[VTM20] Sabbat Shovelheads Chronicle

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

OpenWorld of DarknessPrivate1 / dayreversia.ch
Buried Shallow is a Vampire the Masquerade game using 20ed/revised rules. The players will assume role of a group of the so-called Shovelheads - disposable Sabbat shock troops. Violently seized, drained of blood, Embraced against their own will, hit over the head with a shovel (hence shovelheads) and finally buried - only to claw their way out amidst a mass of fellow abductees - confused, terrified, ravenous. The main themes of the chronicles are horror (at what you became), survival (as a monster amid other monsters) and adaptation (for failure means death).

The Sabbat is a Sect of vampires that actively shuns the Path of Humanity. For the chronicle that mostly means that a gamut of adult themes and topics will be present. I'm looking at it as fictional portrayal of horror, not realistic depictions of despicable acts. Just as movies like "Saw" are not the actual footage of horrific brutal acts, neither will be this story. I have no interest in torturing the troupe, nor do i view the game as my own personal fetish satisfaction fiction. And neither should you. It is one thing to roleplay slow degeneration into the dark world of vampirism and another to use the game to satisfy your own fantasies. Such players will be removed from the game.

That being said here are some topics that will likely be present: excessive violence and cold blooded murder - strong survive in the Sabbat and many members are way to far removed from Humanity's normal ethics codes to care; body horror - the Tzimisce art of "fleshcrafting" provides ample opportunities to witness the grotesquery of inhuman minds; physical and emotional abuse - for the militant sect that prizes Strength of body and will, these things are the "tough love" type of training and care. What i'm not planning on giving much if any attention to are the topics of sexual nature. Such things interest vampires not and neither do they interest me. In general, this is an [b[ Adult[/b] chronicle, and should be treated as such.

Note on the mind affecting Disciplines - i'm not planning on taking away autonomy from players by using stuff like Dominate on characters. I expect you to extend the same courtesy to your fellow players.

While i'm not making any grandiose plans, i'm hopeful that if the game comes together and the group jive well, we get to experience a long and satisfying chronicle. As for Post Frequency.. Not a fan of setting hard posting rules, as at the end of the day real life comes first. We all play games for fun, so when you're not feeling it, it can be hard to find inspiration to write a thoughtful and composed response. That being said, the nature of the game will likely mean that the group will be staying together the majority of time, which means a lot of back and forth between the player characters. With that in mind it would be prudent to join if you can post at least once every 1-3 days, to not stop the momentum to a crawl. Again, stuff happens, so if you're absent for a 6+ days, i will probably just do a quick post from your character perspective to move the game along - something like "she will nod and follow everybody" or "julius receives an important phone call and has to take it", and then you can just pick up when you're back in action.

Setting. The game takes place in the present. The working idea is that you'll be Embraced in Chicago for an attack on locals and then taken back to Detroit. Relevant Metaplot things - Week of Nightmares happened, Tremere antitribu are still operational. Metaplot stuff that probably won't come up - Tzimisce Eldest and Lasombra are either dead or have already achieved their nebulous goal of transcending vampirism in some way. So no Antediluvian coercion or influences for either clan. Anything else is undetermined for now.

Note on Final Death and PVP - the lives of Cainites in the Sabbat are turbulent and filled with violence. That goes double for shovelheads. You are NOT expected to survive. I will not be actively trying to kill your characters, but giving them "plot armor" will defeat the purpose and undermine the horror of their situation. So i will be leaning on you - players - to support each other and to keep each other safe. While the Sabbat is very much "dog eats dog" type of organization, PVP i would leave behind completely. It's fine for your characters to disagree and argue, but at the end of the day i hope they will become a cohesive unit, a family bonded by grief and loss of their new existence.

The game will be played here, without any additional tools - so no roll20s or discords. Beginners to the VTM and WOD are, of course, welcome. Looking for about 4-6 players.

Applications. For an application i would like you to PM me with your character idea and a short blurb about them. Write as much as you want - you don't need to do a novel, but i will read one. Sheets are not needed at this point, we'll hammer the details out in the "session 0" type thread later. Preference will be given to the more "normal", mundane concepts. It can be enticing to create a character fitting their future role in the Sabbat - the lone wolf veteran survivalist who'll easily adapt - but i'm actually looking for the opposite. Regular people with little to none supernatural connections prior to Embrace. Those, for whom such violent change is truly horrifying. I would also like to learn what you want out of this chronicle - what aspects you would like to see more of and what less and what not at all. How do you see your character adapting and actually surviving the shovelhead process? Anything else that is important to you can and should be mentioned as well.
Clans. To simulate the shovelhead experience better, we'll be rolling for clans. All of the antitribu are up (including Tremere), Harbingers and Blood Brothers are out, Kiasyd and Ahrimanes maybe in. We'll probably weight dice up for more numerous clans - Lasombra, Tzimisce, Brujah, Panders, and down for more rare ones - Salubri, Tremere, Kiasyd. Will discuss it in more detail in the session zero thread - including excluding certain clans for certain people, merits/flaws to add, thin-blood custom Disciplines if someone rolls one, etc.
EDIT: To expand on rolling - meaning that you will make a dice roll (as in d100 for example) that will determine the clan that your character has been Embraced in. Random, not chosen. That's the idea.

I think (hope) that is all. If you have questions, feel free to ask them in the IC thread or via PM.

Good Evening.

Hey folks. Thinking of running a Sabbat chronicle focused on shovelheads. The system will be Vampire the Masquerade 20/revised. My main goals here are to experience running a narrative-first game with bigger emphasis on action sequences and to test out GP itself. My hope is get a solid, long, character driven chronicle off the ground, but we'll see.

Anyone ran anything like this before? Any words of wisdom to impart (especially concerning running oWoD action in pbp format)? If you are interested, what sort of things would you want to see? Included or left out?

Always up for some WoD! We don't see enough of it, IMO. Absolutely interested, and a Sabbat game at that?

As for content I'm pretty open. VtM can go from borderline superheroics to slice of (un)life quite well, so I'm up for whatever.

Wonderful to see this pitched. I just wrapped up a two year Sabbat shovelhead game IRL.

As to tips for running action, I'd just say that it works best of the Storyteller posts more often during that phase so the players aren't left waiting like a week for their next turns. Turn-based combat really slows down the pace of a game and can eat the momentum if you're not careful.

Also, I'd suggest you get a lot of mileage of including a combat status update routinely like a footer, reminding players of what the NPCs are doing.

Lastly, I'm in a ton of games so please take others who have not been so lucky getting into great games first, but if you need another player I'm always ready for VtM.

The slowdown is what i'm afraid of. I heard that nWoD combat rules were a bit more fluid, but i've never touched anything of the New World, so i'm not sure.

I realize that the post is pretty vague on what the game actually is, so i'll make it today after work or tomorrow and add it here. Suffice it say i'm looking to running a horror chronicle. Action and physical conflict will be prevalent due to the nature of the Sect, but not the focus. I suppose i'll just have to try to explain it more eloquently when i get home and organize my thought a bit. If you have any questions though, feel free to ask.

Never played a Sabbat game before, but I'm very much curious. Looking forward to hear more details!

Okay, the game write-up is done, so feel free to apply if it sounds interesting!

It says to apply here. So I am. Lol

Mm. I new to GP. I thought i added the game to this thread? Does the description of the game not show up at the top for you? Application section is there. You can write it here instead of PM if you want.

You're good in that regard. The actual application button on the game page was a link instead of a button. I may have just not had it load fully. But request sent.

I'm glad to see WoD getting some love, but this is not a game that appeal to me

That's fair, it is pretty specific. Maybe i should've done something more broad and accessible.

Count me in next time for a VTM20 game that is less brutal. I'm still too new to VTM20 to play a shock trooper. :D

To be fair, most Camarilla based games are equally brutal, just in different ways.

Sabbat is more in your face, immediately violent. That type of disruption messes with the Camarilla, bringing unwanted attention and forcing a response to maintain the Masquerade.

The Camarilla is a slow burn type of brutality. It's realizing that nobody vampire you insulted two centuries ago has been manipulating people and events to frame you for something while also taking over your business assets and leaving you with no resources, no influence, and some elders who think you're to blame for their latest misfortune.

EDIT: Not to say the Sabbat doesn't have Elders who have been alive and manipulating events for centuries -- they do. I'm more playing to stereotypes.

Made a slight edit to expand the rolling for Clans thing, as i don't think i explained it properly. Everyone will make a roll that will determine their Clan. At random. We can adjust to remove certain Clans - not everyone wants to play Nosferatu for example - but otherwise it's still luck of the draw. Specifically drawing upon the ritualistic way in which shovelheading was done, in, i believe, one of the older editions, where upon each member of the Pack that's doing the Mass-Embrace would put some of their blood in cup - and that's what's potential shovelheads be gulping down.

I get that people often want to play specific Clans, but i think this sort of system can actually be beneficial, as it forces you to focus on your actual person-character, instead of doing a sort of Clan stereotype word-jumble of labels, if that makes sense.

Ahh, I see. Interesting... it'll be different to have so little control in character creation. Not a complaint, mind, just something new.

Now I'm wondering what the worst possible combinations could be. 😂

No such thing as a "worst combination". Breaking down stereotypes and canonical characteristics is good thing, not bad.

In my recently completed Shovelhead game, I had the players roll for the disciplines they had access to, and from that I gave them the option of being from a clan (if they had at least two of the clan's disciplines) or being a pander. Ended up with a Pander, a Tremere antitribu, a True Brujah, and a Toreador antitribu, and the players really dug that. I equally like your method, which is a bit less random than what we did.

Maybe V20 isn't as bad, but if you're building a human and then getting a random clan there are certainly some bad pairings... at least by earlier editions.

In older editions, Nos flat out failed any rolls based on appearance. If you built a supermodel only to end up a Sewer Rat and thusly failing all the rolls you intended to be good at... I could see that being an unfun experience. (Especially if your ST didn't let you redistribute your stats and you effectively had fewer traits than anyone else.)

Can you still turn a good story? Absolutely. But the question is how invested would the player be. I feel mileage would vary.
