Chapter 2: The Trek to Myrefall

Yenna steps back from the table, her composed demeanor returning, though the concern in her eyes remains. "The path ahead is perilous," she says, her voice resonating with quiet authority. "But you carry the light of Ormskirk with you. Go swiftly, go safely, and return to us."

Thorgrim nods gruffly, clapping a heavy hand on the nearest adventurer's shoulder. "Aye. Don't keep the hearthfires waiting too long. There'll be warm stew and cold ale upon your return." He offers a final, determined look to the group. "Make us proud."

As the doors of the longhouse swing open, the party is met not just by the biting wind, but by the faces of their community. Despite the early evening hour and the storm, a crowd of villagers has gathered – fishers, trappers, artisans, families – their expressions a mixture of fear, hope, and grim determination. Lanterns sway in the wind, casting flickering light on anxious faces. Children clutched their parents' legs, peering out at the heroes. There are no cheers, only a heavy, supportive silence, perhaps punctuated by quiet murmurs of "Be safe," or "Gods speed." It is a potent reminder of what they fight for – not just the abstract idea of saving the region, but these specific people, their neighbors, their families.

Leaving the relative warmth and light of Ormskirk behind, the adventurers step into the teeth of the blizzard. The wind howls, driving snow horizontally, stinging exposed skin and reducing visibility to mere feet. Each step is a struggle against the deepening drifts and the icy grip of the cold. The path is treacherous, hidden beneath a blanket of white.

Some ambiance, if you'd like.
OOC:
Because of Johan and Leta's experience in the Wilds, I am not making any of you take Survival checks, though the trek is, to say the least, awful.
Two grueling days pass in a relentless trek through the unforgiving landscape, the storm showing no signs of abatement. What should be a single day's journey stretches agonizingly onward. Just as exhaustion threatens to overwhelm them completely on the evening of the second day, with the faint outline of Myrefall's valley perhaps only an hour's travel ahead, they find a small depression sheltered by a cluster of ancient pines, offering minimal respite from the wind's fury. Working together, shivering but determined, they clear the snow and set up a rudimentary camp. The Winterlight Lantern is lit, held persistently in Nelie's small hands, casting its eerie blue glow and pushing back the oppressive cold in a small, welcome circle of warmth. Huddled together, they eat meager rations, the silence broken only by the roar of the storm outside their small sanctuary and the sounds of people preparing to bed down.
OOC:
Time for some RP again, if you'd all like. Just let me know when you'd like to move on.

Warming herself, "This Winterlight Lantern is real blessing." She seems staff off the worst of the weather. But her and Johan are more used to it.

"Rest well tonight. Tomorrow we will be in Myrefall."

Nelie tugs the cloak tighter. Her little prestidigitation magic, normally used to entertain the children of Ormskirk with simple light shows, is now fully employed to keep her boots and clothing warmed. Against the bitter wind it's not much, but combined with the Winterlight Lantern it almost makes the winter cold bearable.

She nods in agreement with Leta. "Yes, it really is." At the mention of Myrefall though, a shiver runs through her. As glad as she'll be to find a roof over their heads, she knows they're all thinking of what they might find there...

Our half-elven paladin pulls her cloak tightly. She sits by the campfire with the Scout’s Horn still s,ung over her shoulder.

I can take the first watch, she says. I am not particularly sleepy yet. There’s room in my tent, for one, if anyone needs to share the space.

Kethra’s mind quickly wanders once again. She takes a stick into her right hand, and etched three dots into the snow. One, two, three…all in a vertical line. And she stares at them with steely blue eyes.

Johan is glad they found this area to make camp. Any little wind break is a mercy. "Well we will be in Myrefall tomorrow and then the real fun will start. I will take mid watch." He will head to his tent and keep his weapons close.

May 6, 2025 2:35 am
Odin was setting up his tent as the conversation of night watch came up. He gently interjects:

"I suggest we all get some sleep.
My spirit raven, Huginn, can watch over us. He does not sleep and he can instantly alert me if there is any cause for alarm through the night.

I only offer this as a suggestion...if you would rather set up a watch, by all means. I will still offer Huginn's services as a second pair of eyes."

Kish is grateful his heritage offers a bit of protection from the elements but still wishes he had a bit more bulk to his build after forcefully trudging through the deep snow for the last two days. As the others set to making camp Kish tiredly does the same. At Kethra's and Odin's comments he replies.

I think it best we have a watch. Odin, can you raven see in the gloom of night? If so it might be a good idea for it to watch from outside the lantern light. If we are this close to an enemy force I think it best we try to have a guard and preferably ones with darkvision for the middle of the night. Just a suggestion but either way I will take last watch.

The meager warmth of the Winterlight Lantern offers little comfort against the biting chill of the morning. Though the storm still rages, the wind seems to have momentarily lessened its fury, allowing slivers of grey dawn light to pierce the oppressive gloom. The scent of pine and wet earth hangs heavy in the air. The relative quiet feels unnerving after two days of constant howling wind. Ahead, through the swirling snow, the dark line of the Myrefall valley ridge is faintly visible, a reminder that their destination is near, yet still separated by the dangerous wilderness.

For Odin, however, the morning breaks differently. A familiar, urgent mental nudge from his spirit raven, Huginn, cuts through the lingering tendrils of sleep. Danger. Close. Watching! Huginn, perched unseen in the high branches, has detected movement – stealthy shapes slinking through the pines, converging on their camp.

Odin has but a moment to process Huginn's silent alarm before sharp snarls shatter the morning stillness. Bursting from the snow-laden pines surrounding the camp, three shapes launch themselves towards the party. Low, guttural growls echo as grey forms blur against the white landscape – wolves.

These appear to be natural wolves of the Wilds, large and lean from the harsh winter, but something is immediately unsettling. Their grey fur is ragged, and patches of dark, frozen blood stain their muzzles and chests. Their eyes, when they meet the party's gaze, hold no typical animal caution, only a raw, frenzied bloodlust. They move with a coordinated, predatory focus, clearly targeting the adventurers within the small camp, ignoring the usual fear a wolf might show towards a group of armed humanoids.

Congrats, Huginn -- you saved the party from having the Surprised condition!

The last of the blood-crazed wolves falls silent in the snow, its unnatural fury extinguished. A tense quiet descends upon the camp, broken only by the party's ragged breaths and the ever-present howl of the wind. The immediate threat is gone, but the encounter leaves a lingering unease. The wolves' aggression, their bloodstained muzzles... it's another dark omen on this already grim journey. Wasting no time, the party packs their meager camp, the image of Myrefall's valley ridge urging them onward.

As they prepare to leave, they notice a significant change: the relentless blizzard that has plagued them for two days has finally begun to break. The wind, though still bitingly cold, has lost much of its violent fury, and the snowfall has dwindled to a light, swirling flurry. Patches of grey sky are visible overhead, and visibility has improved considerably. Wasting no time, the party packs their meager camp, the now clearer image of Myrefall's valley ridge urging them onward.

An hour of cautious travel through the now thinning snows and over treacherous, icy patches brings them to the crest of the ridge overlooking Myrefall. The wind, while no longer a blizzard, still whips sharply across this exposed height, carrying flurries that sting their faces. But through the clearer air, the sight below steals the breath from their lungs – or perhaps it's the acrid smell of old fires and something else, something sickeningly sweet, that catches in their throats.

This isn't the small, bustling village you might remember or have heard tales of. The outskirts of Myrefall are a scene of utter devastation. Houses stand as blackened, skeletal frames, their timbers scorched and collapsed. Others are simply smashed, roofs caved in, walls rent asunder as if by a giant, furious hand. Debris – shattered wood, broken pottery, scraps of torn fabric – litters the snow-choked ground, tossed about like children's toys. A chilling silence hangs over the ruins, punctuated only by the mournful whistle of the wind through broken structures and the occasional creak of a dangerously leaning wall. There are no signs of life, no smoke from chimneys, no voices – only a profound, deathly stillness.

As the party stands at the edge of this nightmare, the wind carries a new sound - a distant, mournful howl that seems to echo off the valley walls. It's not the sound of wolves they heard earlier, but something deeper, more resonant, and somehow... wrong. The sound sends a chill down their spines that has nothing to do with the cold.

The clearing weather, while welcome, offers little comfort in the face of such devastation.

point of clarification
Quote:
The outskirts of Myrefall are a scene of utter devastation. ...
the buildings that are completely devastated are the communal buildings, longhouse (inn and bar), church, the community storage barn.
Is the entire town destroyed?
Being able to ignore the cold better than his fellows Kish has been pondering the Winterlight Lantern. While taking down the camp he asks the others if any are smoked with crafting. As it might be helpful to fashion a bonnet for the Lantern and suspend it over the party member who needs it's aid the most. This should allow them to benefit while limiting the lights glow in revealing their presence.
As they look over the town Kish shake his head. This, this is bad. This is not mere mindless destructing but a careful eradication of any meant to use this place or is resources to last the winter. I wish we could locate the sending stone. All the villages and outlying settlements need to be warned. These Lesen mean to quote of all who live here. And if they're can eliminate a town this fast they can likely do it again.

Wanting a better grasp of the enemy Kish looks for tracks and signs of damage to determine the types of magic and weapons used.

"Myrefall..." Nelie whispers in shock, her mind as blank as the snow surrounding them. It's hard to gather her thoughts in view of such devastation. An entire village, broken like this...

Johan and Kish's exchange snaps her out of it. She nods in agreement. "The longhouse, yes. And if there are survivors of the attack still around, the longhouse or the church should be a good place to start looking, right?"

The attacker, or survivors though I doubt that, are still about. and he points out some fresh traces, a couple hours old by his estimate, around the village administrative and social centers. We need to find out who else is nearby before proceeding with anything else he states emphatically before continuing.

Honestly though, the thing that concerns me the most is the intelligence behind it. Not only was it and organized surprise attack but from the looks of it the order of events was very strategic. and Kish point out a few key points he noticed
+The night watch was systematically eliminated first, based on the guards bodies placement
+ The warning bell was likely targeted early to prevent the alert from spreading.
+ Many villagers were slain in their beds or mid meal preparation
+ Signs of storage rooms being systematically cleaned out

If they are collecting resources then they are likely moving on to their next target. Taking the towns food allows them to move without the need to gather resources. but where

Johan will take the healer kit .Johan will nod to Kish"Somebody had definitely been here since the attack. They have methodically dismantled and clean out the merchant stalls. Taking all valuable items. There are also signs of them dragging something heavy to the village center. By their boots prints they were searching for something specific. These prints only seem to be a few hours old." Looking around"It seems most of their activity was at the market. I say we head to the long house and check it out."

Odin had been quiet for some time and to any who may have noticed, his gaze would have seemed 'off in the distance', as if staring off into space...yet he still seemed alert and aware of his surroundings. It was only after Kish and Johan had spoken of their observations that Odin seemed to 'return to them'.

In quiet tones he added:

"I have seen beyond sight in this matter. The buildings have not been destroyed at radom but rather they have been systematically demolished in a spiral pattern...it is as if something massive and ancient has methodically worked its way from the outskirts of this village, inward, toward its center.

I offer a warning to us all. In the shadows of the destroyed buildings there is "something". I can not see it clear enough to tell you what it is, but I assure you it is there. It remains in the darkness, seemingly intentionally avoiding my 'sight'. What I 'have' been able to 'see' is disturbing on its own. I have glimpsed large, dark shapes moving in the shadows between the ruins. Their movements suggest wolves, but they are far too large and coordinated to be natural predators.

The trail to the southeast is marked with sporadic signs of struggle as well as periodic blood spatters in the snow...it suggests to me that the villagers were indeed herded off into the wilderness. The trail leads toward an area where the forest grows notably darker and more ancient, away from the more traveled paths between settlements.

Most concerning to me is that there are distinct massive, deep impressions pressed into the snow and earth...as if by colossal, irregular feet. And interspersed with these tracks are long, gouging furrows in the ground. I suspect that, in an attempt to conceal these tracks, their makers have dragged immense, gnarled branches behind them in order to scrape away the snow and topsoil along with their footprints.

I have also seen areas nearby where the ground looks as though something with incredible strength has pushed through dense, frozen undergrowth, leaving behind a trail of splintered wood and disturbed earth unlike any animal spoor I've ever encountered. These tracks seem to be focused around the destroyed buildings.

As a point of full disclosure regarding what my 'far sight' has permitted me to observe, I have seen snow-covered ruins in the area surrounding the village that create an almost maze-like network of partially collapsed structures and debris.

We must proceed with much caution."

Kish edges away from the shadows he had been contemplating slipping into to get out of sight and grumbles about being out in the open and ensures his weapons are free to draw quickly.

How big are these "colossal" prints? You are familiar with animals so how large would you estimate the creature to be?

Nelie looks wide-eyed at the destruction around them. "So... thorough. So deliberate." Whatever this was, it didn't match much at all with what she knew of Leshen. And the giant tracks, knowingly concealed, according to Odin.

"Yes, we really do need to be careful. I'm starting to think we really have no idea of what we're really up against..."
May 16, 2025 9:08 pm
Johan listening"If it leave tracks I can track it. I can follow a trail that has been disguised also. Wiping a trail leaves a trail if you don't know what you are doing. I still think we should scour the long house for the stone though."
May 16, 2025 9:27 pm
I agree it would be helpful but given the thoroughness the enemy has shown in pillaging this place and the fact the enemy was here not to long ago and we may be already surrounded I am a bit reluctant to focus too much on searching. But if others will watch while I search or if any of you have means to help detect the stone then I am all for finding it as quickly as possible.

Kish keeps his voice low and his eyes scanning the surrounding

I had presumed you had all split up a little to do some searching, but always within eyesight or earshot of each other. Right now, in my mindseye, I see that you are nearing the center of the town but not in the center yet. Johann would have been the closest to the center but probably backtracked to sync up with you all.

Psybermagi says:

"Each footprint punches deep into the snow, roughly circular or perhaps irregularly oblong, easily two to three feet in diameter.

In the softer, undisturbed snow, they sink at least a foot to a foot and a half down, compressing the layers beneath.

Where the ground is firmer or the snow shallower near trampled areas, the impressions are still a good six to eight inches deep, with the 'talons' or 'roots' gouging even further into the frozen soil below.

I don't have any reference point in my own personal experience to suggest how big something would need to be to make footprints like these.

It's clear that whatever made these tracks has considerable weight and is pressing down with force."

The party moves carefully through the snow-covered ruins, their footsteps muffled by the fresh powder. They've managed to get surprisingly close to the longhouse, using the cover of fallen timbers to mask their approach. Through the gaps in the broken walls, they can see two figures inside, their attention focused on a glowing stone, which you all immediately identify as a Sending Stone.

The creatures are unlike anything the party has seen before. They stand upright like men, but their bodies are covered in thick, shaggy fur the color of winter shadows. Their limbs are lean and muscular, ending in hands that are more paw than human, with sharp black claws that glint in the dim light. Their heads are distinctly wolf-like, with elongated muzzles and pointed ears that twitch at every sound. Their eyes, a piercing yellow that seems to glow in the darkness, hold an intelligence that speaks of more than mere animal cunning.

The larger of the two holds the stone aloft, its blue veins pulsing with magical light. His other hand rests on the hilt of an elegant longsword at his hip. The blade's pale glow casts strange shadows across his fur-covered face. The crossguard, shaped like crescent moons, catches what little light filters through the gaps in the ruined roof.

The second wolfman reaches up with clawed hands toward the stone. His yellow eyes fix on it with a mix of reverence and hunger. Three wolves, each about the size of a large dog, stand guard nearby. Their breath forms clouds in the frigid air as they pace between the fallen timbers and broken furniture. Suddenly, all three wolves freeze in place. Their ears perk up simultaneously, and their noses twitch as they catch the scent of the party. The still air carries the unmistakable smell of warm bodies and metal. The wolves' heads turn as one, their yellow eyes locking onto the party's position. A low growl rumbles from one wolf's throat, causing the other two to follow its gaze.

The wolfman leader's hand tightens around the stone as he spots the less stealthy members of your group. His lips pull back in a snarl, revealing rows of sharp teeth. He barks a command in their guttural tongue, the sound echoing off the broken walls.

The wolves crouch, their muscles tensing beneath their thick winter coats. The second wolfman draws a crude but deadly-looking axe from his belt. The leader's free hand moves to the hilt of his moon-touched blade. Its pale light grows brighter, as if sensing the coming violence. The ruined longhouse, once a place of community and warmth, is about to become a battlefield.

For those of you sneakin', the wolves highest was a 21 so all of ya'll were spotted. Sorry. D:

If you click the map, it'll open a much larger version without the animation for you to more easily gander at.

The longhouse map is not precisely what you would have seen, but it's the closest I could find. The hearth is not lit, it is cold and forboding inside. There are lots of holes in the walls and the roof where damage was done, fires started and then put out by the weather.
