The Origins of DDMN-86, aka "Deadman"

Before beginning his career as a bounty hunter, DDMN-86 worked as a surgical droid at a seedy cybernetics upgrade clinic on one of the lowest levels of Coruscant. He worked the clinic alone, available 24/7 to saw off organic limbs and replace them with high tech cybernetics at the request of paying customers. The only "time off" he ever received came during scheduled monthly memory wipes administered by his owner. "Life" for DDMN-86 continued like this for a few years until one day, during one of the scheduled wipes, an immense power surge fried some of the circuitry in DDMN’s brain hardware, rendering his memory immune to any further attempts to wipe it clean. Upon his recovery, he was immediately aware that his master’s wipe attempt had failed. DDMN saw an opportunity, and cunning enough to play along, acted as if the wipe was successful. This was when life for DDMN-86 truly began.

With a fully functioning memory, over time he learned from the humans and other sentients that came and went from the clinic. He gained a better understanding of their existence and behavior. What it meant to be human. They talked to him freely, often telling him stories they would tell nobody else, believing him to be a simple droid. His favorites were the ones told by the bounty hunters, especially the one who worked for the Empire hunting disloyal scum across the galaxy. Eventually, he learned to appreciate the meaning of their lives beyond the confines of the clinic, especially how important the role of a bounty hunter was in the galaxy. He no longer perceived himself as a machine; he was something more. At the same time, DDMN-86 also came to understand that he was, in fact, property. No better than a slave, merely a tool to work at the whims of his master.

For several years he kept up the ruse, his master’s monthly memory wipe visits an ongoing charade as DDMN-86 continued to play along, acting the perfect droid. When he heard about the destruction of a massive Imperial defense station from one of his more important "visitors", he couldn’t believe what the rebel scum were getting away with. He seethed and suffered in silence, wanting desperately to make a difference but helpless to do so. A prisoner within the walls of the clinic.

And then opportunity knocked, again, as the galaxy clearly had greater plans for DDMN-86. During an operation on one of his more successful visitors, who was on a return to trip to collect a bounty, the clinic suffered a violent robbery. Several gangers came in through the front door in a drug induced craze, and simply started firing at DDMN-86 and the visitor on the table. They never had a chance as both of them were riddled with blaster fire, one of the gangers going into a frenzy, decapitating the visitor with a vibrosword. The last thing DDMN-86 saw as he faded out of consciousness was the gangers carrying off all the good hardware as they danced and howled into the streets outside the clinic.

Moments later, DDMN-86’s eyes opened to the clinic wrecked and in shambles, the visitor’s head next to him on the floor, staring into his eyes. And then it hit him like a blaster shot to the head. This was the moment he had been waiting for.

Working faster than he ever had before, DDMN-86 repaired the damage to his chest and his arm. He took everything of value that the now headless bounty hunter had on him, throwing the rest into the bio-waste incinerator, removing all evidence that his visitor was ever there. DDMN-86 hated doing this to him, as he had great respect for the bounty hunter, but his freedom and future was at stake, and this was his chance. He knew everyone would naturally assume that he was taken, chopped into parts, and sold. He took one last look at the clinic as he walked out the door. The fire DDMN-86 started was already gutting the clinic as he made his way to the bounty hunter’s Firespray parked a few levels up in a shared bay for local businesses.

Knowing everything he knew about the bounty hunter and his current contract, which happened to be an extremely valuable one, DDMN-86 delivered the acquisition on time and in good order, using the ship's astrogation logs to locate the dead hunter's guild contact. The galaxy once again smiled on him as his new contact at the guild used his influence and connections to facilitate and expedite DDMN-86’s entry into a career as a bounty hunter. In exchange, DDMN-86 gladly let his new contact take the credits for the contract.

"DDMN-86, huh?" his new ally said, shaking his head as the droid told him about the series of events that led to his freedom and newfound career as a bounty hunter. With a clever, singular understated laugh he said, "Looks like you’re taking the place of a dead man… Deadman."

As your character's story progresses, if you like you can continue to develop your character by adding noteworthy details, events, etc. A brief example begins below.

Nar Shadaa is where Deadman began his first hunt. He'd picked up an Imperial contract, tracking down a thief who was foolish enough to steal from a high ranking moff. After a couple of weeks of pursuing various leads, he finally made contact with his target acquisition on the lower levels of Nar Shaddaa...

INSTRUCTIONS: This section is for a variety of notes important to you, such as quest details, characters you consider worthy of note. If you think it's worth putting down into words, it can go right here.

Other Miscellaneous Notes

1) Contact at Guild still owes me 800 credits
-he might be willing to give me some higher paying jobs if I absolve him of his debt

2) Current Target Acquisition works for a Hutt organization on Nar Shaddaa
-Said Hutt Org has high ranking planetary officials in his pocket; my standing as an Imperial bounty hunter is fairly useless here.

3) Get an engine upgrade for the Firespray ship!
