Whulpul. The unthought about back water that breeds only criminals and hack scientists. But in the minds of it's residents, they scrape by with hard work, the occasional discovery and a hope and dream that one day, they will be comfortably rich.

On one side of the ocean Li was paid to help try to figure out the best way to interact peacefully with the tree dwellers in the thick forest. They weren't aggressive, but they also weren't quick to interact at all. Given a week off, Li returned to the THE HUB for some down time.

Veya was on the run again from her good friends in the Undersea Settlement 2C. She had taken on a job in their engineering squad but apparently some her more colourful behaviour was not "professional" enough, so she decided to head back to THE HUB to see if she could land a co pilot job to get her off world finally. She had finally saved up enough to maybe bribe her way on in "borrowed" artefacts.

And after a busy season Bowie Nye had been given a few days off from her canteen at THE HUBs support settlement and she was quickly drawn to the hall of trading. To watch all the different traders come in and barter or deliver.

All three characters find themselves in the same corner in the giant hall of trading. The hall is surrounded by different sized shipping containers. Some of them are there permanently, used as storage both temporary and long term. Some are shop fronts dealing in local produce and trading for off world treasures. Three of the bigger containers serve as the customs office. At this time of day there is a line of 12 different groups waiting to be allowed to trade for the day, or stay for weeks.

In the corner where the three characters sit, are 35 tables sat at by a collection of students, pilots and workers involved in a myriad of activity. Eating, studying, planning, laughing and some sleeping. People come from far and wide like a sports final to watch the carnival of happenings. Others come for work or as their only meal of the day. The hall of traders acts as an off world trading hub and a local gathering point.

The three characters sit and watch and see and think.
OOC:
Please describe your character, add anything to their journey to the hall of trading, and anything they have or are seeing in the hall of trading to world build a little more. Any questions please don't hesitate to use the other threads. And remind - the next post I make will be after everyone posts. And then that post will start the 48 hour clock. YAYAYAY. We begin.

Li eats coconut rice with fried onions peppers and egg on top. It's a nourishing and satisfying meal. He savors it along with the sparkling water that he sips from a refillable metal bottle.

He looks at the other two people at the table. Two women. He decides to not bother them. But maybe say: "Hi. Enjoying the scene? I'm Li."

Li glances a couple tables over at the two very tall and slender people in brightly-colored clothes, whose tentacular limbs and elongated heads suggest they'd be more comfortable underwater than here in the trading hall. They're currently having some kind of silent luminescent conversation, little bubbles of light popping on their faces.

Bowie sits slouched over the table, her long lanky frame uncomfortably folded into a space that should fit her just fine if she wasn't actively trying to make herself smaller. Her locs are pulled back away from her face as if she were working today, and her black-framed glasses sit perched at the end of her nose as she pretends to read the book in front of her.

The trading hall is the one place where she's more interested in what's around her rather than the next page. There's a lot to take in, a lot to possibly glean from overheard conversations and the array of products on display.

Old Junker is one of her favorites, always shilling random odds and ends and still managing to pull in customers for his broken and tarnished goods. Today she's been particularly fascinated by one of the people waiting in line at the customs office. They're dressed like some kind of businessman, all smart and shiny. But their manner is decidedly shady and she's curious how big of a bribe he's planning to pay to get permission to trade here.

She glances quickly at the person at the table when they introduce themselves and wonders if they actually bought their food here or brought it from home, then thinks they may not be from here.

"Bowie," she says, briefly gesturing at herself. "Wouldn't say enjoying, but it is interesting. Buy all of that here?" She nods at the food in front of Li, then makes sure she hasn't lost sight of the shifty businessman.

Veya relaxes, stretching way back in her chair and propping her boots on the table, sipping kelp beer through a straw.

"It's the best!" she exclaims to the table. "Nothing like a port on the go, right? It's always fun here."

She knows she should be keeping a low profile — there’s bound to be someone on her case, asking annoying questions like, "Where did that consignment of Lumi-pearls end up?", "What happened to the OmniScan we ordered?", "Hey, where are the credits you owe?"

But, keeping a low profile was boring. She finishes her drink with a loud slurp.

"Hey, anyone want one?" She holds up the empty bottle. "My treat — just off a job, got some credits, and I'm pretty sure the next one's going to be worth big credits."

"That's how it goes when you're starting to build a rep. Things just start getting better, right?"

She kicks her boots off the table, wobbling it dangerously, and gives her companions a sharp look — suddenly interested.

"That looks good! Which stall did you score that from? Whatcha reading? Must be tricky — you haven't turned the page since you opened it."

The sounds, the sights, the smells of the trading hall continue around them. The tall slender Esherukas are seldom seen outside of their ocean deep kingdom, but these must be the trader emissaries seen in the trading halls every three months. Their visits are always very busy so they can return home as quickly as possible. Their out of water conversations are always visually entertaining for the land dwellers, only two of them have learned to to be interpreters to the outer world.

Old Junker has been a mainstay in the area both as a public secret black market first port of call and also as a passionate negotiator. The three main staff never want to sell at the first mentioned price. They find trading to be more an entertaining game than putting food on the table.

Bowie glances at the shady business man a few more times and sees some oddly shaped packages exchange hands.

Veyas regular look out gives her the nod of all clear - communicating that her attempts and keeping a low profile are somehow working and there is no one in the area that will be asking after her.

And as the traders and travelers and tourists continue to mill around the table, the three continue a conversation.
OOC:
Please feel free to role play a conversation back and forth for a little bit for character development, world building and such. You can include any NPCs around you and I can do dialogue for them. Bu feel free to directly respond to things happening at the table and I will interrupt at some stage.

"My … friend packed it for me," Li answers. He smiles shyly. "Here, would you like some? It's vegan." He picks up a spare wooden spork from the carousel in the middle of the rectangular plank table, and gestures vaguely toward Veya.
Apr 23, 2025 8:59 pm
Bowie looks at both of the people sitting near her, wary but surprised that she doesn't mind the conversation. People don't often speak to her when she goes out, and while there's a twinge of anxiety she doesn't feel overwhelmed.

"No thanks, I'm good." She waves her hand to turn down the offer of food and drink. "I don't eat out much."

She motions to her book. "I've read this before. Besides, when I come here I'm often too distracted to concentrate anyway." Her eyes flick back over to the businessman, intrigued by what he's trading, before returning to her table.

"Are you two local?"
Apr 23, 2025 11:55 pm
Veya gives a nod and a quick wink to her lookout friend. The signal might be hard to notice from someone a way off in the crowd, but it's pretty obvious to everyone at the table.

Cookie was reliable enough. The trade hall was one of his regular haunts, and he'd be able to smell out trouble if anyone could. But Cookie's help didn’t come for free. Somewhere down the line, he’d want a favour in return — and Cookie’s asks were often excessive, even for simple lookout jobs.

"Hey, thanks." On her companion's invitation, she grabbed a spork and shovelled an overly generous helping of the dish straight into her mouth.

"Mmmm... veggies are good. Plus-good with the beer. You're missing out." She continued to speak with her mouth full. "Beats basic protein paste, that's for sure."

"You can bet, after my next paycheck, it’s going to be nothing but high-grade vat-meat for me. For sure, my next job is going to be a high-skill, high-risk, straight-up steely-nerves, iron-guts, ship-jockey gig."

She leans back, swallowing the noodles, contemplating her bright future — and another possible sporkful of her companion’s noodles.

"Am I local? I guess I am now. Been around here long enough. But I'm station-born. Was a teenager before I ever got mud on my boots."

"Still feels weird to be on a planet. In a big bubble of atmosphere held together by hope and gravity. Kind of unnatural, if you know what I mean."

"Veya’s my name — or at least the pronounceable version. Or Vee, if you like"

As she shoveled noodles into her mouth, Veya felt the weight of the letter in her shirt pocket. Maybe these would be the people to get off world with her and finally get a chance to make it big.

Bowie's last glance at the businessman confirmed that his shadiness had grabbed the attention of more of the customs agents than would normally be needed. He had placed the suitcase down on the ground and was looking in his pockets for paperwork maybe.
Apr 24, 2025 11:58 am
Li shoves the thick paper bowl around on the table a moment, trying to think of what to say next. "I'm an offworlder, originally," he volunteers. "This is the most recent place I've tried to retire. Can't keep still I guess. From Lemma Dxit originally. You probably haven't heard of it; another off beat place like this." He glances where Bowie is looking. "Oh. That might be fun to watch."
Apr 25, 2025 1:57 am
"People like that make me nervous," she says under her breath. "Sometimes it's cool but most of the time they're nothing but trouble."

She gives a slight laugh, looking a little sheepish. "Guess it's a good thing I'm not in security. I can pre-judge as much as I want and not hurt anyone."

Giving up the pretense of reading, she slides her book into her bag. "I do like watching people, though. Seeing people come and go sparks the imagination, especially when things are quiet. I've lived here my whole life, only been on a ship a handful of times."
Apr 26, 2025 4:12 am
Whatever the business man had been hoping, was not going to plan. After more customs agents were alerted and the papers he was looking for were not presented, some yelling had begun. "Look, I just need to get off world. I had my papers but someone must have stolen them. You need to find the thief. Why am I being treated like I am guilty? I haven't done anything." AS he yelled he began gesturing wildly. Pointing, holding his arms out like he was appealing to some crowd, scratching his neck a little. And then suddenly he ran for the gates.

Without realising, during the dramatic scene unfolding a non-descript man with dark goggles had walked up to the group and nodded. "Veya, you got the letter. Is this your crew? Maybe we should get going whilst the the gates are dealing with that"
He points to the businessman who was now swinging his fists at one of the agents as if he never been in a fight.

The dark goggle man motioned for them all to follow.
Apr 26, 2025 11:58 am
Li stands up, still holding his paper bowl and spork. "well, Vera, do you know this guy?"
Apr 26, 2025 12:10 pm
"Yeah, yeah, we're all good," Veya said to the man in the goggles, swallowing the last of the brew and noodles. "And, yes these guys are totally my crew."

She turns her back to the man and makes a desperate plea with her eyes to to Play along!

"Like family! This is Li and Bowie. Solid, Two of the best. They're coming"

She turns back to face him. "Lead the way! So you're from Dec? Do we have to worry about trouble getting to him?"

Dec was her cousin, the author of the mysterious letter.
Apr 26, 2025 12:42 pm
Li thoughtfully sporks a last mouthful of rice and onion. "Nice to meet you Mr. Goggles," he says solemnly while chewing. He moves toward the rubbish receptacle and drops in the bowl. This puts him on the other side of Goggles from Veya and Bowie. He gulps down his mouthful. "Lead on," he says to either Veya or Goggles.
Apr 27, 2025 12:20 am
Looking back and forth between Veya and Li, Bowie thinks about the cramped box she shares with two roommates, the job she'd practically sold her soul to get that breaks her down every day, the few belongings she'd worked hard for but isn't sure were enough to keep her tied to this place. She didn't really have any roots beyond the years of a life, and most of those she spent wanting to be somewhere else, anywhere else but here. But was this crazy?

She unconsciously touched the side of the bag, all her books secure inside the datapad she'd just put away. Was that really all she needed?

Bowie takes a deep breath, grips the edge of the table a little too hard as she stands. "Yeah, let's go."
Apr 27, 2025 10:14 am
Mr Goggles nodded, looked around to understand more of the situation and motioned to follow. The suitcase man was now on the ground being held by multiple agents, a nearby agent seemed to be having a heart attack nearby and smoke was coming off their uniform. Mr Goggles quickly walked in a wide circle around the pile on, slipped through one of the unmanned side gates a broke into a light jog until they were around a corner and into one of the giant hangers.

To the left and right sit 16 large and small ships of different shapes and clearly different purpose. Some giant mining ships for shuttling back and forth between different asteroids. Some people ships, - the cruise liner of the sky and the transport between worlds. And then further down the line the traders and the fighter ships. Turning to them and slowing them all up to a stand Mr Goggles sees that some of the party have never been here before.

Quite a sight isn't it? We should be fine with the guards from now so we can walk the rest of the way. Veya filled you all in? Ready for a very questionable adventure?
Apr 27, 2025 11:14 am
"Semper paratus" Li answers.
Apr 29, 2025 12:08 am
The circumstances and the speed of their movement makes Bowie question how legit all of this is but once they slow their pace she can't help but study the ships around them. She'd been able to get her hands on some old engines and parts over the years and enjoyed tinkering with them. But the idea of seeing one in action, fully installed and powering one of these vehicles is exciting enough she dismisses some of her concerns.

"Which one is yours?" she asks Veya as her eyes pan across the nearby ships.
Apr 29, 2025 11:23 am
"Yep, everyone's up for anything," Veya says a little to quickly, "And I'll get them all up to speed as soon as I know a little more myself."

"Not my ship" She says in answer to Bowie's question, "but we're looking for the one in 14B."

A little family job. I'm sure we'll get the details there."
