16th of Fyrmont, Gromdain

These are the final days of summer. The weather is getting cooler now; low clouds hang in the skies, occasionally shedding a light drizzle, and the light breeze is replaced by an occasional gust strong enough to cause ripples in the water. You’ve been following the Duke’s road along the Windrush river for the last three days. The road to Lav (Kelvin) still stretches before you, and it can easily be another week before you reach your destination.

It's near the end of the day that you reach Verge; a new stone castle strategically built on a gentile hill overlooking the River. A modest settlement began to grow beneath it, next to the riverbank; a cluster of fishing shacks and lean-tos that were already showing signs of permanence. There is smoke curling from the chimneys, and a few fishing boats tied up between the reeds.

You’ve been on the road for three days, it's getting dark, and this is the first settlement you’ve encountered since you left Threshold.
What do you do?
OOC:
Will has some personal connection to Hans Bowell, the Lord of Verge, a middle-aged Thyatian noble who fought in the Duke’s army and helped him quell the rebellion some twenty years ago. What is Will’s relation to Hans? Whatever it is, you are sure he will be happy to invite you to stay the night, and catch up on old gossip.

Anton had been tussling with the gaze that Moryana had given him, it unsettled him a bit. He wasn't sure if it was because of his tumultuous words about her being part of the coven, or something else. Being on the road again gave him too much time to think, even between the standard adventuring chores and his own research. Seeing the castle, and the small settlement beneath it gave him some hope for a warm bed and a nice meal.

"Shall we get food, and see if they have lodging?"

On the trip, Boudica shares some of the tales she knows of Halav and the other great heroes of her faith. If they are dealing with a curse, or perhaps a blessing, from Halav himself, such knowledge could be useful.

Once they arrive at Verge, she hears Anton's suggestion and nods in agreement. "Yes, and a hot bath, if we're lucky."

Yes, let’s parlay with the Lord. Hans Bowell, an old friend of my father. I met him about ten years past, when I was but a lad, he and my father both served alongside the Duke’s army. I wonder if he’ll remember me.

Will makes valiant approach to the castle. Looks like the old man has done well for himself, our fightery fellow quips.

The small fishing village starts settling into the evening as the sun begins to sink toward the horizon. Fishermen haul in the last of their nets, women return from the river with clay jugs balanced on their hips, carrying fresh water for the night’s meal. Others crouch near open fires, gutting fish or stirring pots suspended from iron hooks. Chickens and pigs wander freely along the river bank, scattering before your steps, and before the shaggy dog that happily trots behind you.

Plenty of heads turn as you walk through the village, and a few of the bolder children fall next to you and pester you with questions; where you're from, where you're headed, and whether you've actually slain any goblins. They all turn back toward the village as the road you follow begins to rise in a gentle incline, leading all the way up the hill to the castle. It is a modern fortification, built less than a decade ago to watch over the Duke’s Road and the Windrush. Guards patrol the ramparts, but the main gate remains open for now.

The guards pause as you approach, but once you give your names and purpose one of them disappears into the courtyard. He returns a short moment later, accompanied by a woman of noble bearing.

Lady Halia Bowell

"Will Winters!" the woman smiles as she steps closer, her lips breaking into a smile "By the Light, I’d hardly recognized you. You barely reached my shoulder, last time we saw you. You’ve grown into your father’s height. Taller, even, I daresay" Lady Halia Bowell, Hans' wife, is a middle-aged woman with golden hair and blue eyes. She wears a pale gown, embroidered with golden thread, and carries herself like someone used to command. She extends her hands warmly to clasp Will's with genuine fondness, before turning to look at the rest of the party "And these must be your companions?"

Boudica offers a formal bow and says, "Good evening, Lady Bowell. I am Boudica, priestess of the Old Faith. Thank you for receiving us so warmly."
Jun 5, 2025 1:29 pm
Yes, m’Lady. My friends and allies, Boudica, Anton, and Miyana. We come from Threshold, seeking shelter during a long journey. Could we stay and fellowship with you? So great to see you again.
Jun 5, 2025 1:35 pm
Anton closed the book he was reading as they walked in one hand, placed it behind his back and bowed deeply. "Lady Bowell, a pleasure, I am Anton Rybakov, Apprentice mage in good standing and service with the guild."

"I'm delighted to meet you all" she nodded at each of you, before gesturing to one of the nearby servants, "Hans is eager to see you all, but he is still in council. In the meantime, you can refresh yourself. I'll have a room prepared and hot water for your bath. I will send for you before the evening meal. You'll join us, of course" she said as if the matter was already decided.

Miyana shies away when introduced, but accepts the nod with grace. She is obviously uncomfortable in the noble environment.

Boudica nods and smiles, her face lighting up at the mention of hot water and a bath. "Thank you, my Lady, of course," she says. Then she gratefully follows the indicated servant.

You are shown to the guest quarters - a couple of private rooms along the western wing of the keep. They are plainly decorated, but bright and clean, and fresh linens are already laid across the beds. There are hot baths ready for you, and the servant girls even suggest taking your clothes to be cleaned and dried for tomorrow.

It is nice to relax, after a few days on the road. But you've barely finished drying off and dressing again when a knock comes at the door, and you're invited to join the Lord and the Lady for dinner. After a quick trip through the central corridors, you are eventually led to the dining hall; a cozy rectangular chamber with a long wooden table running down the center, already set with ceramic plates, a few goblets, and a pair of brass candlesticks. There are a few old portraits hanging on the walls, and a rug covering parts of the stone floor - on top of which lies a massive black hound, too sleepy to lift its head up when you enter the room.

"Will!" Hans is a large man, his once golden hair is now streaked with silver. He used to be a warrior, but now there's a hint of belly protruding underneath his tunic. "I can't believe it. Will Winters!" he strides forward, and clasps Will on his shoulder "How long has it been?"

He speaks in Thyatian, but when he notices he is in the company of 'foreigners', he apologizes: "You must forgive me. My Traladaran is shite. I'll speak the mother tongue, if you don't mind" His eyes go back to Will "Tell me, how's your father?" He doesn’t wait long for an answer before grinning wide "You look lean, lad. Too much time spent on the road? Well, worry not, tonight, you’ll eat like royalty. I’ve had the cook working in the kitchen since I heard you arrived" he gestures toward the long table, inviting all of you to sit down
Jun 5, 2025 6:06 pm
Boudica nods politely, keeping her irritation about the Thyatian arrogance to herself. She smiles over at the hound and then sits where indicated.
Jun 6, 2025 12:27 am
Miyana, likewise, tries to hide her distaste. "Thank you, M'Lord," she says as she is led to her seat.
Jun 6, 2025 10:42 am
Will thanks the host and takes a seat. Perhaps he feels very hungry from the journey, although he is wary even the best of feasts will still leave him feeling starving.
Thank you m’Lord. We’ve a long journey ahead of us.

You all settle down next to the table, but when the door opens again, Lord Hans promptly rises to his feet. His wife, Lady Halia, enters the room in the company of two servants and dour, neatly dressed children. The eldest boy, around twelve, walks with a stiffness of someone told to behave himself. His younger brother, around nine, is mainly looking at the table, somewhat disappointed the food hasn’t already arrived. The two girls, age six and two, walk closely to her mother, with the youngest gripping the hem of their mother’s gown in her tiny hand.

"I’m so pleased you’ve joined us for dinner. I hope the rooms are to your liking?" she smiles at them "These are our children; Edric, Alric, Sabina, and Ursula"

The children all give you a small bow, or curtsey, like they’ve been taught

"And this is Will Winters. His father served alongside your father in the Duke’s army, many years ago. In fact, he saved his life once. It’s an Honor to welcome his son under our roof"
The children awkwardly fidget at the introduction. They clearly don’t know what to make of Will, or why they should find him important. "He is an adventurer. As are his friends"

"Really? You’re real adventurers? Like the ones in the Epics?" the oldest of the boys take a sudden interest in you.

Hans says as he sits back down, but makes no attempt to discourage his children from gathering around all of you. At least not until the food arrives.
