Noxmorte sits at the silk-covered dice table, waiting for Osslame to make his roll. The old menacer frowns at the dice in his hand, tosses them into the air, catches them on his knuckles. Across the table, Scabbers chuckles ominously. "The game's not knucklebones, old fella," he says with a keen edge to his voice.

"I'll wager the tithe on the next spice camel from the Beryl Scale," says Osslame solemnly. "What will each of you match?"

Noxmorte's in Byzaron.
The City of Byzaron says:
The crossroads of all trade and riches. Seven colored gates welcome transients to it's crowded tenements, elaborate pleasure halls, and thief-choked markets. There is only one law in Byzaron; that a reasonable percentage goes to the hidden masters in their windcatcher towers. Truely, these psychic spiders know all within the city walls.
He's at the table in a high stakes game of Left-Right-Center. Onlookers crowd the walls of the small room. What does he wager? It doesn't have to be something he has now … just something he might escape with his life.

Already in the Center are scrawled slips:
• Scabbers: a night with the mistress of parakeets
• Noxmorte: (................................)
• Osslame: your enemy's left nut; a fine Larfarian blade

You've each won a bit, too.
• Scabbers: an old crown (from Noxmorte, where do you know to get one?); a virgin's teeth (from Osslame)
• Osslame: your enemy's right nut (from Scabbers); ...................... (from Noxmorte)
• Noxmorte: ............................... (from Scabbers)

The trick is to collect your winnings. Some of these bets pay slow. And it's all based on the honor of thieves. Who might kill to clear a debt.

Already in the Center are scrawled slips:
• Noxmorte: (a merchant's cart, still loaded)

You've each won a bit, too.
• Scabbers: an old crown (from Noxmorte, where do you know to get one?); a virgin's teeth (from Osslame)
• Osslame: your enemy's right nut (from Scabbers); a forgotten god (from Noxmorte)
• Noxmorte: antique dueling pistol set (from Scabbers)

I doubt either of these have seen the tithe from a spice camel. Ah well, it's the nature of this game.

Noxmorte picks up a blank slip and writes down the words, laying it in front of himself. "A bottle of fifty year old Barbasdu wine."

Here are the rules of this variant of L-R-C:

1 Center: put your chit in
2 Left: pass your chit to the left
3 Right: pass your chit to the right
4 Right: take the chit from your right
5 Left: take the chit from your left
6 Center: pick a chit from the pile

Rolls

Osslame: L-R-C - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Is Noxmorte to the left or right from Osslame?

OOC:
Also:
• anyone who holds the dice can say the bidding's closed, no more chits to be written
• a person must hold a chit to get the dice
• if all the people holding chits agree to end the game, the center pile is discarded

Noxmorte is on Osslame's left. At least, that's how I saw the table when I read your initial description.

Interesting. Same vision here. I wonder if there's some kind of default order-of-description that primes our visual imaginations? Anyway …
"A spider favor," Scabbers says glumly as he hands his chit to Osslame.

"Closed bids," Osslame says, smiling, before he tosses the dice to Noxmorte. "Your roll."

Meanwhile, the onlookers are making side bets in coinage. Such by custom is beneath the table players.
Jun 9, 2025 12:57 pm
Noxmorte takes the dice, under his breath he whispers a small prayer of thanks to the spiders for the luck he hopes to receive. The spiders take their percentage, even of prayers. He tosses the dice onto the table. Looking at the dice, he pushes the new chit for the wine into the Center, moves the Dueling pistol set back to Scabbers and retrieves the Forgotten god chit from Osslame.

"Busy … busy hands," says Scabbers as he accepts the dice. "Shall I roll as boldly? No." He casts only a single of the three dice.

The virgin's teeth go into the center pile. The dice go to Osslame, who casts two.

"God, and wine," Osslame says cheerily. He takes Noxmorte's two slips, and hands the dice.

I worry that this game could get dull before its natural end. Thoughts?

Didn't realize you could roll less than 3 dice. :) Also, without a chit, I not rolling for now. Feel free to keep going until I get a chit or the game ends. It's an interesting start for a game.

An obvious miscreant approaches the table and bows to speak in Osslame's ear. The old man looks across the table at Scabbers. "Business calls," he says. "Shall we end here?"

"Of course, old pal," Scabbers replies.

Freed of the table, where does Noxmorte go in Spider City?
