Arthur looks at Fiona with a very blank expression. "Sure thing, doc. You want to head up or do more here?"

Onward and upward?
Apr 26, 2025 3:54 am
Out from under the cover of the elevator shaft, the light that falls upon the scanner has that same 'strange' element to it that was observed a few floors below. It is not clear what this is, the scanner would need to be upgraded or adjusted to know more, and it could be an aspect of the glass of the window meant to 'filter out UV', but, despite the clear blue sky, your readings suggest the world above you is as different to your own as the one below, with the mushrooms and the healing salamanders and the giant centipedes. Just less dark.

The windows here are intact. You don't see any butterflies.

So this another mostly empty floor where all the cublicals have fallen to the bottom of the box?
Apr 27, 2025 3:53 am
Fiona scratches her head as she studies her scanner. She says, "Boys, I wanna get some readings of the air outside this building, up at this height. How do you think we could do that? Crawl over to those windows and open one, or break it? Go all the way up and look for roof access? I don't care either way, though I am guessing we will wanna check the roof regardless, you know, for butterfly-guys... uh, unless it's a lot further. This is way worse than a stair master."

You are still in the 'machine room' or 'laboratory' when you check the scanner. The bolted-down machines provide an easy route out from under the shelter of the central elevator area.

A dozen floors above the ground there is little chance that the windows will be openable —unless there is a balcony, which, so far, you have not seen. The 'roof' —which will also be a 45° angle— is still many floors upward, you are less than halfway. The windows are thick and strong, strong enough for you to walk on at these angles, but a large tool or some bullets should be able to break them. Or you can continue to climb and see if any later floors offer a way out, topside.

Fiona sticks her head back into the elevator shaft and looks upwards. She shakes her head in the negative and says, "Nah, scratch the roof. I'd probably slide off anyways. Can one of you boys shoot a window maybe?"

OOC:
There seems to be little risk involved in doing this.
Arthur aims at the large window above us, and pops a couple of caps at it.

Fiona ducks for cover to avoid falling glass!

OOC:
Based on what I've seen happen in labs, when a bullet strikes a thick pane of glass you don't get shards. It just makes a nice round hole with "ripples" around the hole. Arthur and company will shortly learn this I expect.

The fast, little, bullets plink as they pass through the window, spiderweb cracks spread from each hole, weakening the glass. A good whack with a wrench should shatter it into tiny shards, most of which should be too small to pose a real risk.

Herman, thinking hard and squinting, Wait, when we did this with a playing card it got zapped. But bullets are plinking?!?!?

It is hard to see what happened to the bullets after they hit the window. But there is possibly a difference between where they were going to, you had no problem leaving the building perimeter into the caves, and they were definitely 'outside'.

Fiona peeks out from her cover and says. "Oh. OK then. Lemme try to get up there and take a sample..."

She begins to scramble up to the window, using the fixtures and other materials that clutter the area here to support her.

Herman is gonna stand back and watch Fiona take care of business - since has no better ideas right now.

A lathe near the window offers a precarious perch from which you can almost reach the window. The items on the low-side have slid off, but, on the high-side there are a few tools and a shaft of metal that was being worked on, basically now a steel pole a few feet thick and close to 11 feet long.

Apr 29, 2025 1:36 pm
Fiona balances herself on the perch and takes out her handy dandy duct tape. She carefully wraps her scanner around one end of the poll, making sure not to coverup or block any of the receptive ports, and programs the scanner to do a wide spectrum scan and analysis, on loop. She then carefully extends the poll, bringing the scanner to the hole in the window. She does not extend the poll out the hole, however!
OOC:
Of course she has duct tape, silly! What maker doesn't go out without it? Or electrical tape, or gorilla glue, or something!?

Herman is tantalized by Fiona's resourcefulness and can't wait to hear what she discovers.

The bullet holes are bullet holes, no larger around than your little finger. It takes some finagling to align the scanner's sensors with the tiny holes, and the leverage of the long pole makes it incredibly heavy, you can't hold it there long.

What you see when you pull it back is fascinating: It is like it is another world out there. The air seems breathable, though it is likely to smell funny and may not be good for your in the long-term, and the light ... well the light is that of another sun!

You can't say for sure that you would need hazmat suits, they are a pain in the proverbial and bringing them along is so often a waste of space, but you would definitely want sunscreen, to protect your skin from the harsh light.

What do you do?
OOC:
I think you all still have 'load' available in your Packs. If you want to check off Hazmat Gear you can say you brought that (though I still think 1 checkmark would not allow for very protective suits, they will be flimsy).

Sunscreen is probably free.
