Gareth looks at the closest box, to see if any inscriptions on it might shed some light on its contents, or on its provenance.

As the party moves towards the figure on the beach, it moves away, with a shuffling, shambling gait. It seems unused to walking on land. At the water's edge, the figure doesn't hesitate for a second before wading into the ocean. Just as the figure gets knee-deep into the water, the light from the lighthouse flashes around, illuminating the scene properly.

You see that the figure is a naked fish-like humanoid, with bulging eyes, clawed hands, and scaly green-black skin. The creature is carrying a strange stone idol under its arm, which depicts some kind of weird deep-sea fish, looks like a mix between a gulper eel and an angler fish. As you watch, the creature quickly gets waist-deep, then chest-deep into the crashing surf, before disappearing under the water entirely.

Looking at the boxes on the beach, they appear to be fairly mundane shipping crates. You could break them open if you wanted to look inside.

What do you want to do from here?

The Shepherd gasps in confusion, looks at the others on the beach. He grabs his cousin by the arms.
"What the heck was that? Did ya see that? Am I drunk? Ya seen it too, Argus? Like a fish... But walkin'? Am I going crazy? Tell me ya seen it!"
Jun 10, 2025 8:31 pm
"I saw it Gareth, I saw it but I don't believe what I saw," Argus stares after the creature. "Do youse think we've gone mad? Seeing visions? Maybe it was just the way the light shone on it?"

Argus tries very hard to disbelieve what he just saw, because to believe it would undo his safe world.
Jun 11, 2025 10:21 pm
Effie saw it too, but she was no more sure of just what she saw than the others.

"What th’fuck?!" she swears. "I seens it too! A fish-headed man! Gots to be some sorts of helmet, don’t it?!"

Paying no mind to the crates on the beach, the woman, with a white-knuckled grip on her gaff, heads for the surf, and the ship. "There mights still be others aboard! Comes on, bring the light!"
OOC:
Headed for the wreck.

This was not stuff of legend and Sterlings face showed it, pale as his skin was it seemed to find another lighter tone. "Aaah? That. It. Thing. Just walked out into the surf. Must have been a helmet like Effie said, the ones in the boat will explain it." The confusion fading as he explained what he just saw out loud, hands tightening on the rope as he trots after Effie and her spear.
Jun 12, 2025 7:00 pm
Argus pulls at Gareth's arm.

"Come along cousin, let's get into the ship and see if others need saving. Let's..." he waves vaguely at the seashore and the crashing surf. "Let's leave that till we find a shiphand to speak with. To explain it. Come along now."

He gently pulls Gareth along with him after Effie, and towards the ship his lanthern held high to light their way.
Jun 12, 2025 7:02 pm
Gareth follows, but keeps glancing nervously at the spot where the fish-thing submerged.

As they come closer, he tries to focus on the shipwreck, and on spotting survivors.

You go to the wrecked ship, looking in through the big hole in the side. There's another big hole smashed on the opposite side of the ship, where water is quickly flooding in from. The ship's hold is quickly becoming filled with brackish seawater. There's quite a few more cargo boxes inside here, that are getting thrown around by the movement of the ship as it's battered by the sea waves. You don't see any bodies, but it looks like a fight of some kind took place inside the cargo hold, there are big scratches on the walls that could have been made with sharp daggers, quite a few of the cargo boxes are broken open, there's splatters of relatively-fresh blood on the interior surfaces, and it generally looks like a scene of carnage. You don't think it would be safe to enter the ship and search further, given how quickly the interior is filling with water.

Looking around further on the beach, you find some tracks leading off further down the beach, running parallel to the cliff face. The tracks look like two people wearing shoes, carrying something heavy between them.

What do you want to do?
Jun 14, 2025 8:59 am
Calling out a few times inside the wreck, Effie frowns at the blood and eventually gives up and retreats back to the beach, where some of her fellows have discovered the tracks.

"What's this?" the woman half-shouts over the wind, rain, and surf. "Survivors wandered off, dids they?!"
OOC:
I'm up for tracking the trail if others are.
Jun 14, 2025 9:24 am
The spectacle horrifies the simple Shepherd.

"What in God's name happened here... Just a mo, woman... Shine that lantern on them boxes..."
He looks at the open boxes in the flooded hull, looking for remains or clues to what they once contained.
Jun 14, 2025 12:24 pm
Sterling also curious about what was so important in the cargo, quickly ties the rope in his possession around Gareth’s waist. "Wait a second Gareth just in case." he says in the process of attaching the rope.
Jun 14, 2025 12:38 pm
Gareth nods. "Good thinking."

He takes a few tentative steps, now tethered, towards the open cargo hold, hoping to see the open crates better.
Jun 14, 2025 2:39 pm
Effie reappears in the entrance, the hole in the hull.

"Y'fuckin' egits, this whole place's unsafe! Don't tarry now, be quick!"
Jun 16, 2025 1:15 pm
You don't find anything in the ship. I'm not sure exactly what would be in the cargo hold of a ordinary ship of this time period, but whatever mundane supplies that you would expect to find, that's what you find, both in terms of the boxes on the beach, and those remaining in the ship. There's nothing out of the ordinary here, other than what's previously been described.

I imagine you'll want to follow the trail up the beach at some point, so I'll tell you what lies in that direction. The trail leads to a winding path that gradually works its way up the cliff face. The path leads to a cleft in the rock, that opens up into what appears to be a natural cave. You can't see the back of the cave from the entrance, even with your lanterns raised. You expect that it continues on, deeper into the cliff.

What do you want to do from here, players?
Jun 16, 2025 2:41 pm
"I'll go with you Effie, if you plan to follow those footprints," lowering his lanthern to the ground, highlighting the steps. "If I'm not wrong it looks like there were two of them helping someone else most likely. We should go see if they have another injured one like yer one back in the pub."
OOC:
Leaving a Track roll, to help with following the footprints. The Survival and Spot Hidden (not sure which is more appropriate) are for trying to figure out more about the tracks. Doesn't matter as they all failed
Argus is worried about staying on the beach, for what may happen with the wreck and how much worse the storm may get. As hard as he tries to focus on the tracks, his attention is taken with those other things. All he wants is to find survivors and get off the beach.

"Hey! What should we do with the bodies? The dead...dead, you know...people?" He stammer out to the group, pointing at the prone figures on the beach. "We should move them, do you think?"

It's alright, I wouldn't have had you roll in that circumstance anyway. It's an easy track to follow, it's on wet sand. I'm not one of those referees who asks for a roll to see what would be obviously visible for your characters in the context of the game.

OOC:
Did we check those bodies? I think we were distracted by the fish-man in the surf. I can imagine we’d give them a once-over before heading up the beach to the cliff and the cave.
Summoning McKinley and his light closer to the bodies, Effie takes a look and shakes her head. "They’s ain’t goin’ nowhere, Angus. Let’s keep sights set on them’s what might still be breathin’."
"Th’fuck did theys come heres for?" the woman swears as they peer into the gloomy cave. "If they gots injured, whys not make for the lighthouse?"

Sterling winds his rope up and follows along with the other, "I think Effie is right, the dead are not going anywhere. And besides I am not keen on getting back in that water yet." The Artist mumbles some stuff to himself as follow the trail, keeping up as best he can and stopping at the mouth of the cave. "Should we call out, we don’t want to be surprising anyone."
Jun 17, 2025 2:17 pm
Loosening the rope that Sterling had tethered around him, now Gareth turns his attention to the tracks the others have found.

"Aye... Let's see where they have carried that third fella to... there's them caves, that way. I agree... call ahead, they'll need help!"
He follows the others trailing the footprints.
OOC:
being natives of this small island, presumably we are familiar with the cave. What do we know about it? Would that have a suitable terrain for someone carrying a wounded man to shelter them?
