Good evening.
Singing Streets is a Vampire the Masquerade/light cross-splat chronicle set in New York, using the Revised/20ed rules. Set in the early 2010 it follows another turbulent period in the city's Cainite history. The players assume the roles of recently arrived (or Embraced) vampires, who are forced to take their early steps into the society of the undead amid a chaotic uncertainty and political upheaval. Whether they embrace it and dive head first into the turbulent currents of change or are simply making their way in the city, the Great Jyhad will undoubtedly touch every Cainite in some way or fashion.
The chronicle will be of a more open format, "sandbox" type game, with the idea that the coeterie/pack will unite to achieve some major goal - participate in the election of the new Prince/survive/etc, while simultaneously having collective goals (two of coeterie's Tremere members are working to establish a chantry) and personal (one is also searching for his Sire, while the other is harboring an unsanctioned childe of hers, for example). The theme and mood will likely depend on the combination of players - a group that is interested and leans more towards the murder mystery and personal angst type storylines will have a different experience than a coeterie of political schemers invested in a "city building" contest. I'm generally open to anything, but will try to assemble a more cohesive ensemble. I do not plan on running a combat intensive chronicle however, so keep that in mind.
In the same lieu, my attitude towards rules it pretty liberal - picking what fits or is appropriate of situation and leaning more on narrative to drive the story forward, rather than drown in the sea of dice rolls.
Similarly for the characters -
the builds, clans and dots are secondary to the ideas: i would much rather pick an interesting character with a shoddy "build" than an "okay" character with a solid sheet. While the players are, of course, free to create whomever they want, i will list few recommendations: some are suggested by the "New York By Night" setting book, others are more personal leanings, mentioned so we can be roughly on the same page and so that everyone could have a good and enjoyable time. So:
● Low power scale
Looking for fledglings>>neonates>>>>ancillae in that order. That is mostly NYBN dynamic which correlates to my personal tastes perfectly. While i won't explicitly prohibit older characters, I'd be very surprised if we end up with one.
● Sects.
Camarilla/Anarchs>Independent/Sabbat. I don't mind mixed groups, but i would like players to be both open and show some initiative in figuring out how the coeterie/pack will function. To be not just pieces but the glue as well.
● Clans/Bloodlines.
1) Yes: Caitiff (including Thin-bloods and Inceptors), Brujah, Daughters of Cacophany, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, Ventrue
2) Probably: Ravnos, Samedi, Gargoyles, Giovanni, Lasombra, Tzimisce
3) Maybe: Nagaraja, Blood Brothers, Ahrimanes, True Brujah, Baali, Laibon, Maeghar
4) Nope: Assamite, Setites, Kiasyd, Salubri and all other hobgoblins not mentioned
● Concepts.
Rich, but simple, with preference for regular people who haven't touched the supernatural before their Embrace (or much after). Cross-splat and deep lore stuff are best left at the door (that might sound a bit contradictory, considering the "maybe" list of esoteric weirdos above, but they are there mostly for their potential dramatic value - the loss of identity of Blood Brothers and Maeghar, the crisis of morality and faith of Baali and Nagaraja, etc.).
For Inceptors (Caitiff who can create new Disciplines) I'll be looking more for interesting
narrative powers, rather than mechanical - an ability to make your ears glow different colors is better than a skill for dealing aggravated damage. I'm not just open, but hopeful that we'll have at least one Inceptor character. Do give them a thought (and maybe a shot).
Most Physical and Mental Merits/Flaws should be fine, Social as well if they fit, Supernatural.. Feel free to pick any, but be ready to remove any as well. The less of them, the better.
Note for people interested in Vicissitude at all - we'll be using the optional rules from the "Guide to the Sabbat" book, aka "Vicissitude as a disease" theory if this Discipline ever comes into play.
● Dedicated Cross-Splat Spot.
I want to dip my toes into running cross-splat chronicles, hence why there is a reserved slot for a player portraying either a Mage or a Shifter. Mage setting will be played as is, Werewolf/Breeds will see some adjustments. We can discuss, pivot and set final changes depending on your character.
● Splat options.
Mage - Orphans, Hollow Ones, Traditions are a go, Nephandi are not, the rest is tentative maybe.
Werewolf/Changing Breeds.:
[ +- ]
Tribes that are good fit:
● Furies
● Gnawers
● Skin Dancers/Kinfolk looking to skin dance
● Glass Walkers
● Shadow Lords
● Silent Striders
● Ronins
Not a good fit tribes:
● Silver Fangs
● Children of Gaia
● Fianna
● Stargazers
● Wendigo
● Uktena
"F these guys" tribes:
● Talons
● Get
Lore Changes:
● Do away with petty bickering of tribes in and outside Caerns
● Gnosis over Rage - more of an exploration/subterfuge than physical fighting
● Remove or heavily tone down the Litany - the social crap goes, the war stuff stays
● Remove Renown and Ranks, update the social order to be more relaxed and chill; instead of Ranks, all Garou have to find and petition Spirits for Gifts, the more advanced the Gifts, the harder it is to obtain, as Spirits ask for increasingly more difficult tasks or outright Pacts, akin to Totem's Banes. Increase the importance of Rites, making them more like Thaumaturgy/Sabbat rituals/ritae. The Garou standing is a social construct, not supernatural; tracked through Backgrounds, like with vampires.
● Remove the Great Pact - Spirits are working with Garou because they are half-spirits, not because of some ancient agreement.
Breeds:
● Samsa - Mockery Breed of cockroaches
● Ananasi
● Bastet: Bubasti, Ceilican, Qualmi
● Corax
● Kitsune
● Nuwisha
As this chronicle is dealing primarily in Vampire themes and plots, your outsider will need to fit in. Vampire world should be their
main concern, their splat problems and ideas, while present, should take distant second place on your character list of priorities. My suggestion would be to go with either personal or business related affair. Here are some guidelines and examples:
1) Lover, not a fighter - this will not be a combat intense chronicle, so Get of Fenris Ahroun would feel out of place.
2) Fits the vampire world - some groups are naturally a better fit to the themes of Vampire or have some connection to Cainites - use them.
3) Adhere to the Power Scale - the character should be fresh of the mundane world boat to their respective splat.
4) Work with other players, not against them - be open to find some reason/s for your character to
want to be in the company of vampires/involved in their problems.
Examples:
Mage -
[ +- ]
Your mother left you when you were a teenager. The cancer took your dad not soon after. It was hard, but you managed to survive and even thrive. Your Awakening threw a big spanner in the works, but you've done as you always did - adapted and adjusted to this new part of your life. Leading a double life is exhausting but it has it rewards. When your friend suggested you take a break from work and invited you to a club you agreed. Imagine your surprise when you ran into your mother, who didn't seem to have aged a day. Thrown into another world full of conspiracies and secrets, will you be able to survive?
Werewolf -
[ +- ]
You've always been loyal - to the Nation, to your sept, to Gaia. You've done everything that was asked of you, had children, trained hard everyday, awaiting the moment of your First Change. But it never came. You hoped that you were simply one of those rare late bloomers, holding onto hope throughout your 20s. But you're in your 30s now. Still just a man. Lost, confused and angry. Why weren't you chosen? What have you done wrong? These thoughts swirled in your head as you slowly spiraled into depression. That is when you met her. The woman claimed that she understood how you felt, for the was the same. She whispered that there was a way for you to become what you were destined to be. You knew that wasn't possible, but you followed her anyway and she showed you. Her form, the patchwork pattern adorning her skin. She agreed to teach you the rite and put you in contact with someone - a hideous creature that would help you locate and slay 5 Black Spiral Dancers, to take their hides and attain the power you deserve. The being services are not free and paying the cost might kill you before you ever lay your eyes on one of the feared tainted werewolves.
● Applications.
For application i'd like you submit via PM your character concept and some info about them. Who are they? What are like? What are they about? What do they want/search for/trying to achieve? Next i'd like to know about you as player - what do you want to do with this character? What sort of themes are looking to explore? What sort of stories and genres appeal to you and what do not?
Note: no sheets are necessary at this point.
● Adult themes.
In a game of Vampire potential mature themes that might come up: psychological/psychiatric issues (such as with the Malkavian Clan), horror of all types and varieties, questions of morality and faith, violence and its descriptions (in moderation; this is not a weird fetish game after all), swearing. What i have no particular interest in touching as far adult topics go is sex - so none of that "i've spent all of my blood points popping boners at the orgy last night!" stuff. I'm, of course, willing to strike down some topics from the get-go or later in the game if they cause discomfort to players.
● Post frequency.
4-5+ would be good. Real life stuff obviously gets the priority, but i myself try to check the games i run every day or two and respond as fast as i'm able. It would be great if you could keep up as well. On another note, you might, if you want, include your timezone in the application, so that when you form smaller sub-groups from the coeterie, you can join someone on a similar time and potentially get a few more posts of inter-party banter in.
● Dying, PVP and loss of control.
Final Death is technically on the table, but i will try to steer you away as much as i can, should you decide to go wild, such as telling you that "hell yeah i want to take that pack of rabid werewolves on!" might not be a good idea. PVP, scheming against party members and betrayals are
really not encouraged. Simply put, that is not that kind of game i want to run, especially with strangers. By loss of control i mostly mean the varied methods of mind and emotional manipulation that are available to the Cainites. I will always ask you if you're fine with roleplaying any sort of "outside affliction" and i hope that you will extend your fellow players the same courtesy, and, to a lesser extent NPCs - there is a fine line between roleplaying "domineering Ventrue" and indulging into your own fantasies and fetishes.
● Additional resources.
None, we'll be playing right here - no discords or anything else.
● Amount of players and experience level.
Looking for at least 2-3, but am willing to go as high as 5-6. That will likely depend on the applications - if two similarly unique, niche, interesting ideas appear, i'd be more than willing to play them out for just a few folks, as opposed to the bigger coeterie/pack with conflicting interests. As for experience level - i don't mind players who are new to the Vampire/WoD lore and setting, in fact that might work better - slowly learning it all during the course of the game, plus less of a chance of accidental or unconscious metagaming moments. But i would like for beginners to at least be familiar with basic rules. Free quickstart for the Revised Vampire is on
drivethru . Playing Mage/Shifter would likely require at least some familiarity with the chosen splat rules. The rest we'll figure out as we go. If there are any questions, i'll post any rules needed, or clarify them as they come up in play.
That is all. Feel free ask any questions here or via PM.
Good evening.
