding? If you're going to take a shift, do you think you had enough to drink to also need a Willpower Save? Wren was described as pretty glowing, but not Gann so much.

Rowan, roll a Die of Fate. That's a d6 where a low result ain't great and a high result is. On a 1-3 you don't find a better hiding spot than the privy... on a 4-6 you do. Some bushes, a woodpile, etc.

OOC:
please roll high!

Wren takes up a position beneath the table, concealed by a tablecloth, with a pillow under her head and a blanket to keep her warm. She was nearly asleep in the chair out in the common room, so it isn't hard for her to rest her eyes here either. Indeed, the challenge is not resisting more drink so much as it is staying awake, or at least sleeping quietly!

EDIT: oops. Whelp...

Yeah, she's sawing wood! And Rowan had found a less-smelly hiding spot!

OOC:
Yeah Gann had enough with the priest to get wobbly, but it’s been hours since then. He was deliberately trying to sober up while at the tavern since he had the idea to stay in the cellar.

Gann will have picked a spot that isn’t visible from upstairs, but isn’t trying too much to hide. The idea is that someone would have to be all the way in the cellar before they had a chance of seeing him. At which point his half-baked plan is to tackle whoever it is.
Mar 22, 2025 8:41 am
By process of elimination Nessa picks the pantry. She uses the blankets provided by Quinn to build a comfy little nest in there and closes the door.

"This isn't too bad. I don't want to jinx myself but I could get used to sleeping like this." When her attempt at small talk does not spark any reply she giggles: "Guess the old fraud was right, staying awake is difficult."

OOC:
Is the trap door door re-padlocked, once Gann and Sable are down below?
Mar 22, 2025 9:16 pm
OOC:
That’s what we requested, but I can’t speak for whether those above actually did it.
