A Matter of Faith

You set out from Kelvin the next morning, traveling south along the Duke’s road. It is safer than the previous leg of your travel; the road still cuts through dense forests, with the Highreach River flowing to your left, but there are fortified watchtowers and small forts overlooking the road, and plenty of other people traveling south; mostly merchants, but a few farmers as well herding pigs or sheep to the market.
With the road well-traveled between Kelvin and Specularum, you have no trouble finding shelter at night in simple roadside inns. After several days of steady autumn drizzle, the dense woods begin to thin, giving way to a patchwork of fields, pastures, and scattered farms stretching across the horizon. By the time you approach the walls of Specularum, the clouds have thinned, allowing the sun to peek through every now and then.
There is a commotion awaiting you once you finally reach the city gates. Colorful tents, with banners representing every minor Thyatian noble house, sprawl just off the main road. Merchants paddle their wares, farmers set up stalls to sell fresh produce, and a few entrepreneurs from the city carry barrels of beer on carts back and forth through the main gate.
There are plenty of knights strolling the grounds, accompanied by servants, squires, and even their personal armourers, there to make some slight adjustments before the competition starts. All those farmers and merchants drawn to the tourney grounds end up crowding the main road and creating a traffic jam almost half a mile up, with merchants sitting on their carts without being able to make any progress for hours. The city guards constantly have to hurry the vendors off the road, to ensure the flow of travellers into the city remains uninterrupted, but it looks like they have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who came to spectate or profit off the fair.

Emerald eyes gaze ahead along the crowded road.
Announcing my divine presence probably won’t get us farther up the road any faster. But, saying we’re a knightly troupe here for a competition might. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at knightly events!
That’s just one idea.

Boudica half-shrugs and nods, and replies, "Sure, why not? I expect you'd excel in a tourney. But, uh, I wouldn't reveal your visions any time soon, especially not among Thyatians! But first, let's focus on getting this letter to its destination, ok? And let's not mention the letter either; we can tell the guard we are here for the tourney, but have business in town first. Yes?"

The small halfling standing near the city gates was ignored by just about everyone. No one spared him so much as a glance, which turned to his detriment when a man still looking back on the tournament grounds bumped into him and knocked him off his feet. The halfling, not a young one by your reckoning, found himself sitting in a puddle of mud, his pretty cloak splattered and soiled
He muttered something under his breath as he pushed himself up, and then tried once more to get someone's attention, this time from the party of adventurers approaching the gate:
"Hello! Might I trouble you for just a moment? It’s a matter of great importance!"
OOC:
@WhtKnt - there are three events in the tourney; the melee, the archery, and the Jousting. You need a horse, a lance, a suit of armor, and a noble title to compete in the latter, but the first two are open to any knight who wishes to put his name forward. Jul 8, 2025 9:40 pm
Boudica walks along, people watching, and thinking about her experiences thus far. When the muddy halfling speaks up, she stops and looks down and says, "Greetings, sir. You seem to be in some distress. Anything I can do to help?"

The halfling nods at Boudica: "My name is Baudry, Baudry Diggle" he tries to regain the dignity as he straightens his cloak "My people need help. The Shires are under attack! Raids of Hobgoblins from across the border. Your border!" he grows agitated, talking faster and faster as he's not sure how long you're going to stand and listen to him "And they're not just bandits. They are organized, and armed. And they don't just take our food. They're taking captives!" he swallows, hard "my cousin's farm burned. They took her boy" he shakes his head, trying to breath "No one would listen. I must talk with the Duke, but I can't get through. No one cares. But we're your neighbors! The Duke's army....surely someone can DO something to help us!"

We will do what we can. First, we must deliver an important message to the Church. Sooner we do that, sooner we can help you.
You wouldnt know a way to bypass this line, would you, Baudry?

Boudica frowns at Baudry's report and replies, "Well that certainly is alarming. As my friend says, we have very urgent business first, but then, yes, I would be happy to help you. At the very least, I will try to get word of your plight to someone who might be able to do something about it. And if I fail in that, I might offer my own assistance. My friends and I have dealt with bandits and the like before."

You push through the row of carts and pass under through the main gates. The broad streets of Specularum open before you, with rows of buildings on either side. Almost immediately, you spot the spires of the grand cathedral. It was built in the newer quarter, beyond the old Traladaran walls, and is the most prominent new landmark in the city. It rises high above the roofs around it, great white walls with tall stained-glass windows glinting in the sun. You can already see the white robed priests walking up the street, climbing up the broad steps leading to its heavy iron doors, together with the worshippers coming in for the daily prayer.

Boudica smiles at Baudry and says, "Ah yes, forgive my poor manners. I am Boudica, priestess of the Old Faith. Nice to meet you, Baudry."
Then she looks to her companions, points to the cathedral, and says, "The challenge will be getting an audience with him. Worst case scenario, we may need to interrupt a public ceremony and hand it to him..."

William, our fightery fellow replies to the halfling. But you can call me…Will.
Yes, friends, getting an audience might be difficult. Does the folded letter have a seal upon it?
