Around Town
Eric the Town Reeve
"Good, good," the short, heavy-set man with the lampchops says to Nessa when she reveals that she is one of the strangers recently come to town.

"And a rest would be grand, lass, just grand! But I am Eric, Reeve and Baliff of Brandonsford... and I'm afraid I will not truly rest until we are rid of this accursed dragon! The business I have is that of payment! Should you slay the beast, there is a reward! One thousand golden coins from the towns' treasury--virtually emptying its coffers!"

Ingrid is looking out her window, at something across the street when Wren barges in and startles the woman.

"A-Ahoy!" she says beck before Gann steps up to engage with the woman. She blinks nervously at the mention of the witch and the Marchguard (these things often do not go well together, witches and soldiers), and she still hasn't formed a full sentence when Wren cuts in again. Finally, the slender woman wrings her hands and responds.

"I--well. Yes. And hello. I'm Ingrid. There's a dragon marauding in these woods, it's true! A most... ferocious one. What else do you want to know about the surrounding area? Vivian isn't... a witch, at least as you would think. She's a wise woman who knows much about the spirit world. She--she might be the one to ask about the dragon!"

Ingrid is socially awkward, that much is clear. But she is also distracted by something outside, and almost as an afterthought she gestures to the shelves that contain her wards.

"F-forgive me. Might I interest you in... essence of Wolfsbane? Witch powder... or mandrake root tea?"

Picking up a piece of what looks like amber from her counter, the shop-owner shakes it, causing it to glow beautifully. Underground, it would light a tunnel with east. "Or something a bit more... magical? Ancient elfin spellweaves light this firelight citrine..."

The Mercantilist's
Cedric the Merchant
"My name is Cedric," the merchant says, "and I do have such a map. Just need to mind where I put it."

As he sorts through a collection of scrolls and old map cases behind his counter, the man keeps one eye on Sable. "And you two gentlemen are...? Ah! Here it is. Three gold for the map you seek. An accurate representation of Brandonsford and its surrounds."
OOC:
Sable sees that the shop is equipped with dried rations and various adventuring supplies. Several shelves are empty of goods.

Wren nods and says, "Thank you, Ingrid. How much for the, uh, glowing citrine?" As she speaks, she casually moves around next to Ingrid to see what she's looking at or distracted by.
Apr 18, 2025 1:15 am
"Hmm, looks like you've been getting good business? A lot of dragon hunters passing through here lately? Or are the empty shelves due to the missing caravan Quinn has told us about?"

If he is allowed, Sable takes a quick look at the map to see if it seems to be accurate from what they have seen of the area so far.

"Three gold seems like a lot when Quinn charged us only 8 silvers for a room and meal. What makes this map so special?"
Apr 18, 2025 3:59 am
Gann happily lets Wren take the lead with the conversation, seeing the discomfort Ingrid had when approached by two people at once. He idly browses near the entrance, trying to work out who or what she’s preoccupied with.
Apr 18, 2025 6:00 am
"That is a rather princely sum you offer, it will certainly keep everyone motivated." Nessa remarks. She does not really care for the gold, but humors Eric none the less.
"I assume you can't offer much advice on how to actually slay the creature, or you would have taken care of it already. Have you at least seen it for yourself though? It is a bit difficult to get a reliable account of it and while I enjoy spinning a good tale, something more concrete would be appreciated when dealing with a dragon."

Ingrid seems to relax a touch as Wren engages with her and Gann backs off a bit, giving the two women some room to converse.

"Oh... the magical citrine is the rarest, most incredible thing in my shop. And the most expensive. I've had offers of two hundred gold I did not take. I've never seen it's like."

Engaged with her customer now, it seems as though the proprietress is purposefully not looking where she was before: directly across the street, at the blacksmith's shop. A glance out the window or open door at the smithy reveals that the strong-limbed craftsman has moved outside his shop, and that he is busy tending to something on his door. He is perhaps affixing something to it?

At the Mercantilist's
Cedric the Merchant
Cedic smiles and shakes his head at the notion of a lot of monster hunters having come though town.

"I'm afraid not! It's our own folk who have fought and hunted that thing, and paid in blood! Our best huntsmen fought the beast and couldn't even wound the thing, and only one of them made it home!"

Unfolding the map, he adds, "My bare shelves, aye, are from no shipments arriving! I don't know how they got word of our dragon trouble, but I have a feeling the wagon full of supplies that was supposed to come never even set out!"

On the subject of adventurers and the value of the map, the gregarious man says, "You might find help you can hire at Barclay's--at the Clumsy Fox Tavern. The map costs what it does because it's worth that. And Quinn's rooms are a poor measure! That man waters his wine, and I bet pisses in his ale--from the taste of it!"

Spreading the thick parchment on the table, Cedric reveals a map with some placenames that indeed seem accurate.

"Fine, I'll take two gold," the mustachioed man says. "And return that to you in full if and when you kill this cursed dragon!"

Eric the Town Reeve
Eric nods at the notion of the reward being a large one. "It is at that, princely! But this monster is ferocious and deadly! Those gambling on the reward are risking life and limb!"

When Nessa asks after advice on dragon-slaying, the Reeve blanches. "Miss, I've no experience with that, and nor does anyone else in Brandonsford! We're a long way from our roots of being a town of heroes. I've never seen the beast, but have it on good authority that it does not fly, and spits a kind of acid! If you want a first-hand account of the beast, you should talk to George, the hunter. He survived an encounter with the creature that claimed the lives of a half-dozen good men!"

The Herbalist's Shop
"So this Vivian," Gann begins, "if we were to go visit her, she wouldn't be dangerous? Anything we could do to let her know we're friendly? If she's living outside the walls with everything's been going on, I'm sure she'd have some tales to tell."
Apr 18, 2025 7:56 pm
Nessa nods along: "Right, the old huntsman, we have already spoken to him. A dire state that one ended up in. I guess we are on our own from this point onward then?"
Apr 19, 2025 1:31 am
Sable narrows his eyes, but relinquishes the two gold. There were some interesting spots on the map he wanted to check out.

"All right, it's a deal if we end up encountering that dragon. Do you recommend we take anything on our trek out then?"
Apr 19, 2025 4:42 am
Hearing the amount Ingrid has in mind for the gem, Wren looks surprised. "Oh, dear, no. If I had that kind of money, I wouldn't be ferrying strange men up and down the river to survive..." She looks out the window at the blacksmith and smiles, commenting, "My, you have such lovely scenery here... I bet he knows how to get a forge hot..."
Apr 19, 2025 6:38 pm
Gann hears Wren cut him off part way through his direct line of questioning, and realises the woman is much better than he is at this. He chooses to shut up for real this time, looking at the goods in the shop and trying not to smile at her comment on the "scenery".
