[OOC] Stuff and Things

Mar 6, 2025 3:30 pm
This is the Out of Character thread - discuss stuff here that isn't in character, ask questions, let everyone know if you're going to be absent for a while, the usual sort of thing. You know the score.

I think I want to discuss a few things I feel Sam would always have on him (barring situations that would specifically prevent or remove his stuff).

I want to say an Apache Revolver. 😂

A 1911 with a spare magazine, a swiss army knife, and possibly a sturdy fixed blade knife seem to be more probable though.

I would also assume he'd have a BAR at his home. Not that he carries it, and he probably won't get to use it, but it seems fitting. (The NFA was passed in '34, and saying he bought it after the war puts him well before that date.)

No on the apache - it's a rather specialist bit of kit. Yes on the M1911, as it was standard kit, and yes to both knives A M1917 bayonet, maybe, for the fixed blade?). BAR is again a specialist bit of kit, so you'd have to make a Credit Rating roll to buy one with a difficulty of 2 - one for the cost, and one for the ability to find one for sale. I would allow a M1917 Enfield rifle though, since that was standard issue too for the time period. Would that work?

The first In Character post is basically just to set the scene, to get you all together - I'm not expecting a massive post in reply, so don't worry that there's not a lot to work with there. The order in which you reply is the order you get picked up in the car, basically. I'll post again with your arrival to meet the patron once you're all ensconced in the car. The first person to reply, the car is empty; the second, there will be the first person in there, and the last, the other two are already in there, so perhaps describe your character as you get in so that the others have something to base their posts on and introduce yourselves to each other.

Great introduction, Lemming!

I've added another thread with pictures and notes on NPCs that you meet. I probably won't do this for all of them, just ones that you're likely to interact with / investigate / interview and that you might want to remember who they are. As you know more about them, I'll probably add some bio info etc.

a useful tool for NPCs (you might know this already, apologies)

maybe it would be useful for you to create and submit to your game a blank custom character sheet called "NPCs" or something, that can act as a container for all your NPCs.
There is a trick to post as an NPC from that one character sheet. If you write in the sheet this code format:

It will give you a gallery of NPC names and portraits. You will be able to tap on the each one to post as that NPC.

(also, pasting a copied image into the Gamersplane post editor will automatically upload that image to Imgur and return the link - SUPER useful!)

I saw that there was such a thing, but I think I'll keep to doing it my way - there may be posts where several NPCs are interacting with you, and it would be confusing if it looked like there was just one doing so. Maybe. The NPC thread is also where I can stick notes in about each NPC too (the first post will be an index linked to each NPC).

Sure thing - a useful thread!

(BTW you can post as multiple NPCs like this:)

Ok, that does look pretty good, would you prefer to PM me to show me, as if you're explaining to a 10 year old who's never heard of computers before?

sure, maybe Discord chat is easiest?

That too. I'm on the GP discord. :) I set up a testing thread here too so I can try out stuff as you try to explain to me and I don't get it. :)

I have to at least try. 🤣

I will, however, preemptively assume it fails. An Enfield 1917 is fine. As is the associated bayonet for the fixed blade.

Cafe Society was a real nightclub too I noticed, and one that accepted both black and white patrons (several of the more famous ones in NYC only allowed white patrons, though most of the musicians were black). I always like to try to bring in actual historical details myself, so I tend to google when others also mention somewhere on the off chance it's based on a real place / person.

I'd also recommend Lovecraft Country (Matt Ruff) if you haven't already read / seen it (tv series based on book) and its sequel - the first book was all about the Green Book (and Cthulhu).

You can introduce yourselves to each other in the IC thread, then I'll post again as you arrive at your destination.

I was going to bring Cafe Society in to Lillian's story more (it was there by name in my earlier background draft), but the timeline was a bit out.

Haven't got to Lovecraft Country yet. Drifted off radar.

I'm ok with a slight bit of legerdemain for timeline stuff if it makes for a more interesting background detail. So no mobile phones suddenly appearing, but stuff like Cafe Society appearing a couple of years earlier than actually occurred is fine.
