Sif looks over the map too, doing her best to memorize the best routes just in case. "Melannor made it seem like… well, he made it seem like there’d be… hands on help." She hastily adds, "Not that I don’t appreciate sound advice."

OOC:
@GeneralET Please introduce your character now. You're seated in this same room, cross-legged on a thick rug and surrounded by open books, reading a thick volume titled The Tangled Lattices of Limbo and the Ethereal Web.

Elestar was so focused on his book that he barely noticed people entering the room where he sat.
Of course, when the silence broke he could not help but listen.

His long dark hair were in stark contrast with his pale skin. It could not be helped spending all that time inside studying books.
Once he heard the words 'mage door' and 'portal' his interest for the book was lost. Perhaps it was time to leave the safety of the studies and experiment those phenomena in person. This would ultimately be the only way to better understand how time, space and planes interacted together.

"Excuse me" he says getting up. " I am myself a scholar versed in history and extraplanar theory. I could not help but hear your current expedition might bring you to places of high interest for me. If you allow it, I would love to accompany you on your endeavour."

Now facing the group he realized he did not even introduced himself properly yet.
"I am called Elestar"

Cormac hadn't noticed the other figure nestled in among the books until they spoke.

"Elestar," he repeated simply. "I'm Cormac."

"If you have some knowledge in these matters, and you want to join, you're welcome too, if you can contribute."

"It's not for me to judge, but just so we're clear, we're expecting to fight not to sightsee."

Not offended by the remark Elestar simply replies.
"Nice to meet you Cormac. I can handle myself in though if that is what you are worried about. I do not expect it to be an easy walk. That is one reason I do not go there by myself. After all a sage once said :Its dangerous to go alone."

Theryssa watched the exchange with a calm, unreadable expression. After Elestar's introduction, she turned to one of the nearby cabinets, unlocking it with a whispered word and a flick of her wrist. Inside were tightly rolled scrolls tied with colored ribbons, each glowing faintly with arcane energy. Turning her pale gaze to the group, she asked evenly:

"If I were to offer you three minor scrolls — of your choosing — what would best serve your strengths? Something to empower your allies? Strike down your foes? Or hinder them with arcane interference? One of each?"

Sif watches and listens intently to Cormac and Elestar’s conversation. At Theryssa’s question about scrolls Sif’s face pinks a little. "I’m not versed in scrolls… how do they work exactly."

Theryssa turned her gaze toward Sif.

"A fair question," she said. "Magic scrolls are not like potions or enchanted items. They are distilled intent — spells written in the language of creation, woven into parchment with rare inks, rare materials, and rarer still, precision."

She picked up the scroll of Scorching Ray and held it between them.

"To use a scroll, you must understand not just the words, but the rhythm of them — the cadence, the breath, the subtle turns of the hand as you speak the glyphs aloud. It’s not unlike playing a complex piece of music... except a single mistake means silence. Normally, it takes years to learn how to safely read and activate the power woven into scrolls. Some people never do — the magic refuses them. For those who can, the scroll casts the spell stored within... but in doing so, it burns itself out. The knowledge is consumed. One chance only."
OOC:
In game terms, you need the Spell Reader trait to cast a single-use spell by reading a scroll
She glanced at Elestar. "Your scholarly companion, I suspect, has the training."

Then she looked back to Sif with a more contemplative tone.

"There are scrolls that can resurrect the dead, summon storms of flame, turn a charging warrior into a rabbit mid-step, or bathe a battlefield in radiant healing. Such power is not thrown about lightly — which is why major scrolls are rare, and most are kept under lock and key."

"These that I have here, I should say, are minor scrolls," she clarified. "Not the great spellworks of legend — no fireballs to shatter armies, no resurrection to cheat death. But still... useful tools. Clever magic. And in tight places, cleverness often wins where brute force fails."

She paused, then added.

"Even if you cannot cast them yourself," she said gently to Sif and Cormac, "your insight is still valuable. Choosing the right scroll for the journey ahead is no small thing. You two know how you fight. You know what you and your companions might face. So lend that knowledge here — help Elestar choose wisely. Strategy isn’t only steel and reflex. It’s knowing what to bring into the dark."

Cormac muses for a moment, scratching at the stubble on his chin.

"I don't know much about magic, but we have some healing by way of these potions from the Druid..."

"Maybe something to do damage to a foe that's difficult to hurt by normal means, or maybe something to see stuff that might be hidden to normal eyes."

"I assume that you have has some magic of your own," he says in a nod to Elestar, "So maybe something that you don't normally do so we have something to cover a blind-spot, so to speak"

"My magic as you call it comes from my faith. I am merely a channeler of energy. My faith is tied to the passing of time and as such I am sometimes able to alter its normal flow. It can proves to be useful in many situations although its not all powerful. As for the the scrolls I like your reasonning regarding foes unaffected by normal means. With that in mind, I would pick something that would help us defeat our ennemies, and maybe one that could help us secure a safe exit in case things go sour."

Theryssa listened to both men. When Elestar finished, she gave a single nod.

With a deft movement, she returned to the cabinet, put away the Scorching Ray scroll, and selected three other scrolls, each marked with a rune engraved on its seal. She placed them before the group with a care that suggested they were not things to be treated lightly.

"Melf’s Acid Arrow," she said, indicating the first scroll wrapped in a burnished copper ribbon. "A spell of corrosive force. Ideal for foes that resist blade and flame — or anything that thinks armor makes it untouchable."

She tapped the second, wrapped in earthy green.

"Barkskin. It toughens the flesh like old oak. Not as flashy as a shield of flame, but far more likely to keep someone standing when the blows start to fall."

Then, the last — a pale blue scroll with silver thread sealing it.

"See Invisibility. Creatures from other planes, old spirits, or certain conjured things often shroud themselves. This will reveal what others miss. Use it wisely — there are some things best unseen unless you’re ready."

She stepped back.

"They are not world-breaking spells," she said, "but each one may be the difference between falling into the dark… or walking back out of it. I give them freely. But I trust you’ll put them to use when the moment is right."

"Cormac, Elestar are either of you able to read the scrolls then?" Sif asks still unsure if they will even be useable for the group. She’s not averse to to taking them but if none in the party can use them she doesn’t want to waist them.

"No, not something I ever learned. I can read, a bit, but not the magical stuff."
Jun 11, 2025 6:16 pm
"I have been trained in reading such magical scrolls. As such I will gladly hold on to them until needed." Elestar grabs the scrolls and put them with his belongings.
