Dedly Journeys in the Latter Earth

It is a time in the Earth's distant future. Empires have risen and fallen countless times over untold millennia. Sometimes humans brought about their own destruction, but Outsiders were the worst of all. These aliens subjugated humanity, enslaved many, treated others as food, reshaped the land and chattel to suit their malevolent purposes, and drove survivors deep underground where they plotted their revenge.

Magic is born from the Legacy, the accumulated mass of arcane laws and thaumic energies that have accrued over the eons. It began during human civilization's brightest period as a product of science and enlightenment, then was twisted to suit the conquering Outsiders, and ultimately forged into the tool for humanity's revenge against them.

In these days of the Latter Earth, the Legacy has decayed. The magic is not as it once was. Constant meddling with the Legacy has rendered it into a moth-eaten patchwork quilt of phantasmagorical laws and eldritch energies. Humanity and the remaining aliens are trapped here on Earth, forced to abide by primitive levels of technology, shackled to broken laws of physics. But mages study the workings of the Legacy and still use it to perform wondrous things. Some aspire to repair it, returning it to its former glory, either to benefit humanity or selfishly empower themselves.

Yet all is not lost. There is time for new heroes to arise from the ashes of dead empires to forge new nations that aspire to be something greater. In these days of the Latter Earth, will you be among them?

Unfortunately, I've had attrition in my Worlds Without Number game (WWN) and now would like to add two or three people to make up for those losses. We're reaching a point where the addition of new characters will fit naturally into the storyline without the use of a shoehorn.

This is an open-ended campaign whose intent is to take 1st level characters and build them up into 10th level heroes.

Currently, the group is escorting a merchant, his daughter, and several coffers from the Scarlet Princes—a collection of provinces under the rule of the Fifth Dynasty—to a keep lying just south of the country of Runom. The route lies where the Black Spine Mountains meet the Choking Dunes, two forbidding lands where bloodthirsty beasts prowl and ancient beings lie hidden.

In essence, they're traveling from the red star on the lower right to the one on the upper left.

The adventurers were making good progress along a hidden road when some abomination arose from beneath a bridge one night and frightened the horses. The merchant and his daughter were asleep inside the covered wagon when the horses took flight into the desert in the midst of a sandstorm.

The party eventually located their patrons and are now in the midst of rescuing them from their captors. If good fortune smiles upon them, they will escape and find their way back to the road, which is where I'd like them to encounter you.

What to Expect: So far, we've had violence, blood and gore, NPC non-sexual nudity (left to player imagination), adult language and situations. It's a rough world, so expect your typical human depravity.

Game Duration: Open-ended, but if players want to take a break between adventures, that can be arranged.

Post Frequency: Three times/week. More so during battles.

Player Experience Requirements: None. This is the first time for the players. You can get a free copy of the Worlds Without Number rulebook on DriveThruRPG.

Game System in a Nutshell: WWN is considered by some to be OSR, but I'll leave that up to others to decide. It uses a 2D6 system for tasks with character skills and attribute bonuses providing DMs. Combat is D20-based. It has a Shock Damage rule which makes combat more lethal. If a person misses but their weapon's shock rating is greater than the opponent's AC, then damage is still done. Magic is powerful but takes great effort, thus used in limited fashion.

Characters: WWN offers three basic archetypes of characters: warriors, experts, and mages. But these can be mixed together to come up with interesting adventurers of the player's choosing. Right now, we have openings for whatever you'd like to try (we have a Healer (expert/mage), an automaton warrior, and a high mage), and I have dedicated character creation threads for each player to figure it out. If you have questions about what types of characters can be created, please feel free to ask below.

All are welcome, no matter your demographic or GP experience. If you're interested, post your interest below.

Hey. I have the free rules, but don't have a lot of experience with the rules other than having read through them a couple times and creating a character for a game that lasted less time than it took to put together my character.

I'd be interested in playing to get more familiar with the system.

Hey RageRed! I thought you were great as Iryna in Eat the Reich. It'd be great for you to join us. :)

I'll send you an invite soon.

I haven't played the game system and like RageRed. I have the basic downloaded, but actually I haven't looked through it to create a character. I think that I downloaded it like two years ago and appears the game never made start enough even for me to make a character. So, I think it would be interesting to give this a try.

I will admit that I had never heard of this system until seeing this game posting. I downloaded the free rules last night, quite expansive for a free offering. The system, world, and character options are quite interesting. I particularly like the half class system - simple and effective at giving additional options.

I love learning new systems and this one seems like it will be fun.

I have heard great things about Worlds Without Numbers, and I have the book. But unfortunately, I didn't have any time to go through it. I would love to give it a try if a free space is available.

Ok, I'll close this for new applicants. If there's still interest, please feel free to add your name below, and if we lose any more players, you'll be the first to be contacted.

Rather than pick and choose between the three of you, I'll bring you all on board to see if this game works for you. :)

Invites to be sent out sooner rather than later.

I will add my name to the reserve list. I have started reading the rule book and seems interesting.
