Winter our discontent (RP)

Continues from Paying the Price.

Given the rain, and also the general weakened or injured state of almost all of you, a hackney carriage (black taxi cab) seems the way to go. It drops you off in front of Persephone's building in Mayfair.

• Persephone: Describe your place from the outside. Take us up to your door and invite Benji in.
OOC:
There is a surprise in your sitting room. So don't go much past the front door.

They step out of the cab in front of Persephone's building. The structure was built around 1900 and once housed the headquarters of Rolls Royce, apparently, though now it is luxury condos. The façade features stonework in an Art Nouveau style, with a brass and glass double door entry covered with an awning. No doorman here, however; only a keyfob entryway and two high end surveillance cameras can be seen. Persephone waves a fob at the door, but it seems to be opening before she even does so.

The lobby inside is similarly high-end, featuring marble floors, brass and stone stylized wall detailing, and several massive Art Nouveau paintings depicting mythological scenes. Stainless steel elevators occupy the far wall, with no buttons -- only the keyfob pad and more cameras. Again, the elevator doors seem to open before she has even arrived at the elevators.

In addition to another keyfob sensor, only three buttons greet the passenger, marked Emergency, Lobby, and Rooftop Terrace. Once they have entered, the elevator launches upwards, smooth and silent, without Persephone doing a thing. With a quiet tone, it opens, revealing a minimalist hallway with sound dampening carpet, high ceilings, and indirect lighting.

Persephone walks to the furthest of the three doors in this hallway and waves her fob at the pad on the door, which clicks open. She turns and says, "Welcome. Um, I apologize in advance, but it's a mess. Oh... and Benji, do I have to... invite you in? Is that really a thing? Well... um... I guess..." She glances nervously at Emma, and finishes her sentence, saying, "I guess you are welcome to come in."

She opens the door and heads inside.

As you and your guests enter you are met by the sight of your sister, exiting the shower area in a cloud of steam, wearing nothing but a towel and a black eye.

It is typical of family to embarrass us whenever we bring friends home, and you might have been suitably vexed by this if your mind were not overwhelmed by the sight of ... Howard Winters ... sitting on your couch, looking alive and well.

What do you do?
Mar 20, 2025 4:27 am
Persephone walks into her condo, mostly looking back at Emma, Benji, and Bev. She was preoccupied with the implications of having invited a vampire into her home, after all.

By the time she reaches the living room, she turns to see… "Circe!!! Oh, sorry I should have called to let you know I was bringing… wait, what happened to your eye?‽ Are you o…"

She trails off as her brain finally groks who else is here. What… the hell… is HE doing here?!?! How is he still alive?!?! Ohmigod ohmigod ohmigod…

Persephone feels as if a panic attack is coming on. What will her patron do to her? To her loved ones? Oh no…

She strides quickly toward Circe, keeping her face turned away from … him as she does so. Hopefully, he won’t recognize her all disheveled and in Chablis’ bargain rack clothes. She grabs Circe by the arm and pulls/drags/pushes her back into a bedroom and closes the door, leaving … him behind with the others.

In a whisper-yell, panicking, she says, "What is going on?!?! What happened to you? And what is that man doing here??"

Meanwhile, the others find themselves in Persephone’s condo. The condo is laid out in an open floor plan with minimalist decor. Two large wall sized windows at the corner of the building dominate the scene, with the rain running down the glass and vistas of central and North London visible through beyond. In the center of the space are some low, minimalist couches and tables. To the left, a dining room sits near an island and a modern kitchen with high end appliances, all appearing unused. To the right are three doors, two of them open. One goes into a spacious bathroom for guests and the other into Persephone's bedroom suite. Guests can glimpse into the bedroom and see another set of windows, a king size bed, an office space with computer and ergo chair, and a master bath.

Circe squeaks as you drag her into the bedroom. She was trying to sneak from bathroom to bedroom, behind the man sitting in the sitting room.

Circe's hand goes to her eye at your question. "No one told me punching bags punch back!" She says, trying to make light of the situation, but she seems a bit shocked by your reaction. "I got too close and got hit in the face and fell down. It was great fun." She clearly expects you to remember about the kickboxing you sent her to, that has been the main thing in her day and is uppermost in her mind even if your day has been full of weirdness.

She seems surprised by your tone when speaking about 'Howard'. "He's sweet!" She says. "He gave me a recipe for treating the bruising. He was returning your purse. Why are you being so mean?"

- Benji and Emma -

The man sitting in the room was resolutely facing the other way, but he looks back in surprise, just too late to see Persepone drag her sister into a bedroom (Benji can guess Circe is a sister from how similar they look). He stands, confused and looks at you puzzled.

"Hello." He says hesitantly, looking at you carefully as though wondering who you are.

OOC:
If either of you want to Put a Name to a Face, you can do that. He is Power.
It might make more sense for Emma to wait for introductions, and then see if she can Put a Face to a Name instead, using information from the files she pilfered from Arundel ('the Arundel Files' from now on?).
Mar 20, 2025 4:55 am
Hearing Circe’s words, her panic attack subsides. "Ooh!!! Kickboxing, right. Are you ok? Does it hurt? Do you need ibuprofen? Or an ice pack? Wait, did they check you for a concussion? Here let me see your pupils…"

After a few minutes of acting like a mom and fussing over her little sis, Persephone turns to the ‘elephant’ in her living room. She says, acting sheepish, "So…. Howard. I met him at a club the other night. He seemed nice, though he did not seem to be having much fun. To be honest, it was a bit awkward, so I left, but I lost my purse along the way. I guess it’s nice of him to return it, but… kind of weird? He, uh, made a move and I shut him down, so he might be resentful about ii guess… oh hell I guess I gotta deal with this. Why don’t you, uh, get dressed and I’ll take care of him? I mean… like… I’ll send him away. Nicely."

She turns to head out and face the music. Ohmigod… this is not good…

- Persephone -

"Yes, mom." Circe says sarcastically-joking as you check her pupils. (Do you know what you are looking for?)

"They checked me out. I've had pain killers, and ice, at the gym. I was supposed go straight from the hot shower to the cold compress. But now I have cooled down and will have to ask if it will still work." She pouts at your interrupting her experiment with Chinese medicine.

Circe does not seem overly concerned with your tale of 'Howard making a move on you', it does not seem in character from her brief exposure to the man. It only takes her a second to pull on tights and a t-shirt and she is right behind you as you make for the bedroom door.

What do you do?
OOC:
We might want to wait for the others to post before we rejoin the action in the ... uh... 'living' room.

"Here, have a look at the menu" Emma handed Bev her phone, rather than reading out to her the name of every dish "I recommend the special 'Laksa', but if you don't want anything too spicy you can go for 'Tarka Dahl Curry'" Emma was famished, having skipped breakfast and donating like a pint of blood. She didn't want to waste any time waiting for their food to arrive, so she thought they could get a jump on their order.

But before Bev can respond, Persephone opened the door to her apartment and they found themselves staring at Circe, with nothing but a bathroom wrapped around her. She was about to say something, and then she spotted the man sitting casually on the couch. Circe's boyfriend? She could only assume he was. What woman would go have a shower and leave someone in her living room, while they were alone in her house, if they didn't have some sort of an intimate relationship?

"Oh, sorry, didn’t realize you were… in the middle of something" she shot a glance at Pers, who quickly steps in to usher Circe away to the bedroom.

"Well, anyway…" she managed to smile at the man, feeling the urge to poke fun at him "Are you staying for lunch with us, or… have you already eaten?"
Mar 20, 2025 9:37 am
Benji trails behind the rest of the group as Persephone leads the way through the lobby. He’s not sure he’s ever been anywhere this fancy before. He supposes he’s been to a few old castles and things like Arundel, but they’re fancy in a sort of dusty, familiar way. Everything here is so shiny and clean. He stops to look at one of the massive paintings for a moment, and has to hurry to catch up with everyone else before the elevator doors slide shut.

When they get to Persephone’s condo, he thanks Persephone for inviting him in and, upon stepping across the threshold, notices that she appears to have other guests. There is a woman dressed in a towel and…

You know this guy, or at least you have seen him around and hear him spoken of in a generally positive light.

Zhiyu Dōng is a greengrocer, running a vegetable stall in Covent Garden, but he is also a bit of a ... well 'folk-hero' is probably too strong a term, but he is known to help the people of Chinatown (which abuts your station) with everything from advice (including legal and medical) to investigative work.

There is some spark of recognition in his eye as he steps forward to shake your hand in the western tradition and greet the ladies.

"Hello." He says again, in perfect (though perfectly unremarkable) English. "I'm Zhiyu." He seems surprised and little put out by all the people, but he does not explain his reason for being here to you.

What do you do?
Mar 21, 2025 11:20 am
Emma couldn’t see why Circe would choose hookup with a man more than twice her age, but it wasn’t her place to judge. That was Circe’s decision to make. She shot another quick look at Zhiyu (who she vaguely recognized as a greengrocer at Covent Garden) but since he seemed more interested in talking to Benji, she shrugged and turned to Bev: "Come, let’s set the table while Pers and Circe sort things out. I’m starving!"
Mar 21, 2025 11:21 am
"Nice to meet you! I'm Benji," Benji responds, shaking Zhiyu's hand. "I think I've seen you around Piccadilly before, once or twice. Are you a friend of Persephone's?"
Mar 22, 2025 2:32 am
- Benji -

Zhiyu makes a small, deprecating gesture, as if to say: 'people know me'. If your name registers to him he does not show it.

"'Friend'? That is my hope." He says, not committing. You don't get the impression he means Persephone harm.

"It's very nice of you to offer." Zhiyu replies to your ... is it an 'invitation'? It [ref] could be taken as such. "I had no planned to stay." He seems unsure of the dynamic and looks around for 'the lady of the house' to provide clarity.

Bev looks embarrassed to be caught in family drama, and unconsciously starts to clean up the area while you look for table settings.

What do you do?
Mar 22, 2025 6:38 am
"Well, if you are staying, do you mind giving us a hand?" she grabbed a couple of trash bags and handed them over to Zhiyu, before he has the chance to object. "Put the empty bottles and takeout boxes in here. Everything needs to go. I’ll get started on the dishes. Bev, you set the table, alright?" maybe she couldn't save Pers' soul just yet, but at least she could help her out by dealing with a little bit of chaos in her life.

Zhiyu seems mighty surprised by being roped into clean the apartment, this is not normally expected of visitors. You can't know this, but, if he had thought it would be polite, he would rather have done some cleaning while waiting for Circe to shower instead of sitting passively trying to pretend he had not noticed the mess.

He takes a rubbish bag and seems quite adept at cleaning up.

OOC:
Not sure if you are waiting for us. No rush, but I only meant to see how the others were reacting, and give them a chance to roll, before you rejoined the party [ref]. Come back any time you are ready.
Mar 22, 2025 3:11 pm
After Persephone calms down and regains her composure, she hugs Circe and says, "I'm sorry. I came in and saw you hurt and naked and assumed the worst. Here, let me get you something to wear and then we can... uh, go out."

And face Howard...[/I], she thinks.

Persephone goes to her closet and switches her top for something of her own--a comfy cashmere turtleneck sweater, one that would completely conceal the bite mark on her shoulder. She takes care to change out of sight of her sister and then returns to her. Then she picks out a few things for Circe to throw on. A pair of loose-fitting yoga pants and an oversized Stanford sweatshirt (she has several, of course). She hands them to Circe to put on.

Once she's dressed, she heads to the door. She takes a deep breath, puts on a smile, opens the door, and steps out.

Once again she is met with a sight she did not expect--Howard is helping her friends clean her apartment?! [i]What the? Ugh, I guess I better get used to being disoriented. I haven't felt like this since... Ohmigod it's like being a freshman in college again. great.

She walks over to them and speaks to them all, her voice controlled, apologetic, sing-songy.

"Hi, everyone! Sorry about that. When we came in and I saw my baby sis with a black eye and, well, undressed, well, I guess my maternal instinct kicked in! Well, I'm relieved to say she's OK... She enrolled in my kickboxing school this morning and just got back from class. Well, apparently...ha... she's really diving in, going straight to full-contact, an had a little accident! Haha, best be careful, Circe! Ha. Well. Anyway. So, um, Circe, these are some friends of Emma's I've just met--that's Bev and that's Benji. An you know Emma, of course. This is my sister, Circe."

She turns to face Howard. "And this... is ... um, Howard. We met, very briefly, at a club the other night. Um... Howard? Ha. What are you doing in my apartment?" Her voice is strained now, a pleading look in her eyes.
OOC:
No prob! I just wanted to give everyone else a chance to post before I sent the above wall of text. Ugh I need to work on concision...

Emma was elbow deep in sudsy water scrubbing the plates when Pers walked back into the living room. She turned her head slightly, nodding, then smiling, when she heard that Circe was ok "Who did they have you sparing with?" she turns to look back at the dishes as she waited for an answer, scrubbing another plate, before stopping abruptly. Wait. Howard??

She thought she had it all figured out. She saw Circe strolling into the living room earlier with nothing but a short towel wrapped around her midsection, while Zhiyu was sitting right there on the couch. She was certain the two of them hooked up. What other explanation could there be? Circe didn't know they would walk in on them at that very moment, and she was busy prancing around half naked into the living room without any concern for her modesty when they opened the door. But now it appeared that Pers knew 'Howard' too.

She paused, hands still in the water, as she glanced back at Zhiyu: "Wait. Is it Howard, or Zhiyu?"
Mar 22, 2025 10:16 pm
Benji is standing next to Emma, drying the clean dishes with a tea towel. He doesn’t interrupt Persephone’s explanation or her confrontation with Howard/Zhiyu except to wave cheerily at Circe when introduced.

- Persephone -

"I wasn't 'naked'." Circe objects. "The towel covered more than half the dresses in your closet!" She has a point. "Anyway, I checked before making the run, and he was resolutely looking the other way."

Does Circe sound disappointing that 'Howard' did not try to sneak a peak? Surely not! And then, you have to admit, your intention was to bring people, including a 'man', over to your place while you took a shower.

Circe certainly seems more embarrassed that her guest is cleaning up than that he might have caught a glimpse. She heads over to his side to help him. Yes, she is definitely showing off, now. The single layer of borrowed clothing clings slightly to her hastily-dressed, still-damp body. Circe seems a bit miffed that neither of the men in the flat are paying her displayed attributes the attention they deserve.

Because 'Howard' does not notice. His eyes are on you, studying you as the words spill forth from your mouth.

"Humblest apologies." He says contritely. "I did not mean to startle you." Though he definitely seems pleased, like he has confirmed something.

"'Howard' is my brother." He blinks and a look of realisation crosses his face. "Was my brother. Wuhao."

"I regret to inform you," Zhiyu is watching everyone —but mostly you— carefully for any reactions as he speaks. "My brother passed away..." He says, thankfully not saying: 'in that same club, where you were the last person to see him alive'.

How do you react?

Mar 22, 2025 11:16 pm
Persephone’s face goes pale and her stomach flip-flops. She takes one step toward the man, almost as if she wants to reach out to him, but she stops herself. She lowers her hand and holds it in her other hand, clasped in front of her body.

"Zhiyu. I am sorry about your brother. I had the chance to meet him just before he… he passed. He seemed like a genuinely decent person who had found himself in an impossible situation…"

Persephone glances at Emma.

"I guess I could relate to that. I think… I think we authentically connected. But.. he had so much cocaine in a baggie, and he … well.. he started taking it. It was very upsetting, so I left. And… apparently, left behind my purse."

She makes eye contact with Zhiyu for the first time. She is frightened, panicked, but trying her best to keep her cool and sell her half-truth.

"That was very kind of you to return it. You must have a million more important things to do. May I offer you something to drink?"

Then, turning to the others, she extends the same offer, saying, "So! Sorry about that. Would anyone like anything?
Mar 23, 2025 5:08 am
"Bev’s a nurse, you know, if you want her to take a look at that black eye" she said as she handed another plate to Benji. She then raised an eyebrow at Circe, giving her a half accusing, half amused glance. "Hey! Didn’t we say we’d go to the kickboxing class together? I was actually looking forward to checking it out!" [ref] She wasn’t angry, just a bit disappointed. The idea of the two of them hitting the gym together, checking out kickboxing for the first time, was still very much on her mind. But with a whole other scene unfolding in front of her, that idea quickly slipped away, at least for now.

"Oh no!" she quickly wiped her hands on a dish towel so she could give Zhiyu her full attention. She was no longer playful, her face softening instantly: "I'm so sorry for your loss" she grew more and more concerned as she pieced together how he died. At least, she thought she did. "That's horrible" she murmured "he died there, in the club?" she lowered her voice, as if speaking louder would make it somehow more painful for Zaiyu

"I am sorry you had to see that." Zhiyu says. "Though I am glad he was not alone near the end." There is a gravity to his words, as though his brothers 'loneliness' is weighing on his mind.

"Thank you all, for your kind words." Zhiyu says, even though Circe is showing more concern for you than for him right now. She has just done the maths and worked out that 'the other night' is probably where you were returning late from 'having a bad night' and 'losing your stuff'.

"You never said someone died!" Circe says, more focused on her own 'problems' of your not telling her you were struggling than on what you must be going through, or what poor Zhiyu is going through.

"It's a bit early for that." Zhiyu says, wondering if your offer for a drink is one of those often-codeword for 'time to leave' ("would you like another coffee" being the common idiom expected to be followed by "No, no. I really must go."). Zhiyu does not want to impose on your party. "I would, very much like to speak to you some more." He says. "Before the funeral. There are Chinese traditions about the last people he spoke to. You know." This last part sounds ... made up, but as an Asian-Americans you might not know all the intricate details?

Persephone visibly relaxes when she realizes that Zhiyu is not here to blame her, or accuse her, or worse. It suddenly occurs to her that she did in fact provide some comfort and human connection to the poor man before his end. Still, she feels deeply guilty.

She turns to Zhiyu, tears welling in her eyes. "I'm so sorry. I wish... I wish I could have helped him. I should have done more. Of course, I'd be happy to help. We can set up a time to talk. Anything I can do."

She turns to Circe when she speaks up and shrugs. She says, "You'd just arrived. I ... I didn't want to dump that on you. And then stuff came up and I never found a time to tell you about it."

She turns to Emma an adds, "That was the man I met who I told you about? That I was upset about? Remember?"

Persephone told Emma she had to kill a man the other night (ref)
Mar 23, 2025 7:52 pm
Pers seemed like she was a step away from confessing to murder. She was giving out WAY too much details, though she probably had no choice but to say something after mistaking Zhiyu for Howard. What a mess...

She would have much rather stay out of the conversation entirely, and was more than annoyed when Pers asked her if she remembered her story. She tried her best to forget what her friend did that night, and now not only did she remind her, but she put her on Zhiyu's radar too, which was something she preferred to avoid.

She sighed internally. She had to say something now, or risk looking guilty. So she nodded silently in response, still looking at Zhiyu with as much sympathy as she could muster. Why WAS he at Pers apartment, anyways? Why didn't he just drop off a purse and leave? No, Zhiyu was sticking around for answers. And the longer he stayed, the more likely it was that Persephone would slip up and say something she shouldn’t.

- Persephone -

"Thank you." Zhiyu says. "It will be helpful to understand what he was thinking... at the end." Howard did have a suicidal amount of cocaine on him, so maybe Zhiyu is just trying to understand his brother's mindset?

Emma inadvertently invited Zhiyu to stay for lunch. Do you extend that invitation, or exchange numbers and arrange a time to meet up and put him out?

What do you do?
OOC:
If you kick him out and arrange a time, we don't need to say, yet, when that is, we can slot it in whenever the story allows. He wants 'soon', today or tomorrow, at the latest, and would much rather do it today, but we can play it by ear.
Mar 24, 2025 3:38 am
Persephone nods sympathetically to Zhiyu and then looks to the others. Realizing the awkwardness of the situation, she turns to Zhiyu and says, "If you don't mind, I'd like us to have our discussion in private. When would be a good time for you? I can meet you wherever and whenever you like. I am free later this afternoon, for instance, or tomorrow."

She pulls out her phone and opens her calendar, finger poised to create an event. She looks at him expectantly.

"That would be great." Zhiyu says, agreeing to your time.

"It was nice to meet you all." He says to the rest of the group. "Thank you for your hospitality, Circe."

Circe looks disappointed that he is being dismissed, but even she can tell that yours is a conversation best done without an audience. She takes it upon herself to see Zhiyu out (unless you step in first and prevent that (this would give you all —you all who are 'in the know'— a few moments to talk without her hearing)).

Persephone thanks Zhiyu once more for bringing her purse and promises to see him over coffee near his grocery later that day. As Circe closes the door, she turns to Emma, Benji, and Bev, her face tight with anxiety.

"OK, so. Does everyone have a drink? Or whatever food they want ordered? Sorry I don't have more to offer--I haven't had a chance to get to the store."

She moves toward them in the kitchen area and takes a deep breath. "So, um. In the past day, I have learned that vampires exist. I, uh, happen to have known about one other...supernatural being that also exists. Um, demons." She looks at Bev with deadly seriousness in her eyes. She adds, now including Benji, "I know, Bev, I know. It's unbelievable. I assume you knew about them already?"

Once Bev is at least momentarily on board, she continues. "So, I also happen to know that that guy whose brother died? The brother had apparently made a contract with a demon and it was up that night--as in, he had a limited time to enjoy what he had bargained away his soul for, and the clock was up and he had to die. So rather than have some awful demonic thug kill him, he... OD'ed on cocaine."

Persephone looks at Emma with these words, her eyes full of self-loathing and pain.

She looks to Benji and asks, "Do you know anything about this sort of thing? Demons and their contracts? Can they be broken? Like, was there anything I could have done for Howard? Or, uh, Wuhao. And while we're on the topic, are there any other supernatural creatures I should be aware of? Werewolves? Ghosts? Frankensteins? Mummies? Bigfoot? Aliens?‽ "
Mar 24, 2025 2:47 pm
- Persephone -

Bev plays it cool, to the best of her ability. She was quite proud that she caught on that there was a whiff of demon about you, she knows about this stuff... Though, in actuality, she only knows about vampires and demons —and she only learned about vampires, like, a week ago— and since you were not seeming to know about vampires, she assumed you must be the other one. The way you are talking suggests to her that you don't want to reveal your nature to the others —though Emma seemed to know something was up with your blood— so she does not mention it.

Your questions about breaking deals gives her a strong hint about what your nature must surely be, and she seems as interested in hearing about other boogedy-boos as you are.
Mar 24, 2025 10:29 pm
"Oh, sure! I have a good friend who’s a demon. He runs a bookshop. He’s out of town, unfortunately, else I would introduce you," says Benji, still happily drying dishes, apparently not at all perturbed by the rather grim discussion leading up to this. "And Bev’s, um…" He pauses, glancing at Bev uncertainly. "…Well, Bev and I have a mutual friend who’s a demon hunter, but she’s also out of town, I’m afraid. I’m not an expert on demonic contracts, by any means, but I know my friend was able to escape hell and stay on earth based on a loophole in his orders. He never told me the details, but that suggests demonic deals and bargains and such aren’t always completely airtight. Perhaps there was a way Wuhao could have wriggled out of it…"

He smiles, amused by Persephone’s flurry of questions about aliens and bigfoot, of all things. "Werewolves and ghosts, certainly! Although you won’t meet many werewolves in London anymore… As for the rest of that stuff— I’ve never personally met any frankensteins or, uh… bigfeet, but anything’s possible!"
Mar 25, 2025 3:10 am
Once again, Persephone gapes in disbelief. They ALL already know about demons? I am so naïve...

She throws up her hands and says, "Ok, well, fine! Since being a supernatural creature seems to be as common as being left-handed around here, I'll admit it. I foolishly made a pact with a demon, and I am currently at some stage of becoming one. Or something. They really kept me in the dark about the way these things work. And they never told me about, like, anything! I missed the supernatural orientation, apparently. So anyway. Hi. Demon girl here. But I promise I'm a nice demon. Mostly." She shakes her head and slumps onto the couch, feeling defeated.

Then it suddenly hits her. She looks up at them, full of sadness, and says, "Ohmigod... I'm just like Chablis! I'm new and totally in the dark. Oh god I'm gonna throw up... I... I don't want this. But if I have to be this monster, I wanna try to use it for good. Is that even possible?"
Mar 25, 2025 4:34 am
"There are also wizards and witches. And Faeries, though those haven't been seen in a long time" She picked up a few tidbits at Arundel and was happy to share them so casually "Anyways, there aren't that many 'supernatural's around. It’s actually pretty rare" She didn’t need to mention how she knew that, but the Administrator's contact list didn't have thousands and thousands of names on it.

"Look" she tried to comfort Pers when she saw how much it was weighing on her "We’re going to find a way out of this. I’m sure of it. There has to be a loophole somewhere." Emma always had an unshakable optimism about her, likely because she always managed to wiggle out of trouble in her own way, so she was confident that Persephone would too.
Mar 26, 2025 2:40 am
"If it’s any consolation, I know plenty of perfectly nice monsters," adds Benji. "Being not-quite-human doesn’t mean you have to be evil."
Mar 26, 2025 5:01 am
Persephone listens to them quietly and nods. Somehow, taking to them, and hearing them normalize all this, helps her to accept it too. She begins to calm, and for the first time since everything fell apart, she can feel a glimmer of hope—maybe her life isn’t over, and she isn’t doomed. Not entirely, not yet. Maybe. And that is enough.

She raises her eyes to them and smiles. "I have a lot to learn. But I would trust you with my life, Emma, and you seem like a good and genuine person, Benji, as do you, Bev. So maybe I can figure out a way to live with all this, until I can find a way to be free of it."

She stands, walks over to Emma, and embraces her in a hug. "Thank you," she whispers to her. She withdraws and speaks more loudly, saying, "Thank you, all of you. Now I think I need to go speak to my demonic superior and get clarity on some things. Oh, and please don’t tell Circe. I’m not ready for that yet."
Mar 26, 2025 8:32 pm
Emma would never call Benji a monster, but it would be foolish to forget how dangerous he could be. He himself mentioned that he had to feed every day to avoid 'accidents'. She has seen Chablis losing control and ready to do anything to sate her own hunger. They might try to be nice and genuine and kind, but they were always only a few missed meals away from a murder spree.

Then again, the same could be said about everyday humans too. She was pretty sure civilization would collapse if food became so scarce that people couldn't eat for a week. She wasn't sure that she herself wouldn't be driven to do awful things out of necessity in such a case either.

Pushing these thoughts out of her mind, she squeezed Pers in a reassuring hug, tapping her lightly on the shoulder as she pulled away. "I’ll do whatever I can to help you"

But when Pers mentioned Circe, she turned her head toward the door, wondering what was taking her so long "You should probably check on her before she leaves with Zhiyu"
Mar 27, 2025 2:57 am
Persephone nods to Emma and hurries toward the door. As she nears the front door, she shouts back, "Help yourself to whatever you want in the kitchen! I’ll be right back, hopefully with Circe."

The food you ordered arrives promptly. If you think about it, you may notice that you were not prompted to pay for the order, or you may notice this discrepancy later, when you deal with credit cards statements (or not at all). Somehow it was just 'taken care of'.

Your concern for Bev and spicy food proves unwarranted, it turns out what she ordered would melt the top of your mouth off. "I'm North African!" She says, by way of explanation. "Most of my food, growing up, was more than 30% pepper by weight." She is probably exaggerating about this, but, then again, maybe not. Even being near her parcel makes your eyes water.

Benji (I am assuming) did not order anything.

Persephone's purse lies on the table where Zhiyu left it. It looks fancy.

What do you do?
Mar 27, 2025 12:57 pm
Emma fights the urge to open the purse sitting on the counter. Maybe if Bev and Benji weren’t around, she might have risked a quick peek. Maybe.

"Hold on. You’re from North Africa?!"

Turns out she didn’t know as much about Bev as she thought. She never would have guessed it from her name. She leaned in toward her, her interest piqued "Where exactly are you from?"

She always dreamed of traveling the world. Africa, Asia. Anywhere exotic where she could get a taste of something completely different. But she could never afford it, so all her adventures had to be contained to London. Living vicariously through Bev was the next best thing. "How long have you been in England?" she pressed her, questioning her the way she would any supernatural creature she had been chasing down lately "What’s it like back home?"
Mar 27, 2025 1:07 pm
- Emma -

"Well, not me personally." Bev admits. "I was born here. But my parents are from Sierra Leone. So that how I grew up, eating like it we are still cook like 'back home'. You English chicks are too skinny!" She grins.

"I have only been back a few times, for cousins' weddings and such, but it beautiful, and very friendly."

What do you do?
Mar 27, 2025 1:29 pm
"I've got it where it counts" she says with a wink when Bev calls her out for being 'skinny'. She takes a bite out of her own meal - chicken satay with peanut sauce with just a hint of heat. "Sierra Leone....I wish I could travel there, but it doesn't look like it is in the cards right now" or anytime soon, considering hers and David financial situation "You have to teach me how to make something sometime. We should cook together, like a little cooking class. I’d love to try some authentic food." she paused, and added "Just go easy on me. I'm not sure I can handle that level of spicy!"
Mar 27, 2025 1:47 pm
Benji eyes Bev’s food curiously. He’s never tried spicy food before. He wonders what it tastes like. Bad, probably, as human food always does, but what does spicy taste like exactly? "May I try a little?" he asks Bev, succumbing to his curiosity.

Then, suddenly: "Oh, Emma, I just remembered — I’ve been meaning to ask if I could have a signed copy of your book. I met a fan of yours who had his copy stolen and destroyed so I offered to get him a new one. I thought it might be nice if I could get it signed for him, as a surprise."
Mar 27, 2025 3:30 pm
Bev blushes and does not know where to look when Emma teases her with a wink. She is relieved when Benji changes the subject.

"Uh? If you can? Sure." Bev says, offering her plate to anyone who is brave enough to try. She is intrigued by what food, especially hot food, will do to a vampire.

What do you do?
Mar 27, 2025 4:13 pm
Was Bev...blushing? She quickly dismissed the idea. She hadn't said anything out of the ordinary, so it was probably just the spicy food. She let it go, and turned her attention to Benji when he asked if she could sign a copy of her book for his friend.

"I’d be happy to!" It was near impossible to her to deny anyone who expressed interest in her work "Do you have a copy with you? If not, we can swing by my apartment later. I keep plenty of extras"

Not to be outdone by the vampire, she decided to show some courage and try the food Bev had offered, picking up a tiny morsel. Almost immediately, her face flushed from the intense heat, and she reached for her water "Okay. Wow" She coughed "That’s... definitely spicy" She took a quick sip, but it didn't do much for the burn in her mouth "I think it’ll take some getting used to..."
Mar 28, 2025 4:10 am
"That would be great!" Benji responds to Emma’s offer to pick up an extra copy of her book from her apartment later. "I tried to get a copy from Jacob’s bookshop earlier today, but there was some sort of fungus growing on most of them. He seems to have installed a pond in the middle of his shop just before he left and it’s not agreeing with the books at all…"

As he talks, he picks up a spare fork and dips the tines in Bev’s food, picking up a tiny bit of sauce. He licks the fork and is motionless for half a second before his eyes widen in alarm. He drops the fork with a clatter, panicked and confused by the burning inside his mouth. It feels like he tried to eat sunlight. He coughs, eyes watering. "It hurt me!" he exclaims, shocked and indignant.
Mar 28, 2025 4:45 am
"Jacob" Emma repeated the name, unable to hide the distaste from her voice.

"You know, the Administrator blames both you and Jacob for what happened in Arundel" she paused as she studied his reaction "Turns out, Lady Halifax threw both of you under the bus. She claimed she was kidnapped and forced to join you when you entered the chapel. And, of course, the Administrator believed her" she shook her head and sighed "He’s been kind of... extorting me into working for him, and that’s after he concluded my part in it was smaller than yours. Since he sees you as the main culprit behind what went down, I’m sure he’s got something nasty planned for you too." She let that hang for a moment, wanting to make sure Benji was paying attention "Watch your back, alright?"

Her eyes widened as he dropped the fork. She hadn’t expected the spice to hit him that hard, but then again, his senses were hyper-sensitive, way more than a human’s. Or maybe there was garlic in the sauce? Who knows?

"You’ve never tried spicy food before? In all those centuries?"

Bev giggles at Benji's reaction. "I thought Chicken Tikka Masala was like Britan's national dish." She says taking a large mouthful and munching happily, showing no sign of discomfort.
Mar 28, 2025 1:10 pm
"It’s only been two," Benji objects, when Emma talks about ‘all those centuries’. He’s not that old. "And I don’t normally eat! I’ve only tried a few different foods… They usually taste bad, but I’ve never tasted anything that hurt before."

He shakes his head, trying to focus on what Emma said before that. "Kidnapped!?" As far as Benji knew, their business with the Administrator had ended at Arundel, so he’s very surprised (and very concerned) to learn that that hasn’t actually been the case and, moreover, that Lady Halifax has apparently been accusing him of kidnapping her. "Why would she say something like that? And what do you mean he’s been extorting you?" This is all very worrying indeed…
Mar 28, 2025 1:56 pm
"I don't get why she would lie about it either, except to protect herself" That whole situation unsettled her, and she wouldn't have brought it up if she hadn't been so concerned about Benji. She had to tell him. "I told the Administrator she was lying, but he still believed her over me. He insisted that you were the one who led Jacob into Arundel in the first place. He also thinks you’re involved in Eliot’s disappearance" she knew how absurd that sounded, and she did try to convince the Administrator it was patently ridiculous, but he didn't see things the way she did

"So, yes, he came after my husband. Almost had him fired. He only backed down when I promised to report anything of interest happening in the city"

You find Circe coming out of the elevator, though she can't have gone much further than the lobby. She looks pensive and maybe a bit disappointed, but she does brighten up when she sees you.

Apparently Zhiyu promised her that he would be able to acquire a delicacy that both of you remember from your childhood and have not been able to get for nearly two decades.

What is this 'delicacy' that you miss? Something your parents or grandparents used to make, maybe? How hard is it to find? Do you actually care?

What do you do?
Mar 29, 2025 5:44 pm
Hearing what Circe shares, Persephone perks up and replies, "He can get us Cai Tuan Zi?? Is from Shenyang too?? Wow, I haven't had those since I was a kid, at nǎi nai’s house..."
She looks more closely at Circe and asks, "Why do you look disappointed?"
OOC:

"Well, I did let Jacob into Arundel – he didn't have an invitation, so I let him copy mine," Benji admits. "But that doesn't have anything to do with anything. I just wanted to bring a friend to the party…" He sighs miserably, and sinks a little lower in his chair. "I’m really sorry about all this, Emma. I was supposed to be watching out for you at the party. I should have known to be more careful. I just never imagined it would get so out of hand…"
Mar 30, 2025 6:04 am
"I should've left the party as soon as I noticed Eliot wasn't there to greet me" she attempted to take some of the blame on herself "You know; he offered me a ride to Arundel. Can you imagine what could've happened if I had gone with him?"

"Anyway," she continued "maybe you should call him before he moves against you. You might get off easy that way"

OOC:
If you want to roll Figure Someone Out against Circe, maybe you can glean a bit more, but remember that the answers you get need to be based in the fiction of what you are doing to learn them, so you will need to dig deeper to get answers. You probably know that the correct way to deal with any transgressions you may have committed on someone else's property would be to go through your superiors, let them discipline you and take the cost out of your hide. But, with Elliot missing it is unclear who your 'superior' is, so who knows what The Administrator might consider appropriate in this case.

What do you do?
Mar 30, 2025 10:32 am
"Yes, I think I should probably talk to him before he starts accusing me of who-knows-what-else," Benji agrees. "Thank you for warning me about this, by the way. I really appreciate it."
OOC:
Should we say Benji owes Emma a Debt for warning him about the Administrator?
Mar 30, 2025 11:27 am
Persephone smirks and and replies, "Are you annoyed that he was entirely uninterested? He’s a bit old for you, isn’t he?" Her tone and smile suggest she’s making some good-natured fun and not serious.

Then she adds, "Besides, he seems like an odd duck, doesn’t he? It was nice of him to return my purse, but, well, I was hoping to put that night at the club behind me, you know? It was not a good experience."
OOC:
Persephone is not trying to upset her sister, but she is goading her a little bit, in part to get her to reveal more about her feelings right now. I will probably try to Figure Someone Out based on her reply, assuming you think that appropriate, vagueGM.

Apr 1, 2025 1:59 am
Benji hums noncommittally and fidgets with the button on his sleeve, not wanting to argue with Emma but unwilling to agree with her about Jacob either. Jacob is his friend and they’ve helped one another on countless occasions. He’s sure that Jacob wouldn’t have invited him and Emma along on the ‘treasure hunt’ if he’d known the kind of trouble they would get in.

"Speaking of warnings, I ran into Teddy earlier this morning and he was in rather a bad way. It seems that Elliot’s underlings have found themselves at the mercy of one of the neighbouring Vampire Lords in Elliot’s absence. I hope you aren’t in danger or anything like that since you’re human so you aren’t subject to vampire territories and politics, but… best be careful."

Your good-matured ribbing seems to have hit a sore-spot, and Circe reacts much more negatively than you expected.

"Oh! Sure!" She exclaims, and you are pretty sure your guests can now hear this exchange all the way down the hall and through the open door, good thing you don't have to worry about neighbors. "Just because you are feeling frumpy compared to your college friends is no reason to take it out on me." Where did that come from?

"I know when I am not wanted." She turns to leave, but then realises that she is not dressed for going out... or, more likely, that she does not have her phone, and is forced to turn back and make to storm past you.

If you don't stop her she will lock herself in her room —slamming the door— and leave a pall on your gathering.

What do you do?
Apr 1, 2025 3:14 pm
Persephone frowns, confused about Circe's reaction. She shakes her head and turns after Circe. "Circe, hun, wait! I didn't mean it like that. I was trying to tease and I made an ass of myself. Again. Hey...Look. I have been a bad sister. You came all this way, and well, you caught me on a really bad night, and I am only now feeling like myself again. So let's try again, ok? First of all, I will go with you to Kickboxing tomorrow. But first, I am going to take you shopping like you have never shopped before! Two words: Company. Card. What do you say?"
OOC:
I know Circe felt sympathy for Persephone when she learned about what happened at the club, and hasn't gotten much of a chance to express it yet, and I suspect Circe would love a shopping day with big sis. If you'd like me to roll +Heart to Persuade an NPC, I can!

"The Administrator DID also blame you for ‘usurping Eliot’s favorite pet’" she recalled "but I don’t think I am important enough for any of them to bother with me. And if I am" she shrugged, and smiled impishly at him "I’ll just tell them to go sort it out with you"

Her smile faded when she heard Circe yelling from the hallway. She didn’t know what the argument was about, but she decided it was best to stay out of it "So what do you make of the weather? Are we going to do anything about it?"

"I know, right?" her voice was tinged with frustration, though for an entirely different reason then Bev's "The folks in Arundel said it's supernatural in origin. It is exactly what I need for my next book. The plot that will tie everything together"

Sure, she did miss the sunlight, and she figured the rain was causing all sort of issues around the city. But having a few disjointed chapters (as good as they were) was ten times more aggravating.

"Do you know anyone, Benji? Someone who’s already digging into this? I need to get in on it"
Apr 1, 2025 10:03 pm
Benji shakes his head, politely ignoring the argument in the hallway outside. "I’m sure there are lots of people looking into it, but I haven’t spoken to them outside of the meeting at Arundel. Probably the wizards would be a good place to start. Or…" He hesitates. "…As reluctant as I am to go looking for Elliot, his sudden disappearance in the countryside stinks of the fey to me. If one went looking in the place he disappeared, it’s possible they might find something relevant to the rain situation. Of course, it’s also possible they might find themselves disappeared too."
Apr 1, 2025 11:42 pm
Persephone laughs and says, "Yeah, that punching bag really did a number on you! Once you've recovered, you and I--and Emma!--can go back, and you can have a rematch!"

She puts a hand on Circe's arm and looks at her earnestly and says, "But tomorrow? It'll be just you and me, just like old times. But this time, we have the company credit card and London as our playground! Sound good?"
Apr 2, 2025 3:41 am
Emma frowns at the mention of Elliot "I tried looking for him, you know. Even called in a favor, but no one could tell me exactly where he disappeared" she stops when she realized something "Do you think Teddy might? Eliot's car had a tracker, and he should be one of the few people who can tell us where and when it went offline" she obviously (and probably foolishly) wasn't as concerned about being kidnapped herself "Else, I could probably call Shelyna Artmitage. I think I should have her number somewhere..."
Apr 2, 2025 7:02 am
Benji shrugs. Trackers and the like are well beyond him. "Possibly! I can give you his telephone number, if you want to talk to him. Otherwise, Ms Artmitage would certainly be a good person to speak to about this."

Persephone laughs and says, "In the movies, they put like a raw steak on a black eye! Want me to order one for you?"

She knows Circe will laugh and find this disgusting, especially given that she’s a vegetarian. Persephone used to be, before the contract. Now, her body is changed; she craves red meat, as rare as possible; workouts with regular people don’t hurt like they used to; she can run on the treadmill endlessly without getting tired. It’s exhilarating; it feels amazing; and it terrifies her. But not because of these changes—because she loves it.

"Ew!" Circe says, predictably. "Though, if you are ordering things... Mr Dōng," —she stifles a giggle at his name, but you notice she does not call him by his first name— "he gave me recipe that he says will clear it right up. We don't have any of the ingredients in the house, maybe you can order them up form me."

It will turn out that some of them are hard to find online, but are the sort of things one could get from a trader in international vegetables. Maybe you can fill that order when you see Zhiyu later?

What do you do?
Apr 2, 2025 12:46 pm
Persephone smirks at Circe’s giggle but otherwise says nothing. To her question about ingredients, she says, "Sure! It would be fun to cook together. We haven’t done that in years. And we won’t have mom getting angry we aren’t doing it right!" she laughs, but something in her laugh betrays the difficult relationship she has with her mother. It is a feeling Circe shares; they both grew up under the tyranny of a perfect mother, after all, one who made Tiger Moms seem tame.

Persephone makes a note to look into Asian grocers as they arrive at her apartment. "Sorry about that! Circe and I were disagreeing about how best to care for that shiner of hers. Apparently she didn’t like my suggestion of a raw steak. But that’s what they do in the movies, right?!?" she says, attempting to smooth over the sounds of arguing from earlier.
Apr 2, 2025 4:04 pm
"Yes, please. I'm sure his number will come in handy" If what Benji had said was true, then Teddy had even more reason to track down Eliot. She was sure she could convince him to share whatever he knew, and that it wouldn't take much effort on her part.

She smiled when Pers and Circe walked back into the apartment. She didn't buy the story about their disagreement, but she would never call them out on it "Sit down, then!" she patted the chair next to her "Food’s getting cold"
Apr 5, 2025 12:30 pm
Emma swipes through her contact list while Pers and Circe settle into their meal. There are dozens of names in there, but one in particular catches her eyes. She heard of The Devil’s Bargain before, a rare bookshop specializing in old books and antiques. She never actually stepped foot inside, but she did glance in a few times from the outside. If both the shop and its proprietor are on the Administrator’s contact list, then there is no doubt they are connected to the supernatural world. And the name of the shop itself... wasn't it a good place to start asking questions about demons?

"Yasmine Deneuve" she lifts her gaze from the screen to look at Benji "Ever heard of her? She owns The Devil’s Bargain, a rare bookstore over on Bookseller’s Row."

She pauses for a moment, then glances at Pers, but then she quickly changes course once she remembers they still need to keep things secret from Circe.

"I was thinking of stopping by... for research. For my next book" she closes her phone and offers a tight-lipped smile "Would either of you want to join me?"

Thankfully Circe was not interested in joining you for 'book research', she is still a little jet-lagged, and sore from the class, so she leaves you to it and goes to bed.

Benji knows, from earlier, that gumboots (wellies) would be useful when navigating Bookseller's Row in Cecil Court, and the 'cobbles' are running with water, with only a narrow band right up against the shops on which people can pass each other. Fortunately the weather is keeping most people indoors (unless they need to nip out for essential supplies (like a good book to read:)), so the alley is empty when you arrive outside The Devil's Bargain.

• Describe what the shop looks (and feels?) like, enter and describe Yasmine.

Persephone has lived in London before and she'd read about the extensive rain as she prepped for her trip, so she was prepared. She wears a thigh-length blue and white waterproof jacket, black rubber rain boots, and she carries a sturdy, wind-proof black umbrella. She walks carefully on the wet cobbles, stepping over puddles, and pushes open the door. A tarnished brass bell on the inside rings quietly as she does so.

Within, the dim light is punctuated by dismal gray sunlight trickling through the clouds and rain, not to mention the dusty panes. Where the light beams are, motes dance and swirl. To the left is a desk with an antiquated cash register on it, as well as a paper ledger and pencil. A few old, comfy leather chairs with side tables provide reading space in the front of the store, but the rest of the space is stuffed with crowded cases, floor to ten-foot ceiling, some with books two layers deep and stacked all higgledy-piggledy. The air has that distinctive smell of dusty old books. An aging gray and white cat lounges atop a pile of old atlases; she turns to regard the group disinterestedly. The owner is not yet in sight.
Apr 7, 2025 7:50 pm
Emma exhales a breath of relief once they finally make it inside the cozy store. She didn't have the luxury of a rain jacket, or boots, so she was forced to step carefully along the narrow band of cobblestones that ran between the row of shops, trying to avoid the rushing rivers of water best she could. She was damp and chilly by the time they made it to the bookstore, and she didn't waste any time closing her umbrella, shaking it quickly, before stepping inside.

She took a quick look around the store. Grimy windows. Dusty panes. An old cash register, that looked like it belonged in the previous century. It felt...old. And somber. Just like the books on the bookshelves. She wondered what kind of tomes Yasmine kept in her bookstore. Whatever it was, she was sure she won't be able to find a copy of any of these books on Amazon.

Her gaze next drifted to the gray and white cat, and she couldn't help but smile softly at it. She absolutely adored cats, though she and David had never been able to adopt one. There wasn't any space for a litter box in their tiny one bedroom apartment, and more; their financial situation would never allow for pet food, or vet visits. She liked the idea of adopting one day, but for now, the cat, curled up and indifferent to her presence, will do.

Stepping closer, she reaches slowly and allowed the cat to sniff the back of her hand, waiting and giving it the choice if to acknowledge her, and perhaps, even allow her to pet it.

Benji blinks sleepily as he steps into the bookstore behind Emma and Persephone. It’s well past his usual bedtime at this point and Yasmine’s cluttered, dimly-lit store feels like an excellent place for a vampire to take a nap. He gives his head a little shake to wake himself up and approaches the desk to wait for Yasmine, greeting the cat with a courteous "Good afternoon," on his way past.

- Persephone, Emma, and Benji -

The cat is indifferent to Emma, welcomes Benji and presents its face for a rub, but hisses at Persephone before pointedly turning away and licking itself in a 'disinterested way', making it quite clear it does not care about the people in its space ... while still tracking their every movement.

The interior of the shop smells pleasant and is warm, all your bundled coats will become uncomfortable in short order.

The cat was in no mood to engage, and Emma respected that. She stepped back without a second though, instead turning her attention to the shelves. The titles were too obscure for her to recognize, and some were written in a language she couldn't place. Too curious to pass on the opportunity, she pulled one of the books out and scanned the first few pages.
Apr 8, 2025 3:15 pm
Persephone frowned as the cat expressed its displeasure with her. It was a reaction she was beginning to expect; dog walkers regularly have their pets behave in 'inexplicable' ways as she passed. Honestly, she doesn't blame them.

She moves to the far aisle of the bookstore from the cat, respecting its space, and begins to wander toward the back of the store, glancing at book spines along the way. She sneezes; apparently the demon taint didn't do away with her allergies.

Benji waits by the desk for a few more moments but he suspects Yasmine’s probably lost in a book somewhere and hasn’t heard the bell. Deciding he ought to go look for her, he weaves his way through the cramped maze of shelves and makes his way toward the back corner of the shop where there is a faded red armchair, a small wooden side table and, indeed, a tiny woman in a fraying brown cardigan and wire-frame glasses poring over a heavy, leather-bound tome. She has long dark hair streaked with grey loosely tied up in a bun and her hands are entirely covered in peculiar sigils and glyphs. A few more tattoos can be seen creeping up the back of her neck. On the little table beside her, a nearly-full cup of coffee has been left to grow cold. She does not look up as Benji approaches, utterly absorbed in her book.

"Yasmine!" says Benji, happy to see her. "Sorry for interrupting. I’ve brought some friends who want to speak to you, if you have a moment."

- Emma and Persephone -

The cat stops grooming itself and hops up the stacks of books and into the rafters, strolling along causally on the beams, still indifferent to your presence, though —even though it is hard to see up there, grey as it is in the dim light— the fact that you can see it means it can see you.

"Benji." Yasmine says warmly, her accent making it almost a purr. "Always happy to do business with your friends." She does not look up, but she does not seem at all surprised that you are there. She always seems to know what is going on in her shop.

She does not ask you where they are, nor push you make introduction right away, she seems more interested in what you might say before your friends are present. She lets the silence hang.

Apr 9, 2025 4:33 pm
Persephone regards the cat from a distance, keeping on the far side of the store. Not out of any fear or discomfort she has, but out of a desire not to upset the kitty with her demonic stink. She sighs; she misses petting cats! Oh well... the cost of doing business I guess...

She turns and heads to the back and joins Benji. She nods to the woman and waits for a pause in conversation to introduce herself.
Apr 9, 2025 5:08 pm
Emma flipped through the pages, finding out much to her annoyance, that the text was written entirely in Latin, and that she could barely make a word of it. But there were illustrations. Pentagrams. Sigils, other cryptic symbols, sprawled across the pages.

"That's so cool!" she murmured, tracing her finger over the pentagram "Do you think these rituals actually work? Can I summon a real demon with this?"

It was an absurd thought, and a dangerous one. Still, the idea was undeniably tempting.

Looking up, she noticed Persephone walking toward the back of the shop, and with a sigh, she shut the book, clutching it tightly against her chest as she followed her to meet the proprietor of the store.
Apr 9, 2025 11:28 pm
"How have you been, by the way? Did you hear Jacob’s left the city for a while? I’ve been trying to keep an eye on his shop while he’s gone, but I don’t think I’ve been doing a very good job. He’s put a pond in the middle of it, for some reason, and all the books are getting moldy… Actually, if you want to, maybe you could go over there with me some time and rescue some of the rarer books before they get eaten by mushrooms. I’m sure Jacob wouldn’t mind. Well, he might, but it’s better than them getting destroyed, I think." Benji happily fills the silence with chatter, until Persephone and Emma appear behind him. "These are the friends I was talking about! Yasmine, this is Persephone and Emma." He gestures to each of them in turn. "Persephone and Emma, this is Yasmine."
Apr 10, 2025 1:10 pm
- Benji -

"You have charge of his shop?" Yasmine asks, maybe you know there are ... or where... protections on the place that would hinder her from entering without permission. Maybe you can give such permissions? "It would be a tragedy if some of those books were lost to rot." Yasmine agrees. "If the place is leaking we should move them out." She looks around her crammed-full place. "I can store them safely." She says, in opposition to all logic.

"You look tired." Yasmine observes. "But we should take a look before more harm is done."

At this point you are joined by your Emma and Persephone.

"It is a pleasure to meet you both." Yasmine says, setting the book aside and reaching for her coffee.

She frowns at the cold cup for a moment before raising it to her lips anyway. The steam from the coffee fogs up her glasses and she sips contentedly.

Neat trick... Persephone thinks.

Persephone nods and smiles and says, "Hello, I'm Persephone. This is a wonderful store you have and an elegant cat guardian, as well."

She pauses awkwardly for a moment and then shrugs, takes a deep breath, and speaks to Emma and Benji, asking permission before launching into it. "So, if I might?" Once they give the go-ahead, Persephone does so, her voice strained as the stress and urgency of her emotions press in on her while she tries to remain calm and controlled.

"So. Ah, I hear that you are something of an expert on... matters infernal. Like, demons. I'm looking for some information pertaining to, um, demonic contracts? How they work, what kinds there are... how someone could escape one... Ahah, asking for a friend, of course. And you know, hypothetically."
Apr 10, 2025 4:14 pm
- Persephone -

"Ah, oui, hypothetical friends." Yasmine says wistfully, smiling at your obvious obfuscations.

"I would not say 'expert'." She brushes aside the complement. "Even in hypothetical contracts. I can tell you —from the stories— that they are varied, and, depending on the level of the demon, well designed to be inescapable." She makes a sad face. "These demons have had millennia to perfect their craft and learn from the clever loopholes mortals have found. Though, they are no more eager to share their secrets with each other than we are, so who knows which blindingly obvious trick might still work. Learning more about the types of contracts the demon in question gravitates towards might reveal a weakness?"

She thinks for a while. "The only «surefire»" and you can heard the quotes —even if they are french— around 'surefire', "way to break a contract is to offer them something more valuable, but there is little more valuable than a soul." She seems to be assuming your 'soul' is what is already in the contract. "Unless one can find some more powerful entity to bind oneself to instead, or something more powerful that can break it..."

She watches the group carefully as the continues. "... maybe a wish from a genie of the lamp? If one could avoid the tricks and traps inherent in that and not end up in a worse situation..."

"What exactly are demons?" Emma felt like she was missing a crucial piece of information here. Several of them, in fact "I know hell exists. But are demons like... primordial evil, like the Bible says? Are they just forces of pure malevolence, or is there more to them? Where they fallen angels? What do they actually want?"

She pauses, not to wait for an answer, but to breathe so she can ask some more: "And does Heaven exist, too? I mean, if Heaven’s real, do you think someone like Persephone's friend could, I don’t know, earn her way into it? Could she somehow get out of the deal that way and not end up in hell?

"What do I look like? A priest?" Yasmine says with —probable— impatience in her voice. "Ask a dozen of them and you will get a dozen —or more— answers. All containing some element of 'mystery of the ... human condition' or some-such rubbish.

"You find an answer you can make bank." She says, but does not sound optimistic about getting people to believe you.

"Well, I didn't want to assume you didn't know anything" Emma said with the characteristic buoyance in her voice when Yasmine grew impatient with her for merely asking a question. "What about summoning demons? Do the rituals in these books actually work?" she taps on the book she picked up from the shelf "I heard some people made pacts with demons without offering them their souls" she is referring to Yasmine herself, of course. If the Administrator notes were accurate* (and she had no reason to believe they weren't), then Yasmine was more than a simple scholar. She got her hands dirty, and acquired all sort of strange abilities in return.
OOC:
*this is the additional information Emma learned as part of her putting a face to a name move. It seems to fit because Yasmine is Power, but if not we can say Emma misunderstood what the Administrator wrote about her.

"That book? No." Yeamine answers, but this does not deny that some books might have just what you are asking about.

"Demons are not going to do anything for you if there is nothing in it for them" She points out. "So you have to offer them something, just expect to get out what you put in... minus the 'trickery and manipulation' quotient all demons add to your deal." She peers at you over her glasses. "What are you looking to offer? What are you hoping to get?" She asks.

Possibly because of her association with Benji, she seems happy to help you out. Not that she won't expect you to repay the favour later (Debts for the Favor).
OOC:
I don't know if a roll or Figure Someone Out would apply here. You can probably get the sorts of answers you are asking for through roleplay, Moves add risk.

Emma never said she wanted to make a deal with a demon, but maybe her questions had given her away. Or maybe Yasmine was just good at reading between the lines.

"I was just being curious" she said cautiously "But I do want to see a summoning. A real one. Just to know if it actually works. That kind of thing doesn't just show up on YouTube."
Apr 11, 2025 1:06 pm
- Emma -

"I would not know." Yasmine sniffs disdainfully at the mention of 'youtube'. "But the books are rather conclusive on the topic: it does work, they seldom agree on how or whether it is a ever a good idea, but there is no doubt that people have been summoning daemons for longer than there has been history.

"I can not say if this is true, but there is strong evidence that Solomon —yes, that 'wise' king— used his knowledge to call up beings to do his bidding, but his requests were too outrageous even for them, and they all refused. And when they refused, he bound them each in whatever containers were handy, there to 'live' out the rest of their days in servitude. One wonders if one of these is what Aladdin found."

She is not admitting that she knows how to do these summonings, maybe she does not want her story written about.

What do you do?
Apr 11, 2025 1:34 pm
Emma wasn’t that arrogant to think she could pull off anything close to Solomon’s feats. But if the legends were true, and if someone had actually left behind one of those 'containers' he used, some vessel or artifact still out there in the world, maybe she didn’t need to match his wisdom. Maybe she could find a shortcut. She wouldn't ask for a lot. And after all these millennia spent imprisoned, the demons he bound were sure to be more open toward fulfilling her wishes...

"…Sorry. I’m getting carried away" she gathered herself, glancing at Persephone "It’s just...this stuff is fascinating. Like, really fascinating."
Apr 11, 2025 11:56 pm
Persephone shifts from one leg to another, clearly uncomfortable. As Emma continues to quiz Yasmine about how to find a genie's lamp, of all things, she becomes annoyed. And when Emma finally admits that she's getting carried away, well, Persephone just sighs and mutters, "Um, you think?"

She shakes her head and her shoulders drop in an expression of defeat. She looks to Yasmine and pleads, "Please. I'm here asking for help. I'm bound to a demon by a contract and I want to know how to get out of it. Or, like, what my options are. I don't want to lose my humanity. I don't want to become..." She shudders.
Apr 12, 2025 1:39 pm
- Persephone -

"I don't suppose you have a copy of this contract?" Yasmine says, sounding exasperated that people would 'sign' anything without having a copy. "No? Get it and you may be able to scour it for loopholes." You notice that she says 'you' and not 'we' for the loophole scouring, but she also has not refused to help you with that endeavour if you make it worth her while. She seems open and friendly, happy to do business.

"Until the contract is due," she points out, though you don't recall if there was an expiry date on yours like there was for poor Howard Winters, "your humanity is your own. You don't have to 'become' anything. Presumably it is just your soul that is forfeit... and who knows what that means. Does it matter once you are dead? The demons sure think they are valuable, but, again, I am not a priest, I don't know..."

Your plan to talk to Wentworth seems like a good idea, maybe try get a copy of your contract while you are at it? Failing that, maybe you can glean clues about the nature of your contract from the types of contracts you broker with others?

What do you do?
Apr 12, 2025 1:55 pm
Benji has been placidly listening to the conversation unfold, but the talk of genies and lamps piques his interest. He opens his mouth to ask Yasmine a question, but immediately shuts it again. He knows he ought to be careful when discussing the lamp Lizabeth found and, as nice as she seems, he’s only just met Persephone. He’s not yet wholly certain he can trust Emma either. He likes her, but she doesn’t always make good choices. Perhaps he should ask Yasmine about this later, when they’re rescuing the books from Jacob’s shop.
Apr 13, 2025 3:19 am
When Yasmine asks about the contract, Persephone frowns and looks away. She sighs. "...No. I... I wasn't in the best place, mentally, when I signed the contract. But now the demon is... demanding I do things... Awful things I don't want to do, and I honestly don't know what happens if I don't do them, or what other options I have. I plan to speak to my...handler today, try to coax some answers out of him. But I'll tell you one thing; my contract may not yet be due, but I'm no longer entirely human. I can...do things, become things, that aren't...that aren't human."

She shakes her head and looks away for a moment, he expression inscrutable. Then she turns back to Yasmine and leans forward, putting a hand on the desk. She speaks with more intensity now, saying, "I'll tell you what. I will find out what I can from my demonic supervisor and then I'd like to return here for your help. What could I offer you in exchange?"
Apr 13, 2025 5:32 am
"Do people still end up in Hell for doing bad things?" she wondered aloud, though she expected the usual 'I’m not a priest' reply from Yasmine "Because you might be earning yourself a place just by holding up your end of that contract. Maybe the only way out is to refuse to play their game, even if it kills you, and face whatever judgment comes from the guy upstairs. A moment of weakness might be forgiven. But sending others to Hell by choice? That might be the one sin you don’t get to walk away from"
Apr 13, 2025 8:05 pm
- Persephone and Emma -

"Life." Yasmine says philosophically. "It is rather addictive. No? It is easy to say: 'I would rather die than do such-and-such', but, when push comes to shove, people will do almost anything to live even a little longer.

"If you can check the contact, maybe you can find what happens if you do not do what you are tasked to do, but it might not be as simple as 'punishment', it may be impossible to refuse?" She sounds a bit more confident about this detail than about all the rest, so far, though how she would know is anyone's guess.

It is interesting that Benji seemed to be unable to enter a home without an invitation. It was not like it would hurt him, right? More like he just 'could not'. Maybe there is something similar at work with the contracts and the job?

Persephone: You could experiment with not obeying, but there may be significant risks.

As Yasmine said, she does not know what happens after death, whether 'hell' is real, or if that is what Persephone is doing. She is tasked with 'collecting their soul', but there is no consensus as to what that is, or what its options were if not collected.

What do you do?
OOC:
It is up to Persephone (and the others) to decide why she 'has to do the job'. Her Dark Patron will not kill her for refusing, but may take away her 'perks'... like the money and the apartment, but also the abilities. We probably don't want to go that route (or not for very long).
I don't know about souls, and heaven and hell. What comes after death is a mystery. You all are welcome to explore it, but you will have to draw your own conclusions. The NPCs will not come up with any single answer.
Apr 13, 2025 10:43 pm
Persephone listens attentively, nodding in understanding. When Yasmine has finished, Persephone straightens, crosses her arms, and a reflective look spread across her face. "I sense that I won't get out of the contract by winning a theological argument with my patron about the nature of the soul or anything like that. I dunno; my gut tells me that's just sophistry. There was something visceral about agreeing, about willingly signing this contract that made it binding. It felt more like... well, like I imagine magic would feel, or ... maybe... like a force of nature. It's just... gravity. I dunno; I've never tried to resist or defy because it all felt so inevitable... Thank you, Yasmine, for speaking to me about this. If it is OK, I may return in the future to discuss this again. But I'd be willing to compensate you somehow for your time in the future."

She turns to Emma and Benji and says, "So next I'm gonna go talk to my demonic supervisor ...ugh... is 'supervisor' even the right word? That feels so... corporate. Huh, actually, this whole demonic organization feels a lot when I was an intern at the law firm of Wolfram & Hart as an undergrad."

She shrugs and smiles, indicating she feels satisfied with things at the moment.
Apr 14, 2025 4:10 am
"Gravity pulls everything down, but people still figured out how to fly"
Emma's stubbornness and willfulness, with the usual hint of arrogance, was also optimistic in a way.

With the conversation wrapping up, she (somewhat reluctantly) let go of the old book she'd been hugging and set it back on Yasmine’s desk.
"Thanks for seeing us" she smiled lightly at her "Your shop, and collection, are really cool. I’ll definitely be dropping by again."

As they stepped out into the street and Persephone mentioned heading off to deal with her demonic supervisor, she gave her a short nod:

"Yes; checking your contract does seem like the right play now."
She paused, looking away from the two of them "I think I’m gonna talk to Kat. Her sugar daddy invited me to some kind of convention."
She didn’t elaborate. She figured 'Sin' believed she and Kat were in the same line of work. Henry was fond of escorts, and she knew from that dinner party she wasn't the first woman to be seen in his company. Or maybe 'Sin' invited her for a different reason altogether? She would have liked to think so, but she didn't exactly leave an impression that she was anything other than an empty airhead [ref] the last time they met.

"You said she was involved in some demon cult, right?" she turned to look back at Pers "I want to see what’s really going on there"
Apr 14, 2025 4:36 am
Persephone heads back out and opens up her umbrella, scowling at the rain. She turns to Emma and replies, "Yeah, I guess I’ll go see him now. Maybe get some answers."

When Emma mentions a Kat, Persephone clarifies, saying, "What I said was that Kat had the smell of demonic contracts on her, but she herself was not contractually bound. I think her captivity is of a more mundane sort, you know? Like she has a rich guy who pays her to be his arm candy. And I think HE is the one working with demons."

She sighs and says, "Well I best get to it. Benji, it was a pleasure to meet you. I hope to see you again soon. Emma, I’ll text you after I talk to the guy. Take care, hun." She gives Emma a hug and a kiss on the cheek. She steps back, waves to the others, and heads off to visit Wentworth.

"It is called 'binding'." Yasmine points out when Persephone talks about gravity. "Some sort of, how you say? 'Fundamental force'? But there are ways around such things if you have the means." She nods in agreement to Emma's point about flying.

When Persephone suggest coming back Yasmine seems pleased. "Of course, dear. I would be delighted." She replies. She sounds genuine enough, and curious about what you learn.

Even with an umbrella and a raincoat, the short walk left Emma both chilled and damp. She was relieved to be back in her apartment, and grateful that it was already warm and cozy when she arrived (though she dreaded to think what her electric bill would look like this month!). She expected to find Sarah on the couch, but the living room was empty. She called out her name, but when there was no answer, she moved down the hallway, glancing into the bedroom before spotting her in the bathroom.

"Happy to see you’re already up" she said as she leaned against the doorframe. Sarah stood at the sink, wrapped in one of Emma’s bathrobes, slowly brushing her hair. It was late afternoon, but Sarah had slept through the morning, as usual, and was just beginning her routine. With everything that had happened today, it was already getting late, and she knew she only had a short time to talk before David got home from work. She didn’t want to waste any time. "I saw Chablis earlier today" she paused, and checked her reaction.

"I hope so too! It was very nice to meet you," Benji responds to Persephone with a smile.

After saying goodbye to Emma and Persephone, he ducks back inside to fetch Yasmine. "Let’s go save some books, shall we?" he says, resolutely chipper despite his growing exhaustion. If they get this done quickly, maybe he can get at least a few hours sleep before Miriam visits later this afternoon…

Persephone smiles at Yasmine, a sincere and appreciative smile. After all, this was a woman with obvious power and knowledge, open to the possibility of helping her, but she also seemed genuinely interested, and interesting, if Persephone was being honest.

She takes her leave of Emma and Benji, glad for old friends and new. She gets in a car service and directs the driver to take her to Wentworth's office address. As she rides, she sends a text to Zhiyu, proposing a meetup in a few hours.

"Yeah? How's she doing?" Sarah asks, trying to sound casual, and mostly seeming uninterested if a little bit guilty.

"Did you ...?" You can't be sure what she was about to ask, but it probably was about what you told Chablis, maybe a concern of if you told her where to find Sarah. It seems like Sarah completely cut off that part of her life and accepted her new reality without qualms.

"Did you get my charger?" Sarah asks instead. Again, the only thing she seems to have any attachment to is her phone.

The bathroom is spotlessly clean, and the rest of the house has been tidied up after the party last night, there is a load of washing on the go as well.

As you leave, the cat slips out the door. Yasmine makes a grab for it, but it predicted that and easily evades her. "Ach!" Yasmine, exclaims in frustration, but does not try to get the cat back. "It is raining, you know." She calls, but the cat sits, just out of reach and blinks at her, drops falling on its head causing it to occasionally twitch an ear, but seemingly unbothered by the water.

It is a short walk down the alley to Jacob's shop. Yasmine hesitates on the threshold.

It’s hard to catch Emma lost for words. This was one of these rare cases.
She had lots she planned to say. About how she knew Sarah was a sex worker. About how she figured out that she and Chablis weren’t just roommates. They shared a bed. They were lovers. She was going to say that she knew Sarah must have suspected what Chablis was all along, else why would she have screened all her calls?

None of it seemed to matter now.

Sarah just stood there, so cool and casual, like none of it ever touched her. Indifferent. Almost heartless.

How ironic that Chablis, the supposed monster, had shown more compassion than the girl in front of her. Chablis was worried sick about Sarah. Haunted by guilt. Barely holding on, while Sarah looked more concerned about her charger than her former girlfriend.

"She’s a vampire" she finally said "But you already knew that, didn’t you?"
It wasn’t a question.
"I think it’s safe for you now. As long as you keep your distance from her"

She didn’t say the rest, but she hoped Sarah would get the hint; that it was time for her to move on and find her own place.

On the entire drive to Wentworth's office, Persephone had been steeling her will for the confrontation with him. She played out in her mind's eye scenes of her barging in, catching him off guard, perhaps interrupting an important meeting, and demanding answers. When she arrived, however, she found her plans entirely disarmed. She could only stammer and accept his welcome.

"Uh, um, sure. Yes, thanks. Wait, how did you...?" Then anger began to arise in her. "How did you know I was coming here? I am tired of this nonsense. I want answers. About how you knew, about other supernatural beings, about my contract, about everything!"

She stepped toward him, adopting her most effective power pose, when she glanced down and saw the beverage. "Oh! Is that... Is that a cup of the Kenyan Washed Kiambu Coffee from Yara Estate? That's... that's $400 a cup! It won bean of the year last year! How..."

All of her fire was gone. She sat down, took the cup into her hands and brought it to her face, bathing in the aroma, sipping it, rolling it around in her mouth, and finally swallowing.

"Ahhh.... Oh... Oh that is a damn fine cup of coffee..." She looked at Wentworth and spoke, this time with only mild vexation in her voice. "I do want answers, you know."

"Of course." He says about the coffee. "Only the best for my favourite worker. Your handling of Howard Winters was masterful."

He takes a sip from his own cup —it looks like milky tea— and studies you. "What is it you want to know?" He asks, sounding completely reasonable.

As you hold the door and invite Yasmine in she takes a hesitant step over the threshold, her cat nips in quickly just before she does. As her foot lands on the inside floor she looks both relieved and more than a little excited.

She sees the pond in the middle of the floor and looks up, not seeing any leaks in the ceiling she looks confused. "Maybe we should check upstairs first?" She suggests. "See where that is coming from?"

Emma was still convinced Sarah had known Chablis was a vampire all along. Her insistence that she hadn’t only served to irritate her. But there was no point pushing it. Sarah wouldn’t admit to it, and she didn't care enough to drag it out.

"Yes. It was," she confirmed, again "And since she’s not a danger to you, as long as you keep your distance, I think it’s time you found a place of your own."

She made sure there was no room for misunderstanding this time. She’d taken Sarah in temporarily, not as a permanent arrangement. The apartment was small. Too small, really, barely fit her and David, and having another woman around didn’t give them enough feedom to be intimate with each other, physically or emotionally. She didn’t want to live like that anymore.

"Maybe with a different roommate this time" she tried to lighten the mood. She had no intention to throw her out to the streets that very moment. She knew finding a new place could take some time, and she didn't want Sarah to think she was unwelcome in her home, or that she didn't care about her and her predicament.

"Start looking for a new place, alright? I can help if you want. It doesn't have to be today, or next week, but start making plans.

"We could, but I was up there earlier looking for bird food and I didn’t see anything leaking," says Benji, crouching by the edge of the pond to get a closer look. "Anyway, I don’t actually think it’s a leak — I think it’s a pond. There’s duckweed on the surface, see, and I swear I saw a frog in here earlier."

Persephone savors the coffee for a while, until the name of Howard Winters reaches her. Her mood suddenly darkens and the coffee tastes like ash in her mouth.

She sets the cup down and turns to him, a serious and intense gaze on her face. She says, "First, I want a copy of my contract. I want all the details about our...arrangement. Second, I want a primer on the supernatural; I need to know about vampires, ghosts, werewolves, wizards, the fae, all of it. And what is our patron's views on these beings? Are there factions in London I should know about? How am I expected to behave when I meet these creatures? And what about the agents of other demons?"

She crosses her arms, suggesting she will not be satisfied until she gets what she wants.

Sarah looks disappointed by the idea of getting a new roommate, she thought she already had the best roommate ever, but you are telling her you don't want to keep being her roommate, and she does not know why.

She takes it in stride, though, as she does all such facts. "How am I going to pay for a new place." She whines, not really asking, but also sort of hoping you will provide an answer.

"A «frog»?" Yasmine says in a dubious tone of voice, she is not sure if you are mocking her French heritage, but thinks that unlikely. She looks at the yellowing duck-weed. "No ducks, however?"

Looking round the shop she seems overwhelmed. "This will take hours. Days, even." She says, assessing the sheer number of books. She is right, moving all the valuable books will take a while, and you are already tired.

"I have a trolley, back at my shop." Yasmine says. "If we can find a dry spot we can search for and sort the most valuable books, then wheel them over. But it will still take many trips." She sounds quite enthused by the idea of sorting all the new books. "Hé, regarde! This could be useful!" She says, finding a large roll of plastic, probably left over from Jacob's window repair work last week. "We can make a tent."

"You didn't get a copy of your contract?" Wentworth tuts. "That's not like you. I don't have it." Wentworth likes using the insulation of being middle-management to disclaim responsibility for both what you do, and for what is done to you. Even though you have no way of proving it, you might suspect that he has, at least, seen your contract, but a hearsay recounting of the terms is not going to help you find a loophole... unless it is in his own best-interest. You may have to find a way to wangle the details from your Dark Patron directly.

"My my! You have been busy if you have had run-ins with that whole list." Wentworth exclaims when you rattle off your list. He knows for a 'fact' that you have not met two from that list, and you know that you have only met, like 1½ —depending on how you categorize Yasmine and Zhiyu.

"You can always phone the hotline and ask, you know." He says, probably hesitant to give up the levels of control he is used to. "That is what they are there for." (That, and to keep a record of who and what you encounter.)

"Is there anything you need to know right now?"

"You can do what you were doing before" she said plainly "or something else. Whatever you want"
Emma didn’t associate any stigma with Sarah’s line of work. It WAS work. Sarah couldn’t expect to lie on the couch all day, play with her phone, and expect someone else to pay for her food and her rent.
"There are plenty of jobs out there. Maybe not as high paying, but enough to get by, especially if you find another roommate" she tries to encourage her "you’re young, and capable. I’m sure you’ll find something"

But can Sarah go back to Velvet Sin? She walked out on that job, and while Gene seemed concerned about her, Ray seemed mostly concerned that he still had her last paycheck, and that that was cluttering up his desk. She might be able to go back, but she has shown no interest in doing so.

You don't know what such dancing paid, but, if her flat was anything to go by, it was not a lot.

Do you speak to Gene, maybe just to tell him Sarah is alright? Or to warn him about Chablis —and sound like a crazy-person? Or do you try to get Sarah to stand on her own two feet and go back there herself? Or, do you try to help her find another job, or send her out on her own?

Persephone stares daggers at Wentworth when he condescends to her about not getting a copy of her contract. And she grits her teeth and bites her tongue when he intimates that he knows she has not met all of those creatures. She will worry later about how he might now that. For now, she replies, "Well, one of my contacts informed me of their existence, and I have reason to believe them. So." She feels her blood pressure rising as he continues to insult her obliquely.

But when he mentions a hot line, she stops short. What hotline? she wonders to herself. Oh, I see what he's doing...

She sits back in her chair, crosses her arms, and smiles. She feels her anxiety and anger subside and she says, "Ah yes, of course. The hotline. How could I forget? So silly of me. Care to share the number?"

She looks at him for a moment, feeling somewhat smug that she had seen through his little game of manipulation designed to make her feel inferior. She allows the feeling to pass and then she adds, "Well, right now, I have a question about someone I met who carries the taint of a different demon. Or, rather, I met one of their ...possessions? A kept woman, I believe. I can only assume another demon would be a competitor of our Patron's, so I may disrupt their operation, or at least diminish it. Think of it as a gift to our Patron."

Persephone's stomach flipflops as she recalls the words of the venture capitalist who had recruited her, who had wooed her, and eventually brought her to sign the contract. He spoke in similar ways, offering gifts that were in fact traps, like baited hooks, meant to benefit no one but him and his masters.

"I don't trifle with such details." Wentworth says about the hotline number. "It should have been part of your orientation. It should be in your phone." He waves his hand a bit ineffectually in your general direction when he talks about 'your phone', you don't think he has a very strong grasp of what it means for a number to 'be in a phone', and you think you saw his mouth trying to form the word '-book' at the end.

Sure enough, if/when you check, there is a 'helpline' number in your contacts, and you did not put it there. It is an American number, so maybe you need to ask them for the local number, or you could just keep using the international one, its not like you are paying the bill.

"A 'kept woman', you say?" He sounds intrigued. "Well, we can't be having that." He does not actually order you to 'free her' or 'bring her into our fold', but his tone makes it pretty clear that doing so 'unofficially' and 'for your own reasons' would be delightful... unless 'she' happens to be 'kept' by an ally, and unless you happen to be clumsy enough to be provably responsible for 'their' loss of an asset. Unless you are willing to name names (you, or Emma could easily have 'Kat's' full name), you can't get any more details about what she means to anyone.

Emma knew one thing for sure. Going back to Velvet Sin would be a mistake. Maybe Sarah could get her old back job, but there was a risk she would run into Chablis. As much as Chablis cared about Sarah, she was still getting the hang of being a vampire, and was potentially dangerous.

She sighed inwardly to herself

"You can find another club. The Velvet Sin wasn't even that good. Or find a job waiting tables somewhere"

Tiredness started to descend upon her. She needed some rest herself, after everything that happened today, and all the blood she donated. And she still needed to talk with David. And maybe Teddy...

"You don’t have to figure it out tonight. Just… start looking tomorrow. Job first. Then when you know what you’re making, you can start looking for an apartment in the right range."

- Emma -

Sarah does not look overly keen on the idea of another club, you observed that she seemed to really enjoy dancing, but maybe taking her clothes off at the same time was not what she planned on when coming to London.

"Waiting would mean talking to people." She says in a small voice. You know from experience that she is not inclined towards speaking. Even at your writers' group, among 'friends' she needed copious encouraging each time before she would read any of her work, and then she only did so by hiding behind the page... even if the page was a phone-screen... and pretending no one was there. It is possible she has spoken more since moving in with you than in her whole time in London. Unfortunately what you have seen of her writing is nowhere near good enough for you try get her a book deal, or a gig at the papers.

"You could always wash dishes. Or stock shelves."
It was about time Sarah started taking responsibility for her life. Emma wasn’t going to solve every problem she had, even if she could. Sarah’s anxiety wasn’t something a little pep talk could fix. That kind of thing needed therapy. And time.

"I’m not saying it’ll be easy," she added, a bit softer this time "But you’re not going to get better just lying here either."

Benji frowns to himself at Yasmine’s declaration that this could take hours or even days. He obviously can’t stick around for days, but he should probably stay and help for at least a few hours. This was his idea, after all. He sighs, shoulders slumping slightly in resignation. No sleep at all then.

He rubs his sleepy eyes with the back of his hand, gets back on his feet, and begins helping Yasmine assemble a ‘tent’ out of the plastic to try to separate the pond from the rest of the shop. When she leaves to fetch the trolley, he fishes his phone out of his pocket and decides he better call Miriam and let her know not to come around until later in the evening, since it looks like he won’t be home for a few more hours.

"That was yesterday!" Miriam says, sounding miffed. "I came round and you were not there. Lizabeth was so worried. Said you had not come home all day!" That can't be right, you saw Miriam yesterday, or last night.

Yasmine has returned toot sweet with the trolley laden with portable wire-shelves, but is not paying much attention to your phone call. "Ooh! Would you look at that! Strange that Jacob would have something like this!" She says, holding up an antique bible. "It is American!" Yasmine seems quite content to spend the rest of the week pottering around in here, nipping back to her own shop if customers call, she has left a note on her door.

Sarah was curled up on the couch, face turned away, crying quietly on the couch. Emma didn't look. She hasn't looked in her direction for the last fifteen minutes. The apartment was too small to offer any real privacy to any of them, so the least she could do was give her some space. She didn’t feel good about how their conversation ended either. She had no intention of taking care of Sarah for the rest of her life, but forcing her to take steps to move out did sour her mood, especially after she'd seen how she took it.

She kept herself busy. A load of laundry already done, dinner nearly finished. When David finally walked through the door, she swiveled to look at him, brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, and offered him a tight-lipped smile, then turned her attention back toward the cutting board.

"Hey," she said, and gestured at the table, averting her eyes from the couch, and her husband "Dinner’s ready. How was your day?"

Benji cannot help but smile at Yasmine’s giddy enthusiasm as she digs through Jacob’s collection, but the smile is quickly replaced by a furrowed brow as he tries to make sense of what Miriam’s telling him.

"But we only made the plans last night!" he protests, confused. "And I was with Lizabeth this morning. We had a meeting with the Night Sisters." He’s admittedly not the best at keeping track of time, but not so much so that he could lose an entire day without realising it, surely?

Emma kissed David back, letting her hand rest at his side just for a moment before stepping back to turn the electric stove off. She wanted to enjoy the evening, to sit down and eat together like a normal couple in a normal apartment, but Sarah's quiet sobs from the couch were suffocating. She couldn't sit down and enjoy her meal while she was crying her heart out.

"I’m glad" she rubbed his arm when he told her about the vetting process "I hope it will all get sorted out quickly. You deserve that promotion"

She turned to the table, dinner plated and ready, but didn’t sit. Instead she glanced toward the couch, and sighed to herself:

"Sarah. Would you like to eat something? Come join us at the table?"

Persephone looked through her contacts and, sure enough, there it was. Hotline. She sighed and muttered, "Ah yes. Of course."

She shook her head in frustration, looked at Wentworth, and said, "What orientation? There was no orientation. That's a shite attempt at humor, Wentworth." Persephone had lived in London briefly before, in college, and had picked up a few Britishisms, like shite, loo, and so on, which were starting to return, though she did not always employ them perfectly.

When the conversation turned to Kat, Persephone eyed Wentworth, wondering if she was about to make a mistake. She shrugged internally and said Kat's full name, as well as what she knew of Kat's 'owner.' "Ring any bells?" she asked.

"I don't know how you do things over in the colonies." Wentworth says when you deny any orientation. "But we have a long history over here. There are feuds that have existed since before your country was born, I did not plan to be spending today briefing you on etiquette and who not to cross." He seems to be suppressing a sigh at your ignorance. "I will give you a high-level overview." He says. "But check with the hotline before you put your foot in your mouth, 'K?"

He spends some time going over interminable details about who is who in London, including mentioning concerns over the state of the weather, and that some are trying to blame the demons for that —but, to the best of his knowledge, they have nothing to do with it— he mentions chaos in the streets because of a missing vampire lord, and scoffs at your mention of fairies and werewolves, informing you that are no such thing ... in London ... anymore.

Emma did not go into enough detail [ref], and Wentworth can only tell you that Kat is not significantly on anyone's radar, she is 'free game', 'probably just a pawn for the taking'. He is interested in the weekend retreat and implies that you could look into that, 'on you own time', 'that is not your job'.

"But you are here for work." He reminds you. "Tomorrow you need to start working on a new acquisition..."

• Who do you need to broker a contract with? What sort of person are they?
• Is this the first time you have had to start the process with someone who has not been approached before?
You are not expected to close the deal tomorrow, but Wentworth does expect a progress report by end of day.

I'm glad my past roll re: Circe is coming back to haunt me!
Persephone pays close attention to Wentworth, commenting along the way. "Oh, yes, Eliot," she says, when he mentions a missing vampire lord. She does this, of course, to throw him off; he would not expect her to know the vamp's name. But Emma and Benji discussed Eliot's disappearance and Persephone made the guess that they must be the same person. "And the demon who owns a bookshop on Bookseller's Row?" Again, Persephone only overheard Emma and Benji, but she is authentically curious if Benji's demon friend is an ally or enemy of her patron. Finally she nods in acceptance of his suggestion that she might look into this weekend affair.

When he turns to the matter of her job, her heart sinks--she'd somehow have to juggle this with her sister's day out. She did not expect this to end well, but she'd pulled off such antics before, she realized, as she recalls the time she brokered a funding deal for her startup at a cocktail party while also taking her one of her finals online on her phone.

Her target is Viviana Norwood, an Italian-British woman, about 30, who works in banking tech at HSBC. Her specialty is managing the tech systems that deliver trade information for stock brokers and investment bankers in real time, globally. She is queer, but keeps it secret, because her banking superiors are very conservative. She is single and lives in the City.

This will be Persephone's first recruitment from the get-go. She'd been a liaison and handler for those already in process. Harold Winters was her first "close."

Persephone will try to make first contact with Viviana while out shopping with Circe. She hopes that Circe's cluelessness will reinforce the "accidental" nature of the encounter. Which means, YES, Persephone will be involving her sister, if only as cover. She will not inform Circe of any of this, of course.

What Emma really wanted was a quiet moment alone with her husband. She kept the conversation light, asked about his day, and passed around the pasta she’d made, all the while staying gentle and polite with Sarah. If Wentworth is surprised or impressed that you know about Elliot, he shows no sign beyond a small gesture of confirmation that you have the right name.

"A ... bookshop ... in Bookseller's Row?" He says, sound only mildly interested, but you get the impression he did not know about Jacob. How can that be? Maybe you can learn more about his situation? There might be hints about possible loopholes to freedom there? Pity Jacob is not around, but, from what Emma implied, he may have been trouble.

"Anyhoo: See how you get on with Ms Norwood and report back." Wentworth says, he enjoys lording his knowledge over you, and may let more slip if you keep him talking, but you are going to be late for Zhiyu at this rate.

"…You think so?" Benji asks, anxiously. He doesn’t want to believe that this might be that, but he can’t think of many other explanations. It just doesn’t make any sense. There aren’t even any gaps in his memory where the time could have been lost… Well, either way, maybe it’s not such a bad idea for Lizabeth to go stay with Miriam for a bit, anyway. Miriam might be able to keep a closer eye on Lizabeth than he can and Lizabeth could keep Miriam company.

"I… I suppose if that’s what she would prefer…" he concedes, hesitantly. "Do you still want to come over for tea this evening?"

Persephone glances at her phone and sees that she must leave if she's to make it to meet Zhiyu on time. The guilt she still feels for assisting his brother's death, plus her general annoyance with Wentworth, are more than enough to overcome her curiosity about what else she might be able to pry out of the man.

She stands and says only, "Understood." She turns to walk out, wishing that her lack of courtesies when leaving would sting, but she doesn't think he is capable of feeling anymore.

Once out of there, she is able to breathe more freely. She checks the address and finds her way to meet Zhiyu.

As always, David is polite and friendly to Sarah, not commenting on the scene he came home to. As always, Sarah is quiet and says little. Dinner proceeds without indecent.

Sarah is still in the habit of sleeping during the day, and, you can now guess, working nights. If she wants to get work outside that industry she may have to go out looking during the day. Spending the whole night awake on her phone, as usual, probably won't aid her in that... but that also expects her to go out, and, aside from when you dragged her out to buy clothes, you don't think she has left the flat.

Head of the line is an old, Chinese woman, she hands Zhiyu a sheaf of papers. He indicates for her to sit beside him, then, as she leans in close, he reads the letter to her. It is not English and you can't hear the words, but you get the impression that he is relaying news from home. It takes a while. Next is similar, an old couple hand him paper, it appears he is interpreting their utility bill for them, explaining the costs and offering advice about some particular line-item. There is more like this, general life stuff, it puts you in mind of a village. Next is a girl who has clearly been crying, you can hear her loud voice as she alternates between demanding retribution for abandonment, and begging Zhiyu to find her boyfriend who is missing. Someone shows him something under their clothes, and he writes out a note, directing them to certain items in his stall and elsewhere.

Most of these seem to be one-sided translations. Only about one in every five people offer anything in return, but Zhiyu amicably dispenses his advice and services, gratefully taking what is offered when anything is.

Benji makes a small, wordless noise of distress in response to Miriam’s tone. He doesn’t at all like when people are angry at him and, in this case, he doesn’t even fully understand what he’s done wrong. He’s pretty sure Miriam was lying about being busy but, beyond that, he’s not sure what he said or didn’t say to upset her. If she actually wanted to come over, why would she have pretended to be busy? Did she want him to accuse her of lying? That can’t be right. People don’t usually like when you point out that they’re lying, even when it’s obvious. He chases his thoughts around in bewildering circles for a few moments, trying to understand, before giving up and simply blurting out, "Are you mad at me? Why are you mad at me?"
Apr 21, 2025 6:58 am
Emma just needed to vent. She didn’t need David to fix anything, offer his perspective, or, god forbid, question her decision. She just needed him to support her, even if he didn’t fully understand the situation. It didn’t solve anything, but it left her feeling a little more settled.
With the faintest lift of energy, she moved to something else entirely.

"I’ve been invited to another high-society function over this weekend. They’re holding it at The Lanesborough," she got up from the bed and undid the band in her hair, letting the blonde strands fall loose over her shoulders, then slipped off her shoes. She was already thinking about her shower – it’s just what she needed to ease all the tension from today.

"I’m thinking of going" she continued "There’ll be members of the House of Lords, billionaires, High Court judges... it’s like a secret society of the most powerful people in Britain"

She glanced over at him, to see how he would react

"They’d make excellent villains for my next book. Don’t you think?"

Most of the people in the Zhiyu queue know each other and are chatting among themselves. The white woman does not quite fit in, but does seem to know a few of the locals, at least enough to wave in greeting. She gives you a hesitant finger-wave.

"Yes, can you believe it?" She didn't miss the hint of jealousy in her husband's voice, but didn’t let it slow her down. It wouldn’t hurt him to miss her a little now and then. "I don’t even know what they’ll be doing, and I don’t care. I just want to be in the room, you know?"

She didn’t bother hiding her excitement. In fact, she let it rise deliberately, knowing exactly how hard it would be for him to say no when she looked this eager. Still, she tried to assuage some of his concerns:

"And it’s in London. If anything comes up, I can be back in twenty minutes"

David still has not seen the bill for the taxi ride from your last outing, so being in London carries a bit less weight than it might otherwise have. He can see that you are really keen on this, and does not want to stand in your way, but there was an expectation that, whatever you were doing, you would be 'home by midnight', and he has been very generous with his interpretation of 'midnight'.

"Are they getting you another dress?" He asks, slightly teasing about how good you looked the last time, and reminding you that there was a tacit agreement that you would wear that dress for him some time. Your previous meeting with Henry's people was 'smart' but the dress you fished out of your wardrobe was sufficient. This was described as 'a retreat', which sounds a bit more casual, but maybe the move from the seaside to an expensive hotel affected that? They did not give you a dress-code, you may have to pack a wide selection?

The club dresses Emma owned were one wardrobe malfunction away from a scandal. Silhouettes, plunging necklines, and hemlines so short she had to be careful whenever she took a seat, were hardly appropriate for high-society events. She would have to get something new. Something classy. Sophisticated. More... boring.

Maybe Henry can be persuaded to cover it. He probably spends more on wine than she does on rent, so he wouldn't even blink at the cost. She made a mental note to give him a call tomorrow. Sweet talk him a little and make it sound essential. Because it was!

To David, however, she just gave a small shrug "I’ll see if I can get them to cover a clothing expense" her lips then curled into a teasing smile "Did you like the last one?"

Persephone smiles, nods, and waves back politely, and then turns back to face forward. She had to admit she was curious, but couldn't think of a pretense to strike up a conversation. Besides, she'd have to step out of line and she was near the front.

She was still uncertain of what she would say to Zhiyu.

"Just Miriam," says Benji, scowling at his phone in a mixture of bewilderment and frustration. "I’ve apparently misplaced a day somewhere, although I don’t think that’s what she’s upset with me about, exactly."

"Everyone liked the dress." David says. "Except my mother, but it is her job to disapprove. That's what mother-in-laws are for."

Maybe the talk of sexy dresses has got him riled up, or maybe he does not want to continue talking about other men buying you dresses, David is not really the jealous type, but he still needs to lay his claim. "You coming to bed?" He asks teasingly.

You still feel icky from the blood-loss and what you have been through today, and will find you have significant bruising from where the first tube was yanked from your arm —straight out, fortunately, so there is no tearing, just the puncture wounds in both arms, and a purple mark spreading up and down you arm— maybe you can claim 'blood donation', and technically that would not be a lie.

And now, in surprisingly quick order, it is time for you to work out what you would say to Zhiyu.

The pair of men in front of you seem to have had a dispute, and Zhiyu renders judgement, both agree and look a little sheepish about what they were arguing about and that they did not see the solution themselves.
Did you stand close enough to overhear their dispute? If so, what was it about and what do you think of Zhiyu's judgement?

Now it is your turn.

"Miriam... the vampire slayer?" Yasmine sounds surprised that there is a relationship there, but she knows you do keep strange company, which is part of the reason she introduced you to Jacob despite such friendships being uncommon.

"You say you 'misplaced a day'?" She asks. "How does that work?"

"Your mother liked that dress too!" She protested, a hint of a smile on her lips "She was genuinely worried I might catch a chill in this weather, that’s all" she obviously knew better, but didn’t want waste time talking about it. She did welcome the shift in the conversation, though his invitation didn’t stir her the way she needed it to.

She didn’t want to be asked. She wanted to be taken. Pressed against the wall like he was starving. Pushed down. Hair yanked. She wanted him to lose control a little. To need her that badly. Not invite her into bed like he was offering her tea and blanket.

Still, she stepped closer, resting her hand on his chest. Her voice dropped into a soft, almost teasing hum, the ‘t’ mispronounced slightly, almost like a different letter of the alphabet. "Are you going to tuck me in, then?"

She didn’t care about the bruises. She had a plausible story about them (all absolutely true, from her point of view). Besides, she was sure David wouldn’t give them a second thought once the clothes came off...

"That’s the one! She’s a good friend of mine," Benji confirms. "Anyway, I’m not sure how it happened, but it turns out today is actually tomorrow and I can’t remember yesterday. That is to say, Miriam and I made plans for this afternoon, only, apparently, that was actually yesterday afternoon, which is very confusing because I thought we only made the plans last night."

Persephone continues to people watch, and her curiosity about Zhiyu grows. She watches him serve as a translator for an old woman dealing with government paperwork. She hears him speak in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and even French at one point. When she gets near the front, she even eavesdrops on two men having a surprisingly complex debate about import laws, jurisdiction, and international investment, which he seems to settle to both men's satisfaction.

When she arrives at the front of the line, She smiles and says, "Hello! This is the right time, yes? You seem so busy! We can reschedule if that's more convenient for you..." She gestures at the line of people behind her, but adds, "I'd like to talk, but I don't want to be a burden."

Maybe it is that you were still heading for the shower, or the stress of work, or the long days in the cold ... or maybe David just is not feeling all that 'manly'? He has been shunted to the side by your other, higher priorities, and 'his woman' is being clothed and supported by other, unknown men, in a manner he can not compete with. His big promotion was a way to reclaim some of his mojo, but even that was taken away from him, only to be salvaged by his wife's actions. He is bearing up, but the week has been more than a bit emasculating.

Zhiyu seems to have been focused on the people right in front of him and not the never-ending queue, so he seems surprised to find you in front of him all of a sudden.

"This time is as good as any other." He says, sounding hesitant and unprepared for this conversation. This is quite a contrast with the self-assurance you observed with those before you.

He looks a little panicked at the people. "We can talk here. Unless you would rather we dismiss everyone..."

Possibly he does not know where the conversation is headed, maybe a more private place would be better, especially if you might mention the demon-deal to help him understand. You got the impression he knows a little about the strange world you find yourself in, but he might no know the relevant details.

Emma’s gaze softened when she looked into his eyes. She stepped in, closer, close enough that he could feel her soft breaths. She was always the one to add the spice to their bedroom. The mischief to their routines. Her husband was tired. Defeated, maybe, after the kind of week he had. Maybe he, too, needed to feel desired. And she knew exactly how to stoke that fire.

L’appétit vient en mangeant.
Desire grows with action.

The hand resting on his chest began to slide lower...

*****

Emma lay still for a moment, her hand resting on her husband's chest, rising and falling in time with his breath. She smiled faintly and pressed a kiss to his shoulder, then slipped out from under the warm sheets with a satisfied grace, her fingers drifting through her tousled hair as she padded toward the bathroom.

She closed the door behind her and paused in front of the mirror, gazing at her reflection with a pleased, private, curved smile.

She liked what she saw.

She turned slightly, admiring the lines of her curves. She didn't consider herself to be vain. She did win the genetic lottery, but that wasn't enough. She worked for that body. Maintained it. Watched what she ate. Skincare. Workouts. Posture. Keeping hydrated. It required discipline, more than some would realize.

Why shouldn’t she be proud?

With a little grin, she reached for her phone on the counter, and snapped a couple of photos of herself. Nothing she would ever post, of course. But maybe something to send David one morning when he was stuck at the office. A reminder of what waited for him at home.

Just as she was about to set the phone down, a stray thought surfaced, completely absurd in contrast.

"Oh, shit" she quickly thumbed through her contact list

"Thanks for covering the takeout tonight" she quickly typed to Bev
"You really shouldn’t have. How much do I owe you?"

Benji shakes his head. "No, I haven't slept since yesterday... or the day before yesterday, I suppose." The whole situation is very confusing, and his lack of sleep certainly isn't helping to make sense of it. "Have you ever heard of such a thing before? Days going missing?"

"Do you feel like you have been awake for two days?" Yasmine asks, only half paying attention in her distraction over a precious book that is currently too wet to be opened. She will need to carefully dry and part the pages.

It feels like you have been awake a few hours longer than you wanted, but it does not feel like you have missed a day of sleep.

"There is Rip Van Winkle? But he was American... and also a story. And he slept through it. And it was longer than just a day." She is idly speculating and not really paying attention to her words. "Actually, I did not know vampire's slept at all." She comments, coming back to herself and realising who she talking to.

Emma hummed to herself as she finished tidying up. She sent David off to work with a kiss, and the lunch she packed for him - leftovers from dinner from the night before, with a sizable portion of vegies. It was healthier than anything he could get from the cafeteria at his office, and more importantly, cheaper.

He seemed lighter when he left, and she liked to think she had something to do with that. She was in better spirits as well, and with the last of the dishes done, she hung the towel over the handle of the over and turned toward the hallway.

It was time to start her day in earnest. She walked back to her bedroom, still in her nightrobe, and closed the door behind her. Sarah was still asleep, but she locked the door anyway. She didn’t want any interruptions this morning.

Easing herself on the bed, leaning backward against the pillows, she reached for her phone, already knowing who she was going to call first. She was going to ask Henry for some details about the weekend, but it was only as a pretext. What she really wanted was to soften him up, before nudging the conversation toward getting him to pay for her new outfits...

"I don't think so..." says Benji. He's tired but not that tired. According to Miriam's timeline, he also hasn't fed in quite some time either, and he's certain he would notice if that were true. He's hungry, but only the normal background level he's used to.

In answer to Yasmine's last comment. "We're nocturnal. We sleep during the day and hunt at night. Well, most of us do, anyway. I don't hunt so much, but you get the idea."
Apr 27, 2025 3:49 am
Persephone betrays a moment of hesitation and discomfort at the prospect of talking in this public place. but she replies, "I won't ask you to send all these people away, not for my account. I'll leave that decision to you; we may discuss some very personal matters of your brother, however."

She sits in the chair at the side of his table, a look of empathy on her face. She feels deep guilt about her oblique role in Howard's death, combined with a surprising affection for this strange, kind man. She leans forward, speaking in a low voice, so that only Zhiyu can hear her. Persephone says, "I want to be here for whatever you need from me about your brother. I can tell you about his last hours if that is what you would like, but I should also tell you, he was involved in some matters that were dangerous and, frankly, difficult to believe."

"'Not so much'?" Yasmine enquires, sounding nervous about the talk of 'hunting'. She was sort of assuming/hoping that you did not hunt at all, that you were 'a good vampire', 'a safe vampire'. But she does not seem too worried about being alone in the shop with you.

"I forgot about that part." She says when you mention sleeping during the day. "I do not want to keep you if you need to go." She looks around the bookshop despondently, not wanting to leave and let more books get damaged, but already she as a significant pile for her trolley. As she suggested, it will take days to fully sort and save the books, if you need to find overlapping times to do it together those days will become weeks... or, more like triage and loss. She will definitely fret about those books moldering a few doors down from her place.

"Possibly more than you can imagine." Zhiyu says sadly when you mention Howard's 'involvements'. "Let me give you some background, so we don't have to interrupt with questions:

"Wuhao... 'Howard' was a good man." He starts as one must start all conversations about the recently deceased. "He was in I.T., stuff I don't understand." He waves this aside. "Married a good woman, had a ..." Here is voice catches slightly.

"... a lovely daughter, Anabel." He sighs. "But Anabel got sick. Some rare cancer of the blood. There was a new treatment, very cutting edge, but expensive." He looks at you sadly. "I am sure you see where I am going with this. Howard made a deal for some money, quite literally signed away his soul." He is watching you carefully as he says this, watching for a reaction from you about just how 'literally' you are taking this 'literal soul sale'.

• How well do you hide your reaction to this 'news'? It is up to you if you need to roll.

"They sent her to the best clinics in Switzerland. But my niece" —it is worth remembering that he in not only speaking about 'Howard's daughter' but also about his own flesh and blood— "died about a year later.

"Howard was not the same afterwards. He pushed away all the people who loved him. He was very lonely in the end." He takes a breath, trying to be casual as he asks. "How did you know him? What was he like, right there at the end?"

Persephone had suspected that Zhiyu might know more than he was letting on about Wuhao's demonic contract and she is actually relieved to hear that suspicion confirmed. She had dreaded trying to explain to Zhiyu what had really been going on with Wuhao, so this simplifies things considerably. She had already planned to come clean with him, to some extent, about her involvement, so she does not try to her hide her response. Instead, she simply meets his eyes and nods when he makes reference to selling his soul.

Persephone looks down at the ground and sighs deeply. So many feelings fight for attention within her; a survival instinct telling her not to admit wrongdoing or even involvement; an empathy for Zhiyu's loss; guilt for not doing more to prevent Wuhao's death; and a curiosity about what else Zhiyu might know. She opts for honesty; she had been living nothing but lies until very recently, and found such a life excessively isolating.

She raises her eyes to meet his and says, "I don't know Wuhao, not really. But I am like he was. I am someone who made a foolish deal with a demon and now must life with the consequences. My 'contract holder' sent me to the club that night to find Wuhao, to make sure he upholds his end of the bargain, which included doing what he eventually did. When I arrived, he was trying to enjoy himself, with drugs and women in a private room. But he was miserable. I sat with him and listened, tried to be a friend to him when he so desperately needed one."

She looks away now, wincing in pain and tears threatening to flow. She shakes her head in disgust at herself and continues. "I... I wasn't a good friend to him. Not at all. I listened, yes, and tried to help him. But ultimately, when he talked about upholding the bargain and ending it all, I didn't argue with him. I didn't try to stop him. So I ... I have to apologize to you, Zhiyu, for my weakness. I was--and am--scared of what happens if I don't uphold my contract. And mine demanded I be there that night, to make sure he did it. I don't ask for your understanding, sympathy, or forgiveness; I don't deserve any of that. I came here today to tell you the truth, no matter how ugly. Because you deserve it. And of no other reason than that."

As you look away you feel Zhiyu's rough hand placed gently on yours. He gives your hand a compassionate squeeze.

"I am so sorry." He says when he hears about your deal. "That is terrible. Even though you did not know him, and even though you were forced to be there, I am still glad there was someone with him in the end. Someone who understood a little of what was happening. Trying to fill one's life with forced happiness never works. I am glad someone could listen and understand. Thank you."

He looks stricken. You have confirmed something he, maybe, only suspected.

"And thank you for being honest with me." He says, despite the only-partial-honesty you employed. "I never knew for sure what Wuhao did, 'won the lottery' seemed a bit thin since he never played it before that one time. I just wish he had been open with me. Maybe I could have done something. I don't know."

She should have done this in person. It would’ve been so much easier if he could see her. She would smile a little. Wear something suggestive.. It would have been easier to get him into an agreeable state if he was looking at her, rather than just hearing her. But she also knew how busy he was, and she didn’t want to wait until later in the afternoon, or the evening, to get her answers.

"Hey" she said one the call connected "How’s it going?"

Her free hand drifted lazily along the silk trim of her robe as she spoke. "I won’t take up too much of your time, she added with just the right amount of deference in her voice, which, knowing Henry wasn't just appreciated - but expected.

"But, do you know what’s planned for the gathering this weekend? And...why I was invited?"

They both knew she didn’t belong in that crowd. She wasn’t rich. Or powerful. Or influential. She wasn’t a member of the gentlemen's club, and no one was inviting her for her dazzling intellect. He must have wondered about it too. Maybe even enough to ask Sin about it?

Maybe it is your imagination projecting on him, and Henry would never be so crass as to ask "what are you wearing", but something about his tone suggests he is picturing you just like this, in bed, wearing silk, playing with the edges... He seems distracted.

"Oh, team-building stuff, I assume. It was supposed to be at the seaside, and called for 'bathers and hiking boots', they emphasised the boots. I don't know what has changed since the move. Pack for all occasions." He suggests. Which is easy for him to say, enough money can buy some versatile and small outfits, but you don't think it would be too well received if showed up with a truck-load of bags.

He does not respond to the question of why you were invited. Why would he point out to you that it is, obviously, all to do with him, and has very little to do with you. The invitation went out before 'they' knew anything about you, after all [ref].

Zhiyu's kindness shocks Persephone to her core. She had been so certain she had brought nothing but pain to Wuhao and now to Zhiyu, but he thanks her. He is a truly good man, she marvels to herself.

She looks at him with deep empathy and admiration. When he wonders if he could have done something, she shakes her head No and says, "Take my word for it. Selling your soul to a demon leaves a stain so deep that no amount of reason can bring you to seek help from others, even people who want to help. They endow you with a feeling of hopelessness so overpowering that you feel you must accept your fate. After all, you signed the document, didn't you? Yeah, it is never the easy. So please, whatever you do, don't blame yourself. Don't beat yourself up. You couldn't have known, nor done anything if you had."

She feels deep indebted to this man for his kindness and understanding, allowing her not to hate herself quite so much. Finally, she says. "I am happy to answer any questions you have. And Zhiyu, thank you. I owe you a great debt that I can never repay."
Apr 28, 2025 6:14 am
So Henry didn’t know what the weekend was about either. He was probably so keen on joining their little club, that he didn’t insist on getting clear answers. If he only knew what these people were really about. He is out of his depth, and he doesn’t even know it.

"I’ve been thinking I should pick something new for the weekend" she parted the silk of her robe just a little wider. He couldn’t see her, but she didn’t need him to. It helped her get into the right headspace. Teasing and tempting him came easier that way. More natural. "I was hoping to blend in a little. Try to fit in, you know? " she paused, then added with a sight edge of disappointed in her voice, knowing he would pick up on the hint "Only problem is, I really can’t wait for things to be on sale…"

"I don't believe that." Zhiyu says. "There is always a way." He does not say what he is probably thinking, that 'the way is to be strong enough to not sign the deal in the first place', but he is mirroring your thoughts about loopholes, even if he does not know of any.

"Do you feel like you are 'hopeless'?" He asks. "'There is no fate', we are not in that system." He says, trying to lighten the mood with humour. "Wuhao gave up long before the end. Don't give them the satisfaction of letting them win. Fight them till the end.

"I don't blame myself." He declares when you try to reassure him. "I blame whoever made him sign that deal. Found him when he was weak and took advantage." This might hit a little close to home seeing as your next job involves just such a situation. "But 'blame' is not a productive word. It is mainly an excuse to avoid doing what needs to be done."

You have occupied a lot of his time, and the queue is getting restless. He does not reply to your offer for questions, but seems puzzled by your next.

"Why?" He asks, both confused and probing when you speak of 'a great debt'.

This was the opening she’d been waiting for. It didn’t look like Henry had given much thought to what he should be wearing either. He couldn’t just show up dressed like an aristocrat. He was new money, and trying to pass himself as something he wasn’t could easily end up a faux-pas.

"Dressing well for this is important" She needed him to understand the weight of it "You can’t just show up in one of your tailored business suits. You want to make the right impression. Look like you belong, but also stand out from the crowd in the best sort of way"

Her voice dropped to a more intimate note "You know I’ve been writing about fashion for The Independent, right? It’s really my thing. I’m sure I could help you pick out a few things that show them exactly who you are, without looking like you’re trying. Besides, you could use a few more options for other events, too"

She paused before tempting him some more "And while we’re at it… maybe we could pick out a few things for me, too. You do want me to look my best over the weekend, don’t you?"

"Ah, that is to say... not at all," Benji corrects himself, regretting bringing it up. Humans get a bit funny about such conversations. Truthfully, he hasn't hunted anyone in a very long time. Feeding off friends is a lot more convenient, after all.

"Two o’clock, at Harrods then" she eagerly agreed, picking the most extravagant department store that popped into her mind. "We’ll need some time to try things on. Maybe make a quick stop at the tailor"

Of course, she was already planning to arrive a couple of hours ahead to pick out everything for him in advance. Once he showed up, all he would have to do was try them on and choose what he liked best. And more importantly, pay for the clothes she planned to pick out for herself.

"You’ve already got the looks" she ended the call with a flirty tone "I’ll find you the clothes to match"

Satisfied with how things had gone, she smiled to herself as she stretched on the bed. A few moments later, she was on her phone again, swiping through her text messages. After checking if there was any word from Bev, she tapped on Teddi’s contact that Benji provided her with, and started typing:

"Hey, Teddi. It’s Emma; Eliot’s friend. I was wondering if you have time to meet right now?"

"C'est un singulier." Yasmine comments to herself about Jacob. "You think he had a reason? Risking all these books?"

She watches you as she asks 'casually': "Does this," she waves at the pond and the damp, "have anything to do with the weather?" It is not surprising she is also thinking about that problem, everyone seems to have decided it is worth dealing with. "I hear talk it is 'demons', but nobody has can say which, and I do not think so." She is fishing for your opinion on the topic and if you think this demon-involvement in the weather has anything to do with Jacob's sudden departure.

Emma didn’t make a fuss about Bev paying for the takeout (When did she ever complain when people bought her things?) But it did strike her as a little odd that Bev wouldn’t even take credit for it. It was strange, but she decided not to dwell on it. Bev probably had her reasons.

Guess there IS such a thing as a free lunch...

She didn’t miss Bev’s not-so-subtle attempt to be included in her plans for the day. But she knew it was better to keep things private. Henry wouldn't appreciate a third wheel tagging along on their shopping trip. Even if he would have been fine with it, Emma still wouldn't have extended the offer. She wanted Henry’s full attention. If Bev was around, it would be harder to get what she wanted of him.

"I’m getting ready for a weekend event I was invited to" she typed quickly, then added before Bev could ask if she could tag along "But we should definitely catch up when I get back! Let me know when you're free."

She hit ‘send,’, then frowned when she noticed Teddi left her on read. That simply wouldn’t do!

She tapped his contact and called him directly. It’s not like she could force him to answer his phone, but maybe it would be enough to let him know the matter was important, and that she wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

When he asks her if she is hopeless, Persephone thinks for a moment and replies, "Not any more. I had felt that way, though, after I made the mistake of signing. But after I finally took the chance to open up and tell my friend, I've felt hope again."

When he asks why she feels indebted to him, she shrugs and says, "I had felt culpable for his death. I could have tried to stop him. I could have offered him more support. I was mostly thinking about myself the whole time. And here you are, having suffered a terrible loss, and you are spending your time helping me to feel better. I feel indebted to you because of your kindness, your selflessness, and youthful wisdom. Thank you."

Glancing over her shoulder, she stands and says, "And I have taken up enough of your time. You have many others waiting to see you. And me, I have to meet my friends. They are going to help me try to get out of this demonic contract. They have some experience with supernatural matters. And Zhiyu, again, thank you. If you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to contact me."

Once they have concluded their conversation, she takes her leave, reflecting on what they discussed.

"Our friends lend us strength." Zhiyu agrees, sounding sad that his bother could not find it in himself to lean on that source.

"It is always easy to say, after the fact, that 'we could have done more'. Do you really believe that anything you could have done that night would have made a difference to the final outcome? Could you have know that then?" Zhiyu shakes his head. "Don't blame yourself. Not for Wuhoa's choices.

"I asked you to speak to me for my own selfish reasons." He points out. "This was about trying make me feel better. I am as selfish as the next man... well, maybe not the next man..." He says, glancing at the man at the head of the queue, though you can see a twinkle laughing in his eye.

"There will always be people waiting. They can come back tomorrow." He says pragmatically. "But I will let you get to your friends. I sincerely hope they can help you find a way out of this. I only wish... well, if wishes were fishes ... I would be in a different business." He jokes, gesturing at the vegetables.

"But I will take you up on that offer. And maybe I can help you at some point. I would like to think we are friends, ones who can draw strength from one another."

Emma only had the briefest interaction with Teddy. She didn’t really know what he was like as a person. She wasn’t even sure if he WAS a person, or a vampire like Eliot. At any rate, he sounded a bit off to her, but she couldn’t be sure if it was because he was agitated over his employer’s disappearance, because he didn’t want to talk with her right now, or that he generally had an abrasive personality.

She decided to be cautious

"It’s Emma. Eliot’s friend?"

She paused for a moment, to see if he would say something to indicate he recognized her. Maybe he couldn’t recall her by name, but surely by her appearance?

"We met at Eliot’s penthouse. A few weeks ago, remember? I was the blonde interviewing Eliot for my book"

She then shifted, trying to determine his state of mind "How are you doing?"

"Uh? ... Hold please." They says, sounding like this is something they were taught to say in such situations. You hear the phone being placed on a soft surface and everything goes fuzzy, but you think you hear someone walking away, followed by someone talking, explaining the situation... for a lot longer than it should take to explain.

Then footsteps approaching and a woman answers: "Emma! Hello! Sorry about that. This is Lucy speaking. Teddy is ... in recovery." There may have been the slightest hint of a word-search-pause before 'in recovery'. "How can we help you?" She sounds friendly, eager to serve.

What did they mean by "in recovery"? She didn’t like the sound of it, but it was too late to backtrack now. Better to press, gather what she could while giving away as little as possible.

"Well, I was trying to reach Teddy because I haven’t been able to get in touch with Eliot. I thought maybe he might know where he is."

She paused for a moment before asking her own question:

"Sorry; What’s your relation to Teddy, exactly?"

So much for the tracker. She hoped Teddy might actually help her find where Eliot’s car was last seen, but now he was "in recovery" and conveniently out of reach. It wouldn’t surprise her if he was in the hands of someone who didn’t want Eliot found…

"That sounds serious. I hope he gets well soon." She said politely, already deciding there was nothing she could gain from this conversation, save trouble "He can call me when he’s feeling better. I’d appreciate that." she breathed, then ended the call: "Thanks, Lucy. Goodbye."

"I don’t think it’s demons either," Benji agrees. "Alasdair says it’s faeries and I think he might be right." The possibility that the mysterious pond might be related somehow had not occurred to him until now, but now that Yasmine mentions it, he wonders if that too might be the work of the fey. He sniffs the air, trying to detect a hint of fey magic beneath the pungent boggy smell of the stagnant water and rotting books.

Persephone looks downward and nods, accepting Zhiyu's words. Given the situation she was in--indebted for her soul to a demon who demanded she do it, all alone for the moment in her secret-- Persephone acknowledges that, No, there wasn't really much she could have done that night to prevent something bad happening to Wuhao.

She looks up and smiles when he accepts her offer of both debt and friendship. She nods and says, "Yes, absolutely. Please call on me whenever you think I could be of help. And I'll let you know if I am in dire need as well. Thank you. I don't have many friends in London yet, but I count you among them now."

She stands and nods again, saying, "I'll go and let you get back to them." Then, glancing down the row, she adds, "You draw an interesting crowd, Zhiyu. There is a lot more to you than meets the eye. I'm honored to know you. Be well!"

With one more smile, she turns to leave.

Emma could never afford to set foot in Harrods.

She walked past the windows more than a few times, just to peer through the glass, but she knew better than to go inside. Browsing without any intention to buy something would have made her uncomfortable. Harrods wasn’t for people like her. This was where millionaires went to shop. She wasn’t a millionaire, but today, she was in the company of one.

So when she arrived a full two hours early, it wasn’t (solely) to save Henry’s precious time (though that made for a convenient excuse, and she knew he would appreciate it). It was so she could indulge herself.

She was overwhelmed the moment she stepped through the gilded revolving doors. The store seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction—rooms opening into more rooms. Marble floors. Soft gold lighting above. The faint scent of perfume in the air...

It was so opulent. So pretentious. So... shamelessly decadent. How could she not like it?

Of course, the clothes were for people with more money than sense. She almost had a heart attack when she checked some of these price tags. It didn’t actually take a million dollars to look like a million dollars. She’d proven that herself more than once. Her current outfit; a stylish ivory blouse (a couple of buttons of which she left loose) and dark, high-waisted trousers, weren’t branded clothing. She got them on a clearance sale two seasons ago, and she still looked fantastic in it. Chic, a bit provocative, and more importantly, easy to slip in and out of—something she intended to do lots of today.
[ +- ] outfit
She would never have spent any of her own money here. But she WAS enjoying herself, and knowing Henry could easily afford it, she didn’t feel guilty over getting a couple of luxury garments for herself, to impress the people back at the Lanesborough, if nothing else.

The staff welcomed her from the moment she stepped inside, and once she confidently started asking for items to be retrieved and set aside "for someone else," the assistants paid her even more attention. They could tell she wasn’t just window shopping. Everyone was smiling at her. She didn’t need to touch a hanger; everything was handed to her, then placed back in perfect order if she didn’t approve.

It was just perfect.

By 2 p.m., she made her way toward the grand entrance. She had a little mental list prepared of what to show Henry first, before she’d ask for his opinion on a couple of outfits for herself. She barely noticed when he failed to arrive on time. It would have irritated her any other day, but today, she was having so much fun, she just couldn’t care less.

Totally giddy when he finally arrived, her eyes lit up when she saw him step onto the floor.
"Hi!" she leaned in to kiss his cheek. "How have you been? I can’t wait to show you a few things." She didn’t give him time to answer, and reaching for his hand, she laced her fingers through his and gave him a gentle tug, pulling him with her "Come on! Men’s is this way! I’ve already got a few racks waiting for you!"

Benji does not respond to Yasmine, instead becoming eerily still as he tries to focus on his sense of smell. He’s encountered faeries in the past and he recalls that, though they do not have much of a scent themselves, their magic has a distinctly sour smell. Of course, his proximity to Yasmine and the mouth-watering aroma of her blood makes it difficult to concentrate…

Henry seems a bit shell-shocked by the greeting. Even he is a little intimidated by Harrods. He has intended to be firm, to maintain control and curb your enthusiasm and spending —rich people don't become, or stay, rich by spending money willy-nilly— but you have discombobulated him and may be able to bamboozle him into spending a lot more than he intended, if you play your cards right.

The staff are the epitome of professional service, not hinting in any way that you have been there for the past few hours preparing, but addressing you with all the deference they would royalty (using your name as though you are known, if you so desire). Even if you were merely 'Mr Godfrey's assistant' they endeavour to make you look good, professionally as well as sartorially.

Even above the bog-stench of the pond and the decaying weed —which is not enjoying being indoors and out of the sun— you smell that extra aroma of ... rampant growth? Yes. If you know enough about the faerie courts you would think 'Summer Court'.

Do you make this connection? Do you know enough?

The nearness of fresh, unoffered, blood is overwhelming, what with your senses running at full power like this. Persephone smiles warmly at Zhiyu and takes her leave. She finds her way back to her flat and tosses her soaking wet umbrella and coat aside as she enters the front door, kicks off her wet shoes, and collapses onto the sofa unceremoniously.

Unsure of what to do with it at the moment, she sets it aside. Fortunately, she has the condo to herself for the moment.

She calls the Hotline and is surprised to hear no corporate greeting or recorded message, but an uncertain young man on the other end of the line. His accent is... Minnesota, maybe? Or is that one of the Dakotas? She can't quite tell, but she'd guess he is no older than 20.

The items she picked for Henry were waiting for them on the reserved corner of the floor. She offered a faintest smile when one of the assistants began to step forward, casually dismissing her without room for argument. She knew just as much about fashion and style as any of them, if not more, but more importantly, she didn’t want anyone else in the way.

"I didn’t want to waste your time, so I already have a few choices for you laid out. All you have to do is try them on and tell me which ones you like best."

She sent him off to the changing room with the first outfit; a light collared shirt, soft grey blazer, and tailored sand-coloured trousers. Elegant, sporty, and young. She took the time to check her reflection in the mirror while he was away to prepare for the next part of her act. She wanted to keep him in the right mood for the rest of the afternoon, and ensuring that her blouse sat just right couldn’t hurt.

The appreciative smile that curled on her lips was genuine when she finally saw him emerging from the changing room. It was a good look for him, and she didn’t shy away from letting her eyes linger for a moment.

"I knew it would be perfect for you!" she stepped toward him and reached out to straighten the lapel of his blazer; a pretext to brush her finger over his chest. "It’s a good fit. Accentuates your physique" She wasn’t just saying it to flatter him, and perhaps she was talking more to herself than to him.

Next, she crouched right in front of him to (also) check the length of his trousers and adjust the length at the ankle just above the shoe, though her real intention was to offer him a fleeting glimpse down her blouse - which is why she took more time then was necessary to mark where they would need to do some light hemming.

When she finally stood up again, she had him turn toward the full-length mirror, standing right by his side "So.." she said softly as she looked at his reflection in the mirror "what do you think?"

The package was probably placed with your umbrella and coat, and got picked up when you got up to leave and collected your things. Zhiyu did signal the staff a few times during your conversation, it was a busy stall.

This outfit is definitely more than Henry usually spends. His suits, like his car, are 'off the rack', enough to impress the finance people he deals with, and not get looked down on by the members of his prospective-club, but the tags in the 'simple' stuff here is ridiculous. Ordinarily he would reject such items, but your manner has him spinning and he can't keep his eyes off you.

"You..." He swallows hard. "You think so?" He says when you complement him. "Maybe with a pair of boots?" He grasps for the only item of control he can, that 'they' were insistent on hiking boots back when it was to be a weekend at the seaside.

It really sounds like he is a flunky, tech support, and does not know anything. The likelihood of him having access to your Contract is minuscule and he probably thinks you are looking for information on a demon you encountered, the sort of thing Wentworth said you should ask them about if you needed specifics.

"Oh no, this one is not for hiking!" she tried to keep the rebuke from her voice. God, what would he do without her? "This is for the meet-and-greet. Or having a late glass of whisky with the boys later in the afternoon. You walk into the countryside in a blazer like that, and they won’t think you clever, but a fool who doesn’t appreciate what he’s wearing."

She stepped back, and gave him one more look over with clear satisfaction "Don’t worry. We’ll pick up something stylish that is fit for the outdoors in a more sensible place. Somewhere where they don’t charge a hundred quid just for the stitching"

Without waiting, she moved to the next outfit she selected for him, plucking it off the rack and handing it over to him. She spent the next half hour playing dress up with him, choosing, adjusting, touching him lightly when she needed to.

She knew better than to push her luck. Thirty minutes was generous by Henry’s standards, and she knew that his patience wouldn’t hold for much longer.

"All right. I think you’ve seen them all. What’s your favorite?"
She stepped aside and waited for him to have the final say. He always knew what he wanted.
She gave him a little time to answer, and for the assistants to pack everything for them, before her expression changed to one of mischief:

"Now. Do you want to see what I had my eye on?"

"Definitely." Henry says, he has been fantasising about this fashion show all day. Buying you clothes will make him feel like a big man, in control, and, after what you convinced him to spend on his own wardrobe he can't exactly say no to the price of yours even if he normally would balk at the idea.

"Perfect" her lips curled slightly in a teasing smile "I’ll be right back"

Grabbing the first of the dresses, she disappeared into the changing room and shut the door behind her. She took her time stripping out of her clothes, and even more time standing in front of the mirror, running a hand down her side, adjusting a strand of hair, turning slightly at the hip as she admired her reflection.

Henry used to make her wait all the time. It wouldn’t hurt him to wait on her for a change.

Finally, she slipped on the dress - an emerald-green turtleneck midi dress with long sleeves. No cleavage, long enough to extend all the way down to her knees. But it fit her body just perfectly, hugging all the curves and accentuating her figure. She let out small sigh of satisfaction, standing for a moment more staring at the mirror.

That dress looked good. She could never afford to buy it on David’s salary, but it would hardly make a dent in Henry’s. And really, he wants to buy it. He wants to feel generous, like a provider. She would be doing him a favor letting him indulge her.

When she finally opens the door and steps out she gives him a small, playful smile, before turning sideways so he can appreciate the profile as well "So...what do you think?"

The unexpected smell of ripe fruit and thriving greenery tickles Benji’s memory. There’s something there, an important clue, but the Hunger is clawing at his insides and he is finding it near impossible to restrain himself from sinking his teeth into Yasmine’s throat. "…Excuse me a moment," he says, weakly, unable to bear it any longer, before fleeing the bookshop altogether, leaving his umbrella where he left it by the door in his haste to get outside and away from Yasmine.

Outside, he paces back and forth awhile, humming a bit of Vivaldi to keep his mind occupied until the Hunger fades and he can think for himself again. The sting of the weak sunlight and the chill of the torrential rain help to clear his mind as well and, in a flash, he remembers where he's smelled that strange scent before. He rushes back into the bookshop, drenched from the rain but visibly excited, and tells Yasmine, "I think you’re right about the pond being related to the rain. I could smell summer! Isn’t that peculiar? Summer at this time of the year? It has to be the fey, don’t you think?"

The likelihood of him receiving another call, from someone like you, is tremendously low, especially given that it really seemed you were his first. Yasmine has continued to work, she has loaded up the trolley with a pile of books, and, incidentally, placed it between herself and the door where you would enter... but that is also where it would be to be made ready to be pushed out the door? Right? Nothing to read into there. Right? She had been using a broom to push some of the water around, in the intervening time she seems to 'accidentally' broken the wooden handle, the short piece lies, sharp and pointy, on the table where she is sorting books. Yasmine doesn't look worried though.

"We already determined it was not." She points out in a very school-teachery way. "There is no leak and the upper floors are dry... or dryer." There is condensation forming up there, as well as mould.

"Sure, it smells like 'summer', but that is what a bog smells like." She says, talking about the pond-smell discernible to human senses. She might not know what you mean by 'Summer', and think you are on about the season. She does not believe in faeries... anymore.

Benji is so excited by his discovery that he barely takes any notice of Yasmine’s improvised stake — or her skepticism. "No, no, I don’t mean a leak. I mean I think the fey are responsible for both the rain and the pond. I’m almost certain of it, in fact." He kneels by the edge of the pond and peers into the murky water as if he might see a gaggle of water fey lurking just below the surface. Seeing nothing except dirty water and dying duckweed, he sits back on his heels and wonders aloud, "But… why?"

Persephone frowns, realizing her ignorance is part of her imprisonment, her submission to her Patron. Well, it is one aspect of this horrid situation that she won't accept. She's angry about this now and a small ember of spite within her grows. She sneers, composes herself, and says, "Well, I was directed by my contact, Wentworth, to ask this question. And hey, I'm new to this, and I'm scared too. So let's keep this between us, OK?"

She strongly suspects the call is being monitored, which means poor Duane will probably be punished if this works. But Persephone just can't save everyone, and right now, she is trying to save herself.

Henry is not the sort of person to need —or see the need for— a new outfit for each occasion, and would normally complain that "what's wrong with the dress you wore last time?" but you have him sufficiently off balance that he does not object.

The bank need to call Henry to confirm it is him making this purchase, but the Harrods teller don't blink any eye at this delay.

Emma adjusted her grip on the shopping bags. She could walk away right now after she got what she wanted, but she didn't want him to feel used. Else she might never hear from him again, and she had so many other ideas on what he could be spending his money on.

She glanced over at him, giving just the hint of a smile. "Are you heading back to the office, or… do you have a bit of time?"

She opened the door for him. If he wanted to talk, grab coffee, or show off some more, it would be up to him. And if not - well, at least she offered

When did Emma ever said 'no' to more shopping, even if it wasn’t for her?

"I was starting to think I worn you out" she teased him "There’s a place in Covent Garden I think you’ll like. Something smart for the outdoors, at a fraction of the price." And yes, she said it right in front of the Harrods teller.

Slipping in beside him, she gently bumped against his arm as they headed for the exit. "Did you bring the car, or should we grab a taxi?"

"The car wouldn't start this morning." Henry says matter-of-factly. "'Water in the electrics', they say."

Persephone senses Duane's hesitation. She sighs and adds, "Listen, Duane. I'm trying to get a copy of my contract and to learn about the patron who controls it. Because I am looking for a way out. And I'll tell you what; if you help me now, and I find a way, I will share it with you. Do you hear me? I will get you out if I can."
May 3, 2025 5:28 pm
There was no way Emma was going to risk getting her new dresses suffer even a single drop of rain. If they had to wait a little for the taxi, so be it. Harrod’s underground car park was warm and insulated, as was the one below Covent Gardens. They could easily make the entire way warm and dry.

She stood just a bit close to him as they waited, gaze fixed on the distant driveway watching for the taxi to appear. "How are your parents?" she asked not really because she was interested in knowing, but for the sake of nostalgia.

Emma did have a warm relationship with Henry’s parents, and his mother in particular. She always told her how she liked her best out of all the others. She never approved of her son’s philandering, and hoped he might somehow end up settling down with Emma one day. She kept in touch with her even after they broke up; they were practically neighbors, and since Emma regularly went back to Bellingham for Christmas every year, she ran into Henry’s parents on more then one occasion.

"Yes, those were his parents" she confirmed "They were visiting for a few days, so I showed them around. Took them to see a play, lunch. My writer’s circle" his question reminded her of something she has been meaning to ask him. He dodged the issue last time, but maybe she would get him to open up now "How did you know I was there? I never posted about it online, or anything of the sort. Have you been following me?" she asked with a hint of concern, though she couldn’t help but feel flattered at the same time.

"For real?! You think you can get me out of this deal?" Duane whispers. "I don't think it was a fair deal. It was just one little exam.

"Look. I don't know nothing about 'contracts', except that my instructions were to answer this phone, day or night, and look up stuff, but not to talk about contracts or anything not in the databases. Do you think they actually have like a real piece of paper we could get a lawyer to look at?" He sounds naively optimistic about getting things settled through legal channels, but that does not invalidate the basic premise. It seems he did not 'sign' anything.

"When I entered that name, the one you gave." He whispers, not saying the name himself. "A red screen popped up. Says I needed to contact my supervisor. What do I do?"

Emma was relieved to find out he wasn't stalking her. And disappointed at the same time. It would have been flattering in its way, if he had gone out of his way to find her. His explanation made sense, aside the part where he said he was chatting with some members of her author's circle. She thought he would have better things to do with his time than talk with aspiring writers. It wasn't like him to waste his time on anything that didn't benefit him personally.

Oh well...

She didn't expect him to open the door for her when the taxi pulled up. Arms full of bags, she opened the door herself and climbed in, scooting over so he will have room to sit next to her "Where are you staying now?" she prodded him, maybe more curious than she would admit to herself "Still living by yourself?"
May 4, 2025 3:22 pm
Persephone sighs. Of course he doesn't know anything. They wouldn't give a flunky access to sensitive info. Ok...Let's see if I can find someone who does know something...

She says, "Well, first of all, ignore that screen and let me know the name and contact info for your supervisor. Don't worry! I'm not going to report you! On the contrary, I'm going to see about getting us both out of these positions, ok?"

"Yes. Still in the Brownstone in Knightsbridge." Henry answers. It is as strange to think of him all alone in such a large place while you have three people crammed into your small flat, but stone's-throw away, as it is to think of him possibly 'chatting' with Sarah in your living-room at night.

"Knightsbridge?" she was genuinely impressed "You’ve really done well for yourself."

She didn’t ask what he did with all that space. He clearly didn’t need it, so it was probably more about the address than the square footage.

"We’re in Soho now" she volunteered "I love the neighborhood, but the flat is tiny. I wouldn’t mind a bit more space. Maybe once my writing really takes off…" She glanced out the window at the rain, a bit more thoughtful, holding her bags closer to her chest.
May 4, 2025 4:31 pm
Persephone writes down the number and replies, "OK, thank you, Duane. I'm gonna let you go now... Just try to go back to your normal day, ok? I'll be in touch. I guess I'll call you here?"

"Property prices have been soaring." Henry agrees about your tiny place, he does not comment that he knows 'the neighborhood' you stay in —he was worried about parking his car there when he picked you up and dropped you off the last time— and, while technically SOHO, is leaves a lot to be desired. He also does not comment that, had you stayed with him, you could have 'done well for yourself', as well. He knows you know it. "Though the weather and storm damage is ... well you don't need to concern yourself with my worries."

"Yes." He says when you mention your next book. "You're doing 'research'?" He asks, showing that 'see I do listen'. "How's that going?"

Persephone's heart sinks. He's just a student. A kid. God I hate this organization. She says, "yeah, you get to class; have a good day at school. Oh, uh, who's Cassian?" Clearly Persephone does not get the joke.
May 4, 2025 6:18 pm
She gave a small nod when he mentioned property prices, though inwardly, she was already bracing for the moment their landlord decided to raise the rent. It was only a matter of time if the market kept climbing. Must be nice, she thought, not to constantly worry about money. Henry’s so-called storm damage had probably cost more than her entire year’s rent.

Best not to dwell on it.

"Yes; that’s why I agreed to this weekend ‘retreat’ at the Lanesborough. That gentlemen’s club of yours looks like a front for an infernal cult" It was oddly easier to be honest with Henry about her research than it was with David. Maybe because she figured Henry wouldn’t take it seriously anyway. "I’m actually looking forward to it" she paused for a moment as she gave it some more thought. This could be the perfect opportunity to question Henry about some of the people she met at Claridge "That man who introduced himself as ‘Sin’... do you know his real name? What he's about?"
May 5, 2025 6:02 am
"Would you? That would be terrific! And you have my permission, of course." He still isn’t quite sure how these protections work, but he hopes that will suffice. "Here, I’ll lend you my key," he adds, fishing around in his pocket for the spare key Jacob gave him. He hopes Jacob won’t mind all this. It’s for the sake of his books, after all.

He gives the key to Yasmine and then turns his attention to the matter of the frog. He supposes Yasmine’s probably right that it would be better for the frog elsewhere, but catching it is not going to be easy. He doesn’t even know where it is… He has only just begun searching when he recalls that there was something else he needed to ask Yasmine. "Oh! I almost forgot. I wanted to talk to you about those lamps you were talking about with Persephone and Emma. I think my friend Lizabeth might have found one of them."

"Er... Cassian, you know ... Cassian? ... Andor?" Duane says. "Like, from Ro... from Star Wars." He concludes, sounding dejected. "Forget it. It was a joke."

"You would say that about them." Henry says, treating your 'infernal cult' reference as an obvious flight of fancy, you are a 'fantasy writer' after all. "Just remember not to use their names or specific places if you base your 'cult' on them. 'K?"

Henry does not say that he is looking forward to having you there. Actually he might seem ... not-quite-happy about that invitation? Maybe it is that someone else invited you, in such an offhand manner, or that you might outshine him and detract from his impact, or even that you might do something to embarrass him in front of the people he is trying to impress. He has not said or done anything to suggest this, so it might just be your imagination.

"'Sin? Yeah, it is short for 'Sinclair', Alastair Sinclair. I think that is new, the others keep forgetting and using his full name. I am not sure why he is trying for that appellation." You can't be sure what the relationship is between 'Sin and Henry, 'Sin seems very keen on having Henry around, but Henry seems deferential to the man, it does not seem like 'mutual respect', more like they both are trying to get something from the other, but you have not had much time to study them and they did not interact much at the dinner.

"You're not going to write about them in your little column, right?" Henry says again reminding you of that agreement.

"Oh, that's great." Yasmine says, accepting the key. "If you need to get in, I am just a few doors down. Wake me anytime. Anyway, I will probably be here at night —this will take time and I do have a business to run— so our timetables can overlap."

She watches your frog-hunting antics for a few moments, a little smile on her face, before returning her concentration to the book pile. She nods amicably when you start to talk about 'magic lamps', but then you mention Lizabeth having found one and she drops a valuable book on her foot.

"Mon Dieu!" She exclaims. "So the whispers are true? Did she touch it? Did she use it?!"

Yasmine seems both excited and frightened by the idea. "Where is it now?"

May 5, 2025 7:29 am
"Relax. I don’t name names. I’m not looking to get sued, or lose my seat at their table," she knew better than that "I might borrow the atmosphere. Use some of them as inspiration. There were some very vivid personalities at Claridge."

She smiled faintly when he referred to it as her "little" column. He couldn’t help himself, always chipping away at her accomplishment, no matter how meager they were compared to his. Just like his "advice" not to write about any of his friends: it wasn’t a suggestion. It was an instruction, with that little "’K?" in the end, like she needed help understanding what was expected of her.

She hadn’t missed his lack of enthusiasm over her invitation, either. If she had to guess, it was because Sinclair had invited her personally. That probably put her on equal footing with Henry. She wasn’t his date, or a plus-one. That had to sting. The idea that he wasn’t entirely in control of her anymore. That he didn’t hold the keys to that club.

If only he knew...

These men weren’t just members of the wealthy ruling class. According to Pers, a few of them were actual diabolists. If Henry understood even half of what she suspected, he might stop worrying about her invitation and start wondering how to get out.

But then again... Henry was arrogant enough to believe he could handle anything.

"I’m still not sure what I’m supposed to be doing there" she tried to put him at ease, echoing what she guessed he was thinking. "Or why I was invited at all. I’m just a nobody to them. I didn’t even make interesting conversation that night"
May 5, 2025 7:38 am
- Emma -

"It's just a retreat. A chance to relax and get to know people." Henry says dismissively, you already know he does not know what is planned for the weekend and is just guessing.

"I was surprised they doubled down on the invitation. After all those rude things you said about them. They seemed to like you more after all that." It's a little unfair that you get to mouth off like that and get even more popular, while he has to be careful over every word just to be accepted.

"You should try wearing a dress with a deep cleavage next time. Might help you impress Sinclair." She turned from the window and smiled slyly at him "He definitely has a type."

‘Kat’, who hanged at Sinclair’s side all night, was also a striking blonde, the same age as Emma. And she guessed she too wasn’t invited over to that dinner for her conversation skills either.

It was a tease, but not without purpose. It would be good for Henry to remember that other powerful men, like Sinclair, noticed her too.

"Anyway, if this retreat really is about relaxing and getting to know people, then you should be glad they invited me." She let her voice lighten "I actually know how to let my hair down and have fun"

She couldn't help but giggle at Henry's attempt at humor.
"Honestly? You don't need a dress. Just surround yourself with gorgeous young blondes, and Sinclair will keep sniffing around."

Outside, the taxi turned onto the street leading to Covent Garden, its tires splashing through the deep puddles as they approached the parking garage. "We should hit Joules first. I think they’ll have everything we need" Emma was already thinking about her next shopping spree

"That's not fair. Then they will be looking at you and not at me." Henry 'complains' when you deny him a dress.

"Whatever you say. It's your show." He says, not having an opinion on where to shop.

"You want to wait?" He asks the taxi driver. "Get paid to sit in a nice warm parking garage instead of fighting it out in the street and the wet?" He seem willing to risk leaving your expensive outfits with the taxi, just to save the effort of lugging them around and then waiting for a new taxi.

Persephone pauses for a moment and then realizes what he is talking about and says, "Well, yes, I saw Rogue One. Though I admit I'm behind on Andor. I just didn't realize you two were on a first name basis." She laughs, trying to cover her mistake. In truth she had seen Rogue One, but only because the guy she was dating at the time wanted to. She stopped caring much about Star Wars after the prequel trilogy, specifically, what Anakin did to the younglings.

She considers responding with a Star Wars reference, but decides against it, and simply says, "Anyway, I'll be in touch, OK? Take care." She ends the call. She stares at Barb's phone number for a time and wonders what the safest way to look it up might be. She could do some internet research... But what if they are monitoring her internet usage? She shrugs and thinks, Eh, if they are monitoring my internet usage, then they definitely were monitoring that call. And honestly, it doesn't take a PhD in psych to know their contractees will likely look into the organization and try to get out of the contract. After all, if there is a loophole win the contract, that's the patron's fault, isn't it? Should they accept that she did not violate the contract? Oh, but what if the contract includes a 'don't look for the contract' clause? Well... how could I know without having consented to that language? Nah. If we're going to pretend this is all just contract law, then we have to allow that I can eventually, somehow, obtain a copy to study.

And with that, she logs on via an encrypted VPN, uses DuckDuckGo, and begins to search for a Barb with that number.
May 5, 2025 11:46 am
"If Sinclair loves money half as much as he loves blondes, I’m sure you’ll have no trouble keeping his attention," she was still smiling from when he implied she would be a ‘distraction.’

She reached for the door handle while he negotiated with the taxi driver. It really was a great idea, having the car wait for them. No more chasing cabs in the rain or waiting in a chilly parking lot. It was indulgent, but the kind of indulgence she could get used to.

Still, she kept her bags with her. She didn’t trust anyone with her dresses (especially since they worth a hundred times more than what Henry intended to pay to the cabbie to wait). The only place she would leave them was her closet.

Once inside the covered arcades of Covent Garden, with the rain drumming against the glass above them, she led the way straight to Joules. There were no eager assistants here to fawn over them like in Harrods, but she didn’t need them. She was in her element, moving through the store like she owned it: scanning racks, parting hangers, flipping collars. She knew Henry’s measurements by now, and she was going to make sure everything fit like it had been made for him.

"This one!" she reached for a waxed navy field jacket from the rack and held it up to him. "And this!" she handed him a cream-toned wool jumper, to go with the sand colored corduroy she already picked for him earlier. She gave him a little push toward the changing room while he was holding the stack in his hands, already smiling to herself in satisfaction "You try that on, and I’ll go find you some boots in the meantime"

'Barb' is a lot more of a common name than 'Cassian', why couldn't it have been 'Cassian'. Would have been much easier to find.

The number is not listed, but then, outside of business numbers, who lists numbers anymore. Was a time people relished the right to have it in a book, along with name and address, for everyone to read. Now, regular people pay money to have these things scrubbed from all records.

Basic search engines will not get you anything. Besides, 'Barb' is probably Duane's 'Wentworth', so not that much value there, except as another piece of the puzzle.

The cabby looks a little insulted at your lack of trust in the inestimable profession of London Cab Driver and wielder of The Knowledge. And Henry splutters a bit at your caution but does not get a chance to form any real objection. He and the cabby share a commiseratory shrug over 'wimin, hey'.

The Harrods bags are subtle, but still unmistakably Harrods. The staff and other shoppers in Joules eye them enviously.

Emma didn’t care if the cabbie was offended or not. That was his problem. Neither him nor Henry could probably imagine what it was like growing up counting every penny, but she could. Her mother would have killed for losing so much as a scarf, let alone a designer dress. You learn to take care of what little you had when you didn’t have much, and that habit didn’t go away just because someone else was footing the bill.

She allowed them to have their little ‘wimin’ moment. Boys would be boys, and she wasn’t going to explain herself to them.

The brown leather boots she picked for him were sitting in a box next to her. She was sitting, one leg crossed over the other, leaning causally on the bench as she waited for him to step out from the changing room.

"Mm…not bad" she smiled thinly as she looked at him, impressed with her handiwork, and the subject matter. She really could be doing this all day, but she was sure Henry wouldn’t have the patience for trying out five more outfits "Try the boots on"
May 5, 2025 1:01 pm
- Emma -

"Are they my size?" Henry asks, more as a 'if they are, why do I need to try them on', than out of any doubt for your abilities. He might blame you later if he gets blisters, so best to get him to try them for hot-spots.

"You, uh, getting anything for yourself?" He asks, it being a bit hard to say no, now that he has established a pattern.

May 5, 2025 1:25 pm
"Size twelve" she confirmed "But you should still try them on, to make sure you’re comfortable in them" she invited him to sit next to her so he could comfortably pull the boots on "I’m already set for the outdoors, but thank you" He spent enough money on her today, and even though it wouldn’t make any difference to him, she didn’t want him thinking she was only there because she got something out of it, even if it was (mostly) the truth. Besides, real estate was in short supply in her tiny closet. She wasn’t going to waste it on more outdoor gear, when she could fill it with risqué dresses. "there" she said to him once he stood up again and walked a few steps in his new boots "How do they feel?"

"Er... OK?" Henry seems oddly gratified that you don't want anything from him. It is always touch-and-go with making him feel like he is adding value vs just worth being around.

Emma was used to men looking, eyes following her a little too long than they should. And truth be told, she didn’t mind. It was flattering, even a little thrilling. It was nice to feel wanted. So while she hasn’t intended to tempt him (this time), she stayed crouching by his side for a few long breaths, letting him look before finally standing up and tugging on her blouse.

"I’ll go grab you a few pairs of extra socks" she pretended as if she hasn’t noticed anything "If we’re hiking in the rain, you’ll want a dry spare"

She didn’t wait for his reply, and just turned and walked toward the shelves again, giving him the minute he clearly needed to calm himself down.

Benji shakes his head. "I don’t think she had a chance to use it. She touched it and got ‘zapped’ unconscious and then she got arrested as soon as she woke up. I don’t know where it ended up after that, although I suspect the people who arrested her took it. Lizabeth said they were wearing suits and army uniforms."

"That is not good." Yasmine says with a shudder. "The thought of the army in control of a genie lamp... the damage one well-meaning general could do... Fleeing to France is become more and more appealing.

"Was Jacob involved?" She asks. "Because that might explain why I have sensed ... I suppose, now that you mention it, 'army-like' people watching the shop for the past few days." That seems like a bit of a shorter time-frame than they have been watching you, but maybe you were just more observant? It is not like they were watching her.

"They’re surprisingly fun. You get locked in a room and have to solve clues to escape. It’s silly, but it makes you think, and the time limit tests if you can perform under pressure"

She was just as surprised as he looked. Henry wasn’t the type to go for whimsical diversions, and she didn’t expected him to actually say 'yes'. With a smile plastered on her face, she pulled out her phone and checked for the nearest venue.

There was one just around the corner, but unfortunately, it turned out to be ‘fully booked for today’, which was hardly surprising. Everyone was looking for something to do indoors on rainy days like these. But before she could say anything, Henry pulled out his wallet. She didn’t catch exactly how much he handed over; all she heard was him telling the receptionist to "just tell the other group there’s a plumbing issue or something."

The next thing she knew, they were being led into a dimly lit Victorian-style room with Faux dark wood panels, velvet drapes and rows of books lining the shelves. They were handed period costumes of deerstalkers and cloaks (She fought the urge to bite on the plastic Calabash – who knows how many other people had it in their mouth). "You won’t be able to buy your way out of this one" she teased, then stepped closer to adjust his hat, even though there was no real need to.

"There is always a price, if you push hard enough." Henry says in reply to your 'can't buy your way out'.

He looks a little uncomfortable by your fiddling with his costume. "What do we do?" He asks looking around blankly. "Do we roll dice?"

What do you do?
May 7, 2025 5:46 am
"No. We’re solving the murder of Mrs. Weatherby" she stepped over to the tall bookcase lining the far wall "Search for clues. Look for anything that doesn’t belong"

Her fingertip tracing the spines of the books, she scanned until she found the one real book hidden among the fakes. She tugged it free and flipped though the pages. About three quarters through, a thin slip of paper flutter to the floor. It had some old fashioned code written on it, with series of numbers and letters that clearly meant something…
OOC:

DO we roll dice? Or assume Emma managed to impress Henry with her wits too?

"Ah." With that example, Henry seems to finally get how this works. "Are they linear? Like, do we need to solve this one before we look for more ... clues?" He asks, taking the paper and looking at the cipher with interest. He is a number guy.

What do you do?
May 7, 2025 6:52 am
"Not really," says Benji, frowning. "There have been people watching me and I've been here a few times but Jacob wasn't directly involved. Besides, he's been out of town for days now..."

"Merde!" Yasmine exclaims. "Now they are going to be watching me! Sometimes you bring so much trouble with you, Benji." She might have a point. Once 'they' realised Lizabeth did not have the artifact they may well have expanded their watchlist to those you have had contact with.

The frog is doing an excellent job of staying just out of reach while not seeming to put too much effort into it. You don't see anything for it to eat in here, and it may be looking a little anemic.

May 7, 2025 7:12 am

"Some of them are. Some aren’t. It depends on how the room is designed. There could be red herrings too, just to mess with us"
She smiled as he took the slip of paper off her hands, pleased that he was getting into it. He did have an analytical mind and a head for numbers, so he would probably make a quicker run thorough the cypher then her "See what you can make of it. I’ll keep searching for more clues…"

She had a blast playing detective. Solving a fictional murder case felt oddly comforting, because it could actually be solved. All the clues were planted, and the logic followed through. It was in stark contract to her real-life investigation into Eliot’s disappearance, that so far turned up nothing but frustration. Real life wasn’t like a game. Tracks has been covered. Witnesses, like Teddy, vanishing. Every time she came close to a lead, it slipped from her fingers. There were very powerful people who didn’t want him found, and that investigation felt like trying to navigate through a quagmire, without a map or compass.

So when Henry unlocked the final compartment, she felt a small surge of excitement. If only the real world could make that much sense! Then again, she could only imagine what a rush she would get solving one of her REAL cases. Maybe she will have better luck over the upcoming weekend…

As they stepped outside she handed her costume coat back to the receptionist and went to the locker to retrieve her bags. "That was nice" she told him, then added, because she was still playing a different sort of game "Couldn’t have made it without you"

"I don't know that that is true." Henry demurs concerning your flattery. "Is that really what your ... work is like? Investigative journalism?" He thought it was mainly just puff-pieces. "Surely your books can't... you know... need real world investigations?"

What do you do?
May 7, 2025 11:41 am
"I don’t actually do investigate journalism. You’ve seen the kinds of pieces I write" she reminded him "But even that needs some real legwork. I can’t write about a new nightclub, a gallery, or a show, that I haven’t been to. People would quickly call me out for faking it. And besides, I would be missing out on all the fun just making things up" she smiled slyly at him

"And for my books...research helps make them feel more real. And never know what kind of inspiration you might find talking and meeting real people" she stopped short of telling him just how much ‘inspiration’ she was drawing out of her real life these days. Her next book would almost be like reading her personal journal.

She paused to check the time on her phone, before looking back at him "Anyways, It’s getting late, and I should be heading back. I want to be home before David arrives from work."

"Still, you are quite good at it." He takes in the whole puzzle and clues thing. He seemed to enjoy it well enough, you chose well.

"Ah, yes. Anton was 'getting a bite to eat'. I will tell him meet us at the car. Then we can drop you." Henry says, poking at his phone while barely looking at it.

Wait? How does he know 'Anton'? When did he get the cabby's number? He is also quite good at what he does... which is schmoozing.

What do you do?
May 7, 2025 12:10 pm
Emma was always susceptible to flattery, and even though it has been years since they’ve broken up, she still felt warm and fuzzy inside when he praised her. The thought of making him regret dumping her would be the icing on the shopping-spree cake.

She wasn’t surprised when he mentioned the cabbie’s name, or for having his number. It made sense. How else would he have arranged for Anton to be ready for them? Still, she couldn’t help but feel impressed by how smoothly everything had gone. With all the chaos in her life: Sarah, Pers, Eliot’s disappearance, and even David’s promotion woes, she was feeling like she was drowning in everyone else’s problems. It was refreshing to be with someone who not only didn’t burden her with his problems, but actually took the reins and made things easier. For once, it felt like she could lean back and let someone else handle things, something she hadn’t realized how much she needed until now.

"That’s perfect," she said, the smile genuine this time. Clutching her bags, she fell into step beside him, walking close to him as they headed back toward the underground parking lot.
May 8, 2025 3:28 am
"Surely they can’t follow around everyone I talk to," Benji remarks, making another lunge for the frog. It leaps out of the way at the last second and he lands hard on his elbows. He hisses in frustration.

You have to wait a moment for Anton, the taxi driver, to arrive, still wiping burger sauce from his face. "Sorry about that, gov'nor." He says.

"That's quite alright." Henry is gracious in his superiority as you load your bags back into the cab.

Henry directs the taxi to your door, seemingly not needing any effort to recall the address. Despite knowing his name and having his number in his phone, Henry is not overly friendly with the driver, just another employee.

As you pull up in the alley outside, Henry looks uncomfortable. You get the feeling he is unsure —which is not like him, at all— unsure, possibly, about offering to help you carry your bags upstairs.

"You said 'military'." Yasmine points out. "They have an army of people."

The cat, who has been watching quietly from the rafters, sees you playing with the frog and leaps down to join you, positioning itself on the other side of the pond-edge where the frog is staying in the shallows. This might help you catch the frog, but you are bigger, and the frog may see you as the main threat to be avoided, and, if the cat gets the frog it may go badly for the frog.

"It has been fun today" she did notice the uncharacteristic hesitation in his face. She didn't know what it was about, only that she didn't like it. "The weekend. Yeah." Henry agrees. He still does not sound all that enthused about your attendance, even after the time you spent with him on preparation. He waves and the taxi pulls away, being careful not to splash you with road-water.

Emma gave Sarah terse ‘hello’ when she walked into the apartment. She decided against asking if she found a job yet, or if she made any plans to move out. It’s only been a day since they’ve talked about, plus, she was in such a good mood after her shopping spree that she didn’t want to sour her evening. But if Sarah didn’t make plans to move out by the time she came back from the weekend retreat, she was going to get a lot pushier about it. Up to and including literally pushing her out the front door.

She carried her bags to the bedroom, and began hanging her new dressers in the closet. Her eyes stopped on that little red dress she got for Arundel, and her lips curled into a grin.

I did promise David, didn’t I?

Without hesitation, she peeled off her clothes and slipped the tight dress over her body. It didn’t take more then a few minutes to complete the look; bold red lipstick, untying her ponytail to allow her hair to fall loose over her shoulders, and lastly – the matching red high heels.
Like always, she admired her appearance in the mirror, spending more time than it took her to actually put the dress on, before walking back into the kitchen and picking up the knife, chopping vegetables for the salad like it was the most natural thing in the world. She kept one ear on the hallway the entire time though, waiting for the sound of the key in the lock...

That evening, Persephone tried to find information on the whispered one, "Barb", that phone number, demon contracts, and more, but it is all a waste of time. Obviously. She knew it would be, but doing it kept her busy, rather than thinking endlessly about what she should do. Should I call the number? What do I say if I do? How do I get 'Barb' to give me the contract? Is she just another flunkie? Is this like an endless chain of middle managers that can keep passing me to their supervisor, but you never get to someone who can do anything about anything? My god these people are good at what they do. I hate it. And so on, and on, and on.

It takes two Xanax and a few glasses of wine before she is able to sleep.

The next morning, Persephone awakens with a headache. Today is the day she promised to take Circe shopping. And it is the day she must orchestrate a first encounter with Viviana Norwood. She reviews what she has learned thus far: she is an Italian-British woman, about 30, who works in banking tech at HSBC, specializing in stock market tech. She is a closeted queer, single, and lives in the City.

She looks at Barb's number once more before sighing and finally venturing out of her room to get coffee, knowing that she is likely to encounter an excited Circe ready to shop till she drops.

Benji freezes, hoping that, if he doesn’t make any sudden moves, the cat will scare the frog toward him, rather than the other way around. He doesn’t begrudge the cat her prey — everyone needs to eat, after all— but he knows cats like to play with their food and that’s very poor manners, in his opinion.

Sarah goggles at your dress. She worked in a place where she was around 'attractive' scantily-clad (being generous with the term 'clad') women all the time, so the ... coverage —or lack thereof— should not be a factor, but she looks vaguely uncomfortable. And why wear it in the middle of the week, at home? She is not sure if this some sort of standing-date-night, and what she is expected to do during.

Your aloofness since 'the fight' is making her very worried, and she has withdrawn into herself again, much like when she first arrived. Before the fight there were even days when she did not wear the shapeless, all-covering jersey, but that has been a constant since then.

It is still a while before David is expected back home.

Slow as you are to get started, Circe is even slower, and you have to cajole her out of bed. She is currently on a: "Coffee is not vegan. Have you seen the conditions those people work in!" form of vegetarianism (as well as a "almonds are not vegan", "avos are not vegan", and "honey is not vegan" trip), though she does not actually manage to maintain 'Vegan edge', barely managing 'vegetarian' on a bad day. So the lack of early-morning-pick-me-up slows down the start as well.

• Has Circe seen you eating meat? Or have you managed to hide it, so far?

Circe is also sore all over, from the kickboxing. She has not noticed that face her looks fine, no black eye or anything. Do you notice? (The poultice has fallen off and left flakes on the pillow-case, but they will wash out.)

Emma would be lying if she claimed making Sarah uncomfortable wasn't part of her plan. Another subtle (or not so subtle) reminder that she overstayed her welcome, and that her presence was disruptive to Emma's and David's routine. Not that David would ever take her right there on the kitchen's counter (he wasn't bold enough for that), but the idea that the possibility was somehow 'off the table' because of Sarah sleeping in their living room somehow irked her.

Still, she would have said something, if Sarah didn't end up having a full blown panic attack every time she tried. She couldn't get over how bashful and meek she was. This was supposed to be a stripper? She imagined it would take someone more flirtatious, chatty, confident with her body. Emma honestly couldn't picture her dancing on a stage, let alone seducing anyone into spending money. She only came alive around David. Emma had no idea how her husband managed to draw her out, and at this point, she didn’t care. She wasn’t looking to form a bond with her.

She allowed the silence to stretch a bit longer, letting Sarah marinate in her discomfort, before signing inwardly to herself "Can you grab me the feta, and half a red onion from the fridge?" she said without looking up from the cutting board. Maybe giving her something to do would help with her social anxiety. And if not, it would at least make her useful...

Benji pounces on the frog with a triumphant "Aha!"

A moment later, he staggers back up onto his feet and wades out of the pond, holding the frog in gently but firmly clasped hands. "I’ve got to go find somewhere to put the poor little fellow now… I’ll leave you to the books?"

Emma felt like she was dealing with an anxious for year old. Sarah's lack of spark was starting to grate on her.
"Grab the olive oil" she said, without looking up "Top shelf. Then rinse the cherry tomatoes"
She was ready with another task for her every time she finished one. She wasn't demanding, just precise, giving Sarah something to do while they waited for David to arrive.

"Okay, see you later!" Unable to use his hands, Benji awkwardly hooks his umbrella on his elbow and then shoulders his way out the door. He holds the door open for a few seconds in case the cat wants to leave (although he suspects she won’t) and then ventures out into the rainy streets of London. There’s a very nice lake in St James’s park that he thinks might be a good place for a frog to live.

Persephone sits at her kitchen bar, sipping a freshly brewed pour-over coffee, ground from whole beans she bought at a boutique coffee roaster in the city. She considers making some bacon and eggs but decides it would antagonize Circe. Circe had seen her eat meat before and had not held back in how disgusting and immoral she thought it all was. While Circe is in town, Persephone is mostly sticking to a vegetarian (or pescatarian) diet.

When Circe emerges, Persephone stifles her gasp. Her black eye is totally gone!

Outside it is also cold, the sun has not shone on the city in weeks, and with all this rain St. James park is nearly all lake. The frog probably won't 'drown', but you don't normally see frogs in winter? Don't they brumate, or something?

Persephone laughs and says, Yes, you look like your usual goblin self! Were you worried what people would think if they saw you with a black eye? Honey, you're already going to be judged when they hear you speak with that California accent!"

She laughs again and pours a cup of coffee for her sister and slides it across the counter toward her. Then she gets a serious look on her face. She says, "We need to decide something very important. What are we shopping for today? I want to take your Canary Wharf; lots of luxury shops there!"

Of course, Persephone had an ulterior motive for choosing Canary Wharf; that's where the HSBC HQ is! And she is hoping to encounter Viviana at Black Sheep Coffee, the only queer, artsy coffee shop near the HSBC building. Of course, Viviana might choose to go to a different shop; she might not be a coffee drinker; and she might not be there when Persephone stops in. But Persephone is unsure how else to orchestrate this accidental encounter! Her plan is to stop by the shop several times throughout the day, pleading with Circe that she has developed a coffee addiction that she must tend to.

"I don't have an accent." Circe declares, pulling her nose up at your offered coffee in a judgemental way... though she also looks wistfully at the cup and takes a deep breath. She ignores your 'goblin' comment, still being too jetlagged to participate in sisterly banter.

"Sure, that sounds great." She says, brightening up when you suggest 'luxury shopping at Canary Wharf' an activity she can get behind, at a place she has heard of... though she half-thought it was a harbour... or a Star Trek character...

Persephone shakes her head and smiles, saying, "Honey, [I]everyone[/i] has an accent. Nothing to be ashamed of. Wait, you're not drinking coffee either? This black; no dairy, no sugar. Come on now, you'll need the energy. Don't be a prude."

She slides the coffee a bit closer to Circe.

"And coffee does not give you energy. It only makes you feel like it does." There is definitely a note of longing in her voice, but she is adamant... for now. You have set the idea in her mind and she may well crumble when you get to Black Sheep Coffee and the full force of its aroma.

May 11, 2025 3:53 pm
Persephone laughs and rolls her eyes at Circe's mock parochialism and then smiles slyly at Circe's resistance to coffee. She says, "If merely feeling like I have energy still allows me to do things without which I would not be able to do, which coffee most definitely does, then how is it importantly different from actual energy?"

She laughs at her own little bit of sophistry and says, "OK, let's get going. Those shoes aren't going to buy themselves!"
OOC:
And yes, Persephone also has always been the kind of person to utilize sophistical argumentation, loopholes, and ambiguities in language to her advantage, whether it be in a business contract or a silly chat with her sister. Persephone has not yet realized how well suited she is for her new 'line of work,' though at some level she is beginning to suspect it.

"I definitely need more shoes." Circe agrees. "Everything I own is damp. I really was not expecting the weather to be this bad."

The water-pressure in your condo is excellent, and more than adequate to keep up with two simultaneous showers —if you choose to do so. It might feel like ages ago, but is only yesterday that you were bitten... no, 'it was just a scratch'... by the vampire, Chablis. You have not healed from that, though you can ignore any discomfort and it does not really affect you. You will have to remind yourself about the new dressing if Circe talks you into buying new dresses. Pity Zhiyu could not recommend an ointment for that as well, but it never came up.

Maybe I'll get lucky. Ahem.

Not finding her, she puts away the phone as Circe emerges. Persephone smirks and snarks, saying, "Ah yes, your patented 'poor American college student' chic. I love it, but we need to get you a new look, girl!" Persephone smiles and Circe knows she's joking, mostly.

Circe smacks her playfully and the two head out to shop--destination, Canary Wharf.

Benji figures the frog knows best what frogs do in winter and that, if he tries to intervene, he will probably just get in its way.

St James’s Park is fenced off to stop people walking or cycling on the flooded footpaths but Benji just hops over the low metal fence and sets the frog down on a nice muddy patch of grass.

"Goodbye and good luck," he says, with a very formal bow. "Watch out for the pelicans."

By the time you get to Canary Wharf, Circe is complaining about a headache. It transpires that she quit coffee when she arrived in London and you can point her to a quick web-search on caffeine-withdrawal-headaches which makes her pull a face. She is not sure if this proves her point about fake-energy being 'bad', or proves your point about how it makes you feel being the whole point, but the headache is not something she likes and she invariably drawn to the coffee shop to remedy it.

Black Sheep Coffee, it turns out, is very queer, if you know what to look for. Circe —as a straight— does not recognise this, but, closeted as Viviana is, this is the sort of place she might try to avoid... but it is your only lead, and it 'feels right' (but, then, that's the point of coffee).

Viviana is not there now, but the relief on Circe's face as she takes a sip (possibly placebo as it is too quick for any physiological change to have happened yet) suggests you will be back.

As they arrive at Black Sheep Coffee, Persephone opens the door and gestures for Circe to enter, as if she were Willy Wonka introducing the children to the factory. She takes a surprising amount of enjoyment watching Circe relish that first sip.

She and Circe linger a bit until Persephone can put it off no longer. "OK. let's get you out of those soaking trainers and into some proper shoes! Hmm, let's see. Kitten heels from LK Bennett, some statement boots from Dune London... maybe some streetwear from Circle Collective? Yes, I think so. And after shoes, some proper clothes! Ok...let's go!"

"Company" card in hand, Persephone takes Circe by the hand and out into the wonderful world of luxury capitalism.
