Nadim steps away from the table where's been performing some emergency surgery on Dr. Jasper. "I've got a Delta-wave inducer on him to keep him asleep for a bit. He's suffering from some kind of devolution symptoms that appear to be regressing him into an earlier form of homo sapien. I've never seen anything like this before..."

Nadim asks Dr. Shipp, "When did this start to happen, and are you aware of any triggering events?" Nadim looks over to his science colleague and asks, "Any thoughts on possible logical explanations, Sevek?"
Dec 26, 2016 9:05 pm
Visibly relieved that Jasper is out of immediate danger, Dr. Shipp relaxes slightly. She sighs, and sits down next to Jasper, cradling his hand. "Oh, yes. My initial thesis is that it might have something to do with the storm. It began about a week ago. We..."

She raises her head and looks at Nadim. "Oh, Ensign. You're a medical officer. You know about Irumodic Syndrome? We had just made a breakthrough! We just discovered that a combination of the genetic material of the local fauna and flora may be useful in the treatment, and possibly a cure for, Irumodic Syndrome.! We were so exited, and were just about to gather our findings for the monthly report to Starfleet when the storm hit."

She winces at painful memories, and looks down at Dr. Jasper. "Some of our team changed immediately, others took longer. There were... Hostilites in and around the outpost. We locked ourselves in here, and tried to hold out. But we had to get a message out to Starfleet. The communications array was damaged in a scuffle when the first of us... changed.."

She takes a deep breath before continuing.
"It took some time before we were able to repair it, and Jasper was assulted when he went outside to mend the antenna. I barely got him inside before they beat him to death! Then.. Well.. Then I was able to send the distress signal, and you were good enough to come to our rescue."

At the mention of rescue, her demeanor brightens slightly. She looks up at all of you, then seeing your eyes she grows slightly worried again. "Say. Where is your ship, Ensigns? I did not hear you touch down outside?"

"Unfortunately, doctor, the ion storm forced us into a controlled crash landing about two kilometers south of here. I have every confidence that Mr. Phenna can get us off planet." Thyran changes the subject to security, "Does this outpost have a weapons locker or any other defensive equipment? We know a safe way back to the shuttle, but a little more fire power would be helpful to ensure safe passage."
Dec 27, 2016 4:54 pm
"So we're still stranded here? Just as I thought we were saved! We need to get Jasper off planet, soon! He's changing too. And, to be perfectly honest, I'm starting to feel strange myself.. " She looks worried at Jasper, towards the laboratories.

"Also, we we need to get some pristine, un-devolved, specimens from the local fauna to Starfleet. I've checked, the original specimens we gathered have devolved, and no longer have the needed characteristics for a potential cure to the Irumodic Syndrome. We need to find new samples, and we need to get them off planet before they devolve like the rest of us."

Answering Thyran's request for arms, she shrugs and looks around in the storage area you are in. "I am afraid we are a science outpost. None in our team have any weapons training other than the obligatory phaser course. So we only have Type I phasers for personal security. We probably do have spare parts for your shuttle or any other technical devices though. There's a manifest over there." She points to a data pad by the door.
OOC:
If you inspect the datapad you will find you have most of the spare parts necessary to repair the shuttle. You can scavange for the rest (a new extended task/obstacle) There aren't any more arms here though, only 5 type I phasers.
Dec 27, 2016 4:59 pm
On the datapad it looks like we've got most of the spares we need to fix the shuttle. We may have to scavenge for the rest, but we can certainly rig something up. Phenna says as she scratches her head. If one or two of you want to come with me to scavenge around, we'll get parts and get back to the shuttle. See if we can't get it up and running again. Once that's done, we can either try to radio to you to head out or we can attempt to get the shuttle over and docked, though that carries the risk of breaking things again.
Dec 27, 2016 8:49 pm
Nadim frowns, "I'm concerned about a storm having this kind of biochemical effect on local flora and fauna -- and us for that matter. Perhaps there's some way to counter it? Or possibly reverse the effects? I'm worried about the other Starfleet scientists out there that we managed to scare off..."
Dec 28, 2016 7:04 am
"Do you think it can be countered? Reversed? If there's a chance to save the ones who devolved, I think we should give it our best shot."

Thyran collects the extra type 1 phasers Dr. Shipp mentioned, then, after a quick peek outside, moves to double check that the exits are all secure. He's thinking that these brilliant minds will need time to solve this riddle, and that's the one think he can try to give them. Knowing that the savages that they faced are former members of the science station's crew, he makes sure that his phaser and the other phasers that he collected are set to stun.
Dec 28, 2016 4:37 pm
While the others are helping the Nadim stabilize the patient, Martinez starts to investigate the lab equipment along with the various logs that were referenced by Dr. Shipp.

"Dr, you stated that the first signs of change came during the storm.." as he glance over towards her, "... is that correct?" as he also watched Nadim reaction to the doctors story. She nodded in agreement.

Taking a moment to collect his thoughts, Martinez put on his best poker face. "Ensign Patil,..." with a momentary pause, "...let the rest of us worry about the other scientists, you should concentrate... focus on figuring out what has happened here as I am sure what ever they have been exposed to, we all are now as well." he stated with an emphasis for that task that was before Ensign.

"Contact me the moment you find something,..." as he re-adjusted his phaser to stun, "meanwhile the rest of use need to assist Phenna get what she needs to get the shuttle working again".

With that Francisco maneuvered towards Phenna and her data-pad, to see what he could do to help out..

"Reversed? I don't know. I'm a biologist, not a doctor. I did make an initial analysis of the devolution process, with some suggestions to cures, but I couldn't make them work. We don't even know what the true cause is. The Ion storm, perhaps, but how?" She retrieves a datapad from a field pack nearby and gives it to Nadim.
OOC:
Curing the devolution is a challenge with multiple stages, the first stage is to identify the cause. Identifying the cause of the devolution is an Obstacle with a Progress of 8 and a Magnitude of 2, requiring Reason + Science Tasks with a Difficulty of 3.

Scavanging the remaining parts is an Obstacle with a Progress of 13 and a Magnitude of 3, with a Difficulty of 4 for each Task to overcome it. Main task: Reason + Engineering, other alternatives: Reason + Conn and Control + Science. (or anything else you can get to make sense)

Gathering speciments for the Irumodic Syndrome is another challenge. Dr. Shipps notes specify three different types of local flora and fauna that is needed. You will have to venture deeper into the wilderness to retrieve them:

This is a Challenge, with a minimum of six Tasks. These tasks are split into two types – locating samples, and collecting samples. Locating a sample requires an Empathy or Reason + Science Task with a Difficulty of 2, with success allowing that sample to be collected. Collecting a sample requires a Bravery or Control + Science Task with a Difficulty of 3. Once three samples have been collected, the Challenge is complete.
She turns to Martinez to answer his questions. "That is correct, Ensign. The first symptoms were observed two hours after the storm began. Dr. Helena Burlette was out in the forest gathering new specimens when the storm arrived. She was hit in the forehead by some debris as she made her way back to the outpost, so we did a medical scan on her as soon as she came in to make sure she hadn't suffered a concussion. She was fine, but we saw signs of heightened testosterone and a enlarged frontal bone. This puzzled us, so we kept an eye on her. She was devolved to something closer to a homo erectus or neanderthalis than a modern day human three days later. By that time we also saw early signs in six others. The medical records are included in my initial findings." She points to the datapad she gave to Nadim.

OOC:
Alrighty, trying to scavenge stuff. Reason + Conn = TN 14. Using a determination to buy a 1 for 2 successes and a momentum for an extra d20. She's applying her value of To Fly the Ship, Know the Ship. So if she succeeds, she would end up gaining an extra momentum.
OOC:
Post Roll
OK, so, Phenna has a Conn focus of Shuttlecraft. Since this is for parts for their shuttle, the d20 rolls ended up with all three at or below the focus for the task, which would make each 2 successes.
Determination = 2 Successes
Roll = 6 Successes
Total = 8 Successes

With a difficulty of 4, that gives me 4 Momentum, +1 from my value for a gain of +5 Momentum?
If the focus doesn't work, it would be a total of 5 successes, which gives a +1 Momentum or +2 with the value.

CD = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
So 5 points there (1, 2, and 2 effects for 1+1+1+2).

Which means we have 1 breakthrough on the whole thing?

Rolls

Reason+Conn= TN 14, 6 [CD]. +1d20 Momentum - (3d6)

(343) = 10

Challenge Dice - (6d6)

(135624) = 21

Dec 28, 2016 8:21 pm
OOC:
Correct. You have +5 momentum, 1/2 breakthrough and 5/8 progress in the scavanging challenge. 3 more progress is required to finish the Obstacle. Well done using the Values, think we may have forgotten them so far.
Phenna takes a quick overview of the supplies in and around the compound and finds almost everything you need to fix the shuttle. You only need a new off axis field controller for the port nacelle and you are ready to go.
OOC:
Edit: As you've probably noticed, there is nothing stopping you from splitting the party and pursuing multiple tasks at the same time

"We will need to gather specimens. If there's a cure of this disease, or even something palliative to reduce its impact on those who have it, it's worth ensuring this gets back to Starfleet and the Federation. It can impact hundreds of thousands of lives rather than just the dozen or so we have here." Nadim notes, as he takes the datapad from Dr. Shipp.

He begins to paw through the pad and notes, "If the storm is damaging the local flora and fauna, those specimens will be more important than ever -- we could lose the chance to uncover the clues or details to this cure entirely. Surely that's worth the distraction?"
Dec 29, 2016 4:15 am
"Mr. Patil, perhaps you and I should look for the plants while Mr. Sevek focuses on understanding and stopping the de-evolution. We have to save these people as well as the plants. The suggestion that de-evolution stops if we get off planet with good samples is just supposition at this point. Besides, you don't want to know what Andorians evolved from..."

"If you can find them, I'll collect them...and I'll keep an eye out for attackers."

As an aside to Martinez, "I'm concerned that Dr. Jasper and Dr. Shipp will become dangerous while we are away. Do you think you could convince them to quarantine themselves? I know it's a difficult conversation, but I think you have the skills to make it happen."

Nadim nods, "This seems like a good plan. And if we've recovered the specimens before Sevek is complete, I can lend a hand with some of the lower level data analysis to let him focus on the more complicated elements of the research."
Dec 29, 2016 4:04 pm
If I could have a minor hand to get the last little bits of parts and machinery to get the ship running, we can be sure to get off the planet with all of the specimens you seek to gather. If we don't get her repaired, your gathering will be for naught. Phenna says, arms brimming with scavenged parts.
Dec 29, 2016 4:08 pm
"I'm quite sure I can't tell a frobulator from a whingatron, Ensign." Nadim says lightly. "So alas, my lack of help here is likely actually helpful to you rather than harmful..."

The statement rang true with Francisco, better safe then sorry. He just hoped that the doctor would see it that way.

Convincing Dr. Shipp that she and Dr. Jasper needs to be constrained is a Difficulty 1 Task. - It's reasonable, but hard for her to accept.

OOC:
Mechanically how do I proceed with the sample stuff with Cmbrian? Just roll Empathy + Science to find something?

OOC:
You need to first locate, then collect 3 samples.
Locating a sample requires an Empathy or Reason + Science Task with a Difficulty of 2. If you succeed you may try to collect the sample.
Collecting a sample requires a Bravery or Control + Science Task with a Difficulty of 3. Once three samples have been collected, the Challenge is complete.

So, basically you have to alternate between locating and collecting samples. Any of you may do any of them, complications means bad stuff happens. No time constraints that limit the number of checks a character can make.
