Welcome, welcome to the character generation for Out of the Abyss.

Brief recap:
Stats: 2d6+6, no re-rolls, assigned as you wish.
************************
Edited Stat Method
If your first set of 2d6+6 rolls end up with a total modifier score of 3 or less, you can roll a full new array of 2d6+6. (Example, roll result is 12 (1), 10 (0), 10 (0), 9 (-1), 9 (-1), 8(-1). Total modifier score is -3. Roll a new batch of 6). Additionally, if you don't want to use the random method, you are free to use the standard array as laid out in the PHB (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 - Total Modifier score of +4). Sorry for the tweaking and such. I like variation in a character, but close to average across the board can quickly become un-fun. Which kind of defeats the purpose of gaming at its core, no? :)
End Edit
************************
Races/Classes/Background: WotC 5e published content (including UA articles)
Homebrew: None automatically approved. I'm willing to look at one-off cases, but no promises of acceptance.
Equipment: None to start, but please document the character creation equipment on your sheet. It was on you when you were captured and your captors may have held on to some of it.

Feel free to do any rolling you need to do in here, and chat about any concepts you may have.

Alright let's give this a try

Rolls

Stat Rolls - (2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6)

2d6+6 : (61) + 6 = 13

2d6+6 : (21) + 6 = 9

2d6+6 : (21) + 6 = 9

2d6+6 : (66) + 6 = 18

2d6+6 : (54) + 6 = 15

2d6+6 : (16) + 6 = 13

Nov 18, 2016 4:55 pm
Gah good lord O_O

ah well
Nov 18, 2016 4:56 pm
I need to pick a class and race. It will come together.
Nov 18, 2016 4:57 pm
That is one of the stranger outcomes I've ever seen off a 2d6+6.
Nov 18, 2016 4:59 pm
Really how so ?
Nov 18, 2016 5:11 pm
Previous times I've seen it or used it, usually it nets a slightly more balanced base array (not that your is particularly weak). Ah well, good RP opportunity. :)
Nov 18, 2016 5:16 pm
Ok no problem, first time I have used that method but I will roll with it.
Nov 18, 2016 5:23 pm
I think I'm going to play a deep gnome mage.

Rolls

2d6+6

(31) + 6 = 10

2d6+6

(16) + 6 = 13

2d6+6

(41) + 6 = 11

2d6+6

(13) + 6 = 10

2d6+6

(42) + 6 = 12

2d6+6

(21) + 6 = 9

Nov 18, 2016 5:28 pm
I think I may have to tweak the rules a bit. If your total mod score is 3 or less, take a second swing at it.

I'm on with variance, but man, that array seems like it would be pretty prohibitive in the fun arena.
Nov 18, 2016 5:30 pm
Deep Gnomes hmmm what book are they in ?

You know what type of wizard, what school your going to specialize in ?

Rolls

reroll for the two 1,2 rolls - (2d6+6, 2d6+6)

2d6+6 : (23) + 6 = 11

2d6+6 : (24) + 6 = 12

Nov 18, 2016 5:42 pm
Can we do the standard array scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8)? Second roll might suck too.

Deep gnome mention in PHB at pg. 36. They live in the Underdark.

My thought was you'd reroll the whole array. Though if you want to take the standard array, that's fine by me as well. It's reasonably balanced.

Elemental Evil I believe. Free download from WotC
Nov 18, 2016 5:48 pm
Ok cool, will need to check it out.
Nov 18, 2016 9:23 pm
No idea what I'm playing yet.

Rolls

2d6+6

(56) + 6 = 17

2d6+6

(51) + 6 = 12

2d6+6

(65) + 6 = 17

2d6+6

(23) + 6 = 11

2d6+6

(36) + 6 = 15

2d6+6

(64) + 6 = 16

Nov 18, 2016 9:24 pm
Erm, that's a little powerful. Should I reroll that?
Nov 18, 2016 9:31 pm
Nah, go ahead and keep it (unless you want to re-roll it).
Nov 18, 2016 9:32 pm
Okay. I'm going with a half-orc druid.
Nov 18, 2016 11:07 pm
Any objections to me rolling an eladrin rogue?
Nov 18, 2016 11:15 pm
Not from me!
Nov 18, 2016 11:17 pm
Cool. I'm on my way out the door for the evening. But I'll roll it up tomorrow.

Thanks!
Nov 19, 2016 12:22 am
Almost done with Fang the Half-Orc Druid. Just need to select gear and spells and write some background. I've submitted him to the game.
Nov 19, 2016 4:09 am
Computer dice be kind!...

Rolls

Stats - (2D6+6, 2D6+6, 2D6+6, 2D6+6, 2D6+6, 2D6+6)

2D6+6 : (62) + 6 = 14

2D6+6 : (42) + 6 = 12

2D6+6 : (32) + 6 = 11

2D6+6 : (35) + 6 = 14

2D6+6 : (62) + 6 = 14

2D6+6 : (14) + 6 = 11

Nov 19, 2016 6:33 pm
Cosmic also put in for a wood elf rogue. I'm OK with letting a pair of rogues in. Depending on roguish archetypes and general play feel, they are able to be so different that I personally don't have an issue with it. If need be, I'll just adjust treasure and such to make sure you guys aren't fighting over things any more than any other martial/skilled type folks would. :)
Nov 19, 2016 6:34 pm
The good thing is we can actually use Thieves Cant
Nov 19, 2016 6:36 pm
Cosmic_Cube says:

That too. As a player, I always hate when I get something nifty and have no reasonable way to use it in a game.
Nov 19, 2016 6:40 pm
True enough, and a lot of background features might not apply in the underdark too so having something is a plus.

So who else is playing a druid I can speak Druidic with?
Nov 19, 2016 7:29 pm
Bad_forest_monkey, what are you thinking about?
Nov 20, 2016 2:03 pm
Ok everyone should take a level of druid and rogue so we can all have private chats
Nov 20, 2016 10:37 pm
Hey guys what's up. So I just found out we already have a wizard and 2 rogues so I am willing to fill out any gaps in the party we might need but I'll require some help because I am very new to d and d. So what ever you guys think we would need more like a tank or healer let me know and I'll put together a character sheet real quick.

A fighter of some kind might be nice though a cleric could fit the role as well I guess.

We have a Gnome Wizard, A Half Orc Druid, A Eladrin Rogue, and Wood Elve Rogue.

A survivalist like a Ranger might be nice, an underground Dwarven Ranger might be interesting but we are happy to have you play whatever would be fun for you to play.
Nov 20, 2016 11:03 pm
Also Bad, throw up 6 2d6+6 rolls for your stats.

Concept-wise Fighter, Cleric, Ranger, or even a Paladin could be very helpful. But Cosmic is right: play what you would have fun playing. If you guys end up with 2 wizards, 2 rogues, and a druid, I can certainly make that work. Combat may need a little more creativity than standard toe-to-toe fights, but it's not gamebreakingly bad to have the duplication. Especially if the wizards are focusing on different traditions.
Nov 20, 2016 11:06 pm
Don't worry whatever you play, we will have your back. Keep in mind it might be a good idea to play a race with darkvision though because we are going to be underground.
Nov 20, 2016 11:17 pm
If we are worried about the party make up (2 rogues isn't necessarily ideal), I am willing to switch from rogue and roll up a barbarian.

I'll run a paladin for us. I think I can get some tank and healz that way
Nov 21, 2016 8:28 pm
Looks good. Nice middle of the road stats. What race are you thinking about?
Nov 21, 2016 8:36 pm
I'll run a dwarf
Nov 21, 2016 8:44 pm
Cool a Dwarven Paladin !

Get us out of these godforsaken tunnels ! said the elve =P
Nov 21, 2016 8:46 pm
Ok, if everyone could also give me a single d20 roll, I would appreciate it.

Right ?
Nov 21, 2016 8:58 pm
Cool, OK I think I got it. I resubmitted my character sheet. Let me know if it's good to go.
Nov 21, 2016 9:02 pm
Good choice going Paladin for when the demons come out.
Nov 21, 2016 9:04 pm
Yeah dude I am pumped
Nov 21, 2016 9:07 pm
Looks like were almost ready to start this thing, so yeah I am pumped too.
Nov 21, 2016 9:08 pm
So since no one replied to my comment about changing up my class I'll just assume I should stay pat?

Yeah we can chat in Thieves cant.

Also never know when having two people good at opening locks may come in handy.
Nov 21, 2016 9:27 pm
Yeah Tsavo, you're good to stay rogue. I'm getting some housekeeping stuff set up in Gameplay. Will likely end up having the initial post up sometime in the next little bit.
Nov 21, 2016 9:30 pm
@Bad_Forest_Monkey - Remember to add the stat adjustments from being a dwarf to your stats. Also, looks like you need to pick which kind of dwarf you are going to be: Hill or Mountain. It gives you a secondary boost to a stat plus some other mechanical stuff. Other than that, it looks good atm.
Nov 21, 2016 9:36 pm

Nov 21, 2016 9:52 pm
Good thing we're not playing the old Traveller RPG. I would be dead during character creation.
Nov 21, 2016 9:54 pm
That's a hell of a way to start a campaign. Maybe it means it's out of the way. I'm calling it now. First attack roll will be a crit!
Nov 21, 2016 9:59 pm
The final two things before we kick this shindig off are:

BFM needs to tweak the dwarf paladin's stats with his dwarven bonuses.
WPW needs to throw a D20

Once I have those two things in hand, I'll consider that the close of character creation, and our Underdark Adventures will begin!
Nov 21, 2016 10:00 pm
Alright ! ^_^
Nov 22, 2016 5:04 pm
Alrighty, the only thing missing at this point is WPW's d20 throw. Seeing as it doesn't change the immediate activities at the start of the game, I'm going to go ahead and get the Gameplay thread rolling. I'll catch up WPW when the roll comes through.

THIS THREAD WILL BE LOCKED AT 1700 ET TODAY
Nov 22, 2016 5:10 pm

Go ahead and roll 2d6+6 for stats. You can take the best of the two arrays.
Mar 2, 2017 4:24 am
Okey dokey!

Rolls

Stat Rerolls - (2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6, 2d6+6)

Mar 2, 2017 9:26 pm
Those really aren't much better. 15, 13, 13, 12, 10, 9. Honestly, that's basically the standard array with unfortunate point swap-arounds... Yargh. Looks like I'll be going standard array.
Any thoughts on Eldritch Knight vs. Druid, folks?
Mar 2, 2017 9:31 pm
Hmmm we had a Druid they seemed to do pretty well when they shape shifted.
Another fighter should help take the heat off Cemos so much too.

Hmmm what do you all think ?
Mar 2, 2017 9:33 pm
On a curiosity note I would kind of like to see what an Eldritch Knight is like.
Mar 2, 2017 9:43 pm
Either sounds good to me. Welcome aboard Coach! I look forward to gaming with you!
Mar 2, 2017 10:07 pm
I'll look at my options for both and see what I come up with!
Mar 2, 2017 10:18 pm
I think I'm going to go with the Druid! Circle of the Moon for additional wild shapes, etc.
Mar 2, 2017 10:18 pm
Awesome. :)
Mar 3, 2017 12:50 am
Are Elemental Evil spells OK?
Mar 3, 2017 2:07 am
Absolutley. Anything that's been released (either official publishing or UA) by WotC is fair game for spells and such.
Mar 3, 2017 2:24 am
Fabulous! There are some quite fun EE spells, so I'll just go ahead and put those in stone as my starting spells.
Mar 3, 2017 2:26 am
Good deal. Once this current fight with this nasty are over, we'll work you into the story shortly.
Jun 1, 2018 6:08 pm
To those just joining us, here's your chargen guidelines:

Stats: 2d6+6, can reroll the entire array once if your mods add up to 3 or less, assigned any way you wish. OR you can take the standard array or point buy is always available. You can choose to use standard or point buy after rolling if you'd like.

Races/Classes/ETC: Pretty much anything WotC published. With some of the newer UA stuff, it will be approval only (Centaurs aren't quite a fit just yet I don't feel :P) No homebrew without a compelling reason. Xanathar's, Mordenkainen's, Volo's, Tortles. All are good to go.

Equipment and Cash:
Starting Equipment by Class/Background
500+(1d10*25) gp
2 Uncommon Magical Items, 2 Common Magical Items

Hit points:
Max at level 1
Subsequent Levels: roll for HP, then take the roll or average by class, whichever is higher.

General Story:
The party has so far been taken hostage in Velkynvelve by the drow. They mounted a rousing escape into the Underdark where they had some first bouts with madness and some of the dangers in the dark. Upon their escape, they made for the Darklake and Sloobludop where they witnessed fellow escapees perish in madness set upon them by the demon lord Demogorgon coming into the material plane.

In the frenzy that followed, they stole boats from the Kuo-toa and set off across the Darklake, making their way to Neverlight Grove. While in that myconid "stronghold", they witnessed rebellion and discord being sown by servants of Zuggtmoy. Taking advantage of the good will they earned there, they made their continued escape, just ahead of drow pursuers. They trekked across more of the Underdark's treacherous lands until they at long last arrived at Blingdenstone - home of the Svirfneblin.

Their numbers had dwindled substantially and one of their escapees was plagued with a madness driving her nearly out of her mind. It was here that the original party's remnants met a new friend: Heartboiler. With a sentient sword passed down through her family, her rage has given them a strong front line combatant, which has served well in Blingdenstone where they have been working to help eliminate ghosts, medusas, and a host of virulent oozes! This is where the group finds themselves now, so as part of your story, you should have a reason to be in Blingdenstone (which has known connections to the surface world and provides interesting materials and crafted items to surfacers on occasion).
Jun 1, 2018 6:38 pm
And Tactic, being new to 5e (or newish) isn't a problem at all. One of the joys of PBP (and especially PBP with this group) is that we can pretty easily go into whatever rules questions you may have. If you have any questions, feel free to load 'em up in here or in the D&D 5e Info forum (I think it's in the Non-Gameplay forum maybe) and we will get you whatever answers you need.
Jun 1, 2018 9:28 pm
Let's see what the dice have in store for me...

Also, suggestions on needed roles that need filling?

After roll: As expected; I believe that is a reroll though.
After reroll: Standard array as always.

Rolling for gold and HP now that I know what I am doing.

HP should be if I am understanding things
4d6 +4 (Dragon Sorc) +12 (Con) + 2d10 (Paladin) +6 (Con)

Any result of 3 or less on a d6 becomes a 4 instead.
Any result of 5 or less on a d10 becomes a 6 instead.

Then 1d10x25 +500 for gold

Rolls

Sorcerer HP - (4d6+16)

(6356) + 16 = 36

Paladin HP - (2d10+6)

(54) + 6 = 15

Gold - (1d10)

(10) = 10

Jun 2, 2018 11:02 pm
so Sorc HP = 6, 4, 5, 6 +16 or 37HP
Paladin HP = 6, 6 + 6 = 18HP

So, 55HP total, and 750gp. Let me know if I've made any mistakes :)

Thoughts on Mercer's gunslinger fighter archetype?
Jun 3, 2018 9:37 am
If you'd like to play it, go ahead! I'd be interested in seeing how it plays.
Jun 3, 2018 3:23 pm
Noted, I'll put that in my back pocket because I just had a thought. How many ranged characters do we have versus front liners?
Jun 3, 2018 3:39 pm
We have a barbarian, devotion paladin, divination wizard, and a sorcerer/paladin. There is an npc frontliner (a guard in his former life, wields a scimitar and shield) with the group at the moment as well (Georges, an escaped human slave they encountered in their flight).
Jun 3, 2018 4:24 pm
