Long ago, there came a time when the People of the Stars yearned for new lands to call home. They heard tales of a distant place, a land of rich waters and fertile fields, known as Valeria. Guided by the spirits of their ancestors, the People set forth on a great journey to find this land, said to be filled with plenty.
Upon their arrival, the People beheld a wondrous world. Valeria was alive with life—a place where rivers flowed freely and the earth bore fruit in abundance. Grateful for the gifts of this land, the ancestors found a great city that cared for their every need, a city constructed with the finest materials they could gather. They shaped the land and bent Valeria to their will.
For a decade they were blessed. But they strayed too far from their purpose. They forgot how to live as we know we should. And so a shadow fell upon them. The voices of their ancestors grew silent, and their gifts and wisdom vanished. A great distance stretched between them and their former home. They could no longer hear the guidance of their kin, and the blessings of the land began to wane.
Without the knowledge and tools they once possessed, the people struggled. Their grand city began to crumble, and they scrabbled in the dust for food as they faced challenges they had long forgotten how to overcome. But Valeria itself rescued them and taught them how to survive, and so the people turned their hearts back to the land. They remembered the old ways—the teachings of their ancestors who had tilled the earth long before them.
Thus, we adapted. We found strength in the soil, learning anew how to plant seeds deep into the earth, coaxing forth nourishment with love and care. We listen to the whispers of nature, observing how the seasons changed and how the sun danced across the sky. That once-great city still lies in the distance, but we are not concerned with its illusory promises, for we know that our life is well-spent. Our life is full and wondrous, and we find joy in shared meals and the cycles of the earth, rather than in the great ambitions of our ancestors.

4999 Union Era
The Lost Colony of Valeri
This is the world you were born into. In the aftermath of the breakdown of civilization on Valeria, power was seized by a group who felt they could control the populace through religious edicts. They were correct. The Union is now remembered only in myth, and the people are more or less at peace. Still, the old city is there within grasp, and it is not uncommon for youths - or other opportunistic individuals - to make forays into the outskirts of the city in order to bring back useful trinkets, engaging baubles, or other wonders of the past. In recent years it's become a near-mandated rite of ascension to adulthood, and you turned 18 this year, which means your expedition to the old city will be happening soon.

Characters should be built at LL0. Since you'll be part of a lost colony, there will be some restrictions on characters, namely:
-- Talents: Talents are chosen as normal. Since they specifically relate to piloting, they'll be dormant at the start.
-- Backgrounds: You will not be able to choose Far Field Team, Hacker, HNP Specialist, Scientist, Spaceborn, Spec Ops, Super Soldier, or Starship Pilot. The other backgrounds can be tweaked to fit the plot. If there is an overriding reason you need one of the listed backgrounds, we can talk about it. I'm pretty flexible, but it'll need to make sense.
-- Gear: You will have only archaic weapons available at the beginning of the game. Other gear can be chosen, but it will be unavailable at the start.
-- Mechs: Build your mech, but remember... No one in living memory has ever seen one; any remembrances of them are mythical.
We will be using COMP/CON to build and track characters. It is free to use, and allows you to share and sync your character with me.
To apply, please build a character in COMP/CON (it takes just a few minutes) and then post the share code in a note to me in a post.

OOC:
This game will post 3/week. I'd like to do it faster, but I have RL limitations, so while I may post more than that, it won't be every week. We are talking Lancer, so there's mechs with all of their huge guns, thousands of missiles, you know the drill. Violence will be a part of the game and things might get messy. I'm not really one for over-the-top gory descriptions, but death and dismemberment are possibilities. I tend to be rather tongue-in-cheek about those topics (unless of course it's your tongue that's been separated from the rest of your body). Other sensitive topics will be handled off-camera unless immediately and unavoidably necessary to plot development. While themes of sexuality, gender, and race will not be the focus of the game, relationships will play a fairly prominent role. That being said, I will also say this: If you are not comfortable with any variety of humans, this is likely not the game for you. This is 15,000 years in the future; whatever social mores or beliefs you may have are not relevant here.Characters should be built at LL0.
