Still smiling after his little victory against Dungsweeper’s bararism Legolas silently follows Zyra.

Master Ironsunder, Zyra and Legolas at your service. Branric told us of the trouble at the forge and we thought we might be able to assist.

Zyra motions to two of empty seats, requesting that we may join him at the table. Once seated, she unrolls the parchment. Not a lot of details, what else can you tell us of the job?
OOC:
If someone comes by, Zyra will pay for a round.

Grusk gave a slow nod of acknowledgement as Zyra introduced herself and Legolas. With a weary gesture, he waved them to the seats opposite him. The half-orc’s thick fingers curled around his tankard as he took a long sip, then set it down with a quiet thud.

As Zyra unrolled the parchment, he leaned forward, one scarred hand resting on the edge of the paper. His eyes scanned it briefly, but he didn’t linger — he knew its contents too well.

"It’s not much of a job description," he admitted, voice low and gravelly. "Branric means well, but parchment doesn’t do the danger justice."

He straightened, cracking his neck with a wince before continuing.

"I came into possession of an old forge down in the Trades Ward. Not just any place — this one belonged to a dwarven artisan named Barundal Hornrock. Vanished decades ago without a trace. The place sat sealed and quiet all this time, accumulating unpaid city taxes and guild fees until I managed to get the deed through a broker. Figured I’d landed myself a dream — old dwarven stonework, reinforced walls, deep forge channeling heat from the bedrock."

He shook his head. "It wasn’t empty."

He traced a rough outline on the blueprint with one calloused finger.

"Three levels: ground floor — storefront, small work area, street-facing. First floor above — bedroom, study, some personal space. But the real treasure, and the real problem, lies below. Hidden basement forge. Massive. Reinforced. Found it by accident after moving in."

His tone darkened.

"Didn’t even get to light the forge before things started going wrong. Magical traps all through the place. Glyphs. Pressure wards. One room nearly flung me into a wall of iron spikes — which I didn’t know I owned. And then there’s the alchemical gear. Still bubbling. Still. After all these years. I don’t know what half of it does, but it’s unstable. Couple cracked vials, and I lost most of my eyebrows."

He paused, jaw tight.

"And then there’s... the clicking thing."

He didn’t look at them as he said it, instead staring into his ale like it might give him courage.

"It’s in the lower forge. Never saw it fully. It stayed just out of sight, shadows and sound. Metallic clicks, regular like a metronome. Not shambling like a zombie or skittering like a rat. Precise. Deliberate. I tossed a hammer at it — didn’t even scratch whatever it was. The thing moved like it knew the room better than I did. Fast, too. I didn’t wait to see more."

He finally looked up, gaze steady now.

"I need that forge cleared. I need to know what’s in there, and I need it safe. I’m offering coin, of course, but if you help me reclaim it, I’ll offer work too. Favor from a blacksmith goes a long way, especially one with access to old dwarven methods."

Grusk leaned back, the faintest hint of pride creeping into his tone.

"Barundal didn’t just forge horseshoes. He made gear for warriors — maybe even kings. If half his equipment still works, we’re standing on a treasure vault built for smithing."

Then, bluntly:

"So. You in?"

OOC:
I am assuming Grusk is a master smith if he claims to be able to work with dwarven smiths equipment as he describes it.
Master Ironsunder, will you outfit the expedition? We need some supplies: lanterns, spikes to disable the traps, might even need to hire an alchemical apprentice to dispose or identify the gear.
OOC:
If he says yes, then I'll follow up with the question below. And if he says no, then I'll ask for an advance or a reimbursement of any expenses we incur to do the job. Then proceed with the question below.
Assuming we can figure out your clicker... Is it possible it's the old smiths mechanical construct, you know like a wizards gollum doing the menial tasks? Do you know about constructs, how they work, how they activate, are they switched or voice activated?
OOC:
Zyra is leaning into her Trap Master trait and imagining how a construct might work. Although not equivalent in nature, there would be similarities just much more complex.

Legolas will is not going to interrupt the conversation and will wait until Zyra asked all of hers
OOC:
He does have questions, for example
Legolas seems calm, but his brain is actually super occupied processing the situation:
what does he mean by "I’ll offer work too"? I hope it's not a work in the smith.
When a blacksmith mentions "Favor from a blacksmith" it does sound like boasting at best. Maybe he is trying to negotiate less direct rewards ? Is he broke?

"Outfit an expedition? I am sorry, I’ve got just some basics. Two pack of torches, flint, a couple of pitons — dwarven make, sturdy enough to jam a pressure plate. And ten gold pieces, in advance."

He pushed the pouch toward Zyra with a heavy hand. "It’s what I can spare now. I’ll reimburse for anything else you use once the forge is cleared."

His expression hardened slightly, and the ale mug in his hand creaked faintly beneath his grip.

"The last man Branric sent — a bold fellow, full of talk — took fifty gold in advance. Walked out armed to the teeth. Blades, light armor, even a scroll he said would ‘counter a guardian.’"

Grusk’s voice dropped lower.

"I found him just outside the main entrance. Dead. No blood left. Just dead, for days. All he had left on him were his clothes. The rest — his gear, his gold — gone."

He gave Zyra and Legolas a long, grim look.

"So maybe his body was looted by whatever’s down there… or maybe it’s still in the forge. Either way, his coin and kit are probably still inside, if you can find them."

"Sorry, I have no idea about anything related to golems or constructs."

Legolas rise hand before speaking:
I'm not like The last man Branric sent. Zyra - i would feel better if you don't take advance yet, not even a python. We go in. We scout. Return to the table to make commitments and plans.

Legolas lower his hand demonstrating his interruption is over and communication is back to Zyra.

Fair enough Legolas. Master Ironsunder, is the smithy locked?
OOC:
If Grusk offers a key for the smithy front door, I'll take it otherwise, I'll just trust my skills with the locks. Eitherway, Zyra will get up and make for the door.

"Here, take the keys. This one is for the front door, this one is for the basement trapdoor"
OOC:
Legolas, should we go? Anything else before we skip to the entrance of the underground level?

No blood left, you said. How do you mean that? Did someone drink all his blood?

Legolas only want to know if there were any clue on death reason.
OOC:
that would be all before skip

"Drank, drained… I don’t know how to put it," he said, his voice low, rough. "But it was gone. Not a drop left in him."

He tapped two fingers against the side of his neck, then his inner forearm.

"Puncture wounds. Here. And here. Like something fed on him — or needed something from him. I don’t pretend to understand the magic behind it, but he wasn’t torn up. Wasn’t burned. Just… empty."

Zyra gave a silent nod. She stood, fastened her cloak, and glanced at Legolas. He was already rising, his hand brushing the curve of his bow, eyes unreadable as ever.

Without another word, the two left the warmth of the Yawning Portal behind.

The walk to the Trade Ward was quick. The forge sat near a corner, wedged between a fletcher’s shop and a boarded-up tanner’s. Its façade was old, dwarven-cut stone weathered by time, with a heavy iron sign bearing the faded emblem of Barundal Hornrock — an anvil flanked by crossed hammers.

Zyra approached the thick wooden door and slipped the brass key from her belt pouch turning it with a slow, metallic click.

The door groaned open, revealing a cool, still interior lit only by the dust-softened light seeping in through narrow windows. The shop was intact — counters along the sides, racks for weapons and tools (now mostly empty), and a large central workspace where a secondary anvil sat half-covered by a leather tarp. There was a faint scent of soot, copper, and something older — something sharp and metallic.

At the back of the shop, partially obscured by a workbench and the faded shadow of a dwarven tapestry, they spotted it: a square outline in the stone floor, just visible in the slanted light. A trapdoor, iron-bound and old, with a thick, inset ring for a handle and a lock.

Legolas puts his arm on Zyra's shoulder and asks to Wait. He tries to look for any footprints in the dust
OOC:
Assuming there must be dust all over the room.

Legolas lights his torch and knees to look at the floor of this room. Seeking a track the previous explorer left or any other tracks left by other creatures. If the dead body where "just outside the main entrance" he guess either someone of something dragged the body there or the poor victim were trying to escape jut before death.
In either case, wood elf considers the dust on the floor will tell me the story unless someone smart enough put an effort to hide it, which is again an information.
May 20, 2025 8:08 pm
Legolas knelt silently, torchlight casting long, flickering shadows across the room. The fine layer of dust on the stone floor told its tale with quiet honesty. He brushed a hand gently over the surface, eyes narrowing.

There — a set of footprints, booted and heavy, moved from the entrance to the corner where a faint outline of a trapdoor could be seen beneath a smudged rug. They went in… and came back out. In a hurry, judging by the depth of the heel marks on the return path. Grusk’s, most likely.

Aside from those solitary steps, the dust lay undisturbed. No drag marks. No claw prints. No hurried scuffs or other tracks of struggle or pursuit.

The forge had been abandoned… and undisturbed. Whatever happened, it happened below.

In the quiet, only one sound broke the stillness: from below the stone floor, deep in the forge’s belly, came the softest, most distant click.

Click. Click.

Then silence.
OOC:
What do you do?

Clear. Legolas stands up and suggest Zyra to enter and investigate. He keeps close to doors and considers
Unlock trapdoors, tie a rope and open them from distance for safety. Or do you dare to open them by hand?
May 21, 2025 4:27 pm
Well, we have the key for the trap door... you want to position yourself so you can target the opening and I'll use the door as a shield

Zyra, leas down, waits for Legolas to get in position, inserts the key and unlocks the trap door lifting it with caution and giving Legolas a clear line of sight to the opening.
May 22, 2025 1:01 am
Zyra slipped the iron key into the concealed lock and turned it with a soft click. She paused — listening — then slowly lifted the trapdoor, using its weight as a makeshift shield. The hinges creaked, old but oiled, revealing a flight of stone stairs descending into utter blackness.

The torchlight licked down the passage, illuminating the first few steps. Beyond them, only shadow remained.
OOC:
Zyra, are you going to light your torch as well or are you moving in the dim light from Legolas torch?

Legolas, what do you do?
May 22, 2025 1:26 am
OOC:
I'll light my torch and lead the way. htech, how do you want to handle checking for traps? Can we do something like a passive perception w/advantage? As opposed to saying check for traps every 10 feet. Obviously we have been warned that there are traps to find and I have the trap master trait, so Zyra is definately on high alert. Just don't want to get the story bogged down with constant checks... what do you think?

can we retrospectively say Legolas gave his torch to Zyra to free his both hands to hold a bow
