Arras grabs the reins of the lead horse and pulls himself up onto the back of the raging beast. Xiara struggles to keep pace slashing at the flashing feet of the animals.

In front of the horses, Sister Rose sets a cart full of hay alight. It practically explodes, overwhelming Sister Rose and the bystander. This causes the horses to pull in different directions.
OOC:
Sister Rose takes that 1d4 damage from the flames, as does the woman standing nearby. Arras roll a Str Defy Danger. Xiara, I think an Aid action would be appropriate here.

What are they doing ?!

Marrick goes once again to the panicked crowd, his muscles tense and his expression both angry and scared.
He will run towards the victims and raise his shield where the horses are likely to hit, while with his other elbow he will push the fleeing pedestrians out of the way.

What are THEY doing ?! he screams as he sees Arras riding the mad carriage, Xiara slicing at the horses and Sister Rose blowing up hay.
OOC:
3 Hold.

Arras is able to pull himself onto the lead horse. The flames from the burning cart are intense. He readies his spear from the holster on his back and takes aim at the horse to his left. Damn these infernal horses! Such a tragic waste, but what must be done must be done.

Arras plunges the spear into the horse beside him. The long tip bites deep and the horse cries out-an unnatural, deafening wail. Blood sprays Arras' leggings and sullies his fine cloak.
OOC:
Let me know if I need to DD to stay on the horse. My plan is to kill as many as I can until they stop.

Arras's slays one of the lead horses. The dead weight starts to drag the horses toward the alley. With Xiara attacking from the side, and the flames exploding in front of them, the beasts lurch and turn down the side road. The wreck sounds like the god of thunder has come to walk among you. Arras is thrown, landing hard in a pile of refuse, but mostly unscathed.

Sister Rose takes the woman she accidentally injured aside. She is screaming and crying in pain, and muttering something unintelligible under her breath.

Marrick is pushing the crowd back, keeping them clear of the flames. The danger should be over, but something isn't quite right. The carriage is tipped on it's side, the horses that still live are screaming from their injuries, thrashing about trying to run still even though they are broken. Something in the carriage is moving. It's dark in the alley. Its hard to tell what it is...except...a carriage is supposed to carry people...there was no driver, but were there passengers?

The heavy wooden side of the vehicle explodes outward. A hulking black form suddenly erupts from within the broken wooden box, leaping to the ground next to the wreckage. It's skin is black as coal, and seems rocky and hard, like some kind of rough chitin armor. A foul black ichor flows from between the plates. Another form emerges, climbing out more slowly, but as the wood cracks loudly in it's clawed hands, you can see it is no less powerful.

When the second creature rises to it's full height, you can see that it is female. Clinging to it are spoiled, blood soaked silk remnants that may once have been a noble woman's dress. The other you can tell is male, from its wide stance and dangling bits. Their eyes are all too human as they stare out at you, glowing red in the darkness.

Xiara vanishes into a nearby doorway. The monsters don't seem to pay her any attention.

Sister Rose reaches out with her divine senses. Her goddess is ready to respond.

Peering from the wet gutters, Arras witnesses the otherworldly forms as they emerge from the exploded carriage. Some dark magic here. Lets see if they can see through their own darkness
Arras calls upon the ancients. He sees the flickering shadows of the carriage alight in the night air. The dampness of the cobblestone streets now slick and silent. These shadows can be walked upon, tread upon as any surface-if the ancients allow it-silent and unseen. With a near silent whisper Arras invokes the magic of his homeland and charges-his feet silent and his form hidden by the flickering shadows of the burning carriage- toward the inhuman forms standing in the wake of the explosion. His spear ready he lunges...

Sister Rose looks upon the creatures that emerged from the wreckage. Their auras shine with a dark light, they are wholly evil. Glancing down at the woman she inadvertently injured, she sees a horrible sight. The woman's soul is wounded and is now being consumed from the inside out. Some dark seed of evil is sprouting within her.

Arras sends his magic coiling out in the form of shadows, but the nature of the creatures he is facing corrupt the magic immediately. The shadows swirl around the creatures and lash out at Arras as inky black tendrils, tearing into the elf's flesh.

Time seems to slow as Marrick steps away from the panicked crowd, cowering on the side of the street, and slimy dark shadowmen crawl out of the cart.
He has never seen anything like this, but Arras and Sister Rose seem eager to deal with them. The warrior doesn't like the bright red embers in place of their eyes, and these people even seem to have been human once.

He reaches for his ball and chain, raising his shield as well and moves towards the fight.
He was wondering how the others could act immediately upon seeing such horror, but as he tenses his arm and wrist to lash out at the male figure his gaze is focused and he is calm.
OOC:
Marrick is using the Reach tag of his weapon to stay somewhat away and judge their resistance to blows.

marithyme says:
Would Cure Wounds have any effect on the soul?
OOC:
You could try...it is a wound...but you also have the Divine Guidance move. You could make an offering to your goddess if you didn't want to risk losing the spell. The option is completely yours. If the offering is significant enough she might intercede.
Marrick lashes out with his weapon and it connects solidly, the crunch of chitin armor is loud and satisfying, but the creature still stands. His hand grips the head of Marrick's weapon and pulls the foes closer together. The creature's other clawed hand slashes at the fighter, finding purchase despite his armor.
OOC:
This monster does 1 piercing, meaning that you subtract 1 from your armor before taking damage. Don't forget to subtract armor from damage you take.

Also...if you have failed a roll...that is 6 or less...be sure to mark an XP for each roll. I have been forgetting to point this out. If I find the time I will go back and tally for you, but I'm busy today so no promises.

Arras is flung into the streets like a bag of rotten onions. The wound in his midsection is severe but luckily he still retains his spear. Holding his bloody gash, dripping his life-fluid on the wet cobblestone streets, Arras backs away toward the entrance to the palace.
Quote:
Fall back! This evil is more than we can conquer!
Quote:
Guards! Guards! At your stations!
Arras calls behind him, steeling himself against the bleeding fleshwound and retreating to the palace doors....

Sister Rose whispers a quick prayer to her goddess, "Spare this woman the evil that blooms within her would, and I will give a life...one of those monsters or my own, given in battle against them." She stands and faces the monsters squarely, determined not to let them pass.
