Welcome to the game! I've created other threads here with an overview of how the game works, the starting characters you can choose from, and a few introductory scenarios we can pick from when we are ready to get started. I'm happy to answer any questions you have. :)

Hi! I am ges (she/her), it is great to play with you!

So... I have eyed the characters and my first love went to Parish and Lady Sheridan, and then to Gertrude, but I am happy to try others. All of them are... special!

As a chapter, the Breakfast Feast, The Witch Missing Shadow and Lights out are the ones I liked at first sight.

About the chapters: I am of course open to another. Perhaps @Dmbraniac, you prefer one as first chapter or there is one that you didnt play yet and want to try :).

Hi, ges. I go by Brainiac or Brainy (he/him or she/her).

I agree that all of the characters have something special about them that draws me to them. And these are just some of the many we have the potential to unlock as we play.

Let's wait for timplausible to join us to get their thoughts. If we get another player or two as well, that would be great, but I'm also okay just playing with the three of us for now. :)

What do we do first?

Hey everyone! Thanks for the invite! I can start with any introductory scenario and improvise as I read the other threads (might take a few days :( ) if that helps getting the game started.

by the way, welcome to the site ges!

@timplausible Read the Introduction and How to Play thread and let me know if you have any questions. Then take a look at the Residents and Guests and see if there’s somebody you’d like to play first. Finally, take a look at the Chapters and pick one or two that you’d like to start with. I’ll select one from everybody’s choices to be our starting chapter we will play.

@CESN Welcome! There’s no rush, so take your time to read through everything as I suggested to tim. :)

I'm feeling cranky and old lately, so Lady Sheridan feels right. I'll make her my first choice.

As for chapters, I am weirdly drawn to Gone Fishin', despite it seeming at odds with my choice of character (maybe that's why I'm drawn to it). On the flip side, After Dinner would probably be a great opportunity for playing Sherry. And The Pancake War just seems fun.

After reading the "how to play" section I feel like I don't really know how to play. But I assume I'll pick it up as we go.

Sometimes playing characters in a chapter where it seems like they would be an odd choice makes it more fun!

It’s pretty intuitive once you get started. Each category of chapter has its own base rules. Then, each individual chapter has its own bespoke subset of rules. Before we start a chapter, I’ll post all that information so everybody can see it and refer to it as we play.

Had a quick look and I think it could be good to start off with a relaxed chapter just to get used to the game. Gone Fishin' and Breakfast Feast have been mentioned already and both look like good options to me. Still going through the guest list, but outside the ones mentioned I thing Gertrude could fit Gone Fishin' and Amelie for Breakfast Feast

Yes, a relaxed chapter is a good choice to begin with. I think we should start with Gone Fishin'. gesges could play Parish and timplausible could play Lady Sheridan out of her element. CESN could play Gertrude and I could play Sal. Of course, everybody's free to change their choices before we start, and I'm still waiting for one more player who expressed interest to accept the invite to the game, so their choices might change who we play, too.

For now, at least, I'll put up the chapter thread so everybody can read through the rules for this chapter. I'll keep it locked until we finalize our character choices for this chapter.

Yes, that's correct. Note that spending 2 tokens allows you to change your character's belief between fishing being a Pastime or a Sport, in addition to marking any Track you'd like. This is an exception to the usual Track rules, so you could either mark the Sundown Track in this chapter, your Journey's Track, or one of the Assorted Tracks available (more on those later).

No response from the other player yet so we will go ahead and start and they can join in later if they’re interested. I’ve unlocked the thread. You all may either post as your player profiles or submit characters, your choice!

Everybody should detail one or two fish (or things that are not quite a fish) and assign them a point value between 0 and 4. Once everybody has done so, I'll compile them on a table with the ones provided by the chapter text so we can roll randomly to determine what we catch each time we cast a line into the pool.

So I just rolled the number for something that is already in the cooler. I just re-rolled to get something else, but do you thing the card/deck drawing system from GP could be useful for thing that can't be taken twice? (I think it was pretty much abandoned so I am not sure how developed it it)

It might be. I haven't really tried the card system here, though, so I'm not sure of its capabilities and limitations.

Oh! this is an even better idea! We can keep it a mystery (for now) since Gestrude got distracted and won't be asking any wish unless asked again. When convenient, we bring it up in another chapter and add some small continuity to the story :)

I'm planning on doing some sort of redemption for Monday's rudeness. I'm wondering if I'm allowed to do what I was thinking of doing.

Instead of having Monday fish, can I spend a token to have any other character get a fish on their hook? It would be a sneaky way for her to help out without showing compassion in public. Cause I feel like she's someone who's wearing more of a mask than Gertrude is.

Congratulations on completing our first chapter!

I've created a new thread with a link to the tracking document for Characters, Tracks, and Shelves. Here we can see the progress everybody has made on their journeys, make notes or changes to character sheets, fill out assorted tracks, and place Mementos on Shelves to make progress towards unlocking new things. Take a look at it when you have a chance.

At the end of "Gone Fishin'" everybody takes tokens equal to the value of their catch and holds on to them, as well as any other tokens they've collected, as Leftovers for Housekeeping. By my count, that means the total Leftovers for each character is 2 for Gertrude, 5 for Monday, 3 for Parish, 5 for Sal, and 2 for Lady Sheridan. These Leftovers are used to mark tracks on each character's journey. I'll go ahead and marked them for Monday, Parish, Sal, and Sherry.

@CESN, Gertrude's journey doesn't have a track. Instead, she makes progress by accomplishing specific goals. Take a look and let me know if you think any of those goals can be ticked off after this chapter. Her 2 Leftovers can be used to mark the Assorted Tracks. Some of those tracks unlock new Guests and a few lead to more Mementos, so take a look and let me know where you'd like to put them.

We now have our first Memento, a Square (Soggy Old Boot)! Take a look at the different Shelves available. The one Memento on its own isn't enough to unlock anything just yet, but we can decide as a group which Shelf we want to start working towards unlocking first.

Once all that's done, it'll be time to pick the next Chapter that we play! Take a look at the Chapters threads and let me know which one(s) you'd be interested in playing next.

Oh yes she doesn't have a track:Making a friend could work, as this is the wish the talking fish "will be granting". Even if we think Harrold is the friend she made himself, this would still have to wait to be marked. So maybe not yet...

I might have impressed one of the other residents (I guess that's either Parish or Sal, the other being guests?). Maybe fishing becoming a sport impressed Parish? Not sure that is strong enough to mark it (mechanically that's 2 points for a track I guess)

I do think Parish can be considered impressed enough to mark that one off. As for the close friend, I don't think that has happened yet, but perhaps the next time Gertrude is played in a chapter, we can see the effects of Harrold's wish playing out. :)

I wouldn't mind trying one of the pensive chapters like "Ice skating" or "Firefly catching". If people are up for something like that.

Two votes for Firefly Catching, which I think is a good one to do next. I've posted the rules for this chapter in a new thread. We'll need one person to play Sal and one to play Hey Kid. Everybody else can pick whomever they'd like. Once everybody's chosen, we can start posting. Let me know if you have any questions about how this chapter works. :)

Summary again to be sure I understood:

Yes, that's correct! You can do a Bingo at any time, unlike with relaxed chapters. That summary is the basic framework for almost all of the pensive chapters.

I think amelie could be a nice contrast to this chapter, or maybe Yola since she refused to act her age

Alright, it looks like I'll be playing Sal again. The TheGenerator can play Hey Kid, gesges can play Percival, and CESN can play either Amelie or Yola.

I'm out of town until Tuesday morning but the rest of you can start posting at you're leisure. I may have time to write a short post later tonight.

I'd say either the front desk as some sort of a group trophy, or the pantry (a boot doesn't fit there, but it is Parish's place and he is a proud fisherfrog after all)

It was nice to have old grumpy Sherry musing about the good old days! I guess this is actually the game where we can confidently say you're welcome to join us again anytime for a little chapter when you miss it :)

Amelie has already kind of answered the question, but CESN may offer more thoughts of their own, and everybody else may do so as well. The Big Question has 13 tokens on it so we can give a full answer if we have one.

I'm terrible at tracking tokens clearly xD I thought it only had 9 😅 If it was more than 13 I'd want my token back to reprogram Amelie, but 13 is just a nice number. I might add more to the answer if i feel inspired as I was only thinking of "1 sentence answer"

Heh, okay. Before you put the token on it, it had 12 since gesges indicated Percy would place his 4 tokens on it. It's up to you if you want to push it to 13 or keep the token to use towards Amelie's journey.

Or gesges could only put 1 token on it to get to 9 and keep 3 tokens for Percy's joruney!

I also don't mind it being downgraded to a 9 token question. Just like CESN I didn't realize we were already above 9. Either way works for me :)

Once everybody else answers, we can wrap up the chapter. We'll get a second Square Memento (Jar of Fireflies) to add to a Shelf. We didn't decide on the final placement of the first Memento. If we put both of them on the Front Desk, we can unlock a new Guest (Muckleby) and open up the rest of that Shelf, which features several more guests that can be unlocked. Or if we put both in the Pantry, we're one more memento away from unlocking a new chapter (The Tomtom Hunt) and opening up the rest of that Shelf which features some new guests and Parish-related chapters, as well as new things related to Parish's interests.

I've applied Amelie's, Sal's, and Percy's leftovers to their respective journeys. @TheGenerator you can choose which track(s) on Hey Kid's sheet advance using the two tokens they have as leftovers.

We should start deciding which chapter we would like to play next! We've done a Relaxed and a Pensive chapter now, so maybe a Frantic or Eerie chapter would be appropriate for the next one. Let me know which one(s) you'd be interested in playing!

Yes, you could spread the Mementos around to multiple shelves if you prefer. It will just take longer to unlock things that way, but it's all up to you! :D

Good summary, CESN! When you check your Chaos Coins, you can roll 1d2 for each one you have. A 1 is heads while a 2 is tails.

Since this chapter is designed for large groups, I'll probably make a few posts for some of the other residents and guests during this chapter even though I'm not playing them as my primary character. :)

Well now you are! Yola did a Bingo and gave you her 2 coins earlier. It’s easy to lose track of things, that’s why I post the Chapter Status every so often. You can cash in 5 to automatically succeed at asking somebody a question or to tick your suspicion track and get closer to being able to guess where the party is happening.

The 5 coins means Yazeba has to answer the question, but she doesn't have to answer truthfully. If she lies or evades the truth, you mark a spot on Gertrude's suspicion track. :)

Since Yazabe didn't ask anything of Gertrude, then I can argue the truthful answer is: I didn't tell you anything 😅 which I guess was not as indented.

I've advanced Parish's and Yola's journeys based on the number of tokens they got. Amelie's token gives them a chance to edit their programming, which I'll do later today. @CESN,@gesges you can see if Gertrude and Yazeba did things to advance their journeys. I believe at the least that Yazeba recognized Gertrude's efforts and offered her a real job. And I'm pretty sure Yazeba was mean to several people!

Since neither Gertrude nor Yazeba have tracks on their journeys, we can use their tokens for assorted tracks. If we put them all towards the book club one, we can complete it!

We have one Square Memento now. We can use it in the Front Desk to unlock one of the other guests that use a Square Memento (Bethsy, a spoiled white cat hunting for a treasure; The Dabrowski Family, Lily & Her Dad Bill, an exhausted wizard-in-training and her oblivious father; or Rowan & Zephyr Lyrathiel, a pair of dandy elven bards with foppish and cosmopolitan tastes). Or we could hang onto it and wait to get more mementos to unlock other shelves.

Either way, we'll need to choose a new chapter to play next!

My vote goes to Lily & dad or the Elven bards :)

A slice of cake would look good on the Front Desk for the guest to take, or on Yazeba's study given the way things when. But I guess it's better to focus on unlocking stuff so we have more diversity down the line. Actually, do we have access to the guest options to check what they are looking for? In principle I'd like to see how a "a spoiled white cat hunting for a treasure" would play out, but given he votes, maybe Lily & dad

I'd say Lights out to have more flexible/different characters for the next one.

Since Bethsy needs to be played in specific chapters, picking her is the optimal gaming choice for slow PbP (avoid repeating chapters). But I like Bill's potential for cluelessness

We can retroactively give Bethsy credit for chapters you've already played before she was unlocked if you don't want to unlock her just yet. :D

I created a new subforum for miscellaneous roleplaying separate from the chapters. The first thread there is the book club! We can post there at our leisure for some extra fun.

I have baby in hospital since saturday and it is going to be more days. I am right now out of order (my brain can not take much more).
