Getting the Ducks all in a Row

FORNICE/Mora/Spinward Marches. Ground Port 2A servicing the Arcology of Port-au-Prince. 0800, April 8, Imperial year 1115.

(Time to Get Organized!
OOC:
Honestly, things are pretty chaotic for me and clearly for some of the new players as well. Its hard to follow what is going on over several threads. This particular thread should be limited to administrative details like assigning crew quarters, determining a ship's command-hierarchy and job assignments. Please, no trade talk here.

It will help me a lot to have "department heads" who can make decisions and then declare what for sure is being done. For instance, there's been talk of looking for passengers and though it seems relatively certain that you're headed to Jokotre, that has not been formalized with the filing of a jump-plan with the Port Captain. So until that is accomplished no passengers are going to sign up.
Please recall that any given character can only dedicate themselves to a limited number of tasks. I feel like we've gotten way ahead of ourselves! I mean, I'm glad that we're eager to get going, but it would help if we had assignments formalized.

-----
CREW MEETING AGENDA

Assign Quarters.
Decide on Department Heads, (perhaps) elect a Captain?
Assign primary and secondary jobs
Formalize shares or salary/other compensation arrangements.

It is assumed that new characters have done the formalities; signed the ship's log and had their biometrics recorded to assure access to ship and crew areas. Crew will also be recorded by the Port Captain (or their representative) when they inspect and sign off on the log. (There is both a physical and digital log-book!)

more could still be added! work in progress

The winged reptiliode is unreadable except for a slight shimmer/flutter of the wings and a toothy 'smile' perhaps made in imitation of human behavior.

"Greetings! I am Decherrek. Number One best passenger and also student of Imperium Economics and Sophont Behaviours. Very interesting. Former skip-tracer and repossession-agent. Still on contract with First Bank of Fornice, so doing some work for them, too!

"I will help you as I can. Make suggestions. Give advice. Or stay in stateroom if you get sick of me! Much to learn either way.

"So, some unsolicited advice. Merchant Ship usually organized with two main 'sections', Flight and Commerce. Crew have duties in both.

"Flight have Captain, Pilot, Navigator, Engineer, Medic, Purser/head-steward. You not have ship weapons, so no Gunnery Chief.

"Sometimes crew have multiple roles. Captain-Navigator. Medic-Steward. Engineer-bottlewasher.

"Department heads have others, helpers. Chief Engineer have Assistant Engineer, and Engineer Technician (mechanic/electronics/gravitics) maybe.

"Perhaps same sort of arrangement for Commerce. Captain. Purser(passengers). Broker(speculative trade). Etcetera.

"Your ship, your organizations. How you want. But no organization? Chaos! Not good for business. In my experience..."

OOC:

Based upon original crew assignments and the new characters how does this sound for chains of command and some of the roles. I'm a little more vague on the last few but given the known skills of the new characters here is a starting suggestion:

Flight Crew:
- (Head) Pilot: Tharrok (T-Jive)
- Navigator/Legal Counsel: LC Rains
- Assistant Crew: Leilani

Engineering:
- (Head) Chief Engineer: Llogan Tamm
- Assistant Engineer: Bronz Bautista
- Mechanic: Rin

Others:
- Medical Officer / Steward: Said Ma
- Broker: Alice
- Broker / Steward: Lu Yam

Comments?

OOC:

Hopefully, this is similar to previous arrangements (if not adjust accordingly).

Suggested Staterooms:

- (4A): Tharrok (T-Jive)
- (4B): LC Rains
- (4 Shared): Leilani
- (4 Shared): Alice
- (4C): Said Ma

- (4F): Llogan Tamm
- (4E): Bronz Bautista
- (4D): Rin

- (2F): Lu Yam
- (2E): Decherrek

CREW MEETING AGENDA

Assign Quarters. DaB's assignments look good to me.

Decide on Department Heads, (perhaps) elect a Captain? I prefer the original crew be the Department Heads. Tamm would be Head of Engineering (Chief Engineer), Bronz 2nd Engineer & Ring 3rd Engineer/Maintenance Tech. Elect a Captain? Tamm will nominate LC. Do I have a second?

Assign primary and secondary jobs Tamm 1⁰ Engineering, 2⁰ Maintenance

Formalize shares or salary/other compensation arrangements.
How much per share again, cr62,000? I'd like everyone to receive a salary then buy shares as possible.

Of course, these ideas are (Strong) suggestions. We should talk about these ideas yet I'd like to come to a consensus by Saturday 10 May.

Feel free to start. 😊

I don't see Bronz as the organizing type nor used to setting up any sort of command but he will chime in if someone else starts the discussion.

After listening to Decherrek and Bronz, LC says;
"I think Decherrek suggestion has merit Bronz, may we have the crew broken into two sections for the two functions of our ship. I think it is a good idea of the Flight and Commerce Divisions. I think the engineering sections falls into the Flight Division as its function supports flight ops. The Commerce Division has responsibility for cargo and passengers. Right?"

LC looks around for a moment and then adds;
"It might be best if we select a Captain first...." he grins at Bronz.....

Bronz glances around at the others. He’s not entirely sure it’s the best call—but looking at the faces around him, he doesn’t see anyone else stepping up.

"Yeah," he says with a nod. "I’ll second LC for captain."

Mama puts in her 2 creds worth, "I will support LC as ships captain. I would offer my services as chief medical office and second in command."
May 8, 2025 1:45 pm
Tamm looks over at Dr. Ma when she offers to serve as second in command. He nods his head but it's hard to tell if his nod means he approves of the Doctor as Number 1 or if he's simply acknowledging the Doctor's offer.

"Tamm like idea of two divisions as a formality. Crew help each other as needed like we did before."
OOC:
The New Players should speak up about what role(s) they'd like to take. I suppose we should elect a Captain first so new players, please think about your character's roles.

LC's reaction to being nominated (or elected) as captain of the Athelstone. It's written in LC’s signature voice—wry, diplomatic, just a little dramatic, and full of reluctant charm.

LC Rains leans back slowly in his chair, a datapad still in one hand—paused mid-scroll as the weight of the crew’s words sinks in. He glances around the common room of the Athelstone, eyes flicking from Said Ma’s calm gaze to Bronz’s quiet nod, from Tamm’s stoic posture to Tharrok’s attentive ears.

"So... Captain, is it?" he says, his voice somewhere between amusement and disbelief.

"Now, don’t get me wrong—flattered, truly. Deeply. Moved, even." He taps the datapad against his palm thoughtfully. "But I just want to make sure we all understand what’s happening here. You’re asking me—former law clerk, starport customs liaison, short term prisoner of the Driantia Zhdantia (Zhodani Consulate), Navigator and one-time insurance fraud investigator—to sit in the big chair and wear the big title."

He sets the pad down gently, eyes sweeping across the table.

"Let me be clear: I’m not the best pilot on this ship. I don’t know how to recalibrate a fusion manifold or reroute life support through a gravitic bypass. If the hull breaches, I’m as likely to quote subsector liability clauses as I am to grab a patch kit."

A beat. Then a grin.

"But I do know how to keep the banks off our backs, how to make smugglers smile and inspectors look the other way. I can sell ice to a belt miner, turn a paper trail into a profit margin, and talk our way out of a hostile boarding party with nothing but a commlink and a contract."

He stands now, smoothing the front of his jacket—a subtle, deliberate motion.

"If that’s the sort of Captain this crew wants… if you’re all quite sure you want to hand me the metaphorical keys to the bridge—then I’ll accept."

"But I don’t lead alone. This ship flies because each of you is bloody brilliant at what you do. You want me to steer the paperwork and handle the heat—fine. But the Athelstone is ours. Equal shares. Equal stakes. We rise, we burn, or we coast—together."

He reaches for his tea, gives a mock salute with the mug.

"Now, someone remind me—does this mean I have to start wearing a hat?"

Prison time, huh. Bronz had figured as much about LC—not that he had much room to judge. His own record was clean, but only because he’d never been caught. He’d told himself he was done with that life… though lately, he was starting to wonder if it ever really lets go.

Still, everything they were doing now was above-board. He hoped it stayed that way.

At LC’s comment about the captain’s hat, Bronz let a faint smirk slip through. "Not unless you want to start sweeping Lu-Yam’s broadsword."

He noticed the new crew keeping quiet. He remembered that feeling—not long ago, he’d been the new one too. He wasn’t big on small talk, but maybe a little direction wouldn’t hurt.

He turned to Rin. "Looks like you’re with me in engineering. Tamm’s not too bad to work under."

To Leilani: "You’re flight crew, right?"

Then to Alice and Lu-Yam: "Guess that puts you two in commercial?"

He paused, giving them space. "I’m just a deckhand. Maybe you’ve got better ideas on where you fit."
May 8, 2025 11:54 pm
Bronz said, "Looks like you’re with me in engineering. Tamm’s not too bad to work under."

Tamm speaks up, We all take our turns. Three standard eight hour shifts is a standard day.

His tone is ambiguous and his example is very obvious. What is Tamm trying to say?
May 9, 2025 12:24 am
"Yes, Bronz", Alice responds glancing at Lu-Yam and smiling, "I guess it does, and I for one am happy in that role"

OOC:
Ah, Llogan and Alice got their first as I was writing this!
The Captain does not neccessarily pilot the ship. The Captain makes decisions, the helmsman pilots. Of course, one person can do both jobs. But it is actually a bit unusual to have a Captain-pilot.

The bridge has four stations. Typically Helmsman (pilot), Navigator, Captain (commander) and often gunnery chief. Sometimes an Engineer in the 4th seat. Quick and direct communications between crew are important.

You might organize as "watches" since you have plentiful crew. Two 12-hour shifts or even three 8-hour.

(Decherrek used to sit at one of the bridge stations but he won't do that anymore unless invited!)

The shares are all equal at this point with all the old players put in the profit to pay for their Cr62K and the new players based on your GM most gracious award that all the new members had Cr62K in the bank accounts that allowed them to 'buy' a share.....unless I am missing something?

When Bronz expression changes when LC mentions his time as a non-paying resident Guest of the Consolidate, he grimaces just for a second for a sec...

LC looks at Decherrek and says "You (pointing at Decherrek) Mister high passage paying customer! You gets dibs on your stateroom, but be quick!"
LC hesitates and then quickly adds
"But out of the airlock with you if we catch you running any unauthorize programs through any ship's terminal."

Looking at everyone else,
"So is it official?, last chance?"

"Okay then, I will get the paperwork to the bank with Decherrek and get this official!"
