As a GM, I find creating a fun campaign in a universe everyone already knows very well more rewarding and fun, personally. I have the hardest times with newer universes that have less material to choose from. I think this is because I have to make up more of it and do the hard work to ensure it's consistent, etc. Whereas with something like Star Wars, Star Trek or Middle Earth -- all I have to do is pick up a book or hit a couple websites and I'm reminded of "facts" or "reality" about that universe that I can use.

It reduces my workload a lot and helps me focus on other parts of the story.

I was thinking recently that it was weird that Star Trek didn't have a great RPG system... maybe that'll change! :)

It is kind of strange. I'm hoping this system turns out to be that system that works well, though we'll see during playtest I suppose!

I've usually run homebrew worlds myself, mostly because If I do, noboy else can tell me what's really behind that hill over there. Running something in Forgotten Realms or similar (well established, but I haven't read any of it) seems a bit of a nightmare to be honest.

But the Star Trek Universe or Middle earth? Those I know fairly well, and I think the ST universe is an awesome fit for a RPG. And.. well.. This being a PbP means I get time to look up anything I'm not sure of if I need it (not a luxury I have in my RL game). Looking forward to running this one :)

Oh, and we have 2 submitted characters:
* Phenna (Dramasailor) Denobulan, Conn/Engineering
* Nadim Patil (falryx) Human, Medicine/Security

Once the rest of you get your characters submitted we can launch the shuttle to Narendra Station and your first postings!

I wasn't sure if the format worked for you or not. I figured I'd throw something up and see what stuck.
Dec 1, 2016 8:04 pm
Yeah, it's a bit hard to fit the info into the custom sheet. But as long as all the info is there, and it's easy for you to reference, it works for me. Falryx chose a similar way of doing it.

Oh, and Falryx: sorry, I was going to check your character for reference, but managed to click "remove character" :o can you resubmit?

Shall do!

Quick additional heads up:

Tue 12/13 - Fri 12/16 - work travel to CA and CO. Uncertain how active I'll be.
Sat 12/17 - Uh. Rogue One. Duh.
Sun 12/18 - Sat 12/24 - skiing Sun Valley
Sun 12/25 - Christmas

So.. basically scarce between 12/13 - 12/25. If things slow down or stop during this time, that's why. I'll be back and raring to go on 12/26 however.

Thanks for the heads up.

I am reminded of one of my favorite Star Trek clips...

Just like the Federation...
Dec 8, 2016 7:49 am
Hehe. Those two are quite a pair. How DS9 managed to make 3 likeable Ferenghi, and a likeable Cardassian, I'll never know :o

Heads up - concocted the plague on Friday -- and now in my business travel time. TBD on how/whether I can get some updates in before the weekend. If not, I'll definitely be updating on 12/26.

Azira -- please feel free to run Nadim in my absence!

Sounds like rock is a pillar that needs to be shot and made to fall over the ravine there by creating bridge, correct interpration?
Dec 16, 2016 2:32 pm
Oh, no. It looks a bit heavy for that. Good idea though, but one of you'll probably need to get over and push it over.

It's against character, but could Thyran have performed a task to find a lever and fulcrum, reducing the difficulty of moving the boulder?
Dec 19, 2016 7:14 am
That's a very good question. Normally I tend to reward creative thinking, so I'd absolutely allow that. However, this Task/Momentum system is very cinematic. It almost looks like Momentum is used to describe actions that make tasks easier, and that the characters are assumed to be doing their best/cleverest at all times. How are the rest of you reading this?

That being said, if I was to run this outside of a playtest I'd probably let players reduce difficulty (some) by creative thinking. I'm just not sure about the consequences to the game system.

i thought you only made momentum based on FOCUS level, in this case Secuirty =1, neith die roll was 1 so no momentum....did i miss something?
Dec 20, 2016 11:21 am
On page 4:
Quote:
If the total number of successes is greater than the Difficulty, then each success above and beyond the Difficulty of the Task becomes a single point of Momentum
Though FOCUS can give you more successes. From the same page:
Quote:
Each die that rolls a 1, or equal to or less than an applicable Focus for that Task, scores two Successes.
