Even at a 45° slope down, flinging a card across half a building is no mean feat, but Herman manages it.

Fortune Roll - (1d6)

There is a flash of light and the card is disintegrated.

Fiona's eyebrows arch with surprise and she says, "Hey that's a cool trick!", acknowledging that she his in fact impressed. "There seems to be more to you than I thought.. Huh."

After a moment of self-awareness, she sets all that aside and returns to business. She says, "OK, so, leaving the elevator seems dangerous. Let me check something..." She turns to Arthur and says, "Uh, hold onto the belt on my jumpsuit, yes?"

Then she leans out of the elevator door, swinging her scanner to and fro. Does it seem as if there is anything interesting elsewhere on this level? And do the roots that filled the elevator shaft continue to higher levels?

Ohhh lets definitely not go that way!

Arthur is gripping the belt of Fiona's jumpsuit. With a bit of anxiety.

The corridor looked fine, the card was safe enough till it tried to exit out the window to the real world... but getting fried by whatever energy field is there is only slightly worse than the fall to the asphalt many stories below. Going out the windows below would have been disastrous anyway. The cave systems were outside the frame of the building, though, so who knows.

From the underside of the elevator/stairs column there is not much for the scanner to see. Last time, the interesting readings were coming from above.

The beanstalk is getting thin, but it still snakes its way further up the elevator shaft.

What do you do?

So far, it seems all the interesting stuff is outside the building (wherever that might be). So I guess we go up and see if we can find a better entry point to the "outside"? (((and possible butterfly dudes)))

Fiona grunts in frustration as her scanner picks up little of use. She nods at Herman's suggestion and says, "Yeah, if we can find a safer exit one floor up, that'd work."

She begins to climb up.
OOC:
I figure we can go up another floor, maybe two, and if we can't find a safer way to exit, Fiona will want to try the dangerous way!

Two floors up seems to be a machine room!!?? There are lathes and drills and generators keeping them running, but no people nor any sign of them. What on earth would such a place be doing halfway up a skyscraper of offices?

Like the two floors below, you can see the street outside through the lower windows, but these are not broken, everything on this floor seems to have been bolted down. There is plenty to climb on, but some of the machines look like they could take your arm off.

The windows above are all intact, and show nothing by blue sky, but the scanner gives 'traces of weirdness'. The glass may be blocking the bulk of the weirdness, though, you know for sure it is not letting though any UV light, for instance.

What do you do?

this room is screaming fiona

Fiona's face is 100% kid-in-a-candy-store vibes. She says, "Ok this is more like it! I wonder if this is a secret R&D workshop or something? Ooh look..." She begins to try to pick her way out of the elevator and toward whatever seems weirdest.

What do you find? What seems weirdest?

What do you do?

Fiona scrambles and clambers around the strange area. "This place looks like a high end makers' lab. They got top of the line 3D scanners and printers, a fill kit of electrical and computer supplies, tools, and equipment, and so on. A robotics lab, maybe? Oh wait... what's this?"

She crawls over to a suites of machines against one wall, filled with glass cylinders, microscopes, flasks, and vials. An electron microscope dominates the setup. She looks it over, stunned. "What are they doing with this?" She turns to look at the others. "Do you know what this is?? This is a CRISPR-CAS9 set up. For gene splicing. You know, for sampling chromosomal material from one DNA string and splicing it into another DNA string. They were making hybrids and chimeras with this stuff."

Quickly looking over the vial labels, she adds, "Oh my god some of these samples are from Breaks!"
Apr 19, 2025 8:30 pm
Arthur has carefully followed Fiona among the tilted machines on the industrial grey carpeted incline of the floor. " it's weird they don't have a clean room set up. Not even surgical grade. Do genetic experiments need some kind of precautions? I feel like otherwise you might get roachman when you were trying for butterfly girl. Or man," he adds, thinking of the winged humanoid a few floors down.
Apr 20, 2025 2:40 pm
She shrugs and says, "Well, this machine here has a clean space inside of it. See? The machinery and samples are entirely self-contained. It's like... a portable gene lab/clean room! Amazing. But, eh, that doesn't mean it was operated correctly, or anything else. Oh..."

She stops mid-sentence and points to the far side of the machine, where a loose fire extinguisher lies on the ground against the base of the machine. She points to a visible crack in the containing glass and says, "Whelp, if it was a clean space, it ain't any more. Let's hope they weren't working on any bioweapons, because we may be exposed to whatever in there..."
Apr 20, 2025 7:10 pm
Hmmm, so maybe they were breeding butterfly dudes in here?
Apr 20, 2025 9:11 pm
Fiona shrugs, but looks skeptical. "Well, I doubt they were breeding the creatures we’ve seen. But when the break happened, it might have combined the office workers with this other genetic material. The breaks tend to remix the existing matter and in this case it mixed in this stuff. Maybe?"
