Safe Play - Lines and Veils, X-Card, Script Change

Please, everybody should subscribe to this thread to get notifications even while dealing with other things (see: Email Notifications).

Before play, if there are any things you do not want to see in the game, make that clear here. You don't need to explain why, we will all respect your boundaries.

Mention is these are things that just don't happen, or if they are 'things only the bad guys do'.

Let's keep this thread as a tidy list. Discussions about things (before or after adding them to this list) can go elsewhere, including in Private Message to the GM if needed.
During play, if anything unforeseen comes up and makes you feel unsafe or unhappy (maybe we forgot one of the things vetoed before, maybe recent trauma has left a raw spot, maybe you just never thought this would come up), speak up immediately and we will adjust what is happening to remove the discomfort. This is often called the X-Card, (or Script Change, which is a slightly more complicated and defined version thereof) you can read the details on those links, but basically it boils down to:

If unwelcome topics come up, tap the card, hold up your hands in and X or post "X-Card" to this thread and the thread where the offending material occurred ---as appropriate to the medium you are playing in--- and everyone involved in the scene will stop.

In Play by Post the game may have moved quite far before you read the problem material. If the situation is concluded, think about if you need to have it removed or if it is OK to just not go there again, include that fact in your objection. Either way, that scene will not continue till the problem is resolved.

Again, you don't have to explain why the subject is a problem, but I may ask you to clarify.

For instance:
Quote:
GM: "Spiders crawl out from under your skin..."

Player: "Um... X-Card."

GM: "Sorry, forget that. That did not happen.
But to be clear: Is it all 'spiders' that are a problem? Or just that they were doing there? And is it, maybe, only when it is your skin?"
That way we can avoid the actual problem.

Sometimes you don't mind a thing happening, but just don't want to hear the details. Use the same mechanisms above, but ask that it be done 'off-screen', 'behind a veil', or just 'fade to black'.

Wheaton's Law always applies and makes all this work.
• Don't be a dick.
• Respect your fellow players.
• Be a Fan of the players' Characters.

These don't always need to be about 'safety' as such.

I'm adding a hard line:

No time shenanigans. Time travel or time manipulation breaks stories, it is impossible to make sense of consequences when such things are on the table. No 'alternate dimensions' either, though there may be things that appear like them.

Force Powers like Precognition are fine, but they are fallible and should be about what is about to happen. Maybe they only affect you current actions, providing guidance and an explanation for why you happen to do the right thing.

A common hard line that people lay down is 'no violence against children'. I think we may need to forego that one, for this game. Though, 'children' is relative to us, and we are talking about only the bad guys doing it, and (mostly) off-screen.

I don't think this will be R-Rated. Probably in line with Star Wars movies.
We are teenagers, though, so there may be some 'romance' but it will fade to black when needed.

I’d like to add a line: no player vs player conflict. It can get really messy, especially in a game like this without strict rules to fall back on. I think it’s best if we focus on cooperation between characters. Thanks!

OK! Here's what we have so far:
Lines: No time shenanigans, no PvP.
Veils: Harm to children (exception for our protagonists, obviously) and romance fading to black as needed.

I'd like to add the following
New lines: no transphobia or homophobia.
New veils: Racism and sexism, sexual assault.

New veils: Racism
In starwars with a million rases there will be prejudice, for some more than others. Thieving javas
And the Empire is know for being very pro-human and human like, and oppressing non-human-like, like the wookies.
Is this what you mean my racism? Or is it within a species like pink humans vs black humans or green Twi'lek vs red ones?

Star Wars has so many different species I don't think we can call what we see as 'racist' (ignoring the accuracy of the term). Jawas are thieves, Wookies do pull your arms off... right?

Different species have different values. Prejudging them based on that is natural, though it may, of course, be wrong at times.

If red Twi'lek clans don't like green Twi'lek clans, who are we to say they are wrong? It is a veil, though, not a line, so it may happen, but we won't see it on-screen much.

This whole topic can get a bit icky. Everyone objectifying anyone because they conform to the 'the epitome of female beauty' even if they are completely the wrong shape... Maybe we just ignore that?

As a general rule, unless the facts of the story explicitly say otherwise, all my characters (PCs and NPCs) can be considered, as bisexual, pansexual, or whatever else is called for to make them viable for your character to 'have a chance with them', if you want to flirt or seduce, you can give it a go. If 'breading' is not an option, it can work however it works.

Nah I meant real-world racism.

Drgwen says:
... Nah I meant real-world racism.
Meaning? From the players to real peoples in our world? Absolutely.

Let's probably also not talk about real world politics and religion. That sort of thing has no place in a Star Wars game.

Agreed. I know it's obvious but I don't think it hurts to mention in this context.
