The Edo period, an unceasing regime of feudal conflict between regional daimyos under the overarching dominion of the Tokugawa shogunate, came to its end in the Boshin civil war, where imperial loyalists sought to return the throne to the rightful emperor. Had history run its true course, the revolution would have henceforth been known as the Meiji Restoration.

On the day of the emperor's ascension to the throne, a total eclipse took hold, blanketing the entire island. The people gazed upwards in awe, revering its rare beauty, as the heavens donned a cloak of dusk. Temples filled with prayers, the streets with festivals, believing this to be a sign of divine spectacle affirming the mandate of the Tenno, the son of heaven. But as days turned to weeks, and weeks into endless cycles, the novel waned into despair. The celestial event, once celebrated, now hung over them - a spectre refusing to depart, its dark veil an unending curse.

Now the name of the island, Nihon, the Land of the Rising Sun, has likewise been forgotten. It is pronounced in muttered breath, Kage no Shima, the Island of Shadows, whose air is thick with the stench of blood and the promise of violence.

Game System: We are playing Rōnin, an OSR-style game based on the popular Mörk Borg system, itself an apocalyptic fantasy setting rules-light system.

Themes: survival, violence, war, dystopia, but also honour, adventure and sacrifice. The world is forgotten, revisionist, otherworldly, and the mood is dark, both in the literal and figurative senses.

Character Creation: I am looking for 4-6 players, to choose from various archetypal options in the core book.

Game Commitment and Post Frequency: I'd like to play through the introductory adventure in the core book as the first chapter, an exploration adventure. From there we can decide if we want to experience the more complex socio-political tensions brought about by the dark descent post-eclipse. We should be able to manage 1 post a day to 1 post every 2 days, but that entirely depends on what the players can reasonably commit to.

Specialised Resources: I ask that you also join a Discord channel for chat purposes; I have found it to add well to the PbP experience here. But this is not strictly necessary. Other than that, everything else will be on Gamers Plane.

Player Experience: None needed. This game is specifically open as part of the initiative to welcome new players on GP. Player selection will be in order of - gamers new to this platform, new to Mörk Borg, new to OSR, and then everyone else.

GM Experience: I'm a Mörk Borg enthusiast, and have run MB, Cy_Borg, 'Space Borg' aka Death in Space, here. I'm also a forever GM (and a committed player) across many games and systems. I tend towards detailed setting creation with multiple plots and options personalised to character-driven narratives, but will behave myself for the introductory part of this adventure at least.

How to Apply: Here! It's not first-time-first-served, no rush. I retain discretion to put together what I think might be the most optimal player mix.

Welcome All: This game is explicitly welcomes friends from all groups.

The First Adventure:

in thicket borne dusk
forgotten blood rains over
the crimson jungle

I'm very tempted to join this, but I don't know if time will allow it for me at this point.
For now I will hang back and let others sign up and put myself on the "maybe"-list.

How long do you expect this first adventure to take?
Do I need to own the book to be able to play?

I was just reading about this setting yesterday. I'm a big fan of Mork Borg derived games and Medieval Japan. Count me in.

Sounds like my jam* Love the Heavy Metal meets Shinto Horror vibe.
I don't have the game material yet. I'm sure I can pick up & play quickly.
Do you have a recommendation of where to get it? I see a few sites online.

Great i'd like to join please if its possible, and apply. Thanks.
I would be honored to play with all of you.

I'd like to learn the system, as i may run my own eastern asian feudal campain later, and not sure what to use yet as a system.

For those who like folklore of Japan, here's a nice small book i read last week.

A man chooses death
In the shadow of the leaves
His life finds purpose

Bonus points for haiku! It's an actual mechanic in the game.

This is very nice, is it from or inspired by Hagakure?

We float through darkness
Alight on sacred branches
Death is transition

Adding my name to the hat!

Please lets consider something less grim. :)

Soft cry, new warm breath,
Tiny hand grips tightly,
World blooms, love takes root.

Yes. A man chooses death is one of the maxims that is repeated in Hagakure.

Thanks, i read it in high school. It was hard litterature. It used many old kanji we don't see often anymore in newspapers and books.

Thanks everyone for the early interest! I'll still keep things open for a day or two more, so it won't feel like a rushed queue.

The first adventure will run a couple of months, at the rate of PbP. We can have jump in jump off points after each chapter, sometimes players need to exit, and others might still be queuing to play.

I can provide all the necessary information for character creation, and everyone can learn the rules as we go along. The system is rules-lite, so there isn't too much complexity that will get in the way of the gaming. That said, owning the book is a pleasure in itself if you want to get a feel of Borg-style design (some people love the vibe, others aren't so keen). If you just want the pdf, my go-to is DriveThru RPG. They keep all your downloads in a forever library.

Apocalyptic Shima doesn't deserve cake! :P :P

The publishers have a free PDF version of the rules, without art, on their website

I'll throw my hachimaki in the ring. This game sounds awesome and I like the Onimusha/Nioh vibes.

I'm only semi-new to GP but since we have played (and are playing) together in other games, I probably dont check this box. I have Mork Borg base book but have never played and I have dabbled in a few flavors of OSR.

Here's my haiku:

A belly rumbles
Fields of rice burn, untended
Sweet the final bite
