Chapter 1.1: Willowdark (Kaio, Geran, Rixon)

Jan 9, 2017 10:06 pm
Your adventures shall live here!
Jan 10, 2017 2:08 am
Kaio takes the cloak Frederick offers him and steps out of the house with one final thanks. He tucks his sword back into the flaps of the cloak, pulls his own ornate hood off his face and hides it, pulling the new hood up over his head. "Shall we head for the barracks, friends?" he says, turning North.
Jan 10, 2017 2:20 am
Frederick nods slightly at him as he takes the cloak and waves a bit.
Jan 10, 2017 2:45 am
As Rixon makes to leave he turns to Genevieve and Frederick, So nice to reconnect. I hope it's not so long, next time. and then he turns and follows Kaio out into the night.

To his two companions, Rixon says, Yes, let's.

He pulls up the hood of his own grey cloak and gauges the early evening activity of the town as he begins to walk north.
OOC:
What is the town like at night? Is it well lit? Are there taverns active? If it is out-of-place for people to be walking around, Rixon will suggest sneaking.

Also just a reminder that Rixon (and allies immediately with him) can move twice as fast in urban environments due to his background.
Jan 10, 2017 2:50 am
The evening is not busy (after all, there are only a few hundred people in town). There is a tavern open in the market place (southeast corner). They have some tables laid out in the square with the fountains and a single placard hangs over the door. On the sign is a picture of a rock with worn flecks of gold leaf on the top. Fine scrollwork letters under it read "The Gilt Rock".

There is the soft sound of a lute drifting through the open door as you come upon it.
Jan 10, 2017 2:50 am
Kaio moves up, coming to the market. "We should make an attempt to avoid contact with others here, I think."
Jan 10, 2017 6:34 am
Rixon nods in agreement as he whispers, "Much easier. You said you were sneaky? Let's go around."

Keeping to the long shadows outside the marketplace, he moves forward, trying to stay out of sight. Let's hope they're all as drunk as they sound...

Geran agrees as well No, obviously we want to sneak through a well-lit crowd of guards and drunken folk where we could definitely stay hidden.... Yes let's go around! Come on. he gestures for them to continue moving.
Jan 10, 2017 1:53 pm
Kaio drops low so as to be below the tables and stalls and moves east around the market.
OOC:
Drama, could I get more details on who is in the market? I figured I'd throw a Stealth check in there just in case we need it specifically sometime.

Jan 10, 2017 2:12 pm
The marketplace center (where the fountains are) is empty, save for the one corner where the tavern has a few tables outside. There are only a handful of people out there: two gnomes you've not seen before, a dwarf, and three humans. They are all clustered around two tables they've pulled together and seem to be sharing a small cask of ale. They are seemingly in good spirits, with a bit of laughing and back slapping. They have a heavy candle in the middle of their table casting a small circle of light some 5' around where they sit. Other than that, the marketplace area is quiet - and dark. The few buildings that are there are all shuttered and their awnings are rolled up.

No one else is making their way toward the tavern at this point, likely those that are coming out for the night are already out.
Jan 10, 2017 3:11 pm
Kaio, noting that the candle will ruin the darkvision of all those sitting at the table, moves towards them. His movements are fluid and sporadic, and he seems to follow the shadows the clouds cast in the darkness. When he is just beyond the light of the candle, he stops and listens to the conversation of the drinkers.
OOC:
I'm assuming I can use my previous roll - is that OK?
Jan 10, 2017 3:35 pm
OOC:
Works for me. :)
Oy I thank ya Tiller. 've not had - 'ad - a - a DRINK since my boy - not sinc - hic - not since that vile Harrald did 'im. One of the gnomes says, a hitch in his voice. You note this is specifically incongruous with the laughter that was happening earlier. The dwarf nods his head and raises his mug. To Harrald gettin' his some dark night!

Would ya keep yer mouth shut Tiller? You know the Guard comes here off duty, ya knob. How do you think those looeys of Notter's figger their targets? Eh? Flappin' gums and liquored words gettin' back to those cretins. To the health of Telluria. That's what we drink! one of the scraggly humans says, cuffing the dwarf on the head.
Jan 10, 2017 3:56 pm
Looking closer at the gnomes he estimates they must be the Bluebottles, whose son was killed recently. He fixes their faces in his mind should he need the information at a later time. Tiller, the dwarf, is obviously an ardent believer in their cause - Kaio notes him as a possible recruit. Had I a drink I would drink to the same, friend, Kaio thinks in response to the human's proclamation. He keeps listening, hoping to gain more helpful information. However, he begins to be more watchful, not wanting to be surprised by a guard coming up behind him.
Jan 10, 2017 4:20 pm
Their conversation doesn't yield any other useful information. They seem to almost be looping around and around the same topic. "I haven't drank since my son died.", "Kill Harrald.", "Shut up Tiller." Then they toast Telluria. They are deep enough in their cups that they seem to fixate.

About their third cycle through, you hear the sound of clinking chain armor and plated boots outside the courtyard, to the north.
Jan 10, 2017 4:34 pm
Kaio glances around for anything that he could use for cover. Moving silently and keeping his cloak around him, he makes his way into the market place, flattening himself against one of the kiosks a few yards the tavern where the drinkers are sitting. He is fairly sure the guards are coming that way and he wants to be out of the way when they come, but he wants to be close enough to intervene should the necessity arise. Kaio flexes his hands, loosening his blade in its sheath in preparation.
OOC:
Not sure if I need another Stealth, but I'm adding another anyhow.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+6)

(17) + 6 = 23

Jan 10, 2017 5:43 pm
OOC:
I'll take that roll for you to be hiding in shadows.
As Kaio presses himself into the shadows to the north of the tavern, his back against the structure. Hiding in the alley, he watches as a pair of village guards saunter into the cobbled marketplace. Heavy plated boots fall with clanks on the cobbles as their chain clinks with each step. Longswords are belted at their hips and crossbows strapped across their backs.

Pyter! Looks like old Bluebottle is still pining the loss of his sneakthief son. Davven, your lout of a kid was caught with a fistful of gold that wasn't rightly his and ye know it. Let off, he deserved to swing as much as the next thief will! one of the guards says, slightly louder than necessary.

Davven, the teary gnome, looks up from his drink, hatred and rage boiling across his face. MY BOY WASN'T A THIEF AND YOU KNOW IT EDDAN! HE - HE DIDDN - DIDN'T DESERVE HAVIN' HIS FINGERS CHOPPED OFF NEITHER! WHAT DO YA THINK MY LIFE HAS BEEN LIKE WITH WYLLA SINCE?! He cries as he launches himself across the table, his mug trailing behind him in his hand.

One of the scraggly humans, not the one that stopped the dwarf earlier tries to stop the gnome from getting past him but fails. As Davven runs towards the guards, Eddan's hand is already streaking out with his longsword, clearly expecting the reaction. The blade bites into the gnome's side, dropping him to his knees.

YOU ALL SAW HIM HE ASSAULTED ME! A GUARD ON HIS ROUNDS! Eddan roars as he jams the sword down into Davven's back, causing his legs to twitch once, twice, and then no more. A cry of pain escapes the gnome as he lies on the ground bleeding.
Jan 10, 2017 6:18 pm
Rixon had watched with a questioning look as Kaio faded into the shadows, seeming to go towards the tavern rather than around. He offers Geran a doubtful shake of his head, Well, he did want to be alone...

Having lost track of the man, Rixon motions Geran to join him and sticks to the shadows at the edge of the market. He ignores the merrymakers at the tavern, thinking Likely just drinking to soothe the thought of the suffering Notter will bring with him...

But Rixon’s thoughts and movement are interrupted by the flurry of shouting and sword. He looks from the injured (soon dead, from the looks of it) Bluebottle on the cobblestones to the guard, who’s body language seems to Rixon to say ‘Just try something’. If only he could get to that gnome, perhaps he could use what limited healing he knew. To Geran, he whispers, You got any magic tricks to draw these Light-forsaken lackeys out of the market? We can’t risk the whole town by raising the alarm, but they need to leave. Now.

You get advantage, but because you are hidden. Surprise is the mechanic where, after initiative rolls, DM decides who is 'surprised' by whom. The people doing the surprising then get to take an action before the init order kicks in.
A faint whistle whips out of the darkness, and those of you looking at the marketplace courtyard area see Eddan slap his neck as Kaio's dart stings his neck.

Dramasailor sent a note to Dramasailor
COMBAT! No surprise round, they are now on alert. They don't know where you are at this point, so you are all still hidden. PCs won the initiative, so you may act now.
Jan 10, 2017 6:58 pm
OOC:
How much, exactly, did it sting his neck?
EDIT: Kaio would hold his action until the guards make a move. Since Rixon indicated that the guards could see them, I'm guessing the guards will implicate them in the crime and go after them. If that happens, Kaio will go behind them and try to hit them while they are distracted. For that, I am adding a Stealth roll.
Kaio now has a dilemma. Does he act, or not? If so, these guards must be neutralized... and with Notter coming to town, two guards gone missing could be bad news indeed. Unless...
Darting out of the shadows, Kaio rolls to the guards' very feet, drawing his sword as he does and slashing at Eddan's gut. As he does so, he brings his pommel up and attempts to connect with Pyter's jaw.
OOC:
Wait - since I was hidden, do I get advantage to melee attacks if I come out of hiding? I'm going to go with 'no', but if I do lemme know and I reroll where necessary.

Rixon feels relief and dread in quick succession at Kaio's rapid assault. Without deliberation, he steps from his own hiding place. With both rapiers drawn, he says, Yes, Eddan. We saw. and unceremoniously drives the blades towards the man's side.

The guards cannot see any of you three. All of you are hidden or otherwise obscured. From where you are, all you can tell is that it definitely drew blood. How badly though, you cannot say. He didn't drop his blade and fall like a toddler having a tantrum in a store. And I would say you'd get advantage on this first round since you'd be moving and attacking in one close in block. The same would go for the rest of you. This is in part because of your stealth roll as you came out of the shadows. Go ahead and give me a pair of extra rolls.

As Kaio rolls out, his blade slashes up at Eddan's gut, slicing him from groin to sternum. The man's innards spill out, and he looks down in shock. My - my chain - who...... he mutters slowly as the light fades from his eyes. Even as he collapses, Kaio's arms move and his elbow connects with Pyter's jaw, cracking his teeth together.
Jan 10, 2017 7:23 pm
As Rixon rushes forward, he makes his attack. Seeing his initial target fall, he redirects to Pyter. Unfortunately, the surprise of Kaio's attack causes him to whirl in a circle, making Rixon's blows narrowly miss their mark.

Been busy with school, sorry for the delay. I assume I get advantage as well?
The warlock carefully studied the guards voice, taking note on a future impersonation if a situation calls for it. That gnome better...nevermind he sighs as he sees the gnome fall to the ground. I'm not just an illusionist he says to Rixon, and immediately his necklace faintly glows, and blue energy beams in Gerans hands. He watches the first guard die, and aims instead for the other, firing a beam of crackling energy at the enemy.

The streak of eldritch energies streak out from Geran's fingers. It sails across the courtyard just as Pyter turns to face the sound Rixon made. Doing so squares his face to the blast and the force energy drills into him, shattering his jaw and bursting one eye. He is knocked over, falling with a thud, his chest still.

Combat Over.

What in the hells was that! Ye killed the Watch! Oh lord, you all killed friends of Notter! Run! Run now. We didn't see you lot, and if you know what's good for you, you didn't see us either. Go before they get wind inside! says Tiller the Dwarf, waving at the lot of you. You hear the music has gone quiet in the tavern.
Jan 10, 2017 9:51 pm
Rixon turns to the Bluebottle on the ground, completely disregarding the fallen guardsmen and warnings of the Dwarf, Even drunk, you must’ve known how that would end, Rixon kneels and places his hands on the gnome’s shattered body, feeling for his breath, looking for a way to preserve his life. Come on, man, Rixon mutters, as the healing Light courses from his palms into the gnome.

If he’s still alive, Rixon will use 1 HP of Lay on Hands to stabilize him and hopefully bring him back around
Jan 10, 2017 9:59 pm
A faint golden shimmer of light pulses under Rixon's hands. Davven's eyelids flutter slightly and his breathing normalizes slightly. You can see the stab wound in his back knit itself closed. Unfortunately, as you bump his legs, there is no reaction.

What - wher - where am I? What happened? Everything was warm, and my boy, he was there waiting to hug me again! WHY WOULD YOU TAKE THAT FROM ME! Davven starts to yell and attempts to roll over. As he does, he seems to notice his legs not functioning any longer. A howl pierces the night as he pounds his fists, out of agony and anger.
Jan 10, 2017 10:11 pm
And he'll be waiting still. But now you have another chance to send those that wrongfully executed him to their rightful deaths. I gave you another chance to do right by your boy.

And Rixon turns to the Dwarf; I suppose you're right. None of us should be here long. Can you carry your friend? I fear he can no longer walk, Rixon says, solemnly.
Jan 10, 2017 10:41 pm
Kaio collects himself, cleans his blade on Eddan's clothes and sheaths it. For good measure, he pulls his dart from where it had lodged itself in Eddan's neck - he had fallen on it and driven it nearly through - and cleans it as well.
"We need to deal with these," Kaio says. "But don't worry, I have a plan." He picks Eddan up, feeding his intestines back into his body methodically before doing so. "Rixon, can you grab the other? And would you follow me? Gerna, could you clean up any blood- " he pulls Eddan's cloth belt from his body and drops it on the ground, "with this? Then bring it along." he begins walking quickly straight east, away from the town.

Geran replies immediately with a tone of annoyance My name is Geran, not Gerna... he then turns to Davven It's true, your son has all of eternity to wait for you, but right now we need you more. You want revenge? You want to see Telluria return to health? Then join us! Both of you. You just saw our potential in action, and that was without real effort. he kneels down to the gnome and offers a smile. Can't you see that this is what your son would have truly wanted? Your legs aren't working, but you still have heart my friend. I'm sure there's a job for you sir. he looks at the dwarf, You too, both of you, join the cause, and defeat the problem rather than lingering and letting it grow. I promise you a better Telluria, and when my fa... he catches himself, when this war ends, and when Wessex is gone, then King Anvilard will be the ruler we need. He stretches his hand out to the gnome, What say you friend?

As Kaio begins cleaning the grisly scene, Rixon lifts the Gnome and seats him back at the table with the dwarf, Really. Go. Take your families, bring food, only return once Notter has left. It won't be safe here.

He returns to where the guards fell and lifts the remains of Pyter as Kaio had asked. There was little time for deliberation, now. Hopefully the market would remain empty for a little longer. As they walk under the burden of the guardsmen's lifeless bodies, Rixon says, Care to share this plan, then? I have a guess but I'd rather hear it from you.
Jan 10, 2017 11:29 pm
Davven looks up from the table for a moment, his eyes still full of hurt and rage. You know nothing of my son! He cared nothing for Anvilard, that daft fool! Not that he liked Wessex any better, fiend that he is. He was to study botany in Markinland next spring. Harrald ruined all of that, and now you tell me to be STRONG?! I can't move my Dark-claimed legs. He succumbs to a fit of tears and chest wracking sobs.

Lads, leave now. Your friend has the right of it, if you don't get those bodies gone befo.... Tiller begins.

STAND TO YOU LOUTS! STOP! a voice from the tavern cries out.

You see a strapping man standing full in the doorway, his heavy black beard full, and his eyes cold.

As the man in the tavern makes his order, Kaio puts down Eddan, ready for more conflict. "And to who do we stand, may I ask?" he says, the calmness of his voice barely covering the coldness of exasperation. "Unless you have a passing good reason, we had best be on our way."

Updated. Didn't realize I miskeyed it, apologies!

As for your post Tookie, I was just going to have it happen kind of concurrently. He's not that far from the table, so it's not a hugely destabilizing thing.

For Geran, it's not so much that it's a high DC, it was an impossibility at the moment. He's completely plastered, only a few weeks out from having watched his son get hauled out in front of everyone and hung and THEN the kid's fingers were cut off and nailed to their door. In six or eight months, sure, he may be up for something. Right now? He's so far into his misery that it's amazing he can even manage to get dressed. Then, he effectively dies and is literally watching his son try to embrace him from across their version of Elysian Fields/Heaven/The Other Side and right as he's about to be reunited with the ONE thing that he misses, a well meaning burst of healing energies rip his son away from him and bring him back to consciousness where he cannot move his legs and he's still without his son. You then tell him that his son will literally be waiting an ETERNITY for him. He's a broken man. :(

ANYWHO, back to the exciting encounter with the scruffy man from Tavern A!
The man puffs his chest out, sweeping a cloak back to reveal a small shining badge on his belt.

You must be some of those outta-town relatives of old man D'allarae huh. Don't know the tax collector's lieutenant when ya see him, eh? That's a fine right there in its own right. But since it's yer first time, I'll see to it the charge is levied against yer cousin or whatever bollocksload he is. You can just call me Lieutenant Eldarand for the time being. Now, put yer hands up, the way I see it, you all just committed murder in the village o' Willowdark. Since no duly appointed law is here at the moment, on account of you killin' 'em, I'll have to administer justice my own self. As he speaks, a heavy crossbow swings up from under his cloak, trained on Kaio.

Rixon's rapiers each find their home in the man's back, sliding between a pair of ribs and skewering his heart from two directions. The silver tips burst forward from the lieutenant's leather armor. With a gurgle that dies unvoiced in his throat his eyes flutter closed and he slides to the ground, unconscious and dying. His chest still heaves slightly as he struggles to live.
Jan 11, 2017 3:13 am
Kaio moves to the lieutenant, sword drawn. "Pick your battles better next time, friend," he says, holding his blade to Eldarand's neck. "Where is your collection stash?" he presses the blade to the large man's throat, drawing a line of blood. "Answer now and I kill you quickly. Refuse, and I carry you into the wilderness in this state and leave you to die slowly - possibly at the hands of a scavenging animal?" he pauses a moment. "Just think how it would feel to have your flesh ripped off by a passing wolf-pack... no one would hear your screams. Is this Notter worth that to you?"

Not wanting to talk as his jaw hurts, he communicates into their minds Well that hurt... Oh! Don't fret, I can communicate telepathically. he tries to smile, but it hurts. I see he's able to be revived. Lets strip him of his items, tie him up, and interrogate him at camp A. Maybe he can be a bargaining chip... or we can actually kill him after...

Rixon jumps at the warlock's voice in his head. Quite a strange feeling. Rixon responds aloud, I don't think so. You think these people will be safe, now? We have to finish what we've started.

I want to ask him where his stash is, then we leave him with the other guards in the wilderness. It will be an easy thing to start a rumor that they went hunting and got killed by some horrible brute that is haunting the mountains.

And if someone sympathetic to Notter slipped out the back door of the tavern? Do you think this man was friendless and drinking alone?

Unable to help the man with mundane means, and still conflicted with the philosophical implications of using the Light to help one clearly so Dark, Rixon stands. He steps over the dying man, towards the crowd. He recognizes some faces from their short time in town, but many he didn't. He could only empathize with them.

You're all probably scared of what's to come in the next day or two. I am too. You may have wanted this, dreamed of it. Or, maybe you were comfortable under the thumb of these monsters, safe with their selfish rule of 'Law'. But know, this was coming. Unfortunately, it happens today. This is a call to action. It will be dangerous, but given, Rixon gestures to the guardsmen and Eldarand, It may be the only option. This is your home, not mine. For taking the first step, I apologize. But I will help you defend it from men such as these.

As Rixon launches into his speech, the other Watch member and the Sheriff step through the crowd, looking sternly at the three of you.

You'll remain there until the magistrate can see you to adjudge your case. You've killed two members of the Watch in the commission of their duties and slain an appointed lieutenant of the Baron's Tax Collector. We are a fair lot and you will see your trial, if you capitulate. the older man says.

As Kaio looks the sheriff over (and indeed as all of you do with even passive perception) you notice several key things. While he appears gray-haired at the temples, his stance is that of a well trained, and very fit, combatant. He wears both the cloak and badge of his office, but under it is a set of studded leather armor. You see the edge of a shield peeking over the edge of his shoulder. His stance is balanced and his eyes sharp. A long scar runs from one temple down to the point of his chin, clearly decades old. You all have the feeling that he is far tougher than any that you've fought before. As you look at the crowd, they all clearly look to him, rather than you, for a clue as to action. As Kaio inspects him, you see the Sheriff's eyes set in determination.

The Sheriff considers your words carefully as you speak. As he does so, he looks down at your blades in his hands and at the wound on the side of your face. As he starts to open his mouth to respond to you, two of the humans from the table in the marketplace start tripping over their tongues.

Sir, that one there, he was shooting some magic! And then he said some stuff and made that Lieutenant burst into fire!
yeah, Lurgh has the right of it! He was in the alley then out comes this wisp of something that knocked poor Pyter over, and shattered his face!

At their drunken words, he takes another look over everything in the scene. Noticing that Eldarand is indeed missing part of his beard where the hellish rebuke singed the hair off, he turns back to you.

Innocent or guilty isn't for me to decide right now. You'll be coming with us, if you're truly innocent, the Magistrate will be able to figure that part out.

Kaio sheaths his sword. Raising his head to the sky, he yells as loud as he can to the mountains in a fluid tongue. Then he says stiffly to the sheriff, "I will come with you without a fight, on one condition. That it is you who presides over our trial, not Notter."

Collector Strugh has no authority to convene a trial, nor adjudicate one, related to a crime of this nature. Bilking money, money forgery, or tax dodging, to be sure he'd be the one to levy charges and adjudicate you. The Magistrate will preside, as they do for all capital accusations without clear witness. I don't promise that Notter won't hold a substantial grudge against you all for your actions here, depending on the Magistrate's arguments. The Sheriff says as he pulls a whistle from under his cloak. Putting it to his lips, he pipes a sharp tune that carries over the wind. Within minutes, 3 more guards come running into the marketplace, unarmored and sliding their swordbelts on as they skidded to a halt in front of the now dispersing crowd.

Reporting as ordered, sir! they each bellow, some slightly out of breath.

Yes, we need to manacle these three and put them in the hold tonight. Let Cyrian go, he can sleep off his drink elsewhere tonight. We'll want all three cells for these louts. Oh, and make sure that one gets the mitts? He says, pointing at Geran.

At this point, if you don't resist, the three guards will shackle your wrists and lead you, accompanied by the Sheriff, to the jail. If that's the case, we'll pick up the story there. Otherwise, we'll continue playing out here. :)

@Couch - That carries just fine through the night air. Not sure how much she'll hear of it, but no special rolls needed.

Their intoxication is part of why the Magistrate will be contacted. As for medical attention, you look like you'll be fine, provided you don't get into any more trouble. I'm sure a night of rest will see you right as the rain. The Sheriff says with a chuckle as he leads you all to the jail. The walk only takes a few minutes.

When you get to the jail, the Sheriff himself processes you. Geran, your hands are bound in a special set of manacles that restrict your finger motions. As the guards hold each of you, the Sheriff pats you all down, searching for weapons. Any packs you have are taken, and their contents noted down on a ledger slip. When his fingers brush your newly acquired badge, it lingers slightly longer than on other items and the otherwise procedural man fails to note its presence in the ledger.

Jan 12, 2017 2:58 am
For the moment, you are just in your cells. The interior of the jail is simple. As you walk into the building, there is a front office, with a wall and door to the back of it. A total space of maybe 10 feet deep and the full width of the jail across. There is a desk clerk on duty. The Sheriff took a ledger book from the wall and had the guard lead all three of you through the door in the wall. What lay beyond were three cells on the right side, clearly large enough for 4 or 5 people per, if need be. They are currently empty. You see storage lockers along the side opposite the cells. You are chained to the cell while they pat you down and your belongings are secured in the lockers with keys from the Sheriff's hip. As he walks out, you notice three silver bits slipping into his pocket.

You've now been in your cells alone for about 5 minutes now. There are no exits from this room, save the door you all came through. The walls are heavy stone with no obvious mortar joints. The bars of your cells are very heavy and set into the stone floors.

I'll never understand why they didn't jump at the opportunity for freedom. They just... rolled over. Gave in. Maybe that's all they know. Maybe it's easier, or more comfortable. Yeah and maybe I'll get a new rope to hang from. Just like...

Rixon's thoughts wander freely in the quiet of captivity. But, maybe not. The sheriff did take an interest in those Haremite emblems. Perhaps he's an ally, and he'll spring us in the dead of night. Or, maybe he'll use them against us and the Harem in ten different ways. More maybes. Sweet Light, do I hate waiting.

As his mind wanders, so do his eyes. Rixon examines the locks, the walls, the bars and other fixtures... he looks for any advantage within the sparse cell. He takes his time, going over each detail thoroughly.
OOC:
Can we see each other or are we all in a row facing the same direction? If Rixon can see what Kaio is doing, he'll immediately understand what he's trying to do and ask if Kaio will toss him one of those, as Rixon is good at that too.

The cells are stone walls on the sides and bars facing the middle of the room, so you can't see one another, though you could hear one another.

You end up only getting to futz with your manacles for about 20 minutes. The door to the room slams open and you hear heavy bootsteps on the flagstone floors. Geran, it snaps you out of your sleep unless you make an effort to ignore the noise.

As you look out of the bars, you see the Sheriff storming in, Genevieve in tow.

What in the Light-abandoned depths were you three thinking!? she says forcefully under her breath. You know that Notter is coming through, and expects his people here, yet you set off on speeches and slaughter two of the watch AND one of the lieutenants? Don't get me wrong, we're better off without Eldarand, but now we have to find a way to cover his absence when Notter shows up! At this point, the Sheriff has moved over to the lockers and unlocked them. When he walks back over to you, he speaks, calmly.

Look, I know you three were responsible for the deaths. There were sober eyes in the tavern that saw the situation occur. Plus, you were a bit loud when you were yelling about him paying for it when you lit him on fire. he says, looking pointedly at Geran, At least ten people, most of them not blindingly drunk, have already corroborated that. For Light's sake, that part of why I came out of the bar in the first place! He shakes his head. And you do it wearing the badge of the Bow. I know Bethene, perhaps better than any of you lot could understand. You need to learn to keep a low profile. Trying to whip the town into a fervor? Without knowing thing one about the ones you're addressing? I've sent my duty clerk home for the night, said I would stand the watch given how dangerous you three were suspected of being. I can't let you three free, you are suspected of killing lawmen. I put your badges with your things. No one knows, save me, that they existed at all. I must say though, all of this activity tonight, and with my Watch members mourning the loss of two of their own, it'll be a tough thing, keeping all of my attention in one place. He says as he walks back out to the front, again with a physically distraught looking Genevieve in tow.
Jan 12, 2017 3:08 pm
Geran listens to the rant, and replies in both Genevieves head and the sheriffs,We had to save that gnome. One of your watch nearly killed him, so what did we do? We saved him. That's my job is to help those who cannot defend themselves. Yes I killed your guard and that lieutenant, and I don't regret it. I do have an idea to help with Eldarands disapearance he opens his eyes, and walks to the bars, speaking out loud in an unexpected voice Ay' there, I am Eldarand. he tries to imitate the lieutenants voice Die? The Sheriff turns as he gets to the end of the room.

Saving him is fine. Launching into a diatribe about rising up, standing to argue, assaulting a tax lieutenant attempting to apprehend you as is legally correct. Those are the things you don't do. Did Eldarand deserve to die? Yes. But now your actions have put this entire village at risk. The blood of the hundreds here may well be on your hands. If you find yourself free when Notter arrives, you can try to pass yourself off. If you succeed, I would be amazed. You'd probably fool the people in town with that voice, though you'd need a substantial disguise. But Harrald and Notter have known Eldarand for years. Tighter than brothers that lot. he says, with more anger in his voice that you've heard as yet.

The sheriff doesn't seem to acknowledge Kaio's response at all, he's too incensed with Geran.

Breaking the law is never the solution. Ever. You'll do well to remember that if you expect to keep your head in civilized lands. He holds the door for Genevieve.

Before she passes through it, she stalks back to Rixon's door. If you had thought about me, or my family, you would have just done what you'd planned and gotten information! You were told, TOLD, not to cross Notter. Now you've killed his lieutenant only a day or so before he arrives? What Dark bleedin' part of "don't cross Notter" don't you get?! I told you to bide time, I told you to wait until Notter came through, to give us a month to prepare. You young Haremites are all the same, rushing off with a dream and no thought and not a care for the long picture! Frederick and I will continue to help. Not for your sakes. For the Bow. Now we have to find a way to survive the Collecting. She spits at your feet, Rixon. Keep your eyes open, all of you. And your ears. Try to not draw the eye of everyone around you! With that, and not waiting to hear or reacting to any possible reply, she leaves the room and the sheriff follows, closing the door behind him. Moments later, you hear another door slam beyond and the sound of the heavy chair from the front area being drug into position.

Kaio continues working on his locks. He almost felt, at one point, if he had proper tools, he could have easily popped it, but the weird shape of the dart tips made it fall just out of reach.

So you are aware, the DC is a 25, but you are at disadvantage because you are a) still bound and b) using darts in place of actual thieves' tools. Were either of those two situations to go away, you'd be making the check as normal. If you keep working for another hour or so, you'll definitely pop it (effectively taking 20 from previous editions). IF that much time elapses without something else occurring, you'll be free of your manacles at that point and can set to work on the cell itself. I have to see what the other group's timeline is shaping up like. You guys have currently elapsed about 45 total minutes (between your initial recon of the marketplace, your two combats/mop up, walk to jail, initial jail wait, and now this. At 2 hours past your departure from Genevieve/Frederick's house, you'll free yourself from your manacles. If that happens, I'll pause you guys at that point while the other team catches up timeline wise (just so we can keep you guys running truly concurrently).

Geran sighs at his misfortune. This could've gone better. What happened to me to run amidst such misfortune? Alas, I must change my approach, for tomorrow is a new day, and with each day comes a new opportunity he repeats the thought in his head to prevent further anger, and goes back to sleep.
OOC:
Geran takes a long rest.

Kaio will continue to work on the manacles, getting a feel for the inner workings of the lock as he tries again and again to unlock it. However, he is ready to hide the darts at a moment's notice should anyone come in; he had stuffed them in the copious folds of his belt when the sheriff had come in and is prepared to do so again if necessary.
OOC:
OK, cool. Kaio will probably work on the manacles until he is sure he can get them off (so after about 2 hours of work?) then take a short rest [not a mechanical short rest, just like 20 mins of inactivity]. That done, he will assault the manacles again. If he gets them off, he will work on the cell door.

Hm, Rixon thought. I like him. He’s clearly a decent man, it’s a shame we seem to be at odds on some crucial points. By all rights, we should be allies in this.

Rixon takes Genevieve’s words to heart. He knew the abuse was well-deserved. And he had intended to get through this night without killing anyone. Hadn’t that old priest always said something about the road to hell being paved with never-meant-tos, or some such philosophical meaninglessness? I wasn’t ever really listening...

Well, this wasn’t the first time he’d been behind bars, and he didn’t expect it to be the last. Light, but I miss my toolset. Rixon lays down and tries not to think about what tomorrow will bring.
OOC:
If another inspection of the cell doesn’t turn up anything, Rixon will say his evening prayers and try to sleep.

As you all settle in and Kaio continues working on his manacles, you hear a long-winded speech rise up and fade away in the front.

Kaio, just as you pop your manacles free, you hear the front door of the jailhouse slam shut.

Please return to the main thread now that you guys are all in the same location. Locking this one.
