3B. Rylek's Folly

Mar 26, 2025 11:46 pm
Zix sat cross-legged on their bed in the cramped room they shared with their three roommates.

"Zix, I heard that Rylek's looking for someone," Helena's voice cut through the room, sharp and clear. "He needs a… well, a lookalike. Someone to deliver something for him in Blackveil. He didn't say what the item is, but knowing Rylek Timbers, it’s probably something… delicate. Something that requires a certain... subtlety."

"Or maybe," Hori piped up from the corner, leaning against the wall, "it’s a scam. It’s Rylek, after all. He probably needs you to take a fake item and get into some shady back-alley deal. You know how these things go."

"If Rylek’s willing to pay..." Zix said, standing up from the bed and stretching their limbs.

"Rylek wants to meet you at the Verdant Hollow Gardens," Helena said, her tone laced with an air of caution. "The southern edge of the Central Campus. It’s a bit out of the way from the main paths, so you’ll have some privacy. He mentioned something about needing to talk away from prying eyes. Typical."

"Just be careful," She warned in the end, her tone serious for once. "Blackveil’s not like Misthaven. You’ll need to watch your back. Not everyone there is as... friendly as they seem."

Zix shows up at the gardens incognito, having become a gentleman in an attire of subdued colours. The Critic was high above, helping check the area for threats, assess best retreat paths and the like. Would be awkward to be caught flat-footed if this is some kind of prank. Or worse.

The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of damp earth and enchanted blooms as Zix strolled along the winding stone paths of Verdant Hollow Gardens. Their gait was measured, their gloved hands clasped neatly behind their back, exuding the calm confidence of someone who belonged here—just another scholar enjoying the morning quiet.

The gazebo came into view, its ivy-wrapped columns standing as a natural veil against prying eyes. And there, near the steps, was Rylek Timbers. The gnome stood fidgeting, the weight of nerves pressing down on his small frame. He adjusted his red, pointy hat for the third time in as many seconds, his fingers tapping restlessly against the worn denim of his jacket. Every so often, he would glance over his shoulder, his wide eyes scanning the garden as if expecting something—or someone—to jump out at him.

Zix took their time approaching, footsteps quiet on the stone path. Even without the Critic’s aerial advantage, they could read Rylek’s body language well enough. He wasn’t just nervous; he was scared. His usual twitchy energy had been dialed up to something bordering on panic.

Note that the observation thing is directed at threats/eavesdroppers in general mostly. I didn't think of assessing Rylek's state yet.
Having ensured that it's safe to approach and talk, Zix stepped closer and greeted the prospective client quietly. "Hello. You had an interest in having a somewhat private audience?
OOC:
Belated question: does Zix have the ability to take on slightly larger/smaller shapes, like a gnome or a tauren? I initially assumed that a gnome would be too drastic a difference in size, but the invitation implies that it's likely something that Zix would even consider, and thus maybe possible?"

OOC:
Yup. But you had an Opportunity in my DR roll, so I gave you Rylek's for that. No threats.
"Yeah," he muttered, shifting from foot to foot. "I, uh… made a bad investment." He cast another wary glance around the gardens before lowering his voice. "I got my hands on this potion—dark liquid, almost like ink. It’s supposed to enhance Mutatio spells, make shapeshifting and transformations more fluid, more powerful." His mouth twisted into something between a grimace and a frown. "Thing is… I think it’s messing with me. My magic’s been off ever since I tried it. Spells don’t settle right. Sometimes it changes too much, sometimes not at all. Feels like I’m losing control."

Rylek took a steadying breath and held up a small cloth-wrapped bottle. "I need to get rid of it. Give it back to the guy who sold it to me—if he’ll even take it. And if possible…" He hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "I’d like to get some of my money back. I paid five hundred gold for this damn thing, and it’s not just worthless—it’s dangerous."

He shook his head, frustrated. "I can’t be the one to return it, though. If I show up looking desperate, he’ll just laugh me off—or worse, take it back and throw me out with nothing. But you… you could pull it off. Get him to take it back. Maybe even recover some of what I lost."
OOC:
You cannot change your total mass, but if you combine the shape-shifting with more mundane means (baggy clothes, etc) it would be feasible to impersonate a gnome. Or if you roll for Mutatio, more drastic changes are possible... Or maybe "Rylek" shapeshifted using Mutatio magic and would not show up as himself...

"Well, that's an interesting challenge. To both assess the difficulties of the challenge, and better prepare for performing the task, I need to know as much as I can about the situation of the purchase, about what the seller knows about you, what happened and how. I will need all the details, including the kind that neither of the two of you would want any outsider to know but that both of you do know. You will probably tempted to engage in a lie of misstatement or omission, but beware that anything like this can result in the plan failing entirely.

Also, do you still have some of that potion left, or did you drink all of it leaving only the container?"

Rylek's lips pressed into a thin line as he listened to Zix’s measured words. He let out a slow breath, tugging at the hem of his jacket. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. No lying, no holding back. I bought it in Blackveil, a few weeks before the semester started," he admitted. "I was… looking for something to give me an edge. Something to boost my magic. I’m not good at magic. I can do minor illusions, little tricks, but anything beyond that? A disaster. I was already stressing about exams before the year even started, so I figured—why not get some help?"

He shook his head, letting out a bitter chuckle. "I should’ve known better."

Rylek sighed, rubbing his temples before continuing. "The tavern was called The Thorn & Tallow. It’s tucked into a side street near Blackveil’s eastern docks—not far from where the warehouses start. Seedy place, not too dangerous if you keep to yourself, but the kind of spot where people go to buy and sell things they don’t want the Dragon Guard sniffing around. I met the alchemist there—if that’s even what he was. Guy never gave a name, just went by ‘Brass.’ Shorter than you, taller than me. Lean, kind of wiry. His hair was dark, tied back, and he had this thin mustache that didn’t quite connect. Wore these brass-rimmed goggles, real worn-down coat with alchemical stains all over it. He talked fast, like he was always thinking three steps ahead, and he didn’t ask too many questions when I told him what I needed."

Rylek swallowed, rubbing his arms as if he could shake off the memory. "He sold me a set of ten doses—this bottle, right here," he tapped the wrapped bundle, "for five hundred gold. Said it would ‘strengthen the natural flow of transformation’ or whatever. Make Mutatio easier, more instinctive. I didn’t question it. I just wanted something to make my magic work."

His expression darkened. "I took a single dose. Just one. First day of school. And everything went to hell."

He let out a sharp breath, glancing around as if someone might overhear. "At first, I thought it was fine. I felt... attuned, I guess? My magic felt eager, like it wanted to be used. But then it got weird. Spells didn’t settle right. My illusion flickered when I wasn’t casting. And then..." He clenched his fists. "Then the mimic."

"You were there," Rylek muttered, exasperated. "That chair tried to eat me. I sat down, same as always, and then—bam! Jaws, teeth, nightmare fuel. And I don’t know if it was just bad luck, or if something about that potion messed with me, made it happen. But I’m not taking any chances."

He exhaled, trying to steady himself. "There are nine doses left. I stopped using it the moment things got weird, and I haven’t touched it since. I don’t know much else about Brass. I only met him that once. He didn’t seem like the type to care what happened after the sale, but I bet he’ll remember me. I was probably the easiest five hundred gold he made that night."

Rylek looked up at Zix, eyes filled with a mix of desperation and hope. "So? Think you can work with that?"

"I suggest you save up one dose for analysis. Whether you want to admit that you've taking one to the university's healing staff or not is up to you. But it's probably in your interest to ask someone you can trust to run tests regarding what it even is, what are the consequences for you, and what sort of measures you might need to take to mitigate any drastic consequences.

I will try to return the rest and demand compensation, wearing a face that is reminiscent of yours but more intimidating, a body that is likewise similar to yours in height and gait yet clearly changed, more massive and dangerous-looking. I intend to make the best kind of menacing-yet-magnanimous impression in my repertoire. Would that be an approach you'd approve of me taking on your behalf?"

"Yeah…" he muttered after a moment, rubbing the back of his neck. "Keeping a dose for analysis makes sense. I don’t like the idea of telling the university about this, but… if things keep getting worse, I might not have a choice. I’ll figure out who I can trust to check it out without causing a mess."

His brows knit together as he focused on the second part of Zix’s plan. "As for how you handle Brass" He hesitated, then let out a sharp breath. "Yeah. I like that approach. I just don’t want this turning into a bigger mess, y’know? No fights, no bounties on my head. Just… get as much back as you can without turning him into a long-term problem. Last thing I need is someone in Blackveil deciding they have a grudge against me."

"All right, I'm inclined to try what I can. You might want to save two doses if you plan to take one to a private alchemist for analysis, and only show the other one to the university staff in case of desperation. Up to you.

What are you offering me in case of success? . . or in case this scheme bites me in the behind?"

Rylek exhaled through his nose, his fingers tightening around the bundle. "Yeah… two doses. That’s probably smarter." He nodded to himself, as if trying to convince his own nerves to settle.

At Zix’s follow-up, he gave a dry chuckle, though there was an edge of nervousness to it. "Fifty gold upfront, plus half of whatever you manage to squeeze out of Brass. That’s the deal." He shifted uncomfortably. "But if this does go south… and you get in trouble because of it…"

He hesitated, then sighed. "Look, I don’t have a fortune to throw around, and I can’t promise to yank you out of a dungeon or anything. But I can promise I won’t let you take the fall alone. If something goes wrong, I’ll back you up—tell the truth, admit I sent you, whatever’s needed. Not saying that’ll fix everything, but I won’t pretend I had nothing to do with it. I’m trusting you to handle this the way you think is best. And in return, if it does blow up in our faces, I’ll take responsibility with you."

A pause, then a nervous half-smile. "Still interested?"

And after that, Zix went to enact its plan, taking on a small but muscular and menacing shape, giving just enough hints that he is Rylek. Enough to not look like a normal goblin, but rather like some sort of half-morphed chimera.

Having rehearsed several ways of delivering the demand, he went to the designated shop, physically and mentally prepared to make the right impression on the potion merchant.

OOC:
The idea is to get both Shapeshifting and Pride to align towards ensuring success. But if and only if either of the two is inapplicable, Zix will use Amplifico to enhance social attributes instead.

Zix moved through the landscape with steady purpose, his altered form compact yet imposing. Broad-shouldered and thick-limbed, he carried just enough hints of Rylek’s frame to suggest a connection, but the rest—heavyset muscle, unnervingly sharp eyes, and a faintly bestial quality—was all deliberate fabrication. A creature halfway between gnome and something else.

The walk to Blackveil took nearly an hour, the well-trodden road growing quieter as he neared the city. The towering black stone walls loomed ahead, their jagged edges swallowing the morning light. Mist clung to the base of the ramparts, rolling like a living thing.

At the city entrance, the Dragon Guard stood in formation, their polished armor reflecting the morning light. A mix of humans, elves, and a single broad-winged dragonborn, they carried an air of rigid authority. Their insignias—Misthaven’s sigil —were emblazoned on their tabards, a reminder that despite Blackveil’s autonomy, the university’s protection remained firm.

Zix had expected the inspection, and when one of the guards—a tall, stone-faced woman with silver-threaded braids—stepped forward, he already had his expression set in place: mildly impatient, but not hostile.

"Purpose of visit?" she asked, her tone clipped but neutral.

The woman narrowed her eyes but didn’t press it. Instead, she gestured for another guard to step forward—a younger recruit with an open spellbook hovering beside him. With a practiced flick of his fingers, the recruit whispered an incantation, and a faint shimmer of golden energy pulsed around Zix’s form.

A detection spell. Searching for illegal enchantments, dangerous items, or any signs of contraband. Zix kept still, letting the magic wash over him without resistance. He had planned for this. His disguise wasn’t held together by active magic—it was purely his racial ability, something intrinsic, something no simple magic detection spell would unravel or complain about.

After a long pause, the recruit gave a slow nod to his superior. "Nothing suspicious."

The silver-braided guard studied Zix for a moment longer, as if committing his face to memory. Then, finally, she stepped aside.

With a final nod, Zix stepped forward, slipping past the gates and into the heart of the shadowed city.

'Rylek' walked through the streets of the shady city. He took some detours, cautiously looking around, supposedly to ensure there is no tail. But in truth, he was more interested in what things of interest he could notice during his short stay at the city of secrets. Probably not much.

High above, the Critic was circling around, ready to give hints about anything of particular importance that could be seen with an eye from the sky. Should all be quiet around, it would merely help ensure he took the right paths to the intended destination.

'Gnome-Goblin Rylek'
OOC:
Heading towards the shop, but something worthwhile might delay that slightly (Zix would be curious enough to delay the trip, but level-headed enough to avoid getting entangled in anything on the first such trip, especially while on a mission for a client).

Asking in advance: Once 'Rylek' gets to the shop, which dice would and would not be applicable to the attempt to execute this scheme? (I was thinking of Social, Deceive, Shapeshifting (since the shape is chosen so as to facilitate the scheme), perhaps Pride . . . it's another case where I think the clothes should enable the chosen disguise without needing to bother buying a different attire, but should not provide any dice. The pool does depend on whether you want to resolve the whole scheme as one roll, or break it up into pieces.
