The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford

Brother Dirk
Stones, vegetables, and small handfuls of mud come flinging in the window as Sable stops and frees the young, bearded captive--who indeed wears monk robes, and who is jubilant until he sees the massive giant towering over them!

"Thank you, thank you! I'm Brother Dirk and I--oh! Ah! We need to run, he was intending to cook and eat me!"

The Giant
"NO NO NO!" bellows the giant as Wren runs and escapes, the brother is freed, and a potato bounces off his head.

"LEAVE MY DINNER! THIEF! DINNER THIEF! YOU WILL BE... DESSERT!"
OOC:
Starting Combat Rounds. (This doesn't mean there has to be a fight, but just that we're moving to rounds.)
Sable, please make a DEX Save to see if you act before or after the giant in this first round. For round two onward, the PCs will act first.

Sable absolutely agrees with the Brother they need to get out of there and begins to pull the potentially disoriented man to the door…

With Nessa scurrying into place and positioning her foliage camouflage just so, and with Gann helping Wren out from beneath the door, Sable and Brother Dirk face down an angry giant. Three enormous strides carry the brute to the door, cutting off their intended means of escape!

"POT NEARLY READY! BUBBLING GOOD! GOBLIN STEW TONIGHT!"

Crouching a bit, the grinning giant prepares to intercept any 'goblin' brave or foolish enough to try and get past him!
OOC:
Slipping past the giant will require a DEX Save, if that's your intended course of action. Also, remember that the door requires a Die of Fate roll to pass if you're wearing armor, or are hefty. (So both Dirk and Sable will need one.)

Some things in the room of interest, all at 16' giant scale: the table and chair, a straw mattress, a pile of material that might be a cloak, and an empty bucket (barrel-sized to you).

OOC:
Also, let me break this down more clearly, as you're about to finish Round 1 and move to Round 2...
Round 1
Giant, Sable, Dirk

Round 2
Sable, Dirk, Giant
OOC:
So technically -- you're taking two turns in a row, Sable.
Jul 5, 2025 6:27 pm
OOC:
Can they get to the window? And would they still need to roll if we threw a rope over the window sill and held it on our end?
Jul 5, 2025 7:57 pm
OOC:
How far exactly is the edge of the forest from the cabin? How much can Nessa see/hear from here?
Jul 6, 2025 3:49 am
OOC:
When do the folks outside act in the order? I assume we’d join in during round 2?
Jul 6, 2025 8:37 pm
As Sable grabs the back of the Brother's hood, the giant leaps past him and the rescued to block their way out. Between his legs, he can see Wren is able to wriggle back out at least.
OOC:
Just to confirm, it is a straw mattress on the ground, not on a bed frame?
Jul 7, 2025 5:17 am
OOC:
Let's make it interesting. Die of Fate, on a 1-3, the straw bed is a pile of straw! 4-6, there's an actual bedframe (to hide under and such).

Also, let me be a little more clear about the init order, and include everyone...
Round 1
Wren runs back to the door, slides under
Gann helps Wren out
Nessa finishing hurling stuff to distract the giant and runs for the woods
The Giant moved to block the door as a means of escape -- trying to slip past him required a DEX Save.
Sable and Dirk have yet to act

Round 2
Who Party Goes in Any Order
The Giant goes
OOC:
Answering other questions:
-Sable and Dirk can get to the window. One could boost the other up and out, but the second one out will need a DEX Save. A secured rope would negate the need to roll.
-Let's call Nessa 50' from the cottage, near the edge of where the trees pick back up again.
-Folks outside will indeed join in Round 2, see above.

The bed does have a crude bedframe.

Thank you for the rolls Warden!
Sable quickly assesses the success of moving past the Giant with the Brother. Considering how hefty the man was, he doubted the man was going to do well running around grasping sausage fingers and squeezing under the door. He also acknowledged his own poor night of sleep making this venture more dangerous than it should have been. Instead of pulling Brother Dirk to the door, he instead pulls him to the crude bed frame to make it more difficult for the giant to reach them. There, he will plot their next move as he hopes his companions have some ideas for a better exit for the two of them. Perhaps the window if he could boost the man up?

If they are agile enough, he will grab the Brother's quarterstaff and pack on the way to the bed frame, pushing the Brother ahead of him as he does so. Then, once under the bed, they will move to the back and the side closest to the window.

Round 1
Wren runs back to the door, slides under
Gann helps Wren out
Nessa finishing hurling stuff to distract the giant and runs for the woods
The Giant moved to block the door as a means of escape -- trying to slip past him required a DEX Save.
Sable and Dirk run for the hopefully safe haven of "under the bed"

Round 2
Who Party Goes in Any Order <<<
The Giant’s Turn
OOC:
Okay, Round 1 complete! The party can now act in any order. Sounds like Sable is waiting to see what else others do in this span of seconds.
Jul 8, 2025 4:24 am
Now that she has squeezed back under the door, she bends down and peeks through, assessing the situation. She nods and turns to the others, saying, "Does anyone have a rope? We could throw one end over the sill and anchor the other, to help them climb out. I don't have one..." She looks in her pack for something useful, but finds nothing. She considers the citrine, but hopes to use that only in a dire emergency. If they can get a rope, this won't count as one! So she looks to the others for a rope as she runs to the area beneath the window and offers to anchor one end.

OOC:
Mind describing the porch the same way you did inside?
"No rope, sorry…" Gann says to Wren as she rushes past him. He quickly glances around the porch. This close to the river, maybe the giant has some fishing line, or something else they could use.
Jul 8, 2025 5:26 am
Nessa remains hidden in her spot. "Lure him outside. We will have an easier time dealing with him out in the open." She calls from the edge of the forest.

OOC:
Outside of the cottage, note the locations of the stumps, woodpiles, bloody mash of bones, latrine, big tools (club, hoe, pokey stick). Each larger square is 10'.

Just let me know if you have further questions.

After the trio outside settle their final acts, we'll have Sable up again -- then the Giant.
Jul 8, 2025 8:14 am
OOC:
Gann would have stayed by the door, so I assume he’s still over there.
Not seeing anything obvious to use as a rope, Gann steps off to the right of the door, opposite of the way that Wren went. He takes in a big breath and yells out.

"Ho there good ser! I’m here with the Marchguard hunting goblins and other menaces. My apologies for the men I sent inside, we were checking for goblins and didn’t want to wake you. Can we talk this out, good ser?"

He then catches his breath, hoping this will either work or buy time at least.

OOC:
If there's time to disassemble, Sable used his cord and spike to make the trap outside the front door. Or lure the giant out to trip over the trap.

Was Sable able to grab the quarterstaff and Brother's pack on the way under the bed?

Good reminder on the trap! I think Gann would still prefer to try and lure rather than try to disassemble under pressure.
