While the Trade Federation was ultimately defeated, their boldness (and evasion of consequences) emboldened other like minded powers.

They come to be known as the Separatist Alliance.
22 BBY - The Clone Wars - the member states of the Separatist Alliance begin open resistance, defiance, and aggression against Republic control. War spreads across the Galaxy.
19 BBY - Present Day - the Clone Wars are seemingly reaching a breaking point, both sides are in crisis after crisis, the leader of the Separatists - Count Dooku, has been assassinated. Coruscant has been sacked. Separatists and Republic alike are looking for allies wherever they can find them ...
