Personally, I don't want to get too far away from Current Time; if we do decide on a futuristic setting, I don't want it to be too advanced. In terms of Alternity (the game system we're using), we're currently Progress Level 5 (The Information Age); I don't want us to be much beyond early Progress Level 6 (The Fusion Age) because I don't want the game to be about gadgets.
Same goes for fantasy: any elements like this I prefer to structure like a "Hidden History" campaign, one where relatively only a few people are aware of how real magic is and how to use it.
